Most tours to Germany include Hamburg, Munich, and perhaps the Black Forest or a trip along the Rhine. We’re sure that there are even more grounds to stop by, visit now and discover your own. when it comes to planning your German tourist destinations, however, this eclectic, industrial city needs to be added to everyone’s German bucket list
1. HafenCity
Encompassing the Speicherstadt, HafenCity is a brand new waterside area that turned into made professional in 2008.
Think smooth workplace blocks, rental complexes, and enjoyment amenities, all designed with actual panache and sensitivity for his or her waterfront location.
So a long way from the principal sight to peer is the Elbphilharmonie live performance hall, which merits its entry.
2. Port of Hamburg tour
Don't expect to see nature on these boat tours; instead, learn about what makes Germany's largest port tick.
The Port of Hamburg is a bustling sea superhighway with 9,000 ship calls per year
nearly 300 berths, and 27 miles of the wharf for seagoing vessels or Book Flight ticket on Tap air Portugal.
A barge tour, such as the Maritime Circle line, will bring you closer to the container ship action. Put another way, you could escape the confines of land with a floating techno party on the Love Boat. If speed is your thing, try RIB Piraten, the only speedboat operator permitted inside Hamburg book online flight on Book Tap Portugal.
On the final stretch of this tour, you'll reach top speeds on a rigid inflatable boat that skims the waves at 60 miles per hour.
3. St. Michael’s Church
St. Michael's Church is among the greatest things to do in Hamburg. The church was constructed in the Baroque style in the 1750s. It provides a stunning view over the city that is truly a feast for the eyes. In conclusion, you will undoubtedly have a nice day when visiting this church.
The best attractions in Hamburg
Strandperle
Just because you live in the city does not preclude you from visiting the beach. Strandperle is a fixture along Hamburg's sandy stretch of the Elbe river, which is popular with sunbathers and swimmers during the summer. Strandperle is a favorite hangout for locals and tourists alike, with a large deck of tables, chairs, and umbrellas, a bar, a kitchen, and the harbor in the background.
Open all day Friday through Sunday, you can stop in for a beer and a burger, catch up with cocktails and friends, or rent out the 'upper deck' for an intimate dinner party and fly with Tap air Portugal.
Jenischpark
Jenischpark has an English country feel to it, with its rolling green acres, woodland paths, and stately Jenisch House. The oldest landscaped park in Hamburg, it's a popular spot for summer picnics, but it's also a lovely place to visit all year, especially at dusk or dawn, when the sturdy oak trees become silhouettes against the setting sun.
Jenisch House, formerly the country residence of a wealthy Hamburg merchant, is now a museum specializing in Northern German art and culture, particularly of the nineteenth century, with a ground floor of original Empire and Biedermeier furnishings.
For those who prefer the twentieth century, the low-rise Ernst Barlach Museum down the slope is a tranquil modernist enclave showcasing the work of sculptor Ernst Barlach.
Schanzenviertel
Schanzenviertel, the traditional beating heart of Hamburg counter-culture and site of the much-publicized violent protests during the G20 summit, clings tenaciously to its alternative credentials. In reality, despite the smashed-up stores of summer 2017, the neighborhood is defined by third-wave coffee shops and vintage lamp stores rather than anarchic dissent hubs check tap airlines .
High-consuming hipsters and media professionals have long moved into the "Schanze," pricing out the anarchists and students who gave the district its interest and edge. Only the run-down Rote Flora, a former neighborhood theatre (now a long-contested squat and cultural space), remains a true center of activism and protest.
Nonetheless, Schanzenviertel remains a lively and charismatic district, with a thriving bar scene and several restaurants.
Fischmarkt
Depending on how late you slept the night before or whether you went to bed at all, a visit to the Sunday Fischmarkt is a legendary Hamburg experience. Since 1703, it's been doing brisk, fishy business, with raucous criers promising all the bargains and bawdy banter you could want.
Of course, there's plenty of fish—smoked, fresh, pickled—as well as flowers, fruit, vegetables, secondhand food, and even livestock. The adjacent Fischauktionshalle promises to keep the party going with beer and live rock bands for the tired Reeperbahn reveler and get your flight on Tap Portugal.
There are numerous cafés nearby for those seeking a more restorative breakfast. The Fischmarkt opens at 5 a.m. in the summer, 7 a.m. in the winter, and closes at 9:30 a.m. all year.
7 Hamburg Nightlife Experiences
1. Grosse Freiheit 36
The most well-known location for enjoying Hamburg's best nightlife is here. You will only hear about Grosse Freiheit 36 if you walk about asking people where they think is the best location to have a fantastic night in Hamburg. It is a live music venue that receives a number of visitors each night and is situated on the city's busiest boulevard, Reeperbahn. The Beatles also played here and check Flight to Hamburg!
2. Rote Flora
Various artistic inventories are housed in this theatre. So, if you're someone who wants to see some major and significant things happen late at night, this is the spot for you. Squatters have lived there for a very long time. Bring your crew of creatives here to enjoy the nightlife, meet new people, make art, and have a fun evening!
3. Herzblut
Make a good night's start! This is the ideal fusion of an opulent restaurant, bar, and club. Jordan Mozer's perfect interior design will astound you, but the outstanding dinner will quench your desire for foreign cuisine. You can head to the dance floor for some extra fun when you've finished the dishes and the specialty cocktail. The finest place to go for nightlife in Hamburg with a significant other or family is here.
4. Docks
Do you want to know why Metallica referred to this as the best freaking club in the entire world? Well, Docks used to be a very well-liked movie theatre. Later, it evolved into a club with seating for around 1500 music fans. The DJ here has seen live performances by David Bowie and more and plays all of your favorite music.
The fact that Docks is the center of the most well-known Reeperbahn festival is another major reason you must visit on TAP Flight Booking !
