context: Yamato and Misao are in a fishing trip. Yamato was studying the local ecosystem while Misao fishes.

The two of them brought Whale cube and let him enjoy being in the water.

Minific idea: Whale Cube bites on Misao's bait, and pulls on it hard. Yamato helps Misao pull the fishing rod only for the both of them to be pulled underwater, drenching the both of them.

...Is Cube Whale lowkey trying to do a 101 Dalmatians moment?

Why yes. Yes it is.

"Don't stray too far away, okay Cube Whale?" Yamato called as he waded into the water, letting the mech go in a deeper part of the water before going back to the shore.

"Yamato, just tell me if I get anything interesting," Misao said as he cast out his line. "I'll let you study it for a bit before letting it go again, if you want."

"Sure, sounds like a plan," Yamato agreed, getting out a clipboard and a camera from his bag. "Just give me a yell, I'll just be around here taking some photos."

"Okay then."

The pair worked in a companionable silence. Yamato snapped photos of the surroundings and the animals he happened to chance upon- a couple of crabs hobbling about, a flock of seabirds flying above the waves, and even some fish swimming in the shallows. Misao patiently sat at the shore, waiting for something to nibble at his bait.

Meanwhile, the Zyuoh Cube looked at the two clueless humans at the shore from under the sea, planning to play a little prank on them. It swam up to the shallows, unnoticed by the pair, and chomped on the bait that Misao had at the end of his fishing line, giving it a little tug.

"Ah! I got something!" Misao exclaimed, starting to reel his line in. Upon hearing the Ranger and feeling himself getting pulled at, Zyuoh Whale upped its game and tugged just a bit harder, as if it were struggling against Misao.

"Micchan? Something wrong?"

"I- I think I got a big one, Yamato!"

"Oh, really? Hang on, let me help you!" Yamato exclaimed, putting his things down and running over to help the other Ranger. "Alright Misao, let's catch this thing-" He said, grabbing unto the fishing rod and helping Misao hold it as he reeled in his catch.

Zyuoh Whale stopped pretending to be caught, and yanked on the line with all its might. The two Zyuohgers screamed as they toppled over, letting go off the fishing rod as they landed in the water with a great splash.

And to the Zyuoh Cube's great delight, Yamato landed right on top of Misao, in a position that made both blush brilliantly red as they stammered apologies to each other- but making no attempts to move away from each other.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry Micchan, I didn't mean to-"

"No, no, it was my fault, I should've..."

Cube Whale surfaced, tittering at the pair. Yamato looked at him in disappointment. "Why did you do this to me, Cube Whale?" he groaned with a pout.

Cube Whale just laughed, spat Misao's bait at them, and swam merrily away.

Welcome Home

The Zyuohgers are with Yamato in his childhood home.

It was a huge weight off of Yamato's shoulders when he and his father were able to reconcile. He might not like to admit it to anyone, but he does treasure any and all connections he has, including that of his father.

"Oooh, Yamato, I didn't know you were this rich!" Leo exclaimed.

"It's not actually my money," Yamato shook his head. "This was where I lived before I ran away."

"You sure lived a comfortable life." Amu wistfully added.

"But circumstances lead to you living with your uncle." Tusk surmised.

"I don't think I can stomach choosing not to go home without reconciling with my family." Sela offered.

"I can appreciate a man with a principle in life." Leo nodded.

"It's all in the past," Yamato shook his head. "Dad and I have already reconciled about things."

"So we're meeting the man who you took after then?" Leo asked, enthused.

"One of the reasons, yes," Yamato nodded. "I'm also here to see if I can donate some of my old clothes."

Yamato brought his fellow Zyuohgers inside his old family home, both to meet his father, and gather some of his old things. There was a donation drive at the hospital his father was working for, for the Zyumans, and humans, who found themselves homeless due to the constant attacks by Genis's Deathgalien forces.

As they waited for Yamato's father to get home, the Zyumans looked around, curious about Yamato's old home.

"Still, where is Misao, he's pretty late, isn't he?" Leo voiced out.

"He said about getting his doctor a gift," Sela answered. "Last time was interrupted by Larry-san's curiosity on his The Gunrod and Zyuoh the Light."

"It really was curious how Misao gained Zyuman abilities without the Mark of the King," Tusk added. "How did Genis know that the cubes on Azauld's body came from the Earth?"

"He's been watching our fights, right?" Sela pointed out. "He could've figured it out by then as we had been using our cube animals to battle."

"We may never know, right?" Amu offered. "I mean we've destroyed Genis the Deathgaliens with him."

"Sorry for intruding," Someone's voice interrupted their train of thought.

The Zyuohgers looked at the entrance and was greeted by Misao, dressed in a gray suit and tie. With him was a paper bag.

"Micchan!" Yamato greeted. "Come in, Dad's not home yet." He beckoned for his friend to get inside the house.

"Yamato, I did not realize you were wealthy," Misao exclaimed as he walked inside the house. "I feel like my gift would be very small compared to the care he has given me." He slumped down on the floor and brought his knees to his chest.

"Ugh, there's that troublesome trait." Leo groaned.

Yamato simply rolled at the Lion Zyuman, who looked unapologetic, before turning his attention towards Misao.

"That couldn't be, Micchan." Yamato assured his fellow Zyuohger. "Dad appreciates any and all gifts he receives from his patients."

Yamato internally winced at the words he uttered. He and his father haven't really communicated all that much even when his mother was still alive. He couldn't really know how his father would react to Misao's gift.

He just hoped that he did not make the wrong assumption.

"A-are you sure?" Misao perked up.

Yamato nodded.

"I hope he likes the gift!" Misao stood up from his position on the floor.

"What did you get him anyway?" Leo asked.

"Last time, you said you were getting him some fish." Sela added.

"I just got him something that I think he would need as a doctor," Misao admitted. "But not exactly something he'd need for his profession."

"Need as a doctor but don't need as a profession?"

"I see, you did not buy him a coffee maker, did you?" Yamato winced.

"No, why?"

"Dad's never been a fan of coffee," Yamato admitted. "That's a relief." He sighed.

"Yamato? Are you here?"

Yamato rushed to the entrance.

"Okaeri, Tou-san."

"Tadaima, Yamato."

"Tadaima, Tou-san."

"Okaeri, Yamato."

The father and son hugged each other tightly, years of deep resentment one had for the other, all for simple misunderstanding, it was about time the two of them had shared a hug.

The Zyumans in the house, and Misao, looked at the father-son pair with a smile on their faces. They were happy for Yamato, that he had reunited and reconciled with his father after everything that has happened.

"Dad, these are my friends."

Yamato introduced his fellow Zyuohgers to his father, with the context that he met them when he had wandered into Zyuland.

"This is Mondo Misao, he's Zyuoh The World."

"Kazakiri-sensei, thank you for restoring me back to health." Misao bowed at his attending doctor. "I hope you like the gift I bought for you." He offered the paper bag he had with him earlier.

Kageyuki placed the paper bag on top of a nearby end table and retrieved a small black box from it. He opened the box and was greeted by the sight of a black power bank.

"Thank you, Mondo-kun, this will surely help prolong my phone's battery," Kageyuki thanked his son's friend. "Especially considering I have broken three of my four power banks during those Deathgalien attacks."

"It's the least I can do for restoring me back to health even when I walked out of the hospital." Misao bowed.

"Still, you bought the most expensive brand of power banks out there," Kageyuki was amazed. "Are you sure I can have it, this must-have cost a fortune?"

