Sometimes I enjoy the thought of Graves being a big flirt because it amuses him to see the reactions to it (He flirts with Rudy because it annoys Alejandro. Rudy jokingly flirts back because he knows Graves doesn't mean anything by it. He also loves when Ale gets clingy after because the sex is fantastic), but when someone actually flirts back his brain just screeches to a halt because he has no idea how to respond when someone is actually interested in him.
Price's Man
Graves centric, NikGraves, PriceNik
___
A lot of people would consider Graves to be a flirt. He always had some pick up line in his back pocket, ready to spring it on some randomly selected individual on 141 base. Graves normally avoided flirting with certain people, such as Ghost.
He didn't feel like getting stabbed over playful, harmless flirting.
Graves would also flirt with people that he knew would flirt back in the same joking manner. Such as Rodolfo Parra. Graves originally started flirting with him to piss off Alejandro, and he was delighted to discover that Rudy also wanted to piss him off.  After several months of this, Graves felt like he had a weird bond with Rudy that was built on with harmless flirting and making Alejandro's face red with rage.
"Hey, cactus blossom. Still in bloom I see~"
Rudy snorts as Graves slides into the chair next to him. Rudy was nursing a cup of coffee while scrolling on his phone. Graves has noticed Rudy doesn't eat in the mess hall in the morning like everyone else and normally only comes in to get some coffee. Unlike Graves who grabs breakfast with everyone else.
"Alejandro is in a foul mood this morning, muñeco. Might wanna tone it down today."
"Oh? Still feeling it from last week?"
It wasn't a mystery what Alejandro did to keep Rudy's eyes on him. It was a big reason why Rudy continued to go along with Graves flirting.
"More like from last night."
"Don't remember seeing you yesterday."
"I might have mentioned you last night and it sent Ale into a... frenzy."
Graves laughs, "God, keep that up and he's going to have an interesting reaction hearing my name!"
Rudy snorts while sipping his coffee, lowering his mug to cover his mouth. Graves grins and takes a bite of french toast, noticing a man walk into the mess. He didn't recognize him and by this point Graves pretty much knew all the faces in 141.
"Who's that?"
Rudy looks over his shoulder, "Him? Nikolai, leader of Chimera. He's with 141 but flies out to deal with his own people."
Graves' eyes widened and stared, "Oh, boss man, huh?"
"As much as I love when you torment everyone with your flirtations, I recommend not trying with him. He's Price's man."
That did nothing to deter Graves. Price was one of Graves' favorites to fuck with, even if the man never had much of a reaction. Flirting with his partner sounds like nothing but a good time. Rudy notices Graves taking a swig of his orange juice, groaning when he sees the man stand.
"Phil, don't-"
"Just going to introduce myself!"
Rudy groans again, louder this time but Graves doesn't pay him any mind. Graves struts over to Nikolai, the man making two cups of coffee, one no doubt being for Price. For some reason Graves was very excited to 'introduce himself'. The man puts a lid on the travel cups and turns, surprised to see Graves.
"Ah, hello."
"Hey, handsome. Don't recall ever seeing you around here."
Nikolai's brows lift in surprise, "I also don't recall seeing you here before, either..."
"Ah, how rude of me. Must've forgotten my manners when I saw you across the room. Phillip Graves, CEO of Shadow Company."
Nikolai looks him up and down, a small smile on his lips. Graves took this as permission to keep going.
"You look like you like sweets."
"Oh?"
"You have a sweet face, have to be fueling it with something. Or is it natural?"
Graves loved trying to be as cringey as possible when flirting, all to get the best reactions out of people. But Nikolai wasn't looking annoyed by his flirting and actually looked very amused. The man set the cups of coffee down and smirks, Graves feeling his heart flutter at the sight.
"Not sweet myself, I have sweet enough company," Graves blinks as Nikolai leans forward, "I prefer them sweet. They need to taste good."
Graves' mind went blank, unable to say anything as Nikolai picked up the coffee cups and walked past him.
"Be seeing you around, Phillip."
Graves turns and watches Nikolai leave, unable to say anything. Graves stumbles back to where Rudy was sitting, dropping back into his seat and staring at his breakfast. He finally looks up and Rudy is staring at him with wide eyes full of disbelief. Neither said anything for a moment, both stunned by the experience. Finally, Graves’ clears his throat and picks up a strip of bacon.
“So, uh… What’s your plans for today?”
“We are not about to ignore what just happened.”
“Really? I am. I was going to head to the gun range and get some rounds in.”
“Phil-”
“Maybe head to the auto shop. Heard one of the Challengers got fucked up and no one can figure out what’s wrong with it.”
“Phil!”
Graves shoves french toast into his mouth and Rudy scoffs. He takes his time chewing, all to avoid talking about what just happened. That did not sound like joking.
“Can you at least swallow instead of sitting there with your mouth full? You look like a chipmunk!”
Graves swallows, taking a moment to breathe before he looks up, “Is it too early to start drinking?”
Rudy blinks, “Yes it is. It’s 0800.”
“Five o’clock somewhere in the world.”
Graves stands and starts to leave, ignoring Rudy calling after him. As he walked through the halls, he couldn't stop thinking about Nikolai and his very genuine flirting.
Fuck, Price is going to kill me.

I made buff spiky plant lady
However I have not made either honey based Cookie, whether it be the honey doctor Choco boyfriend or the honey also buff lady in construction. But ah well
To be honest, I wasn’t planning on having her be a cactus, and she looked different in my head initially, but @ur-typical-nerd suggested Prickly Pear and it went with the color scheme, not to mention it made the spiked ball easier to draw and helped with the spiky theme
I think in my head she was originally a forest lady, I think my brain was thinking about someone talking about making our own updates bc Devsis won’t give us what we want, I was thinking of a forest theme and she came mind. I suppose now she’s a desert lady though
I had planned for her to be shirtless outside of something at the top (and in my head I think I was thinking of something sort of similar to what @rexitto’s Tabasco wears at the top only with the bottom part of that open), which I made that jacket, but to be honest I had no clue what to do for her bottom half, I just kind of made something a put a belt to separate them
Also I’m gonna be honest, I don’t think I’m good at drawing the buff Cookie tops. Yeah I have at least three sketches of fankids that are unfinished and not very far in because I have trouble with the posing of their hands in accordance with their bodies. In general I’m not very good at body diversity with my Cookies. I try sometimes to make them look intentionally a bit wide or skinny, but by the end they don’t look that different (or I edit something in the sketch because it looks off that diminishes that difference)
I admit that Prickly Pear doesn’t look anything like what I normally draw, particularly with her greenish skin, colored eye lines, and her body type. But I did quite like drawing her, even if realistically I probably won’t ever use her again
Oh yeah, personality. To be honest I don’t have much, other than she tends to be scary looking and is definitely tough, but she’s a chill person that’ll help someone in need. But also don’t cross her, she’s very powerful, if you couldn’t get that just from her looks. Probably drinks a lot of cactus juice

The Kiwi director bringing live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender to life
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is arguably one of the biggest productions of the year. The project, which has a budget of US$120 million, has captured imaginations worldwide since its debut last month. Today, Netflix confirmed the series will be renewed for two more seasons.