5 Alster Arcades
The Alster Arcades, Hamburg's premier shopping district, is situated along the city's numerous canals and bridges; the only distinction is that it has high-end and exquisite stores rather than streetwear. While strolling beneath the stars and taking in the smells of delicious food coming from across the street, you can peruse the chic jewelry or the cutting-edge fashion accessories available here. Small cafes on one side of the street and a few musicians nearby give the shopping experience here a hint of the Mediterranean.
6. Neuer Wall
Neuer Wall, a kilometer-long promenade, is the most opulent location to blow your savings.
This European luxury shopping boulevard has everything to captivate your eye and win your heart, from haute couture and the best jewels to personalized footwear and designer bags.
It's not unusual to see names like Armani, Jil Sander, Mulberry, Michael Kors, Prada, and Louis Vuitton here. If you're looking for mementos specifically, Neuer Wall's own Brahmfeld & Gutruf carries some of the most captivating jewelry designs. Oh, and don't forget to go across the street to Café Engelchen for your much-needed coffee fix in between and you can book flight on tap book flight.
7. Europa Passage
Do you prefer acquiring the finest jewelry from across the world or shoes? Regardless of which, the Europe Passage is one of Hamburg's best retail centers and a must-stop!
It provides guests with an all-inclusive entertainment center and has more than 100 stores under its roof.

Budgeting for Food at Game
LARP can be an expensive hobby. Weapons are expensive, costumes can be expensive, props can be expensive, tents, camping gear, driving to and from the game if you live far away -- and that’s before you get to food! There’s a fine line to walk to what to pay to eat, and what to bring for yourself. Here’s some considerations for things to think about when you’re talking about a budget for game:
Your Time is Worth Something Consider the cost benefit analysis of purchasing a meal plan from an offered source. How much time will you save not having to cook for yourself? How much stress? It’s always cheaper to bring your own stuff with you, especially if you have a mind for inexpensive purchasing -- but always consider how much your time is worth to you.
I will, generally speaking, ‘charge’ my time at about 1.5x what I make at work, as though I were being paid overtime. That means, if you know you’re going to take 5 hours to shop for and make all of the food you mean to bring to game, you should charge your time at 7.5 hours, just to treat yourself fairly. It helps to consider that your peace of mind should have a worth to you.
This all said -- some people are given more time than money -- and will always want to take the cheapest option. This is totally fair! Just make sure that you add up the (disposable) incidental costs you may incur, ice for your cooler, propane canisters, sandwich bags, aluminum foil -- things that may add up without you really noticing them!
Don’t worry about counting coolers and camp stoves toward your meal planning budget -- they are generally one time purchases. When you’re thinking about cost and budget for those items, think about them as part of your camping supplies, not your food supplies.
Pricing a Meal Plan When pricing out a meal plan, accept the price as though you were going to have to eat out for every meal being offered. The meal plan that was offered at my game went for $30/weekend, which covered four meals (Friday dinner, and all three meals Saturday). That breaks down to $7.50 per meal, and bonus -- coffee was included!
The meals that were offered were very much meals. Hefty main dishes, good sides, and well balanced offerings meant that I was never hungry after a meal, and I had plenty of energy to continue to game. For this reason, I say when you’re making the analysis on price, don’t price meal plan against say, a sandwich off the dollar menu from McDonalds, which will not provide you the same get-up-and-go.
The meal options at game currently are a little more street food fare, hot dogs, hamburgers, tacos, etc. I don’t tend toward buying those, as most street food will upset my stomach after a meal or two, but my honest estimation is that they’re reasonably priced for the kind of food you get (a couple of bucks for a dog). If your game offers food like this, and you would be planning to go somewhere like McDonalds instead, I refer you back to point one -- your time is worth something. Having to leave site means less time at game. Take that into consideration when you’re planning.
Eat Like you’re Fifty, not Like you’re Fifteen When you’re budgeting for a meal plan (and I know I say this a lot), I think it’s worth remembering that trying to subside on Poptarts and Ramen will only last you so long. Sure, it’s cheap and easy -- but honestly, when you get to be my age (some time in the next century, I’m sure) you’ll find that trying to live on sugar, simple carbs, and crap tons of sodium is just asking to feel bloated, lethargic, and crappy all weekend long.
You’ve paid to go to LARP! You’re out and about putting your body through its paces to keep up with fights and running, and hiking around to find your next puzzle or mod. If you prioritize spending just a little more money to ensure that you’re eating right, you’ll have a much better game.
If you currently live on Poptarts and Ramen (or similar), ask yourself a few questions:
Do I often find myself feeling cranky or irritable at game, for no reason? Do I run out of energy while I’m playing? When I get home do I feel bloated for a day or two? Is my mouth always dry at game? Do I get quick bursts of energy followed by major crashing? Am I drinking energy drinks just to get through it?
If you answered yes to a lot of those questions, you’re not treating yourself right. Consider trying one game where you eat good foods, and try to get at least 5 hours of sleep each night. See how much better you feel.
Side Note: Energy Drinks are also not sustainable! I drank the crap out of them when I was in my late teens through my mid twenties. All I have to thank them for is about twenty pounds of weight gain, and heart palpitations. If you can get yourself off of Energy Drinks, I highly recommend it. Do future you a favor.
Put the Cost in Perspective Take an average weekend, and see what you’re already spending on food for the meals that you would be covering at LARP. If your LARP meal plan covers Friday night, and all three meals on Saturday, spend a couple of weekends and add up your average cost for those four meals. If you usually eat out even one of those meals at a restaurant, then chances are you won’t be spending that much more for your meal plans!
Plan for Extra Meals If you have to drive any amount of time, or like to go to Afters, include the costs for those meals in your budget concerns as well (though, see my previous point about putting them in perspective!) Many meal plans I’ve seen don’t cover real meals for Sunday morning -- though people sometimes wander around with muffins or donuts. Plan for any meals that are not covered in your meal plan, and add the costs to your budget accordingly! Nothing is more awful than trying to pack up your camp site while you’re starving for breakfast.