"It's nothing," Misao smiled.

"Right, how do you afford these, Micchan?" Yamato asked. "I mean you bought my uncle a high-quality whetstone for Christmas."

"I make plush toys for a living," Misao admitted. "I get commissioned to make plush toys by some company and they pay me as soon as I give them the product."

"Well that's a given, your plush toys are so cute," Amu squealed. "I want a plush toy for everyone too."

"R-really?"

"Those were cute." Leo nodded. "I want one of the others too."

Everyone descended into chaos, talking about Misao's cute plush toys and how he makes a living out of it and about how they each want the entire team set with them.

"You earned yourself a good set of friends, son." Kageyuki praised. "Protect and cherish them."

"I will."

Kageyuki then gave his son a push towards his friends before nodding.

"Oi! I want one of the whole team too!" Yamato exclaimed.

"Then, I'll make one for each of us," Misao nodded, excited to make his friends some plush toys of themselves.

"Of course, we're paying you, Micchan," Yamato gave his friends a look. "Right, guys?"

"Y-yeah." Leo and the others reluctantly agreed.

"It's fine, Yamato." Misao shook his head. "It's for the team."

"Nope, we are paying." Yamato shook his head. "This is how you make a living and we won't be good friends if we will just mooch off of your talents."

"That does make sense," Tusk nodded. "Misao does make a living making those toys, it's only natural that we pay for his work and materials."

"I guess you're right." Amu pouted.

"Well then, I'll just give everyone a 70% discount." Misao nodded.

"Nope, we're paying the full price." Yamato shook his head.

"A-are you sure Yamato?" Misao gulped.

"Why? Did I say something wrong Micchan?"

Misao whispered something into Yamato's ear.

"Eeeeh?!" Sela exclaimed as Yamato gulped from what he had heard.

Misao simply nodded.

"Yamato, take the 70% discount!" Sela demanded. "In exchange, we'll help spread your work and the word around."

"I guess that's fine." Yamato sighed.

"What did you hear, Sela-chan?!" Amu questioned her friend.

"You don't want to know." Sela shook her head. "You really don't."

"I guess that makes sense," Yamato sighed again. "He did buy three, no, four sets of complete suits because each of them got ruined in the fight against the Deathgalien, a yukata during summer, not to mention uncle's whetstone and dad's power bank."

"I do make them by hand." Misao offered. "And the materials are expensive."

"What about the fishes you catch?" Leo asked. "What do you do with them?"

"I sell those too," Misao answered. "While I wait for the fish, I make some plush toys."

"You sure are resourceful, Misao-kun." Amu smiled.

Misao blushed at the compliment as Yamato's father brought some snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy.

Creature Cubed (Drabble Prompt for soulsbetrayed)

“So, explain this again.” The little Mandrake, Sprout asks Hana as Amelda carries him alongside the Zyuman girl.

“Ok, the simplest way to put it that this Earth you know was once a lot bigger and held a lot more life. Then Earth and Zyuland split. The humans evolved on Earth and the Zyumans evolved in Zyuland.” Hana puts her hands behind her head.

“Yeah, I’m following you so far.” Sprout ponders this. “And it’s all because of the fight this Cetas guy had with a destroyer?”

“Right. Cetas was the great champion of Zyuland, and he had to make a call that would save everyone.” Hana smiles at the thought of Cetas. There’s a statue of him in Zyuland, paying him proper respect now.

“So, if I may ask, how does that affect what we’re searching for today?” Amelda asks, still not sure how the different worlds work. Does this mean there’s an alternate underground kingdom where Hana comes from?

“While the people were safely separated into two worlds, the great weapons, the Cube Animals, were split between the worlds. Bear, Mole, Bat, Giraffe, Platypus, Octopus, these all wound up on Earth in various places. And there may yet be more. That’s what we’re looking for today.” Hana smiles. “Based on the rumor mill at my school, there’s an unusual rock formation that some of the students saw while out hiking. It wasn’t there a month ago.”

“Couldn’t it have been moved by tremors?” Amelda considers. “We did have a rather large quake last week.”

“It could be. But the other part of this is that rock type doesn’t match. The surrounding rocks are granite. This is obsidian.” Hana smiles as she holds a branch back so Amelda can enter the hiking trail.

“That is definitely out of place.” Amelda admits. “So, how far up this trail do we have to go?”

“Almost three-quarters of a mile, and then we turn right at a freshwater spring.” Hana responds.

“And if this does happen to be one of these cube animals, what are you going to do?” Sprout asks.

“Well, I’m going to wake it up, and send it to meet with the Zyuman defenders of Earth, the Zyuohgers.” Hana says it like its the simplest thing in the world.

“That’s a worthwhile goal. Is there another reason you’re doing this?” Amelda asks, her smile becoming just a bit wider.

“Well...I have a bet going with my teammates in Galaxy Rise. If this turns out to be a cube animal, they have to each buy me either a set of sweets from KiraPati, or a cake from Lucky Spoon. I’ll have to buy the desserts for them if I’m wrong, and I can’t lose another bet.”

“Well, here’s the spring.” Amelda points and turns, looking up at a sixty foot high cube of obsidian. “There is no possible way earth tremors could make something so perfectly shaped. This has to be a cube animal.”

“All right, Amelda, stand here while I try to wake it up.” Hana walks over and places her hands on the side of the stone. Nothing happens at first, then it seems to roll and shake off the layers of sediment, unfolding into an ancient creature.

“I’ve seen this before, in the fossil record.” Amelda looks up at the creature in awe. “This is an anklyosaurus!”

Hana, for her part, is gleefully taking pictures and sending them to her teammates, much to their chagrin. But before she can send this Cube Animal to be with the Zyuohgers, the hairs on the back of her neck bristle up and her tail stands up straight. She’s sensing bloodlust around her and it comes in the form of a three-headed dog monster, rushing right at Amelda.

Before she can transform, Cub Ankylo swings its hammer tail and launches the monster off the mountain with great force. With the threat handled, Cube Ankylo nuzzles against Hana, and even welcomes Amelda’s hands as she reaches out to give it pets.

The Cube Ankylo follows them down the mountainside, snapping large trees and smoothing out the hiking trail.

Three hours later,as Amelda and Hana share the Lucky Spoon cake she won from her bet, Hana sends a message to her teacher.

[Txt- Sensei Kisaragi: Sensei, can get you me the number for Zyuoh Eagle?]

[Txt-Gravity Wolf::I can, Hana. What’s going on?]

She sends him the pictures of the Cube Animals.

[Txt- Gravity Wolf: Hana, I don’t think I have to tell you this, but there’s no room in the Dizer Shed for that.]

[Txt- Sensei Kisaragi: I know, but he just won’t leave us alone.]

[Txt- Gravity Wolf: Here’s his number. When I showed him the pictures, he replied ‘How did we miss that?’]

[Txt: Sensei Kisaragi: Thank you. I love him, but I need to make sure he goes to a good home.]

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 29

It, has been a long day. Not a bad day, necessarily, but a long one. So let’s get this going. It’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 29! Here we GO!

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, we got Captain Marvelous and everything was better. Also I guess some stuff happened with the actual cast of this show.

-PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Eagle and GokaiRed are in a ferocious dogfight that returns to the ground…While The World catches up to the rest of the crew to find them fighting a bunch of crazy looking Sentai members! And also, that he has nobody to fight…He falls into despair.