One of the visionaries behind the new show is Asian-New Zealand creative Roseanne Liang. Serving as co-executive producer and director of episodes five and six, Liang knows the responsibility she carries in taking a beloved story from script to screen.
"It is a huge weight to bear," she says.
"We wanted to provide the best thing in the spirit of why we love the original Avatarand that's all we can really operate through. Have faith, trust our instincts that our hearts are pure, our minds are true and we're doing the best we can."
It all started in 2021, when Liang's agent called her about the show. Netflix was looking specifically for pan-Asian directors and her name was on the list.
"I knew about the show because all my friends had been saying 'you need to watch it' at various points. I was like, 'oh it's a Nickelodeon animation' and they're like, 'no, you don't understand. It is life, it's got one of the best dramatic arcs ever, you've got to watch this show' ... I watched the hell out of the three seasons and became a convert. Everything everyone told me was true."
Liang says there were huge challenges in adapting a 20-episode, half-hour animated series into eight hours of epic live-action television.
"The world is so rich, there's bending, there's all this flora and fauna and animals, it's this pan-Asian, indigenous world that is taking from cultures that seem familiar to us but are different and new. The challenge of that world-building was vast.
"It's also hard to get the tone into your head - you can do silly things like sucking frogs and cactus juice in the animation - because it's animation - but I don't know if you can have the tonal whiplash in a live-action like that.
"We'd always have to find that line. The dramatic can't be too dramatic, we've gotta undercut it with probably a quip or something, but the funny can't be too slapstick cause people will be like, what is this."
Liang says casting for the project also came with a bit of pressure. Season one follows a 12-year-old Aang, 14-year-old Katara and 15-year-old Sokka, and finding young actors capable of undertaking the roles was "scary".
"They're all teenagers. I think Dallas (Zuko) is a bit older but still young, just in his early 20s. It's all about casting the right actor - and person. Because the person needs to be able to deal with the pressure of what they're about to go through.
"The children had an incredible support network though. Dallas Liu and Ian Ousley (Sokka), they were best mates, they chose to room together in Vancouver where we shot and they were each other's support buddies. I just love their bromance, it's a beautiful thing when cast members look after each other like that."
The Netflix adaptation attracted some scrutiny after the creators of the original series - Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino - stepped away from the project citing creative differences after being involved for two years. Liang says their departure was "a source of pain and dismay".
"We cared so deeply about the source material ... at the same time, we know what we're doing it for. Some things won't live up to people's understanding, we're never going to be able to completely mimic or mirror the animation, but some things - I've gotta hand it to the writing team - some things they made even better."
A plot tweak in episode six, directed by Liang, follows Zuko's journey in a way that strengthens what the character stands for - Liang argues, better than the animation itself. While episode four features the addition of one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking flashbacks of the series, the funeral of Iroh's son Lu Ten.
"The Leaves from the Vine storyline about how much Iroh grapples with his part in the war and the cost of who he was in the army, the writers were like, we think we can add this moment in here to really cement the relationship between Zuko and Iroh.
"Zuko did an immense kindness to Uncle Iroh by sitting with him in mourning and it is a gift that Iroh repays. That relationship is one of the most rewarding, beautiful, fun, funny relationships of the whole series."
As a Chinese-New Zealander, Liang says it was a huge honour to be involved in a project that highlights the richness of a pan-Asian, indigenous world.
"It was the ethos of the entire production team that we do something new in this sphere that won't draw the silly, polarised calls of "wokeness" because it makes complete sense in this beautiful world that Bryan and Michael created in the original series. It was always diverse and that was their vision.
"All we had to do was serve that vision and it was just the most natural thing in the world."
While she hadn't worked on a project of this scale before, Liang could draw on rich experience from her involvement in local productions such as Creamerie (with RNZ's own Perlina Lau), Banana in a Nutshell and My Wedding and Other Secrets. She hopes her success inspires other New Zealand creatives to aim for the stars.
"Just because we come from a small country or are part of a diasporic community, that's no barrier to working at this level ... whether it's your ethnicity or your upbringing, don't let it limit you because you can get there."
In fact, Liang's "New Zealand-ness" was a strength on set. Wearing an 'Aroha Mai, Aroha Atu' shirt, she explained that the Māori phrase means 'love received, love returned' - an understanding that helped connect with the First Nations indigenous crew that worked on the show.
"The ethos that we have in New Zealand, the multi-cultural understanding of people and relating to each other, it helps - so much of my job is feeling people's energy and giving my own energy back to them and growing up in New Zealand where these - usually indigenous - ideas of how to serve people and act with love has served me so well.
"It's really been nothing but an asset to my entire process."

Welp, you probly saw this one coming. And I'm gonna be the one to ask it. Have you seen the live action AtLA, and if so, what did you think and/or how did you feel?
I have watched it!
Spoilers ahead, so I'll put it under a cut.
Hmmmm. Well, I didn't hate it, the way I hated the live action movie. The producers clearly cared a great deal about the source material, which was a nice change. I do feel like the series was done with love for the source material, which was not what happened with the movie. (Shyamalan himself admitted he'd never even seen ATLA - neither before nor after he directed the film. Unacceptable.)
I think, however, that there were two issues with the Netflix version that made it so it couldn't possibly match up to the animated series.
Due to time and budget constraints, they could only show the plotlines that moved the main story forward and thus missed out on so much of the deep dive into the characters and worldbuilding that the original series is known for, and;
The show is unclear about who the series is actually for.
The first point is one that streaming services like Netflix and the rest are especially guilty of perpetrating all the time, not just with Avatar, for sure. While I appreciate the time and budget constraints, the reality is that all of those "filler" episodes in ATLA gave us a greater understanding of these children, their world, and their relationships with each other. It's important that we understand that Aang is a LITTLE BOY - in his mind, in the beginning, he's only been the Avatar for a day. He isn't even his teens yet! Having him want to sled on otter penguins and ride elephant koi establishes for us that he's just a 12 year old kid who has zero idea what being the Avatar means, because he's not had the time to learn what it is to be the Avatar. (It's established in the original that the Avatar isn't told who they are until they are 18 or so - the decision to tell Aang so young has to do with war, and not tradition. It's also very telling that the Avatar after Aang can already bend 3 out of the 4 elements when still a fucking toddler.) Having him understand the gravitas of being the Avatar straight out the gate - not even a day has gone by for him, despite 100 years going by for everyone else - takes him right the fuck out of he's just a child figuring it out territory and into he's a Messianic Figure territory in the space of 30 minutes. Which you know. Makes it into a different show entirely.