Try Everything Once If you’re still not sure, then try every option once. Buy the meal plan one game, pack for yourself the next, go eat offsite if you want. Hell, take a game and eat nothing but cheap pantry food. Just stick to whatever option you choose for one full game so you have a reasonable information sample set. See what works for you, and what doesn’t -- and if it stops working for you for some reason, make the run of trying stuff again.
Last Thoughts Ultimately, you can survive pretty much anything for one weekend -- so if you’ve found you made a bad choice, then just resolve to do something different for your next game. I always advocate having $20 on you, in case you just have to get yourself a burger or a cup of coffee from somewhere. But let me be the one to say that food isn’t the place to cheap out for LARP. You can save money in other places -- but be kind to yourself where your health is concerned! Bring extra water for yourself, eat food that makes you healthy and happy, and give yourself permission to take time to eat! Trust me, you’ll have a much better game.

California Highway 1 Road Trip
Six weeks ago, Highway 1 fully reopened in Big Sur, following devastating mudslides in May 2017. After $54 million worth of repairs and the removal of millions of tons of earth, rocks, and debris, travelers can once again enjoy an uninterrupted drive along the gorgeous coastal highway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
But it’s not just the views that make the trek one of the most famous road trips in the world. There’s also the food to contend with: Dotted along the winding route, you’ll find peppery smoked-fish tacos, juicy burgers smothered in eggs and melted cheese, and homemade doughnuts oozing with jelly.
Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down. Your eating adventure will continue from there—you’d better start hungry.
  Point Reyes
Side Street Kitchen
The specialty at this year-old, bright, modern diner is the crispy skinned rotisserie chicken, fragrant with herbs and served half or whole with an array of sauces, including curried yogurt, salsa verde, and chimichurri rojo. The other specialty: puffy, sugar-coated, fruit-filled apple fritters. 60 4th St., Point Reyes Station
The Boat Oyster Bar
Hog Island Oyster Co. is famed for the oysters it pulls out of the bay and supplies to top dining rooms around the country. A reservation-only café on the water features those world-class bivalves; the menu changes often, but it frequently includes Hog Island’s singular kumamotos. You can get a dozen raw for $36; even better are the barbecued ones, grilled and dripping with chipotle bourbon garlic butter. 20215 Shoreline Highway, Marshall
Half Moon Bay Area
  La Costanera
Peruvian food is having a moment in the U.S., and La Costanera, with its wall of windows overlooking the water from a second-floor dining room, has been recognized by Michelin’s Bib Gourmand. The menu has a mix of classics such as antichuchos (grilled skewers) with marinated beef heart and pork belly; empanadas; tender beer-braised lamb shank; and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin with onions, soy sauce, and a fried egg, if you want one). 8150 Cabrillo Highway, Montara
Dad’s Luncheonette
Chef Scott Clark used to cook at San Francisco’s Michelin-three-starred Saison. He’s transformed a red-painted train caboose into a cozy, wood-lined diner with a small menu of comfort food favorites. The $12 hamburger sandwich has melted cheese, a soft egg, and red onion pickles on grilled white bread; the mushroom version substitutes maitakes for the grass-fed beef. 225 Cabrillo Highway South, Half Moon Bay
Sam’s Chowder House
Seafood makes up almost the entire menu at Sam’s, including a “Captains Platter” of oysters, clams, shrimp, poke, and ceviche; an appetizer of grilled sardines; steamed clams (with the option of linguine); and lobster rolls, “naked” with butter or “dressed” with aioli. At night, the place highlights fresh catches such as Pacific swordfish and local halibut. The seats on the deck offer a panoramic ocean view. 4210 Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay
Hop Dogma Brewing Co.
The rotating array of craft brews at this locally popular beer hall might include Pyro’s Prost chili beer (pilsner brewed with jalapeño); Every Third Inquiry, a Bourbon barrel-aged stout; and the flagship Alpha Dank IPA. Guests can order food from nearby Lamas, a Peruvian and Mexican restaurant, and the tacos, burritos, and arroz con pollo will be delivered to the taproom. 270 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay
Duarte’s Tavern
Dating back to 1894, when Frank Duarte bought the place for $12 in gold, this venerable restaurant specializes in a California version of Continental cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from shrimp cocktail to pork chops with fresh applesauce. The specialties are anything with artichokes, plus the cioppino, packed with clams, shrimp, cod and especially crab, which people drive down from San Francisco to eat. 202 Stage Rd.
Santa Cruz
The Picnic Basket
Set on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the picturesque luncheonette has an all-day menu with a powerful breakfast selection: golden-brown turnovers stuffed with seasonal fruit or Niman Ranch ham and cheese; an egg-potato-greens frittata sandwich on toast; and house-made jelly doughnuts. Later in the day, hot dogs and elbow macaroni and cheese turn up on the menu. The nearby Penny Ice Creamery, where everything is house-made under the same ownership, is equally popular. 125 Beach St.