-But then, there is another man of silver and gold. …No purple, though. GokaiSilver has appeared!

-Meanwhile, GokaIRed has Eagle on the backstep…And right when Eagle manages to flip it around, Gokai Change! GOOOORANGER! With his whip of the first ranger against the Eagle Riser, it becomes a vicious lashing duel…Until Eagle manages to cut that whip apart, and come at GokaiRed with sheer speed and ferocity, barely managing to rip him out of his armor while holding his own…

-But Marvelous, when Eagle hesitates, puts three rounds from his space-flintlock right into the idiot’s chest, enough to make his armor fail.

-Back at the big fight, The World knows how this works, and is ready to fight GokaiSilver…But Silver isn’t here for a big fight, he’s here to really all you stupid idiots. They don’t need to have a big fight! …Marvelous said to keep these guys busy, though. Marvelous says lots of shit! Listen do you all even realize they’re in a crossover episode?!

-Marvelous has his gun to Yamato’s head. Too slow, too gentle…But Yamato sees the injury on Marvelous’s hand…

-Opening!

-Episode 29! The Champion of Champions

-So with everything able to calm down at last, the space pirates end up getting brought to the cabin, and our heroes get to learn the legend of the Super Sentai. There have been 39 teams, up to this point, making you all the 40th…Also Leo sees two cute girls and is immediately ready to flirt, until Sela hauls him back.

-All of that leads to the question of Marvelous, and why he’s seeking the Grand Champion Symbol. And speaking of Marvelous, back with him, Yamato’s bandaging up his wounds, and apologizing that it got so rough, that he had to go all out. …You were holding back, kid? Well of course he was. He saw Marvelous make a point of getting Bunglay and his summon’s attention instead of just slipping off…You had a reason for it. And there aren’t a lot of dishonest reasons to make that kind of show.

-You fight with honor, Marvelous. You’re willing for things to be harder, so long as they’re done right. Yamato can see an honest core to you. And so, he asks, honestly and earnestly, to return this relic of the zyuman people.

-Marvelous promptly pulls his gun, instead.

-While back at the cabin, the core four explain how that Symbol powers the Link Cube. Their only way home. It’s not just a weapon, or a tool, or a historical relic…It’s their only hope of getting to see their families again.

-And for these four pirates, who lost family to a great battle…They can understand and respect that…

-As Yamato calls Marvelous’s bluff, ice cold. You don’t have the eyes of a killer, captain. …And you’ve got stones bigger than your brain, kid. But then, what Red hasn’t, over these forty years?

-Aaand that’s when Bunglay finds the pair. Instincts Awakened! Gokai Change! The fight is on…

-While the others get vibes! Bungay’s got to be on the move…And neither crew i going to let him just have their leaders!

-While Bunglay manages to rip some memories out of GokaiRed’s skull…And though Eagle hauls him off, he’s on the ragged edge, running half empty…

-When Bunglay calls up a bunch of GokaiRed’s best foes! …Shit, those are some rough foes…They’re up against the edge of the cliff, with few options and fewer ideas…As the gun barrage begins!

-They’re sent to the dirt below, their armors failing…It’s a damn good thing the teams find them at that point, or they could’ve died.

-And while they have time…Marvelous presents the Zyuohgers with a simple dilemma. Bunglay’s after this Symbol of yours, and the Whale connected to it. He and his crew take it back into space, and Bunglay follows. You still want this thing, even knowing it brings that much danger?

-…Of course. By their honor and their pride, they’re going to set this right. Bungled needs to be stopped, not lured away like a dog after a bone.

-…Then good luck with it, kids. Have fun. He shoves the Symbol right into Yamato’s hands, and the thing activates, unfolding from a projector into a cannon…And that’s about when Bunglay and his pack of summons find them. Well then, one quick round along with the new kids…All together?

-They stand, twelve strong! Gokai Change! Instincts Awakened! GOOOKAIGER! And Yamato Instincts Awakened with the Grand Symbol, bringing upon the power of the WHALE! It showers upon him, forging a new helm and longboat….!

-Gokai Red! Gokai Blue. Gokai Yellow! Gokai Green! Gokai Pink. Goooookai SILVER! Pirate Sentai, GOKAIGER! Champion of the surging waves, ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah, ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest, ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts, ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Champion of champions…ZYUOH WHALE! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-This planet, is under the Super Sentai’s protection! And all twelve of them charge forth full of fury and grand heroism, weapons at the ready, as they face a ferocious mix of historical villainy! Foes of all different eras that Captain Marvelous and his crew helped face down…But they stand united, bringing a ZYUOH SLASH down on one, and (All) Beast Unleashing on another to chew him to nothing!

-While Gokai Pink and Green polish up their weapons a little before being forced to get in, and stand with their crew!

-Gokai Change! ALL RED! FLASHGUN! BOUKENGER! CARRANGER! MAGIRUANGER! SHINKENGER! Gokai Change! ALL RED! SUN VULCAN! GOSSIPER! GINGAMAN! GEKIRANGER! ZYURANGER! FINAL WAVE! The strengths of ten years of history unite, taking down two more…!

-While GokaiRed and Whale face down Bunglay himself, and the few tricks he still has up his sleeve! But as fierce as these foes are, they’re not able to stop Whale’s sheer speed and power, or the Megaman-ass cannon strapped to his arm…!

-Which, when he gives it a charge, pulls so much more than he thought possible…Excess energy showers off the barrel, as he lines up a single shot…ZYUOH FINAL! One rip of the trigger, and it’s enough to send him nearly flat on his ass, as the beam arcs into the sky…. skirting around the moon’s gravitational field…And coming down onto them in a single mighty explosion! God. Damn. Even GokaiRed is boggled, and a little scared of that thing…

-And Eagle promptly puts it away, letting that new armor fall…While Bunglay, who survived the mess, calls up one last big monster to give himself an escape plan!

-Pulling in a movie villain…One who nearly handed the Gokaigers their ass!

-Well then, only one option. Animal Kingdom Combination! WILD TOUSAI KING! …Why are the Gokaigers here?! So how’s this one work, you spin the boxes right? Please, just, let the Zyuohgers do their job! You have to spin with PURPOSE!

-Yeah well there’s somewhere to shove keys in this thing, right? Because they’ve got a plan. DENJIMAN! Draw upon the strength of history…With the Electron Full Moon SLASH!

-And LINEMAN! Super Big Burst! The finishing blows, one after another, start to put this huge monster on the ground…

-But bring it all into one. Four decades of heroism. All to the center…! ZYUOH FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY! Two thousand battles worth of power come together, cutting the beast apart! It is done.

-And when all is said and done, the Gokaigers have to take their exit…They’ve got another haul to seek, another battle to fight. They’re pirates, after all. Ignore their grand heroism. Anchors UP! Thus are these six off, Gai joining them properly on the battle this time…And nobody entirely realizing they left their robot bird behind.

-When Mario gets back into the cabin and why is there a robot in his house? A TALKING ROBOT PARROT?! Tell him your secrets, mechanical marvel!

Meet the Rider of Science, and his power of... Exposition!!! Yeah, it's a full review for Kamen Rider Build episode 1...