Sokka and Katara, despite their trauma, are still kids. They don't know how to handle their shit yet. (Which is why, in the original, Sokka tries to be the adult of the group, but in reality he's a 15 year old kid who's had too much responsibility heaped onto his head and he is aching to just be a regular teen in a way he's never been allowed to be. And do dumb shit. Like drink cactus juice. Or go shopping for matching bags.) The showrunners have explained that they didn't think Sokka's misogynistic arc was necessary but uh. It is. Sokka has no idea what it means to be a man, because he's had no good example. He has to learn that as he goes - and by the time he gets to the North Pole, where misogyny is actively practiced, he has matured enough to understand why it's wrong, even during war. Sokka, as a character, learns more than all the rest of the Gaang put together. Sure, he's not a bender and no, he hasn't got Zuko's redemption arc, but Sokka is their leader. He has to learn how to actually lead the rest of them without being a douche about it, and that growth - which he does on his own - gives us the Sokka who has become a respected leader at the end of the series, despite his age. He grows into that, despite his mistakes. He learns. And he never gives up his humor, his sarcasm, and his personality to do it. We know, in the original, that Sokka has been damaged by this war. It's painfully clear. But that's because the original shows us, and it does that through all of the "filler" episodes. It does not tell us. The Netflix version tells us, and then tells us some more, making him humorless and dour. Oof. Why the hell would either Suki or Yue be interested in this dude? The original Sokka was funny, despite his missteps. He was humble in trying to make amends. He was vulnerable. This kid? Yeah, whatever. No shade on Ian Ousley. He's not being directed well, and the writing has failed him.
And Katara. Well. Let's just say that I would believe that this Katara would be happy to grow up into nothing but a wife and mother, content to raise the Avatar's babies and sit passively by in her old age, refusing to get involved in the civil war brewing in the South Pole, not expecting a statue the way the rest of them got. The only time we see her with a bit of a spark is when she challenges Pakku, but even at that there's no passion, no anger. Where's our passionate Katara, the match for Zuko's rage? She's the last surviving Southern Water Tribe waterbender, and original Katara is constantly aware of that in a way that Aang, the last surviving Airbender, isn't for quite some time. That juxtaposition of the two of them and their awareness of who they are - in the entire world! - shows us the difference between a girl who was raised in and suffered great losses due to war and a boy who was raised in peace and prosperity. The Netflix version doesn't even TELL us this, short of a flashback of her mother being fried. OG Katara is driven to learn waterbending because she knows that her very people - her very culture - depends upon her learning it, and despite her patience with Aang and her natural gift for teaching, she never forgets it. And again, no shade on Kiawentiio, who I think is actually a fine actress. She's just not being allowed to do what she needs to do by the writing/directing, and that's not on her.
The same goes for Gordon Cormier, who is fine as Aang. But I wish like hell they'd actually let him play Aang, instead of whoever this kid in the remake is. Because I bet if they had let him, he would have nailed that wonderful, playful and yes, deeply afraid little boy who does depend on his friends, but not just because the script makes him tell us, again and again and again. (We get it, Albert Kim. You don't have to keep telling us, in so many words, that Aang needs his friends. Please. For the love of Kyoshi, stop telling us.)
But really, this is one example of what condensing 20 episodes into 8 does for us. We're told Aang needs his friends, instead of watching it unfold naturally as time goes on. Only hitting the bare basic of plot points means that it's the plot that concisely drives the live action show, and not the characters. It really changes the show, and not in a way that I personally enjoyed.
Now to be clear, I was fine with some of the changes they made to the original story. I was okay with both Katara and Sokka being taken into the spirit world, etc. I wasn't expecting a remake beat by beat, and honestly, wouldn't want that. You hope to see something new in a remake, or what's the point? But boy, did I miss the filler bits. Which, in a show as well done as the original, were vital to the show itself.
Plenty of people have bitched about the CGI with regards to all the fantasy animals but it's no worse than any of the endless CGI we're subjected to nowadays. I just expected it to be as crappy as any of the rest - looking at you, Marvel movies - and it was. At this point I keep my expectations at zero with CGI. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, but in this particular case it did the bare minimum of what it needed to do, even if it meant that Appa had zero personality. (See only focusing on plot instead of characters, above.) I don't really know what else to say about that.
The costumes were adequate. That being said, Sokka and Katara's perfect clothing was a joke. I mean, you keep TELLING us that the war has devastated the Southern Water Tribe but these kids are wearing brand new, well-fitted, unstained clothing? Come on. They'd be wearing hand-me-downs, worn with use, repaired with whatever their tiny, isolated village had at hand. It's appropriate to have certain characters wearing well-made clothing - the Fire Nationals, to name one. (Bumi's outrageous hat was glorious, and perfectly on point.) But these peasants we see, the Earth Kingdom ones who are downtrodden, often starving? Why are their clothes so nice? I'm not talking about their clothes not being fancy. I mean, where's the wear and tear? Why aren't the costumes more ill-fitting or on the ragged side? Even Jet looked pretty spiffy, scruffy hair notwithstanding. It was something that nagged at me the entire time I was watching.
Although props to whomever is doing hair and makeup, because Kiawentiio's messily braided hair and her clear, bare skin are perfect. (That applies to all the teenage girls, none of whom were made up. Not counting the Kyoshi makeup, of course. That's what happens when you cast a 14 year old to play a 14 year old, instead of a 30 year old with a pound of makeup on her face, trying to make her pass for younger.) Not to mention I really appreciated Gyatso's faded, creased airbender tattoos. That was a great touch, right there. Tattoos fade and darken!
The settings were well done, true. I really enjoyed that part of it. The Southern Air Temple, was so beautiful, and Omashu! I know it's all CGI, but they did a good job with that part of it. The set pieces clearly had a lot of care put into them, even if some of them were fairly basic. No bitching from me on that point, although that's usually something Netflix in general manages.
All that being said!
There is one area where Netflix's version does really well, which is more insight and focus into the adults. Ken Leung's Zhao is flat out amazing in the live action - we see far more of him and his machinations, and it's so good. And holy shit, Daniel Dae Kim's Ozai! Watching him pit his children against each other in such a malicious, determined way takes him away from the distantly crazy Ozai that hates Zuko and loves Azula of the animated series to a complex and deliberately evil fascist in the live action and I was living for it. I truly was. They are not wasting either Kim or Leung here, and good on them. I want more of Ozai if they get another season!