Monterey Peninsula
The Meatery
A serious, whole-animal butcher shop with impressive cuts of meat on display, this white-tiled space also serves as a deli. Sandwiches range from a hefty Reuben to banh mi made with caramelized pork belly slices, pickled vegetables, a hit of cilantro, and kewpie mayo on a French roll. A highlight is the house corned beef with sauerkraut on rye. The hot food offerings change daily: On Sundays and Mondays, there’s buttermilk-fried chicken; on Thursdays, visitors line up for the baby back ribs. 1534 Fremont Blvd., Seaside
The Bench Restaurant
Set on the impossibly scenic Pebble Beach Golf Links 18th hole, the Bench has a crowd-pleasing menu that offers all kinds of pizza-styled flatbreads: with pepperoni; with ratatouille, fennel ricotta and heirloom tomatoes; and with bench bacon and grilled, pickled red onion. The 24-ounce short rib, the Smokey Joe, is smoked for 10 hours. Aside from the best views, the outdoor deck has fire-pit tables. 1700 17 Mile Dr., Pebble Beach
Aubergine at l’Auberge Carmel
Chef Justin Cogley operates one of the country’s best under-the-radar fine-dining restaurants. Set in a Relais & Châteaux property, the intimate dining room has a $175 tasting menu that combines local ingredients in unexpected ways: A Morro Bay oyster with caviar has a hit of sea water, and seared abalone is accompanied by romaine lettuce that’s been braised and sliced in thick rounds, with lobster-infused lettuce puree. Monte Verde at 7th Ave., Carmel
Big Sur
Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant
Amid the trees in the hills off the highway, this exceptional café produces terrific pizzas from the wood oven, with a charred, bready, chewy crust and such toppings as creamy greens, mushrooms and tangy taleggio, and red sauce meatballs. The place is first and foremost a bakery: The creamy lemon curd pie in a pistachio crust is addictive, as is any pastry in the display case. 47540 Highway 1
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Post Ranch Inn, renowned for its modernist, cliffside, treehouse rooms overlooking the ocean, has a new manager, Gary Obligacion, formerly of Chicago’s celebrated Alinea. The property’s Sierra Mar restaurant is home to one country’s largest wine collections, with 14,000-plus bottles. It complements an elegant four-course tasting menu from which the seared foie gras has a garnish of hazelnuts and king salmon is paired with smoked split peas and sweet apple. 47900 Highway 1
The Sur House at Ventana Big Sur
In 2017, Ventana went through a multimillion-dollar renovation. The renovated Sur House restaurant now has outdoor fireside seating and a bar menu with smoky spice-rubbed chicken wings and open-faced tuna melt accented with pickled fennel. The dinner menu has deceptively simple dishes, such as grilled pork loin on a bed of jalapeño-spiked grits. The wine cellar is also notable: some 10,000 bottles with a focus on the Central Coast. 48123 Highway 1
San Luis Obispo
Ruddell’s Smokehouse
There’s not much barbecue along Highway 1. The notable exception is Ruddell’s, where founder Jim Ruddell set up shop in 2001 in a small building with a few tables outside. The place smokes albacore and salmon with a brown sugar and kosher salt rub; chicken is slow-cooked over hickory. The smoked seafood and poultry are available as tacos in a big French-roll sandwich or salad—and by the pound. 101 D St., Cayucas
Cracked Crab
In the surfing town of Pismo Beach, the unpretentious Cracked Crab has a blazing neon sign and lines stretching out the door. The menu changes according to availability of seafood and features an ocean’s worth of crab: dungeness cocktail with lime and avocado; puck-size, pan-seared lump blue crab cakes; and New England-style lobster rolls stuffed with crab instead. The seafood buckets offer the opportunity to mix and match wild Gulf shrimp, Alaskan crab, clams, mussels, and lobster tails; they go for $61 for one person and $79 for two and come with all the mallets and scissors you’ll need to extract the shellfish. 751 Price St., Pismo Beach
Santa Barbara
Jalama Beach Store & Grill
In Lompoc, the epicenter of Santa Barbara winemaking, is this grill, set inside a store that’s set inside the county park. The specialty is the Jalama burger: It’s quintessential Cali-style, with shredded lettuce, tomato, onions, special sauce, and a griddled bun. The burger has gotten so popular over its almost 40-year history that the name is trademarked. 9991 Jalama Rd., Lompoc
La Super-Rica Tacqueria
Famous for being name-checked by Julia Child, Super-Rica is a cheerful, white-and-turquoise stand with a large selection of options that feature stellar homemade tortillas. The tacos are filled with all kinds of grilled meats—chunks of spiced, brick-colored chorizo; adobado with tender strips of marinated pork. The Super-Rica Especial is made up cheese-stuffed green pasilla chiles that are roasted and draped over tortillas with marinated pork and more cheese, for $6. 622 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.
At the end of a dock on the harbor, this photogenic counter started out selling local seafood almost 30 years ago. Customers can still buy fish from commercial fishermen here. (There’s also a robust online store with trays of uni and stone crab claws.) The chopped caesar comes with a choice of grilled, skewered shrimp or sweet scallops. There’s more local shrimp, coated with coconut and crispy fried, garnished with onion rings. Also highly recommended are the linguine studded with garlic-sauteed clams in the shell and the monumental, steamed two-pound crab, along with a selection of local wine and beer by the pitcher. 230 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara
The Los Angeles Area
Malibu Farm
What started as a pop-up dining room by Helene Henderson in 2013 is now a farmers market-driven restaurant and café on the Malibu Pier, with outposts in Miami and Hawaii. The all-day café at the end of the dock has a lightbulb-lit menu that boasts a pile-up of Swedish pancakes with whipped cream and whatever the seasonal berries are, as well as kale caesar and BLTs with lemon aioli brushed on whole wheat. Down the pier, a slightly more serious version of the restaurant offers a tofu, spinach, and tomato scramble on weekend mornings, and nachos, featuring blue corn chips laden with black beans, melty cheese, and drizzles of sour cream in the evenings. 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu
Tallula’s
Chef Jeremy Fox, who heads up the nearby vegetable-focused Rustic Canyon, now puts a creative spin on the Mexi-Cali dining room. In a colorful space decorated with hanging plants, Fox uses exceptional local corn, served Mexican-style with smoky chipotle aioli, and accents black-cod tacos with malt tartar sauce in tender, house-made tortillas. A daily taco special is dreamed up by rotating cooks in the kitchen. The serious bar program features mezcal Manhattans on draft, as well as the obligatory margaritas. 118 Entrada Dr., Santa Monica
Father’s Office
Chef Sang Yoon began serving one of the—if not the—country’s first gourmet burgers almost 20 years ago. The Office Burger is made from freshly ground, dry-aged beef, so it’s got a deep, meaty flavor that’s further accentuated by sweet caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, and blue cheese. Accompanying fries, standard or sweet potato, are presented in a mini-shopping cart. Father’s Office is equally known for pouring dozens of local craft beers. 1018 Montana Ave., Santa Monica

CITY CHEAT SHEET: A SUMMER TRAVEL GUIDE FOR JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING
Tumblr media
Every summer, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, grows from a small Western frontier town of locals to a worldwide tourist destination for 3 million visitors. According to The Scout Guide Jackson Hole editor Jill King, the draw is easy to explain—as she puts it, “What’s prettier than the Tetons?” Thanks to endless vistas, frequent wildlife settings, down-home Western vibes, and plenty of alluring accommodations, restaurants, and shops to keep visitors happy, the town is an ideal place for a summer getaway (and a popular locale for couples tying the knot). Here, Jill, who is also the owner of staging and styling company Styling the New West, shares insider tips for enjoying her mountain city like a local in the summertime.