NOTE: After long consideration, I've decided to upgrade my First Impression into a full review. This doesn't necessarily mean I'll be doing the same for the following episodes. That part is... still undecided for now. If anything, I might end up doing a batch review for several episodes in each new post. Probably once a month, or at least a bi-weekly (2 episodes) release. Assuming I continue watching, of course! Also, don't expect this to be as thorough/detailed as my recap-view for "Kamen Rider Ghost". To be honest, that ended up being a bit taxing to produce... LOL. For this one in particular, I've already offered some points before, so I'm just going to expand on those. Let's start!

- Like I've pointed out before, the Pandora's Box mystery is intriguing. Sure, it's basically another plot-generating macguffin, but what is it really? Of course, after a few days, I've realized one thing: TOEI seems to have a thing with cubes lately! Remember "Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger"? And also that recent 'odd' anime series, "Sekaisuru KADO". I'm so glad "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger" has the... balls to be different. LOL. - The interesting part about this item though, is that it gave clear confirmation to the series' time setting. Much like Kyuranger, this show is being set in the future, albeit not as distant as that current Super Hero Time counterpart (after all, Kyuranger takes place more than 300 years after humanity's first space exploration). This first episode began around 10 years after the elusive Box was discovered. And that occured during humanity's first landing on Mars! - As for the "Romance of Three Kingdom" angle I said before? That's due to what the Box created: the "Skywall Disaster". When the macguffin was triggered during the Martian Exploration's homecoming ceremony, it unleashed a mysterious impenetrable Skywall that divided Japan into... yes, THREE areas. Namely, Hokuto (blue, the social welfare), Seito red, the economic recovery), and Touto (green, the traditional pacifist). The last is where this series is set (for now, at least). We have three confirmed Kamen Riders as well, so I'm guessing they will represent the Rulers/Leaders for each area. Not unlike Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Quan, right? - Oh, one more thing... that mysterious worker who conveniently activated the Box and instigated the tragedy? I could be wrong, but I think it's quite obvious enough that he's none other than our protagonist. His amnesiac state and strange obsession curiosity to the Box that was shown afterwards, strongly supported this theory. - Protagonist Sentou Kiryuu (played by yet another JUNON Super Boy winner Atsuhiro Inukai) is still grating on my nerves. Yes, I HAVE warmed up to him after 3rd viewing (kind of... sort of...), but I'm still having trouble liking this guy. He's what you get if the duo of "Kamen Rider W" had a child together: the cocky side of Shoutarou Hidari, and the naive curiosity of Philip/Raito Sonozaki. Calling himself genius and self-praising his own invention? Yikes! That's Shoutarou's bad-side all right. Also... Spada Spada Spada!!! Sentou's body language reminds me of Kyuranger's Spada. But he's far from being as likeable. For now, that is. - Inspite of that, I do like the questions surrounding his 'forgotten past'. That creepy human-experimentation nightmare? Yeah, it's a strong nod to Shouwa Riders, with "Kamen Rider Black" being a great example. It doesn't take a genius to guess, that it's how he ended up becoming Kamen Rider Build. Introduced via the nightmares, was 'Bat-Man'.... I mean the bat-themed Faust leader Night Rogue. It seems this mysterious figure is pulling the strings behind these experimentations. - Speaking of experiments... Ryuuga Banjou (played by Eiji Akaso) is the recent in its long line of victim. This stupid 23 years old is easily my second favorite character so far. His actor have proven his ability to showcase emotions in "Kamen Rider Amazons S2" (I hated his character at first, but he evolved into a compelling audience-surrogate later on). So he's another strong talent for the protagonist side. He also shared that Shouwa Rider-esque backstory, which comfortably placed him on route to become the 2nd Rider, Kamen Rider Claws. But if, and only if, this show is indeed going through the Sangokuden path, will he end up becoming Sun Quan to Sentou's Liu Bei? Hmmmm.... that would be a heartbreaking twist, considering how heavily he's being shipped with Sentou right now. Then again, don't forget Shadowmoon... - If Ryuuga's second, who's my favorite character then? The answer is of course... Gentoku Himuro (played by Kensei Mikai). Contrary to my First Impression, he's not that ambiguous. He's a sleek-haired corporate-level douchebag, as evidenced by his sleazy move towards the lady journalist. He might look cool and tough, but at several occasions, he's acting like a spoiled brat! That's probably why I liked him even more! LOL. I admit, he's currently present to deliver exposition dump regarding the Pandora's Box. But he also had his own mystery, which means future potentials. Gentoku's one of the three bigwigs who experienced the Skywall disaster first hand. Yet in contrast to his words, he looked okay, and seemingly hasn't aged in 10 years. What's the deal with him then? What about those other two, the lady in white and middle-aged man? Are they the leaders of the two other areas now? Why is the buttons on his gray uniform is on the left, and not right side? If I do end up following this series, getting answers to those will probably be one of the few reasons. - There's more. These past few days, many have been connecting Gentoku with the supposed-antagonist Night Rogue. A nice theory, but a little too obvious one if you ask me. Unless of course, TOEI is going the exact same route to "Kamen Rider Ex-Aid". Which makes sense, since Gentoku shares MANY similarities to Kuroto Dan! Both are played by crowd-pleasing really-good-looking (I can't really argue that, can I... ;D) 30-something actors, both are corporate businessmen who somehow got involved with the protagonist, and they exuded a strong "I'm a villain" vibe from the very start of the show. Two of a kind! But that's also the reason why it's too obvious. I doubt TOEI is going to rehash the same twist so soon. - Personally, I'm currently suspecting his assistant Nariaki Utsumi (played by Yuki Ochi) to be the real face behind Night Rogue. Going back to my Sangokuden theory, there's a likelihood that Gentoku will serve as the show's Cao Cao. But remember, it wasn't Cao Cao who ended up becoming the bigger challenge to Liu Bei. It was Sima Yi, who was his right hand and also personal advisor. I hope you're getting my point here... - Misora Isurugi (played by Kaho Takada) is obviously the official sidekick for Sentou. I sincerely hope we'll see a development in her character soon, because for now, her listless attitude... is sucking the joy out of this series. Think of it, like grumpy Koyomi in "Kamen Rider Wizard". She made me abandoned that series! For some reason, Misora has the power to cleanse evil. That means she might end up becoming a key character later on. That's a story for another day though. She's just part of Sentou's glaring exposition dump now. - Freelance journalist Sawa Takigawa (played by Yukari Taki and Cafe Nascita owner Souichi Isurugi (played by Yasuyuki Maekawa) are also exposition tools! Their main contribution to the episode was to deliver explanations, such as: the unidentified life forms Smash, how Build could extract their Essence to turn them back into human, how Misora could purify the Essence to be used by Build later on, why Sentou ended up living in Nascita's hidden basement/bunker, Build's goals in this series, as well as about Ryuuga's criminal background. Sawa served as the first damsel-in-distress, while Souichi as... Spada, Spada, Spada (that use of Italian? duh...)... a comic relief support. He was NOT funny though. AT ALL. Generally annoying for my taste. - Aaah yes, the flat dry jokes just did NOT work. It's said that third time's the charm, but definitely not for this one. None of the humor made me laugh, not even once. Aside from being weak in materials and relies too much on slapstick, the comedic timing was also off. The optimist in me would say, "Better luck next episode", but the pessimist half is saying, "Cut the crap, and just focus on being serious!!!". - If there's one thing I easily enjoyed about this episode, it's the design and concept. I could be biased due to my love to "Kamen Rider W", but Build certainly emitted Double's flair of style. Likely due to Ryuta Tasaki being the director. The dual-elements is a such a neat concept, combining biological and technological, though it seems these will not be limited to those categories (we'll be getting elementals like Diamonds, Fire, and more). Yes, the whole Full Bottles gimmick is basically an excuse to promote toy collectibles/figures. But at least it allows a variety of combinations, or as the Build Driver say... "BEST MATCH". The fact that it's created using purified Smash's essence (Hedgehog is the example) is equally intriguing. That means every Smash serves a purpose to become a new power-base! What will happen if Build accidentally uses an evil one, then? Will he turn evil too? Hmmm... - Build's transformation scene feels very SCIENCEy with all those physics equations. All those metallurgy angle... I really dig that! Sadly, the finishing move "VOLTECH FINISH" is a complete opposite. It's meant to look cool, but for me it's cheesy because the use of Physics felt unnatural/forced. Really, I don't think it's possible for anyone to move that way. To sum up, the Science approach in this episode was a hit or miss for me. - Last but not least, the nicely choreographed action, helped elevate the episode's second half into something that was genuinely entertaining. The motorcycle chase against the Touto armed forces in particular, was a highlight. It's over the top, but exciting. Like many had said, it felt like a Kamen Rider show once again.