I also very much like Dallas Liu's Zuko here. (Although come on, showrunners, do the scar right.) They've done more to flesh Zuko out - he's not quite the firebrand of the animated Zuko, but he's more tormented, and I see it as a solid acting choice on Liu's part. It would be really easy to make Zuko one note, but that's not happening, at all. Liu's making Zuko his, and as far as I am concerned he's doing it right. And god, don't even get me started on Paul Sun-Hyung Lee's Uncle Iroh. I knew he was going to knock it out of the park as soon as I saw he was cast and he has not disappointed. That scene where Zuko sits next to him during Lu Ten's funeral (and the soundtrack started playing Little Soldier Boy and how very fucking dare they) and Lee lets one slow tear track down his face while sweet young Zuko helps him keep vigil made me have all kinds of feelings. The way Lee, throughout the season, looks at Liu with such love and tenderness, all for this boy that everyone else sees as a piece of shit is so GOOD, ya'll. So good. Lee and Liu have palpably good chemistry together, and the showrunners are taking advantage of that, for sure. I mean, we know that Uncle Iroh is part of the White Lotus, and the entire show he has to balance letting Aang do his thing as the Avatar while at the same time keeping his clearly beloved nephew from falling into total despair and Lee nails it. I do hope, if the series continues, that we get to see a little more of Iroh's playful side - it humanizes him and also humanizes Zuko. (The moment where Jun tells Zuko she'll hunt down the Avatar because his Dad's cute and Zuko's face of teenage disgust made me laugh right out loud. More of that, please!) Lee and Liu's scenes were standouts for me.
But all of this brings me to my second point, which is who is the intended audience for this show?
The original was for kids, for sure. Absolutely. Bryke, for all their faults, were able to to work war and its devastation into the story while still keeping it firmly G-rated. The show's focus on the actual kids in the show, rather than the adults, meant that kids could relate to it in ways that have traveled with them into adulthood. There is an entire generation of people for whom this show was and is a lasting legacy and influence. It was like Star Wars for my generation. It was HUGE. And still is.
That being said, the Netflix show is not G-rated at all. People are being immolated in front of us. Many, many times. And while I appreciate that it gives us a visceral awareness of how terrible this war really is, it's certainly not for children! I mean, I would not have let my six year old twins - the age they were when we watched the original - watch the live action! Not on your life!
So who is the intended audience? The now adults who grew up with the show who are going to be extraordinarily hard to please? Adults who might have actually not have grown up with it for whatever reason and are watching the show without any preconceived expectations? Those of us who were parents, who raised our kids on it, who knew as adults how truly fucking outstanding the original was and who are going to be critical of the remake?
It surely cannot be for kids, or at least not younger ones. Even Netflix acknowledges this.
Because the thing is, there is only so much interest adults are going to have about the story of a 12 year old messiah and his little friends. Or at least that seems to be what Netflix thinks. So they've "Netflixed it" - they've made it darker, grittier, more violent, less playful. And because of that, they've taken the core trio of Aang, Katara and Sokka and have tried to make them grow up - made them humorless, more self-aware, more openly traumatized, more serious. And in doing so, they've really done these characters a huge disservice.
In fact, what I honestly think would have been better would have been to have made a live action feature that focused on the ADULTS. Made the Gaang peripheral to the plot - we see them when we see them, but they aren't the focus of the show. That would have been an interesting choice that I would have been all over, especially seeing the really good stuff with the remake that's set with the adults. Iroh, Ozai, Zhao, Gyatso, the Machinist, Bumi, Pakku and even the new character of Yukari, Suki's mother - all of them are excellent, and drawn into focus the way only Iroh was in the original show. If the focus had been on retelling the story through adult eyes, when we did see the Gaang, showing them as being just kids like they were in the original - immature, playful, etc. - would have worked instead of trying to mold the kids into mini-adults to keep them in line with the remake as it's clearly been envisioned. Actually, the more I think about it the more I think that would have been a fucking amazing remake, and if I am honest? I am really pissed they didn't do it.
But how it's been envisioned at this point - a show clearly for adults, which still focuses on a bunch of kids - is not really successful. It's a shame. I found myself really enjoying the adults in the show, and not enjoying the Gaang at all. Which surely was not the intent.
And on a completely personal note, seeing Kuruk with blue eyes made me miss like hell all of the different eye colors in the canon universe. I am very pro casting Asian and Indigenous actors in roles - it's how it should be done, end stop, no whitewashing, please - but at the same time, this is a fantasy world, not Asia, despite its acknowledged Asian influences. (Sometimes I do think people forget that.) I wish we'd seen the eye colors. Especially relevant when it comes to The Legend of Korra, where we see Republic City, and its melting pot, where waterbenders like Tahno can have fair skin and gray eyes due to mixed heritage, and brothers can have different bending and eye colors like Mako and Bolin. I miss Zuko's amber eyes, and Sokka and Katara's blue eyes. And Aang's soulful gray eyes, for sure. I get it that it might have been hard to expect the kids, at least, to wear contacts. But yeah. Not a dealbreaker for me, but I never stopped thinking about it while I was watching, so. Certainly something I actively missed, and not just for the aesthetic, either. It really does help us as viewers to understand by showing us how, in this particular time, that people from the different countries are keeping to themselves, especially when it comes to fraternizing (ahem). In other words, it wasn't done in the original just for cutesy anime references. There was an underlying reason for it. And the fact that the remake showrunners don't seem to either get it or find it important is very, very telling.

Donatello had never felt closer to being in grave danger as he was at this very second.
Here he was, seated at the bar of a yokai party, sipping on a juice, while his fool brothers were getting themselves caught and thrown out at every turn.
All who was left to grab the Leopard Pendant was him and him alone. Leo was busted when he snagged the wrong necklace. Raphael accidentally knocked drinks onto a powerful Nekomata. Michelangelo had been his best bet while he was working some extra recon, until he was caught checking out the rooms nearby to find any fast exists in case of an emergency egress being needed.
All that was left was him. And, in all honesty, he would've called it quits, turned in, and then worked out another attempt for another time. After wringing his brothers' necks and throwing them in the back of any passing garbage trucks.
But there were 2 issues with that. The first being this was a once a year event for this powerful yokai family. One with a long line of battle nexus champions. Big Mama had her eyes set on the pendant as well, and where she had 364 other days to get her claws on it, they had One.
The other was that the current holder of the pendant was sat next to him. A massive panther yokai, with sleek black fur and paws with deadly claws and teeth that could rip him into turtle bits. Yes, you were seated next to him.
And you had JUST started talking to him.
His earpiece was practically blowing up with his brothers, all watching the hidden camera feeds (originally Leo's new task once he was booted) and having a front-row seat to the turtle-buffet he was about to become. You weren't even looking at him, staring at your drink as you said...something...to him.
His brothers were going to fast track him to trouble with all their shouting at him.
"I-I'm sorry, excuse me. The music, I...what did you say?"
A wry grin made your whiskers twitch. "I asked, if you were having a nice time at the party."
He could smell the drink on your breath. Dragonfruit, starfruit, cactus fruit, pomegranate juice.
<"Say Yes." Leo hissed.>
"Ah! Yes I am. Sorry, these aren't normally my...thing, you see."
"Mh, I understand." Your voice rippled in rich rumbles, reminding him somewhat of a purr. "I normally don't do parties myself. They aren't FUN to me. But, you know parents."
