I am once again blown away by Mother Nature. I just spent a few minutes looking for insects among the leaves on this hand before realizing that they are ALL insects. Scientists suggest the insects began to mimic the appearance of leaves, flowers, and twigs thanks to random genetic mutations and it has allowed them to hide away in vegetation to escape predators for millions of years.

Quiet nights are always a blessing and a curse, Orchid muses to herself as she flips through a few maps, studying the local terrain and notes left by her patrol leaders. She's not planning on getting much rest tonight. As much as Maple would like to grumble about her workload, she's not above taking watch in the late hours of the night. How can she ask such a task of her subordinates if she isn't willing to do the work herself? Shouldering her weapons belt, she steps out of her tent and nods to her comrades who await her outside. The majority she recognizes, though one particular member leaves her a bit baffled.

"Maple? What are you-"

Her brother grins wide, looking like the cat that got the cream. "I got thrown out of the healers tent for insubordination. So... it looks like I'm stuck with your patrol crew as the healer."

He sounds much too pleased to be punished, but Orchid would be lying if she didn't feel a bit grateful to have her brother nearby. So, she merely grunts an approval and brushes by the green flame elemental before leading the squad to their designated route.

The hours pass slowly on patrol, though she stays about attentive as one can with mild sleep deprivation. Maple eyes her suspiciously, but seems to be cheery enough. There's not a lot of privacy for an argument, after all. It's good to know that her insistence on formality is being adhered to, even if her brother is a bit lax with the execution.

Suddenly, Maple gestures for the squad to halt. He jerks his chin in the direction of the forest, and Orchid strains to listen. Rustling branches. Something is approaching the clearing, and approaching quickly. She nods to her brother, and stalks towards to the brush to get a closer look. The squad assumes a defensive formation, and she holds her breath in preparation to shout orders.

My absolute favorite insects on animal crossing new horizons are the orchid mantis and the walking leaf. I love when it rains because that means I get to catch these cute little snails! Also caught a honeybee the other day. I love spring on acnh!

Orchid

She is... strange. I suppose I should not be surprised that all humans are not loathsome, but to see it firsthand makes me... deeply uncomfortable. Are there more humans we have not seen who wish to ally with us? Were they hunted by their own kind?

I only find humans more loathsome if so. The one thing you can count on a monster for is to find loyalty. Though... admittedly, some yokai did hunt their own back home. Agh. I wish to ponder it no longer.

Maple

This woman is in desperate need for medical attention, human or not. Sure, she could try to stab me, but I'm sure she's much more inclined to pass out rather than wield a dagger. It'll be a pain and a half to convince the head healer to let this slide, but... ugh, I'll think of something.