As far as first episode go, this was... okay to good. Not great, due to many reasons I've pointed out above. Unlike Kyuranger that instantly stole my attention and sped off with it, this one didn't accomplish as much. It's clearly handholding its audience with thorough explanations here and there, so the bulk of it was merely expositions. Just to be fair, it can't really be helped nor blamed, considering this IS only the first episode. I do however, hope things will 'build up' with more... 'natural' flow in the next one. That's probably when I can properly decide whether to pick this series up or not. So yeah, allow me to reiterate: this post does NOT mean I'll be following the series from now on. There are some nitpick-ish parts I still need to... 'shake off' first, but I do have some good enough reasons to give it a chance, at least until around the 5th-6th episode. Here's hoping the next ones will be able to convince me even more... Next Episode: Is Ryuuga a real killer? Time for a murder investigation...

Hello! How about a list of your top 5 lion-themed mecha? I would say it's the most used mecha design on the show, but I'm not sure if there's enough of them to do a top 10 :)

Lion mechs are cool, we can all pretty much agree on that.  Maybe not as cool as robot dinosaurs (very little is) but still very cool.  There’s just something about the King of Felines being translated to a huge, mechanical machine of destruction that resonates.  Heck, they made a whole show out of five of them uniting into something awesome so it’s about time I addressed the topic of Lion mecha!

So, without further ado, here are my top five lion-themed mecha!

5. Shishi Origami from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger

I love Shinkenger, it’s a great show.  It didn’t have the greatest mecha however, which is why poor Shishi Origami only ranks fifth on this list. He is kind of adorable in an awkward way with his silly way of walking and his strange proportions but he’s a valuable addition to the pantheon of regal cat-mechs.

4. Cube Lion from Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger

As silly as this one is, I still love it.  It’s cute in a very strange way and I just love the way it looks and moves when on screen.  I wish it had more individual screentime but it was always fun to watch.  The cube gimmick might not have worked for everyone, but it worked for me.

3. Gao Lion from Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger

The only reason Gao Lion is in the middle of this list is because of how it was portrayed on screen.  The early 2000s computer animation used by Toei was… questionable at best and poor Gao Lion suffered from it.  If it had always been portrayed by a mechanical puppet or a suit it would likely rank higher on the list.  They get an A for effort but effort can’t excuse a distinct lack of quality.  Even back when it was first on, I wished it had been a physical prop rather than CGI.  Still, very regal and I LOVE his roar!  GAOOOOOOOOO!

2. The Star Beat Ginga Leon from Seijyuu Sentai Gingaman

A Space Lion made of rock that spits fire and turns into a robot?  Oh heck yeah now we’re talking!  I loved the Star Beasts in concept from Gingaman.  They were more like partners to the heroes rather than just mecha.  Sure, they could shed their more organic (or mineral) exteriors to reveal shiny metal beneath but they were always a beat at heart.  I’d ride this guy into battle any day!

1. Land Lion from Choujuu Sentai Liveman

Sometimes the first is just the best and no other lion-themed mecha can top the original.  Land Lion is just a fantastic design.  It looks like a mechanical lion through and through without cutting any corners or making it look weird.  The proportions are right, the way it moved it amazing and the overall look is just the best.  Plus, it’s yellow and lions should be yellow.  Sorry to all the red lion mecha but it’s just true.  Lions are yellow!

There’s my quick and dirty top give Lion-themed mecha in the history of Super Sentai.  Hope you enjoyed it!

Additional Zyuohgers by Taiko554 I've been meaning to make these suckers for a few weeks/months.  I was gonna try and get them made a while ago, then put if off when the recolor Condor came out.  He's not at all how I would've wanted to make him, but because it was, I'm not making my own.  Anyway, their roll:   "Champion of the Abyss!  Zyuoh Octopus!" "Champion of the Desert!  Zyuoh Giraffe!" "Champion of the Tunnels!  Zyuoh Mole!" "Champion of the Mountains!  Zyuoh Bear!" "Champion of the Caverns!  Zyuoh Bat!" "Champion of the Grasslands!  Zyuoh Zebra!" "Champion of the Marshes!  Zyuoh Leopard!" "Champion of the Riverbeds!  Zyuoh Platypus!" "Champion of the Treetops!  Zyuoh Owl!" The idea for Zyuoh Octopus has been in my head since before the show ended.  He's basically a pirate-nanny.  All the cube weapons are made into children because that just makes sense.  And because Cube Octopus is gigantic, his ranger is gigantic.  And a pirate-nanny.  Because that's hilarious to me.  And his coloring and animal are reminiscent of Davey Jones from POTC.  His Wild Release is eight octopus arms to reign in all the rascally kids.  He would've been an Ocotpus-Man (pirate of course) in Zyuland, and is now in charge of training-up all the new kids in the merged world who have powers or somesuch.  Obviously the challenging bit was making all their animal heads on the chests.  The octopus was the toughest and most fun, just because I made it into the cloak (started as a bit of an apron) and shoulders.  His collar was a bit of a last minute thing, but it tied (ha) the whole cloak together.  Other than that, I like the bat head a lot too, even though it's tough to see.  The chubby boy being the bear is also funny to me.  I wanted to make the bear ranger a bit different because I have no desire to make a panda Zyuohger because I hate that it was a thing.  So Zyuoh Bear being the larger kid, like a big brother, made sense. Happy Wednesday Club Members! Right now the one and only Sharivan Spark and myself are teaming up against Foundation X. So grab your belt and “Henshin”.

1. What were you like growing up? What were some of the things you were into as a child/teenager? It was hard because a lot of people have forgotten about tokusatsu and what is Kamen Rider or sentai, Ultraman or even metal heroes. During the 80s and 90s were the boom of Tokusatsu here. I was fond of tokusatsu during the early years even through my childhood and teenage years heck, even the present time. Growing up? It was challenging I mean life is hard it has it’s ups and downs. Lots of people leaving and staying but you still have to keep it real and move forward. Not to mention during my childhood years I was a fan of super robots like Great Mazinger, Getter Robo, Grendizer to name a few.