His dad would be the last to do a yearly showoff of something like his family history or whatever the reason this party was thrown for. "Oh yeah, no. Absolutly. My dad does one to celebrate....his...movies."
That made you smile, and snicker slyly into your paw.
He was so scared, he felt his heart squeeze at that.
<"That's good Don! Keep em laughing!" Raph cheered. "They close their eyes when they laugh.">
So you did, it seems.
"Did uh, you see the idiot who got kicked out earlier?"
<"HEY">
"Which one?" you hummed, still not looking at him. "The moron who gave my grandfather a martini bath or the one who got caught trying to sneak into an armory?"
<"That was an armory?">
"Oh wow! Busy night for dum dums, eh?"
You snickered at that, and...despite how big you were, and frighteningly powerful, Donatello felt his confidence swelling at that.
...You had a cute laugh. And smile, despite how sharp it was.
Clearing his throat, he looked over more, leaning against a propped up hand. "Othello von Ryan," he hummed, offering a three-fingered hand for you to shake. The music faded into a new song, and neons lit up the room in swaths of deep purples and reds and pinks. He looked good in purple lighting.
[Aquí, gatito~]
All that confidence popped as soon as you turned and faced him fully, opening your eyes and locking with his own. He barely registered you taking his hand in your own, and the smokey rumble of your name coated his brain like thick honey, sticking itself everywhere. You said something, but he couldn't for the life of him figure out what. The music swirled around you both, and he found himself caught. Trapped.
Galileo and NASA didn't know SHIT. The stars were in your fur as the spots (Spots!! You were no panther, you were a black jaguar!!) caught neons in their depths and swirled with the glittering sheen, shimmering like oil slick. The occasional bright sparkle made him think of meteors flashing across your coat. And if your fur was the stars...
You had quasars in your eyes. Glowing in the dark, and capturing his mind, his tongue, and his heart.
Whatever mystic spell you cursed Donatello with was powerful, and it scared him more while also enthralled him to you.
[Come on and hit me with them Night Eyes~]
<"SAY YES ALREADY!!" Screamed Mikey.>
"Y-yes?"
You seemed pleased with that, and- oh. Oh he was being led away. Away from the bar, and into the throngs of people. Oh your paws were on his shoulders, claws so close to his throat-
And you were dancing.
It took a few seconds for the soft-shelled turtle to gather himself, but when he did, he gave an easy grin as you lead him into the fray, swaying with him as the two of you danced.
Bootyyyshaker9000 quickly found his groove.
[The night is young you've only just begun. You're fancy, and you look so fine~]
He shimmied next to you, hips swaying as the two of you slipped into something chaotic and beautiful and oh so intimate. It made him feel magnetized to you. Your eyes refracted neon lights like starbursts and it drove him crazy.
[Crawling through the streets to your own silky beat, the spirit of a wild feline~]
<"NOW! YOU HAVE A CLEAR SHOT, GRA-">
Your voice overruled anything his brothers shouted, flooding his ears and brain in lush tones that make the terrapin want to melt as you purred the lyrics to him, asked him about himself, complimented his suit, his voice... Instead, he grabbed you, and despite how powerful you were compared to him, began leading you, shimmying and stepping rhythmicly to the beat. A samba? No, calypso, he thinks is what this is called-
Your claws scratched oh so delicately beneath his chin. He swallowed nervously. You looked like a cat that cornered a mouse, toying with it, something to break and-
Your paw cupped the side of his face, and you pressed your own face against the other side. A flirt. A tease.
[Dangerously pretty like a big bad kitty, Causing trouble wherever you roam~]
"You're sweet and vicious," Donatello echoed, eyes wide. Was this all a game? "Infectiously delicious."
"I think I wanna take you home~"
He swallowed nervously at your reply. Taking a deep breath, he steeled his nerves. You wanted to play? He could play.
<"Don grab it and go, hurry up-">
He tapped the earpiece subtly, turning it off. You were grabbed as he began to lead YOU, weaving his strides through the crowd as he spun you. He felt your ink coloured tail swipe teasingly past his hips, and you looked oh so pleased as he engaged. The two of you began to make galaxies on the dancefloor as your steps were dripping in skill.
"You're walking slick fantastica," You sang as the two of you chased one another like shooting stars in the night, "You got the street reaction, yeah. You always take us by surprise. Moving like a panther, do you wanna dance?"
"Yeah." He answered unthinkingly.
"You're gonna get me with those night eyes~"
Fine.
"You're coat is black galactica, hypnotically spectacular," He trilled in response, flooding you with praise,"You're like a devil in disguise. Moving like a panther, do you wanna dance?"
"Yeah!"
He cupped your face, staring deep into the supernovas as he locked eyes while pulling you into a long, laviscious dip, fingers trailing your sleek fur. "You're gonna get me with those Night Eyes," He purred.
When you were lifted, you stepped back, smirking as you beconed him to follow. You walked backwards, and he found himself unable to help stalking after you.
[Un trance salvaje, Un trance salvaje, Un-]
You had lead him backwards through the milkyway and into a hallway, where he found himself pinned to the wall with his hands above his head, your mouth near his throat.
Oh, Einstein, his knees were going to give out.
[Haunt me, hunt me, thrill me, kill me. Fill me with desire. Hypnotize me with them eyes, please-]
"You know, Othello von Ryan, you are AWFULLY smooth." You rumbled, teeth grazing his jawline. The purple-suited ninja thought fleetingly of his hidden weapons but...not yet. No. You hadn't hurt him YET.
He'd see what you would do.
[Baby, take me higher~]
Swallowing nervously, he shuddered a bit in your grip. "O-oh? You think so?"
"Mhm~ I don't think I've ever met someone like you. No one's danced with me like that before, certainly. Or ever, really. I'm usually...too scary for them."
Archimedes give him strength...
"Mmh, you're ah, a bit intimidating-but!!" You nipped him! "But, I just found myself utterly entranced by your ethereal eyes~"
The purr you rewarded him with was everything he could ever hope for in his life, and it would never be too soon for him to hear it vibrate through his body like that again.
"My eyes? That's so sweet..~ Listen, I know what this all is. I'm no moron, and I know who you are."
"Ah! Oh, okay, um. Cards all put on the table kind of kitty, huh? Ahaha, um-"
"But here's a little family secret: We are no fans of Big Mama." The way you hissed hissed her name made images of moldten planet cores and fiery solar flares creep into his mind. "She has paid off the elders of my family so that the rest pf us may be thrust into her barbarian fight pit as entertainment. We have many champions, yes, but I've been to more funerals than I can count. The list for eligibles is getting smaller."
The mutant gasped as your mouth traced hauntingly along his throat. A threat. A promise.
A cry for help.
"Big Mama is coming soon. You need to get back to your brothers."