WHERE TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR ADVENTURE // With so many visitors flocking to Jackson Hole in the summer months, figuring out how to beat the crowds to the best hiking spots is a factor to consider when preparing for an outdoor excursion. Jill recommends getting up early to get a parking spot at the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve, where you can take a moderate hike to Phelps Lake. Or, get your heart rate going during a trek up Snow King, which includes 1.571 vertical feet of a 1.8-mile trail leading to the best views of downtown (don’t worry, for $5, you can ride the chairlift down). Jill also recommends seeing Grand Teton National Park from the water and the trails, or taking the scenic ferry ride across Jenny Lake to Hidden Falls or Inspiration Point.
Practically every local recommends that out-of-towners experience the Yellowstone Wildlife Safari from Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris, Jill says. “A day with an experienced naturalist exploring geology, wildlife, natural history, and our beautiful Yellowstone and Grand Teton Parks viewing moose, elk, deer, bison, fox, coyote, bald eagles, wolves, and even black and grizzly bears is a must,” she advises.
If you’re looking for adventure on the water, Jill suggests renting a paddle board or inner tube from Rendezvous River Sports (945 West Broadway Street) and heading out early to String Lake for a day of sun, making sure to pack sandwiches from Pearl Street Bagel (145 West Pearl Avenue)or New York City Sub Shop (20 North Jackson Street) for lunch. “For a real local thrill, jump from the infamous rock in the middle of String Lake,” Jill adds.
While all of these outdoor excursions will be Instagram-worthy, Jill and many locals ask that you skip adding a location tag when posting on social media, in an effort to keep the trails and other favorite destinations uncrowded (those in-the-know use the hashtag #tagresponsiblykeepjackonwild). Another local tip: don’t forget to clip your bear spray onto your belt loop. Last but not least, Jill recommends using locally made, high-altitude sunscreen by Trilipiderm to protect your skin while you’re out and about.
WHERE TO DINE AND DRINK // For early-morning fare, Jill recommends heading to Healthy Being Juicery (165 East Broadway), where her favorite juice blends are the Kale Yeah or Sexy Maca. After a morning of hiking, refuel with pizza at local favorite Pinky Gs (50 West Broadway)—Jill says their gluten-free veggie pie is must-try. If you’re in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, indulge in the perfect European coffee, gelato, or a handcrafted Florentine at CocoLove (115 West Broadway) near the Wort Hotel.
Wind down after a day spent outdoors at Picas Mexican Restaurant (1160 Alpine Lane), where Jill likes to sit outside and sip one of the best and (cheapest) Margaritas in town with a side of warm, salty chips, authentic guacamole, and fresh salsa.
If you’re craving Italian for dinner, Jill suggests heading to Orsetto (161 North Center Street), where she recommends starting your meal with the housemade meatballs at the bar, followed by delicious Italian-American classics.
For a true Jackson Hole dinner experience, pay a visit to the old-fashioned soda fountain at the recently reopened institution Jackson Drug (15 East Deloney Avenue), known for its local beef and homemade ice cream. If you’re feeling up for the challenge, order “The Ralph Burger,” a three-pound organic beef hamburger with meat sourced from local legend Jackson Hole Hereford Ranch. If you can finish it by yourself in under an hour, your meal is free—plus you’ll get your photo on the wall.
If you’re seeking a great watering hole, you’re in luck. Jackson Hole is home to many iconic bars, including the famous Silver Dollar Bar at the Wort Hotel (50 Glenwood Street) and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar (25 North Cache Street), where visitors can sit on a saddle and revisit the old west.
WHERE TO TAKE IN THE LOCAL ATTRACTIONS // The mountains aren’t Jackson Hole’s only claim to fame. Jill suggests grabbing a Start Bike and wheeling around town to see the famous Antler Arches (2-60 North Cache Street) and “Howdy, Stranger” sign at the top of Grand Teton Pass. She also recommends finding a spot to dip your toe in the Snake River, a local rite of passage.
For a touristy but picture-perfect vantage point, catch a ride in the old-fashioned Stagecoach at the Wooden Shack on Town Square (located at the corner of Broadway and Cache), and then grab some taffy from Yippy I-O Candy (84 East Broadway Avenue).
WHERE TO SHOP // Want to dress like a local? Jill has you covered. First stop: go to HideOut Leathers (40 Center Street) for the leather coat of a lifetime. Then, grab a Copperdot Leather Goods cowhide clutch from BelleCose (48 East Broadway Avenue). Pick up some new Levi’s and a custom pearl shirt from Western Range (36 East Broadway Avenue) and a new pair of cowboy boots from Wyoming Outfitters (12 Center Street). Last but not least, add a custom hat from Christy at Sing Hat Co. or from Sarah at Crown & Brim.