2. Did those things influence who you’re today? To be honest yes. A lot of things from being the person that I am today.

3. You cosplay a lot of Tokusatsu characters. What made you decide to focus solely on them when it comes to the cosplays you made. To be honest I focus on their personality and their armor designs. Not to mention their sole purpose of heroism and justice. Take Kamen Rider Drive for example, his sense of justice and heroism aside from his awesome armor design made him my favorite from the show. I did cosplay 2 villains. 1 of them is Black Beet from Juukou B-Fighter. He was a sole villain with a purpose of fighting and defeating his arch-nemesis to prove himself to whom he is. I wanna focus on other cosplays actually I wanna try mecha as I mentioned early maybe 1 day I can try cosplaying Getter Robo or Great Mazinger etc to name a few. But for now, I wanna focus on tokusatsu cosplay as it is my forte. 4. What is your favorite suit you’ve made so far? To be honest I have top 10 armors here is my list so far. 5. What costumes do you plan on making this year? To be honest I really don’t know what plans I have but mostly gonna focus on armored sentai heroes. But I wanna focus on doing some other forms of Drive to be honest.

6. Off topic, favorite food? Grilled foods and some sushi. Grilled baby back ribs and some steak alongside vodka or “lambanog bubblegum flavor” I’m not sure what it is called on US terms,  though.

7. Any advice you can give someone starting out when it comes to making Toku suits?

It takes time effort and A LOT of tears and blood but if you ever wanna start on making one never ever forget to remember why you wanna do a toku suit of your favorite character. Let’s admit it Toku cosplaying is quite expensive since sometimes you gotta buy some foam, DX gadgets and many more materials. It might take some months or heck even years but trust me once you’ve finished it. The money, effort, blood, sweat and hardwork you have added in making your toku suit will be worth it. You can also try pepakura there are lots of tutorials on youtube and lots of free pepa files on google you can download.

8. Off topic, what do you think of this years Tokusatsu shows? I’ve been really enjoying Ex-Aid so far. I have yet to check out this year’s Sentai and Ultraman. I’ve really enjoyed Ex-Aid so far. I wasn’t sure about it 1st because I can’t judge a show just because of their wacky suit designs and TBH I really really wanna buy Ex-Aid’s gamer driver belt but I solely wanna collect more transformer toys this year and less tokusatsu toys haha. The previous sentai was Zyuohger. I wasn’t really fond of the whole animal cube motif but it grew on me as the show became great and even better than Ninninger. The new sentai is Kyuranger which is a space motif sentai with the most plenty of core members so far since it consists of 9 core rangers as opposed to 5. Kyu means 9 in Japanese so it figures. For Ultraman however, I really enjoyed the recent Ultraman Orb. It’s another anniversary series as his motif is using cards and using the powers of 2 past Ultraman. The show didn’t also rely much on special teams that have high-tech gadgets and vehicles so that’s why it’s unique to me. There’s an upcoming movie for Orb this march.

9. What conventions are you going to attend this year? Too many events to see but I might attend Ozine Fest for April. Toy-con and lots of major events here. Hopefully, my wallet can take it since I have lots of transformers to buy this year haha.

10. Do you plan on making costumes outside of Tokusatsu characters? I did before a comic book character named “Boy Bakal” or in English it means “Boy Steel” a Filipino comic book character inspired from Marvel’s Iron Man. I plan to make other non-tokusatsu characters to cosplay as I wanna move to mecha cosplaying soon.

11. What is a convention you’ve dreamed of attending? It already happened back then Toku Spirits. Four Toku actors from our childhood returned to take a visit. Even if the event did not require tokusatsu cosplayers the whole premise and feel of the event was just glorious!

12. Final question, anything you want to say to your fans? Never give up on what you wanna do, accomplish and achieve! Hard times might take on your from all sides but if you keep your head high and know to stand up again after countless mistakes, bloopers and misunderstandings. It’s never too late to rise up again!

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger Adaptation

In my adaptation it would be called Power Rangers Royal Beasts .

On a cubed shaped planet called Cubeton were everything is shaped like a cube are animal humanoids called the Doubutsus live in harmony. But one day an alien group called The Invaders comes to their planet to destroy it for the Cubeasts for his collection of rare items but in his way are the five Royalty protecting the Cubeasts. Each of the Royalties have their own Cubeasts according to their species. With the power of their Cubeasts they become Power Rangers Royal Beasts. But on their rampage to destroy Cubeton they destroy the original red rangers. Before they can take the Cubeasts the rangers scattered them through space and they all land on earth in different places. So the Invaders leave to go and find them. The Rangers now have to got to earth and find the Cubeasts and a new leader before it to late.

The Rangers- Jonathan McClaine/ The new red ranger, ruler of the sky, he works for a local zoo he loves and cares for animals, a very calm person tries to see the good in people

Marina/ the blue ranger,ruler of the seas, she is the mother of the group she loves to take care of people she wants to prove herself as a good fighter

Leopardon/ the yellow ranger, ruler of the savanna, he is the goof ball of the team very loud and is the perfect gentleman treats women as queen with gets on Marina nerves, loves to fight

Tusken/ the green ranger,ruler of the forest, he is the brains and strength of the team hates to uses his strength would rather uses his brains but when he fights he goes all out has a crush on Tigeress

Tigeris/ the white ranger, ruler of the ice lands, she is the little sister of the team hates to get babyed love nature and loves food and to shop and is very good friends with Tusken

Ace Parker/ the tri-Cubeast hunter ruler of the safari, woods, and swamps he is the best friend of Jonathan but goes missing because the Invaders captured him to create their on rangers but instead of giving him one animal they fused him with three doubutsus and when they fused them his mind went crazy so the Invaders mind control him to fight the rangers

Washi/ the orange ranger, ruler of the air, he was the original red ranger when he got destroyed he came back as a sprit to help the rangers he is very strict

Doubutus/ when any doubutus come to earth their bodies adapt and turn into humans

Ok. Sorry for the delay. It's been a wild week. I don't think I'll have the brackets assembled for tomorrow, but I think next Wednesday (2/28) will be the start of the Loser's Bracket, where there will be 2 matches each day. The matchups will be accordingly:

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 30

I miss the Gokaigers already. But we have to go forward. It’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 30! Here we GO!

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, the Gokaigers were really cool, weren’t they?

-PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Yamato is reminiscing over his time with space pirates. And also is ready with the others to try and call Cube Whale to them the way they call the other Cube Animals.

-So, a rack of the cannon and a pull of the trigger! OCEAN! Cube Whale, to their side! …Nothing happened. Where is the whale? There is no whale. This is not, working, at all. So shit.

-Back in the cabin, they’re left trying to figure out a plan…Could Cube Whale be stuck in hiding, like Cube Bat and some of the others? It’s a whale, so it would be in the ocean…Oh, great, they only have to search across two thirds of your waterlogged-ass planet. This is going to be a complete and utter mess, isn’t it.

-And then cue Mario in a whale outfit. Mario, what happened to the robot bird. What did you do to the robot bird. But also, why the whale? And it seems there was this huge water spout off of the coast! People are calling it a record-breaking whale. …It could be Cube Whale.

-While Bunglay rips the same information out of a news crew…And up in the Big Bow, it seems Kubar has gone missing, and Azald is displeased. Who’s he going to get hammered with if there’s no Kubar?! But Genis thinks there’s about to be something far more fun than liquor happening very soon…

-Opening!