It was a blur escaping the party, slinking out before he was caught by someone with little qualms about crushing him to bits. He met up with his brothers, shaken up as they sped away in the turtle tank. A two fingered hand brushed against where his thundering heart was, luminescent gaze still burning in his brain. He could feel his heart beat, an indication of his life as his brothers bombarded him with questions and demands and-
...what in the..?
Frowning, he dipped his hand hinto his breast pocket and pulled out a long silvery chain, the Leopard Pendant secured on the end. Raphael, Leonardo, and Mikey all cheered-
As well as a note. A phone number, but all his brain focused on was the message.
'dance with me again. - Night Eyes'

Okay AtLA/Tokka fans, help me decide which WIP/idea to focus on because I have way too many. If any of these tickle your fancy, let me know!
WIP #1: Cactus Juice! Young adult Toph and Sokka (who is newly single) go on vacation with the rest of the gang. Shenanigans ensue [tone: fun, lighthearted, buckets of innuendo]
WIP #2: Canon divergent AU sequel to my fic 'As Long As You Need Me', in which Toph chooses Sokka and happiness. This fic would be set years in the future and be told from the perspective of Suyin, the second youngest of five [tone: probably mostly lighthearted but with some bittersweet moments]
WIP #3: When Toph finds herself pregnant [with Lin], she worries about what might happen if her child is blind and not an earthbender. Sokka makes it his mission to help her with this and they fall madly in love [tone: romaaaantic]
Idea #1: 'Kiss me like it's the first time' -- A series of moments over the years, starting with older versions of Toph and Sokka with each scene going deeper into the past [tone: probably lighthearted but could contain some angst]
Idea #2: Strictly canon-compliant story where Toph and Sokka get together in their late 30s but can't figure their shit out. Just another Suyin origin story [tone: extreeeeme angst]
Idea #3: I saw a list of prompts a while back and I had an idea to smoosh them all into a single fic. Something something injury/coma; I haven't really fleshed this one out XD [tone: probably mixed]
Idea #4: Before Toph decides to join the gaang during the war, a mysterious blue box appears in her garden... [tone: action and adventure!] [obv not Tokka XD]
Other misc ideas: 'Ruins of the Empire' fix-it fic, full novelization of AtLA (yeah, I know that one's batshit insane), AtLA except different regions speak unique languages (I saw this on a tumble post actually; would love to do something with it)

For @starblue2406
Here are a few things I'll eat in a day. I typically don't eat a big breakfast, but I will have a big lunch. Dinners in my family are late, usually 6pm to 8pm, we typically walk after dinner, then I'll drink tea to relax before bed.
You'll probably notice a lack of beef and pork, I have trouble digesting them, so it's mostly chicken and seafood. My family also don't eat a lot of bread, it's treated more like a side than a meal.
And yeah, there's a quite a mix of cultures here. My mom's side is Greek/Egypt with Turkish influences from her great grandfather, my dad is Native American with some adopted local New Mexico flavors. Since I was originally born and raised by the ocean, seafood and sea vegetables are a big thing in my diet. They're hard to find in the southwest, but I crave them and they keep me healthy as I have low blood pressure, so I need a bit of healthy salt.
----------------
Things I'll have for breakfast:

Mori is a gravedigger by trade. He's not the most tactful or outgoing but then again, his job is digging holes, not talking. He tries not to think about life too hard and takes it as it comes, and as it goes.

Note
1. I have no clue how Zuko would react to seeing a six year old version of his sister but I’m guessing there would be a lot of laughing and Katara having to hold Azula back from burning him. Do you think Zuko would stay with the group or do his side thing with Iroh?
2. (Coming from recently rereading the fic) Does Azula’s original line of “a baby could never be as important as a king” come back around?
3. Sokka swears he saw Azula playing with the sand when they went to the desert, but she claims he was just hallucinating from the cactus juice.
Oh there definitely will be laughing involved on Zuko's end. But he won't join them immediately. He has his own journey to go on first before he's ready for that.
Yes, Azula's original line from the first chapter does indeed come back! I hope you'll look forward to when it does😁.
The amount of cuteness, omg😭. Another one of Azula's childish moments coming to light.

My Top Posts in 2022:

1/2) Regarding the bingqiu-bingjiu thing on twitter today, I don't know how to put this but such discussions seem to prompt a downplaying of sy's worth re the svsss world. I'm not saying that was the op's intention and indeed you and many other commenters had brought up such interesting points, but I saw takes from certain character stans as well that rubbed me the wrong way- bingqiu (or any ship with sy) won't happen without sj, sy has no separate identity of his own from sj. ..
2/2) ...he is just seen as an extension of sj by other characters, he is just a privileged young man who got handed sj's hard earned life and is kind only cuz he didn't go through shit like sj... Maybe it's just my sy|sqq bias speaking but such discourse bothers me fsr..

sorry I put off answering this! It's been a busy week, etc. etc. anyway
Yeah, I know what you mean. Like.
Listen. I'm obviously a very outspoken SY fan, and I will readily admit that I can't be unbiased when forming opinions about him. He's my favourite character and I utterly adore him, so seeing people ignore him or outright drag him down to elevate SJ annoys me a lot. but. I'll try to break down exactly what bothers me about people saying SY "got handed SJ's hard-earned life and is kind only because he didn't go through the same hardships"
Firstly, Shen Yuan was literally ripped away from his family and the only life he'd ever known!! Just because he plays it cool and tries to make the most of his situation doesn't mean he's happy about dying! Most transmigration or isekai stories (the ones that I've read, at least) explicitly have the MC either come from a life where they didn't have much in the way of family or close attachments, so the loss of their original life isn't as big of a deal, OR their feelings about losing their old life is a source of tension in the story that gets brought up and focused on.
In Shen Yuan's case, he explicitly comes from a nice family who was very close. SY himself might have been unambitious and felt like he was wasting his life, and sure, we'll never know the exact nuances of his relationships with each of his family members, but there's nothing to suggest he didn't love them. His sister in particular he's described as having doted on.
And yet, they're almost never mentioned again. SQQ finds out he's died and just goes "Well, I've been granted a second chance here, I might as well make the most of it" and just...goes on. This straight up never gets explicitly addressed in canon, and it's not because he doesn't care. It's because he can't. He doesn't have anyone with whom he can talk about this loss. He died and was thrown straight into a world that was constantly reminding him that if he didn't satisfy the System, it would KILL him, and if he DID satisfy the System, there was a very good chance he would get horrifically mutilated by the person he was rapidly growing to care for more and more each day. I've talked about this a bit more on twitter here if anyone is interested.
I probably sound like a broken record at this point but I have to keep saying it: SHEN YUAN SPENT SIX YEARS (excluding the 5 he wasn't conscious for) WITH THE CONSTANT THREAT OF EITHER DEATH OR MUTILATION HANGING OVER HIS HEAD. And that IS a traumatising event. So was losing his old life and not getting a chance to process or mourn it. So was being forced to push Binghe into the Abyss (yes, it was traumatising for SQQ specifically, as well as Binghe!!). So was being forced to send Binghe to fight Elder Sky Hammer and all the million other tiny things that he would never have had to do if he'd had complete control over the new life he'd been given.