If you’re looking for a keepsake to commemorate the trip or simply seeking out a unique find, there are a variety of retailers to visit during an afternoon shopping excursion. Locals love to find vintage bargains at Womenfolk (140 East Broadway). Headwall Sports (520 U.S. 89) is the perfect place to find a backpack. Pick up a locally-inspired piece, like an antler bowl from Shawn Rivett Designs, at Twenty Two Home (45 East Deloney Avenue). Visit Altitude (48 East Broadway) and shop for a chic new sweater to keep you warm during cool mountain nights. Invest in a pair of Marsell boots from HABITS (35 West Deloney Avenue). Browse the western-chic attire at Rodeo at Teton Village. Or, if you prefer a sparkly souvenir, Jill recommends checking out the Teton Silhouette Ring or Snake River bangles from JC Jewelers Jackson Hole(132 North Cache Street).
WHAT NOT TO MISS // Experience the Jackson Hole Shootout every Monday through Saturday on the town square at 5:45. Saturdays, you’ll want to head to the Farmers Market in Town Square early in the morning and fill your basket with fresh cut flowers from Heides and feast on a breakfast of baked goods and fruit.
On Sundays, Jill loves to grab some charcuterie and a bottle of Prosecco  from Bin 22 (200 West Broadway) and head to “The Vill”—what locals call Teton Village—for Concerts on the Commons. Also on Sunday nights, you can experience cowboy “church” by dancing it up at The Stagecoach Bar (5755 West WY-22), where Jill recommends treating yourself to the truffle fries and a longneck.
Wednesday evenings, stop by the People’s Market, a zero-waste, family-friendly event with local food and live music at the base of Snow King, for a local craft beer and pub fare from Roadhouse—or, any day of the week, pick up a six pack from the brewery, head up to Snow King, and crush cans on the summit.
Wednesdays and Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day (plus a few additional dates in July), go full wild west at the Jackson Hole Rodeo (447 Snow King Avenue), a tradition since the first cowboy settlers came to town more than a century ago. Jill is married to a cowboy rancher, and she loves that the Jackson Hole Rodeo delights tourists while also retaining an authentic local appeal. The views of the sun setting over the mountains from the Rodeo Grounds are pretty spectacular, too.
To learn about additional events in Jackson Hole, Jill recommends visiting the Center for the Arts website, as well as the events calendar maintained by nonprofit Center of Wonder. And, of course, follow The Scout Guide Jackson Hole for more insider information.

Philadelphia’s Only Pool Club and Dining Oasis Set to Reopen for Summer with Covid 19 Changes added to Google Docs
Philadelphia’s Only Pool Club and Dining Oasis Set to Reopen for Summer with Covid 19 Changes
Glu Hospitality announces the season grand opening of Vesper Dayclub starting this Friday, July 3rd in time for the Independence Day holiday weekend. Philadelphia’s only 21 and up swimming pool and outdoor dining oasis will offer local residents the opportunity to enjoy swimming, outdoor sips and poolside eats without having to leave the city boundaries. For those adults not opting to go to the shore and who are staying close to home, this will bring a brand new option in the city that joins legal cocktails to go and expanded outdoor dining in the city. The 30,000 gallon heated saltwater pool and all of its amenities are located in the heart of Northern Liberties at 1031 Germantown Avenue. Along with Vesper Dayclub, guests and the public are invited to also dine at Philadelphia’s lush secret outdoor garden and cafe with Germantown Garden. Germantown Garden this week doubles their menu for the summer and has added additional outdoor and sidewalk seating due to high demand.
For the upcoming season, Vesper pool and amenities have been deep cleaned at the start of the season, with regular deep cleanings schedule during the summer. New protocols include temperature checks upon entry, a new social distanced floor and table layout, closure of the bars, addition of hand sanitizing stations, a new reservation-only system for dining, and other safety protocols to meet and exceed local and state health recommendations. Masks must be worn to get in the front door upon entry and when guests are moving around or go to the bathroom. Anytime guests are at their own private table they can remove masks to eat and drink. All guests must agree to a temperature check at the front door.
Individual table reservations and ordering at the bars is not allowed per city and state recommendations. Instead, all guests must order through their server. Servers will offer food and drink to all guests in all areas of the pool that include adjacent day beds, private bungalow seating areas, loungers and outdoor tables.
There will be no public club-style parties and no nighttime entertainment. Later in the season, if appropriate there may be background-only music added – but there are no immediate plans of this to start.
Seating will be limited to only 20% occupancy. This is something the owners felt strongly about even though they could do up to 50%. Owners of Vesper felt very strongly about putting safety first.
Reservations to use the pool and dining options are a must for 202. Any paid and current member can make a reservation. Season pass memberships are $35 and includes free weekday entry with your reservations, discounted cover on the weekend, ability to bring guests for a discounted price, 10% off your food bill at Germantown Garden, lowered minimum spends for the bungalows and poolside booths, and other perks. Season pass members pay a $10 cover charge on weekends. Guests with members are $10 per weekdays and $20 per weekend days.
Daybeds, loungers and bungalows are available for reservations, with pricing varying based on reservations and occupancy. Pricing also is different on weekdays, weekends and holidays. Pricing and reservation inquires are available on the website.
Due to the layout of the daybeds, bungalows and loungers, the new layout leaves ample room for social distancing, with the bungalows having full floor to ceiling walls in between each individual space.
“Vesper Dayclub returns for the summer of 2020 with a great, relaxed option for those looking to safely swim and enjoy the sunny days ahead,” said co-owner Derek Gibbons, of Glu Hospitality. “We have spent a lot of time and attention upgrading and adding safety/ health protocols to ensure the health and well being of our staff and our guests. We are focused on offering a laid back and lower key vibe for this year. We are opting for less of a day club party vibe and more of a safe, relaxing and low-key swimming and dining experience. During this global pandemic, Vesper Dayclub is a unique opportunity for those that love the water but are staying local and keeping away from the crowds at the shore. We are a great option for those looking to make the most of their summer in the city.”