-Episode 30! The Legendary Mega-Beast

-So the gang’s soon out to the area around where the spout was seen…So who’s gonna get looking? Sela’s down. Yamato’s going to try and use Whale’s power to help. And Misao, being a fisherman, is of course going…to…

-…Get into a scuba suit. Misao, this seems like a bad plan…But now his pride as a fisherman is all fired up…

-Oh and that’s when Bunglay arrives. Which makes it even worse. Instincts Awakened! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Champion of the snowy drifts, ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the forest, ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the savannah, ZYUOH LION! Champion of the surging waves, ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the soaring sky, ZYUOH EAGLE! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-All Beasts Unleashed! The World goes right out with his WORLD THE CRASH….And promptly gets kicked into the dirt, as Bunglay leaps past him to fight the core five! But The World, driven by pride twice over, raises back up and throws out a vicious slash…That mostly just hits his comrades. Good job, jackass.

-So Eagle decides to kick it up. Instincts AWAKENED! WHALE! The Champion of Champions steps forth…And the sea responds, a massive spout of water from the water! Bunglay’s prey is here…

-And Shark throws aside her sword to get immediately into the water, swiftly followed by Bunglay and Whale!

-The World gets out his rod, intending to get Bunglay out of there….Aaaand he just ends up with a Shark instead. And she is very angry, as The World finally calms down enough to be guilty…

-As down in the water, Bunglay and Whale cash…Only to both be swept out of the water by Cube Whale, and flung back onto land!

-Whale hits the ground so hard that his suit fails…Or perhaps the power has chosen to reject him. Either way, he saw it….He saw Cube Whale.

-And Bunglay also slowly recovers on the other side of the coastline, seeing a huge opportunity in this strong of prey…But he’s found by Kubar.

-Back with the crew, they’ve got to figure out how to rally him…Sela has the idea of going down there with Cube Shark, and Misao wants to join her in Cube Crocodile to make up for what happened…

-Which leaves the remaining four to deal with the strong vibes of Bunglay. He’s still close by, and has to be dealt with…As, down in the water, everything goes black…And then red. They’ve been found…And ensnared in poison from Bunglay’s ship! He’s pouring a thick, agonizing toxin into the sea…! But, how…Who could be in there…?

-Kubar. Even with what Bunglay knows about him…Or perhaps because of what he knows…

-A flashback, as we see the end of their last fight. And the implications are made fact. Kubar’s homeward was lost, because of Genis. And so Bunglay made him an offer, to take Genis down when the time was right…If he’d just help Bunglay snare his target first.

-Back in the Now, and as you can imagine, Yamato is furious that Bunglay would put such damage into the ecosystem. GORILLA! Instincts Awakened! The four of them charge forth…

-As, deep underwater, The World is the first to manage to push through the pain, letting raw fury guide him into firing a shot right into the ship! And Shark manages to knock Kubar into the air, forcing him into a retreat…But The World’s passed out from the pain! Fuuuuck.

-While up topside, Bunglay grabs a few MotWs out of Elephant’s head, including a giant one! Great. Just…Just great. Gorilla, you’re on ground duty, they’ve got mecha scale! And so the fight is on, as Lion, Elephant and Tiger march forth with Gorilla’s help…Animal Combination! FOUR! THREE! FIVE! SIX! ZYUOH WILD! Zyuoh Wild Special! It’s an extra tall, extra tough Zyuoh Wild able to fight at the extra-large mecha scale…

-As Gorilla needs more options. WHALE! Instincts AWAKENED! Champion of champions, ZYUOH WHALE! Draped in his longboat, the fight is on, and now he can hold his own despite being outnumbered two to one…

-As, back in the ocean, Cube Whale struggles in the toxin…And Sela manages to drag Misao to the sand before she passes out herself…They’re in a bad spot….

-As at mecha scale, Lion calls up Cube Bear, which transforms to CUBE PANDA! With a golden axe, they can punch above their weight class!

-While down on the ground, Whale charges up a ZYUOH FINAL shot…Gripping tight…The shot arcs up and boomerangs down, burning his foes to ash, while the mecha team put down a Wild Rocket Knuckle! The fight is won….

-As they see the toxins vanish from the water…As taken in, by force, by Cube Whale. Letting his powerful filters clean them from the sea, and pour out fresh, clean water…It’s amazing.

-And Bunglay sees his chance, peppering Cube Whale with fire from his waist cannon! Whale grabs him up, trying to stop him…But that’s when a fleet comes in from above, a whole Dethgalien force! Cube Whale swiftly goes underwater, and Bunglay finds himself as fired upon as the Zyuohgers, forced to fight them…

-While Cube Whale starts to use his sheer bulk to tear into them. But Naria arrives, here to take Cube Whale for Genis!

-And Kubar gets back into the Big Bow, just in time to see what Genis is doing…Naria sees her chance ground side, and pops a tracker onto Cube Whale…

-Even as it rises into the air, starting to fire furious torpedoes into the ships that would threaten it…And into the other Cube Animals?! It’s raging, furious, and trusts no one, as it takes Zyuoh Wild Special out in one tailswing…Naria fucking bails, leaving Whale and Bunglay to get enveloped in fire…

-While Genis calls up another of his old toys…As the wounded crew manage to find Sela and Misao…And as Whale stirs, only to see the great beast that empowers him flying away, having left this beach turned into rubble…

-Credits! Croc-out like a crocodile! Let’s let’s dance!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Final Episode

Let’s finish the fight.

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, the crew rejected the idea of isolation, choosing to fight for a brighter tomorrow! And now, that fight has come to them…

-As PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Genis is more amused than anything else, ready to play this game out to the end…His bloodlust, his desire for destruction, is near overwhelming…

-And with his usage of Cube Whale’s data, he can draw from the Earth. This planet, is under his ownership, Zyuohgers…

-They make a charge, a furious war cry burning forth, as the final battle begins!

-Final Episode: Earth is our Home

-And the fight is on, but Genis is too damn fast and strong, able to outplay and overpower them…Gorilla’s strength, Tiger’s speed, none of it is enough, and then they’re swept up into darkness!

-Into a pocket dimension, as created by Genis. A space where he controls the rules. As Eagle tries to figure out a plan…And he realizes something, as he looks in deep…This pocket space is made up of mook coins! And Genis, seeing what they’ve figured out, bombards them…

-The pocket space collapses, their armors fail…And Naria, barely alive, staggers her way up to the battlefield.

-While Genis, Genis is furious…Because Yamato figured it out. Genis is nothing but a collective mass of mooks! A bundling of fury and hate! And Naria sees his shape collapse momentarily, when the hatred becomes too much…

-As Misao puts it all together. Genis hates himself. The bravado, the attempting to be above it all, the Blood Game…Fuck, why he picked Misao to turn into The World, over any other human on the board! It was because Misao hated himself in turn, and Genis knew how to use that!

-The others rally around Misao…You are nothing like him. You care so deeply for others. You seek nothing but others’ happiness. You are a good man, Misao, and there’s nothing of Genis in you, no matter what that piece of shit claims to have seen.

-Naria leaps in, choosing to stand with him to the end, her loyalty overwhelming…And Genis…

-Genis shoots right through her as the others transform, shattering their transformation and destroying their Symbols in their moment of vulnerability. He had a chance to be different, to turn away from his path…And he cast it aside. He killed the one person in the entire fucking universe who could actually care for him…He fires upon the wounded crew, trying to kill them utterly, to take them off the board…

-But they endure! This fight’s not over! Their lives aren’t over! You had a chance to back down, Genis…You had a chance to become more than you were. But now? Now, they’re going to take you down. For their planet. For their friends. For the people they love! For everything awaiting them!