Like, look at his treatment of Binghe when he comes out of the Abyss. He's terrified. He's spent so much time afraid of Bingge, afraid of what his return will mean for him, that he can't even bring himself to look at the real man who is before him and see the very real differences he has made. He can't afford to, because he's been living with his fear for so long and he knows that one wrong move could be the end of him.
That time Meng Mo puts him into a deep dream where he experiences Shen Jiu's fate, SQQ is so shaken that he can't even look at Binghe afterwards! Compare that with later, after the punishment program, when he literally HAS experienced the fate that he's been threatened with for years, but instead when he gets out all he wants is to see his own Binghe again to make himself feel better, because he desperately wants to forget the image of the man he loves taking pleasure in torturing him. God. FUCK. I CANNOT be normal about this.
Shen Yuan was a VICTIM. That's what it comes down to. Saying he was privileged and was only kind because he never had to suffer like Shen Jiu did is SUCH a bad faith take. Did Shen Jiu have it worse? I mean...sure, yeah. Certainly, he was traumatised during his formative years when the trauma it would have a bigger impact in shaping his personality. But do we really have to do the "oppression olympics" speech in a novel aimed at adults?
And like. Okay. "He got handed SJ's hard earned life". Let's unpack that, because it's not like "Shen Yuan didn't ask for Shen Jiu's life" and "Shen Yuan benefitted from Shen Jiu's death" are statements that can't coexist. Shen Yuan didn't just get pulled into PIDW because he badmouthed the author, he got pulled in because he died and if he hadn't transmigrated he would have simply stayed dead. Even if you ignore all the trauma he faced in his new life, and all the legwork he himself had to do to get the happy ending he eventually gets with Binghe, I can hardly deny that he was better off in the long run than if he hadn't been given SJ's life.
But here's the thing. Shen Yuan wasn't really "given" SJ's hard-earned life. He wasn't given that life at all. If Shen Yuan had woken up in Shen Jiu's body with no System and complete free-reign over his new life, I would agree with this sentiment, but he wasn't. He was being used by the System with no regard to his own wellbeing.
Seriously, ALL the bad things that SY does as SQQ are the result of the System, either by having his hand directly forced on fear of death, or because he's under extreme pressure and in a position he would never have been in if he'd been in control from the beginning. If Shen Yuan had simply transmigrated into SQQ with total free will, he would have lived a happy, peaceful life of spoiling his disciples rotten and that would have been that. Maybe something would have come up later with regards to Binghe's heritage, maybe there would have been some other conflict from TLJ or the OPM, but the main thing is that SQQ would would have never betrayed Binghe and therefore wouldn't do any of the things he did in canon to push him away out of fear. However their lives would have ended up, I think most of us can agree that they would have only faced a fraction of the trauma they did in canon, if any.
That's why it's impossible to compare SY and SJ on equal footing. It's true that some of the things SJ did (killing LQG and making a move on NYY) were misunderstandings, but ultimately, SJ abused Binghe because he chose to. All of his actions were done of his own volition. Nobody forced him to pour tea on an innocent boy who'd just lost his mother and was desperate to please him. Nobody forced him to make a 15 year old fight a demon. Nobody forced him to give Binghe a fake cultivation manual that would have led a normal person to a dangerous qi deviation. Nobody forced him to push Binghe into the Endless Abyss.
The reason it's unfair to say SY "stole" SJ's life is because we've seen the life that SY stole. We already know* how it would have ended. It's not open to interpretation. PIDW explicitly ends with Bingge taking everything from SJ; his home, the life he'd built, his freedom, his childhood friend, and finally his limbs. The world was broken, with countless people dead or otherwise hurt who weren't so in the SV timeline. If SY's presence was what prevented all of that, then...I'm sorry, but I do think SY deserved that life more.
*One person in the comments of the above twitter threads did make an interesting point that SQQ wasn't the only variable that changed in SVSSS compared to PIDW, and that SQH's warning to be careful when saving LQG might have led to a different outcome for SQQ even if SY hadn't transmigrated. I think this is worth bringing up, and I'd honestly love to know exactly how PIDW would have played out if LQG had still been alive, but ultimately, even if SJ had succeeded in saving LQG, I'm just not convinced his ending would have been that different. I think SJ would have been too proud to admit he was the one who saved him and LQG would never have known. They wouldn't have become friends like LQG and SY did, and LBH's personal resolve for vengeance (the main driver in SJ's eventual fate) would not have been affected by this change.
Anyway yeah TL;DR SY's presence improved almost every aspect of the PIDW world for the better (RIP Qin Wanrong, Gongyi Xiao and Zhuzhi-Lang) despite the fact that he never asked to be there and had a force far more powerful than himself trying its damnedest to make him hurt someone he cared about. Sometimes he failed to find the best possible solution to the problems he was faced with, but he still tried his best to work around the limitations placed on him and in the end, I would say he did a pretty good job of it! Maybe even a Better job than the man who was in the exact same position as him but WITHOUT an omnipotent being monitoring his every move and threatening to kill him if he didn't Try To Kill A Child?? who can say for sure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And to be fair, I think a lot of Shen Jiu fans would agree with this? Like I don't think it's really a debate that Shen Yuan is an objectively better person than Shen Jiu, it's just that some fans find Shen Jiu a more interesting character to read and write about, which is not my own experience but to each their own! I might prefer SY but I still agree that SJ is a compelling character and I can for sure see why he's a popular character to blorbofy. It only annoys me when people try to drag SY down to his level, or downplay the fact that Shen Jiu is still very much a child abuser who showed absolutely no remorse when asked if he thought his abuse might have been the reason Binghe grew up to be a tyrant.
Thanks for the questions and sorry about the length!! I just hear a question about SQQ and my brain goes brrrr

Hi! I LOVE your SVSSS meta, it's always so well thought out<3 At the very bottom of your BingQiu meta post you mention that LBH is gay. I had interpreted his sexuality in SV as like, he could be attracted to anyone (evidenced by his huge harem in PIDW) but after falling for SQQ, he wasn't interested in anyone else. What leads you to believe that LBH is gay and not bi or pan? (I don't have a strong opinion either way, I'm just interested in hearing your take if you feel like talking about it!)
the post anon is referring to
Oh man I've had this one stewing in my brain for days. I DEFINITELY feel like talking about it.
So here's my obligatory disclaimer that media should be enjoyable first and foremost, and if someone reading this enjoys seeing Binghe as bi or pan, I think you should continue to do so regardless of whether or not it's supported by canon.