For food, Chef Chino Chang will be serving up a full menu of casual bar favorites and light snacks, including a selection of flatbreads (from Vesper’s pizza oven), chicken tenders, guacamole and chips, fruit bowls, parfaits, sliders, hot dogs, hamburgers, and other summer favorites. Look for specials as the summer progresses. For drinks, look for cold beer, frozen and non-frozen summer cocktails, standard bar spirits, cider, adult hard seltzers and more.
Next door, Germantown Garden is also now open for summer of 2020 with a beautiful, lush and hidden garden setting that offers safe and socially distanced dining with shade from the trees overhead. This entirely outdoor restaurant has been at capacity since summer started due to a city-wide focus on outdoor dining in response to the global pandemic. As of this week, Germantown Garden added extra hours, new daytime brunch hours (with brunch menu to follow), added more sidewalk seating and also nearly double the menu of options. Diners can now enjoy seafood entrees for a taste of the shore, burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and small bites, plus options from Glu Hospitality’s Hunnies Crispy Chicken. Starting next week, look for even more food options at Germantown Garden as Glu Hospitality will announce a brand new food concept that will run out of the Vesper and Germantown Garden kitchens. For cocktails, look for pitchers and glasses of summertime favorites, plus cocktails designed specially for the location by the famous Hop Sing of Hop Sing Laundromat.

Oklahoma City – Revisited – Part 1
Oklahoma City – Revisited – Part 1
Oklahoma
Sunday - Monday, August 19-20, 2018
Clear, 88°
Resilience is woven deeply into the fabric of Oklahoma.
Throw us an obstacle, and we grow stronger. - Brad Henry
The drive east, from Ogallala on Interstate 80 to York and McCool Junction, was directly into the sun for the first time in a while.  There was still smoke in the air from the forest fires further west that cut down on the views, but it seemed to be getting better the farther east we drove.
There was not much to look at in this part of the country other than miles and miles of corn, hay, and other crops.  The towns were mostly nondescript farming communities with the occasional industrial complex off to one side of the road or the other.  When there is not much to look at during the time traveling it seems like it takes forever to get from point A to point B.  It is just the constant road noise or the sounds of the expansion joints in the pavement that give that ever constant varoom sound as the tires pass over them.
Several hours pass until the turn south on highway 81 which is almost a due south direction into Oklahoma City.  We stopped for fuel during a thunderstorm in Salina, Kansas and there was another RV fueling ahead of me.  As we talked, he shared that they were relocating for jobs in St. Louis.  Highway 81 becomes Interstate 135 in Salina, and once back on the road from refueling there were only a few scattered thunder clouds off in the distance.  There may be a small shower or two but for the most part it was a hot, clear day.  It took a couple more hours to arrive in Wichita, Kansas where the interstate highway became I-35 into Oklahoma City.
Another few hours and it was time for Twin Fountains RV Resort.  During the first part of the trip, it was such a wonderful place I wanted to come back for another visit.  There were a few things left to see in Oklahoma City and it was great to be back before heading east toward home.
Twin Fountains was such a fun place and out of all the campgrounds and RV parks along the way it was absolutely the best in a number of areas.  It was by far the cleanest with nice restrooms and laundry facilities along with a pool, hot tub, and mini-golf by the clubhouse.  My favorite part was the full bar and café by the pool. Having afternoon and evening food and drinks available makes your stay there pleasant and enjoyable.  I am going to post my trip adviser review of Twin Fountains in my next post as it is such a great place to stay.
Monday – Let me first say this is the first day in over two months that there is no forest fire smoke in the air.  It was a somewhat lazy day doing chores like laundry and maintenance on the RV that are needed every now and then.  Later in the afternoon, we headed for the bar and talked with the owner, Dow, and his resort goodwill ambassador, Don Gardner, whom we met and befriended on the previous visit.
Dow and I at his Semper Fi Bar @ Twin Fountains RV Resort
Dow is also a veteran of the Korean War era serving in the Marine Corp surviving the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.  A really nice man, who wants to ensure everyone has a great time at his resort.  On both trips, we had a few drinks and conversations which enriched me as I got to know him better with each stop.
Don gave us great ideas about places to see while in the area.  One was in a small town north of Oklahoma City called Fort Reno where there was an internment camp set up and used during World War II.  He also told us of a great place to eat while in El Reno and to try both the onion burger and their onion relish hot dog, both were amazing.  The first thing you notice in El Reno, Oklahoma is the wind.  It is the howling sort, screaming at you down the wide lanes, and making quick work of hair styles, signs not properly tied down, and open doors.  It is a wind worthy of conversation, and in lesser towns, its gusts could be the sole focus of discussion for days.  But in El Reno, they have onion burgers.
The place was called Sid’s Diner which has been featured on television on Man vs Food and the food network.
 Sid’s Diner
Let me say, Don was right about this wonderful bit of history along the old Route 66.
 Old Route 66 signs
A little history:
“But before there were burgers in El Reno, there were cows.  Back in the 1860s, ranchers used the Chisholm Trail to drive cattle north to Kansas.  One of the stopping points along the trail was just north of the current town.  At the same time, Native American reservations were being set up in Oklahoma, and Fort Reno was built to “maintain order” after several Native American uprisings.  After the Oklahoma land run opened up some of those lands to white settlers, a settlement called Reno City was built by the fort (though moved closer to a nascent rail center), but the name was changed to El Reno when the US postal service began confusing mail intended for Nevada.
In 1926, Route 66, aka the Main Street of America, aka the Mother Road, was created to give wannabe actors and potential key grips traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles a standardized route to follow west, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.  A side consequence of the route was providing mom-and-pop business opportunities for people in towns along said route, and it just so happened to run right through El Reno.  According to the John T. Edge’s excellent book “Hamburger & Fries: An American Story”, at this time, a man named Ross Davis ran a restaurant called the Hamburger Inn in town along Route 66.