-They charge forth, without even their armors…But they begin to glow, as the Earth itself responds, pouring its raw energy into their Symbols, into Misao’s Light…! The Earth has chosen. The planet itself has decided, that you are its champions!

-And thus, Instincts Awakened! Champion of the soaring sky…ZYUOH EAGLE! Champion of the surging waves…ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah…ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest… ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts…ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-Their planet, is under protection! Beast UNLEASHED! By the strength of their will, these six enter the fray, and it’s a totally different game now…Genis is powerful, sure, but the Earth itself has rejected his presence, and they have too much will to be stopped! Even when he manages to push them back, they rally, unique, as the Earth’s power comes aglow…

-And Eagle manages to do as The World does. All, Beasts, UNLEASHED! His muscles swell, wings spread from his back, and the Whale Cannon straps itself on! The power is overwhelming, terrifying, as he takes to the sky, forcing Genis to face him in the air!

-This planet is his home! These people are his precious friends! And this power, is the gift given to him to protect them! He’s able to blast Genis into the ground, shred his wings, and rally the whole team for a hyper-charged, prismatic ZYUOH FINAL shot! No coursing up and down, no splitting, just a single straight beam right into Genis’s fucking chest…

-Shattering his memory unit full of Cube Whale’s data, and blowing him through! His connection to the Earth is destroyed, and the whole crew just about collapses…

-But then he gets big. And they’ve got to call in backup. Complete Animal Combination! ALL TOGETHER! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING! The fight is on, against a reduced but embiggened Genis…Without his connection, he’s back in his life support chair, running on fumes…Against the strength of so much.

-Zyuman power, the raw life force that fuels their strength. Human will, that can bind and forge connections across impossible gaps. The planet’s will and strength at their back! Their Zyuoh Cubes, these ancient totems of power that have chosen them! And their own connection, their refusal to abandon each other! You don’t face one, Genis. You don’t even face six. You face everything!

-ZYUOH DODEKA SHOT! Their blast knocks Genis back, opens him up, as they pour it all in…ZYUOH, DODEKA, GRAND FINAL FINISH! It is an orb of energy that fires forth, the planet itself in micro, the strength and hopes of all that has ever been born on this planet, of every sunset and every love, of all that still shall ever be…And it all tears him apart to nothing.

-It’s over. It’s over so quickly…And that leaves them with what’s a much harder job. They protected their homes…Now they need to change them.

-Everyone’s fucking exhausted by the time they return to the Link Cube…And this is goodbye, for a short while. They need to return. They need to explain. And they need to bring about change on their end. But make no mistake, Yamato and Misao…This is not the end.

-But Misao is still close to tears, and Yamato admits, with more candidness than he is used to, that he’s going to miss them…They’re more than friends. They’re family. And he’s going to be thinking of them, until the very moment they reunite.

-Then comes their time…All the Symbols, and the Grand Champion Symbol, are locked into the Link Cube, as it glows bright…Its damage is healed by all that energy…And then? It starts to spin wildly and rise into the air…!

-Its energy courses through the planet…As cuboid towers start to emerge in the cities! From the cabin, to the hospital, to the middle of the city, zyumen find themselves amongst humans?!

-The Link Cube…Something happened. When they reforged the Link Cube, with everything…It reset the Link Cube back to zero. It undid the initial severing.

-The Link Cube vanishes, as the Symbols come back down to these Champions…And now…Now they’re left with a lot of questions, and so much uncertainty. …But one thing is certain. This new world will need their help. To help guide people through coexistence. To stand by them through difficult times. And if a threat comes upon them once again? To fight.

-Of course, they have so much to see and to do…Each has to reunite with their families. Sela finds her brother and parents by the water. Leo finds his whole pack taking up residence in a park. Amu returns to her mother, who’s started a little restaurant…And Tusk finds his father, and needs to talk.

-As things slowly settle, Misao and Larri find themselves becoming ambassadors and educators, and Misao, Misao finally finds peace, as he’s helping craft a world that the three whose lives were thrust into him would be proud of…

-Mario ends up making friends with the three who appeared in his cabin. And Bard spends a brief time with Yamato’s father, as both have made decisions to see what’s important…Bard wants to see this world, wants to travel and see its beauty. And Yamato’s father…He’s realized he needs to connect with his son, and do what he should have done so long ago. Both are a little gentler, a little kinder, and a lot wiser, than they were when they met last…

-And as for Yamato himself, well…He keeps doing what he’s been doing. Trying to live by the creed his mother taught him. That all things are connected, and all deserve a hand outstretched in aid.

-Credits!

-Aand the handoff.

Okay, we gotta talk that ending. Because that was fucking great. Zyuohger, like a lot of Super Sentai shows, had its problems with spinning its wheels in the middle…But that right there, that made it all worth it.

I would have liked to see more of Genis’s whole Deal, maybe by revealing it more explicitly sooner, if only to the audience. It’s such an interesting angle, that it’s a shame that we don’t get any more time to examine his actions in light of it.

But man, that whole ending, the sheer hope it contains with how we can forge new connections, and those connections can make us better than we were…There is so much to take in there, and it is a delight.

Like, I had a whole thing I was gonna talk about with the critiques of the show, but that…Damn, that just knocked so much of what I had to say out of the park.

But, okay. Let’s get into it. Right out the gate, I gotta say, the character beats and storytelling were this season’s absolute strength. It nailed the “out of suit” stuff better than a lot of Super Sentai. Even within the limits of being a comedy-action show for young children, they were able to bring a lot of depth, and a lot of real weight to the characters.

So where’s the weak point?

The “in the suit” stuff. Ultimately, it’s not even that a lot of the fights were bad…It’s that they were the same thing I’ve seen before. And sure, yeah, I’m well outside of the target demo, but a typical kid’s going to see at least a few seasons of this damn show before they age out of it.

The mecha fights, especially, were rough and really felt like contractual obligations more than anything the creators really wanted to do interesting stuff with. Particularly because, I mean, you have this whole idea that everything starts with the Cube forms, which inherently can be put in any order. I know that wouldn’t work as well for play, but it’s a serious shame that we saw so little of the idea.

And, to the same token, the on-foot fights were…I mean, they weren’t bad, but they had too few elements to work with. Four members of the team only have a gun, a sword, and their Beast Unleashed power…And two of them effectively have the same power!

While I can see the argument that, from a narrative perspective, you want to show humanity as being uniquely able to hold zyuman power from more than one form, hold multiple lives within them…I feel like if the others had gotten secondary forms like Yamato, it would have done so much to improve the show.

The best Super Sentai fights, generally, come from the choreographers being able to do crazy things and change the circumstances. I think it’s telling that some of the best fights in the series history came out of ToQger and Gokaiger, and it was almost entirely because of how often they could flip the rules of the fight.

So, yeah. If it were me and I were retooling this series from top to bottom, I think the one big thing I’d do is introduce a new set of forms for the four. Something from the smaller Cube Animals, perhaps, like armor that could strap on, or some way for a zyuman to grant some small fraction of their power as a ‘blessing’ to the Symbols (as opposed to the large scale transfers to save Yamato’s life and build Misao into a human weapon). And then like I said, reveal Genis’s deal sooner, at least to the audience, so we can watch him front and struggle and know that’s what we’re seeing.

But overall? That was damn good.

So what’s next? …Real talk, I need some light fluff right now, so I think we’re diving into a comedy. Come back and see that next time, with a new episode ONE! Wait for it!