Because this was the Depression, hamburger meat was expensive, but onions were cheap. Davis started “smashing them into the meat with the back of his spatula.  He called them Depression burgers and he’d smash a half-onion’s worth of shreds into a five-cent burger.” Apparently Davis’s spot was in a prime position -- at the intersection of Route 66 and Highway 81 -- and word of his creation spread quickly. Several other eating establishments in El Reno followed suit, and began making their own versions of the fried onion burger.  A burger star was born.” (www.thrillist.com)
It was interesting that Don knew of these places and shared them so we could make a drive out and experience firsthand the old Fort Reno Post and the great food in these small towns on Old Route 66.
Fort Reno began as a military camp in 1874 in the Indian Wars Era.  It was established at the insistence of Agent John Miles at the Darlington Indian Agency, to pacify and protect the Cheyenne & Arapahos there.  Troops from the 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers) were dispatched from Fort Sill, but, because of other Indian unrest, were detained at the nearby Wichita Agency at present day Anadarko.
The cavalry and infantry stationed at Fort Reno played an important role in the transition of the area from Indian Territory status to Oklahoma statehood in 1907. United States Cavalry units, including the Buffalo Soldiers (Black soldiers of the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry, and the 24th and 25th Infantry), and the Cheyenne & Arapaho Indian Scouts, along with the U.S. Marshal Service, maintained the peace on the central plains until the turn of the century.
German Prisoners of War and U.S. Army Guards:  During World War II, an eastern portion, 94 acres, of the Fort Reno lands served as an internment work camp for German Prisoners of War.  Mostly from Gen. Rommel’s Afrikakorp, captured in North Africa, over 1,300 Germans were brought to Fort Reno by rail.  While imprisoned here, the German POW’s were hired as laborers for local farmers and in 1944 built the Chapel located to the north of the Parade Grounds.  The west side of the historic military cemetery is where 70 German and Italian Prisoners of War are interred.  Most of these men died at other POW camps in Oklahoma and Texas.  Only one Fort Reno German POW died while imprisoned at the Fort Reno internment camp.
 Fort Reno Cemetery
There are 62 German and 8 Italian POW’s interred at the Cemetery added to the west end of the Post Cemetery.  A number of Germans and Italians have made special trips to view the resting place of their relatives or friends.  Every year a special memorial wreath appears on Veterans’ Day in remembrance of those prisoners buried at the Fort Reno cemetery.  A German-American Heritage Day (Volkstrauertag) is held at Fort Reno in November. (fortreno.org)
El Reno also had a small but nice veteran’s memorial park in the downtown area.  It had marble stone markers depicting the Vietnam Era.

And the Korean War Era.

Don had another suggestion, that we visit the 45th Infantry Division Museum located in Oklahoma City, just a few miles from the RV Park.  There is a substantial collection of cartoons by World War II cartoonist Bill Mauldin, who served with the 45th during the war.  It was a very interesting visit; large static display of tanks, vehicles, planes and helicopters stood on the 15 acre compound.  I found the following information quite interesting during the visit:
Following World War I, the National Defense Act of 1920 created the authority to form the 45th Infantry Division from the four states of Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.  The division was organized in 1923, and Oklahoma members camped together for the first time at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1924.
The Thunderbirds trained at Fort Sill, OK; Camp Barkeley, TX; Fort Devens, MA; Pine Camp, NY; and Camp Pickett, VA.  They had trained hard for their part in World War II, and on July 10, 1943 the division participated in their first of four amphibious landings.  In all, the division, served 511 days in combat; fighting their way across Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany.  The National Guard Division of the southwest became highly regarded by both regular army forces and the enemy for their valiant efforts and fighting abilities.
The 45th Infantry Division served with General George S. Patton’s U.S. 7th Army during the Sicilian campaign, and when the fighting was done, the commander had this to say about the division, “Your division is one of the best, if not the best division in the history of American arms.”
The 45th Infantry Division Museum is proud to have in its collection more than 200 of Bill Mauldin’s original World War II cartoons.  These significant drawings primarily date from 1944 and 1945 when Mauldin had reached the pinnacle of his wartime work.
The Thunderbirds made their first of four amphibious landings on July 10, 1943, hitting the beaches of Sicily in Operation Husky.  The war, for the Thunderbirds, would take them from Sicily, to mainland Europe, through Italy, Southern France, and finally Germany.  The World War II gallery features artifacts and photographs which tell the story of the division’s actions in the European Theater of Operations. Also housed in the World War II gallery are artifacts owned by Adolf Hitler. These unique artifacts were taken from his apartment in Munich and his mountain retreat, The Eagle’s Nest, in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
Adolph Hitler pieces on display in the museum
Perhaps the most unique item was taken from Hitler’s Berlin Bunker.  Lt. Colonel Horace Calvert of Oklahoma City took the mirror from the bedroom of the Berlin Bunker.  Visitors can gaze into the mirror once belonging to the leader of Nazi Germany.
 Adolph Hitler’s Mirror
On April 29, 1945 elements of the 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division liberated the concentration camp at Dachau; this action reminded all who took part in this historic liberation the reasons for being at war with Germany and left an indelible mark on the men who witnessed the atrocities of life in a concentration camp. (45th.45wp.com)
Adolph Hitler’s Personal Items are in this collection
It was an interesting day seeing all of the history in and around Oklahoma City.  I never knew about the internment camp at Fort Reno which kept the German, Italian and French POW’s interred toward the end of World War II.  The great food in El Reno reminded me of The Varsity in Atlanta and was great.  The 50’s themed diner was crowded with people enjoying the wonderful food.  The 45th Museum had so many things on display inside and on the grounds we could have spent hours before we saw it all.
There is more to come from Oklahoma City, while Traveling Life’s Highways.