To be honest, while I don't read either Luo Binghe or Shen Qingqiu as mspec, I'd probably have an easier time believing it of Binghe than SQQ. SQQ's feelings and attitudes toward women come across very much like your pretty stock-standard compulsory heterosexuality; he talks a lot about how he's straight and wants a girlfriend, but try to name one single woman he's actually attracted to and you come up short. In practice, he's constantly making excuses why any given woman who crosses his mind isn't suitable for him: usually it's "they belong to the protagonist" or maybe "she's too intimidating", and he never seems to realise that these things...don't actually preclude him from finding them attractive.
To Shen Qingqiu, simply not being attracted to a woman is very easy and he genuinely doesn't realise that that isn't normal for straight guys. It's why he finds it so confusing why so many people like PIDW despite all the terrible sex scenes. Even when Madam Meiyin (a woman whose predictions he's just described as infallible) is describing his literal destined partner, he tries to picture a woman who fits that description and immediately dismisses the prediction out of hand because she's unrealistic and would obviously go to Binghe anyway.
I think it's really telling that his favourite female lead in PIDW was Liu Mingyan—the only one who never got sex scenes with the character he was actually attracted to. Like. Seriously. His favourite wife was the one he never had to read having straight sex with Binghe. The lack of sex scenes gave her room to breathe and grow as her own character; Shen Yuan talks about how he thinks she should get "pushed down" but I'm willing to bet that if that had actually happened and she'd ended up in the same ridiculous sex scenarios as the other wives, his fondness for her as a character would have mysteriously dried up.
I don't think I have a specific moment I can refer to for this, but you also just...get the impression that even though Binghe is obviously the person SQQ finds most attractive, he's still capable of finding other guys hot. With Liu Qingge in particular Shen Qingqiu spends a hilarious amount of time fixating on what a Pretty Boy(TM) he is compared to how the PIDW fandom liked to portray him. Tianlang-Jun, Gongyi Xiao...even Shang Qinghua he describes as "handsome with an air of sleaziness" in his first appearance. I'm not saying SQQ wants to bone each of these guys, but it does make you kind of feel like a man's general attractiveness is something he takes note of. He does also describe female characters as pretty, so there's an element of it that's just...the POV character relaying the other characters' appearances to the audience, but with the female characters he's usually describing them as they appeared in PIDW, and I sincerely doubt PIDW ever took much time to establish that any given male character was nice to look at.
Anyway. I'm digressing.
As for Binghe...
God, even when I'm trying to talk about Binghe I'm talking about Shen Qingqiu, aren't I??😔
The problem with Binghe, I think, is that he fixates so heavily on Shen Qingqiu to the point of obsession. Like, sure, it's hard to imagine Binghe (as we know him in SVSSS) being attracted to a woman, but it's equally hard to imagine him being attracted to a man that isn't Shen Qingqiu. He just has such singular focus on the person he's fallen for that you might just as well label him "shizunsexual" as anything else.
So if you heard that he married a man in one timeline and a bunch of women in another, and took this information in isolation, you probably could conclude that Binghe is a bi/pan dude who just got really invested in one specific person to an extent that it permanently blinded him to anyone else he might have otherwise shown an interest in, and that this one specific person just happened to be a man.
However, I do think it was MXTX's intention for Binghe to be specifically read as gay, and not just because she's a BL author with a fondness for making her romantic leads only ever have feelings for one single person (and by extension, one gender) in their lives. The Bing-ge extra just doesn't make sense to me if Bing-ge was genuinely attracted to women. And the story overall, I think, makes more sense when that's not the case as well.
Firstly, I want to emphasise that Airplane didn't originally plan for Binghe to be gay. This is a common misconception that I think stems from his teasing remarks to SQQ in the last chapter. In truth, his original plan was for Binghe to not have a love interest. Binghe was supposed to be a tragic protagonist destined to die alone and unloved. Airplane might have added all the wives in for fanservice, and it's obvious that he thinks he's been writing a straight character since he seems genuinely shocked and even upset(??) when he finds out Binghe is gay in real life, but...at the story's core, Binghe having a loving, positive relationship with someone who meets his emotional needs was not part of the plan at any point.
I want to pull up a quote that I think is incredibly telling. This is how Shen Qingqiu describes the scene in PIDW in which Binghe loses his virginity:
The girl thought, "Since I'm about to die, I must leave behind some memories to ensure that my life won't have been in vain. I don't have many days left, after all, so I won't suppress my feelings anymore."
Then, using her weak and fragile body, she pushed Luo Binghe down.
Luo Binghe put up a brief show of resistance before telling himself "She did it all for my sake. I don't have the heart to reject her final wish." He yielded, still half-reluctant, and went along with it...
(Vol 1 Page 143 of the official translation)
Which is just...utterly tragic. I do want to be clear that it's perfectly normal for men to not actually want sex all the time, even with the gender that they're attracted to. Even if Binghe were totally straight it wouldn't be weird that he didn't want to have sex with Qin Wanyue in a life-or-death scenario like the one above. This scene on its own isn't proof that Binghe doesn't like women, but I think it does show that Bing-ge didn't start out chasing women indiscriminately; his very first time was being pressured into it.
Here's the thing. Bing-ge had no positive male figures in his life, especially when he was young. All the men he encountered were indifferent to him at best or outright cruel at worst. He spent his formative years alone with no permanent caregiver. The Meng Mo arc suggests he was on his own until the age of four or five, and that he was regularly beaten on the streets, usually by men. Once his mother took him in, she became his safety and his shelter; it was the two of them against the world. When he loses her, he resolves to join a cultivation clan to get stronger, and is immediately chosen by a graceful and talented immortal—his dream! For the first time, little Luo Binghe allows himself to believe there's going to be somebody else in his life who will protect and mentor him—but then the harsh reality is dumped on his head and he's alone again. His new Shizun punishes him harshly and encourages others to bully him. His shixiongs are only too happy to oblige. His sect leader turns a blind eye to his abuse.
But Ning Yingying...Ning Yingying is naive and a bit tactless and sometimes her interference causes him more problems than it solves, but she's well meaning, she seems to like having him around, and she's the only person who will stand up for him despite everyone telling her not to. In PIDW, she was the person he trusted the most during his time at Qing Jing Peak. Admittedly not a very high bar, but he has a friend. And then the others. Liu Mingyan, Sha Hualing, Qin Wanyue, the Little Palace Mistress...these are people who make him feel wanted. Needed.
It's a really interesting and frankly tragic mirror to Shen Jiu, who was also abused by men and for whom women became his safety. It's also interesting in the ways that they differ. He goes to brothels to sleep so he won't be around men, but there's nothing to suggest Shen Jiu actually turned to having sex with women for comfort in the way that Binghe did. Shen Jiu closes himself off completely from forming relationships with other people, even superficial ones, while Binghe can't seem to stop forming new connections, even if they never manage to satisfy him in the way he really wants.
I think the members of the harem have varying levels of genuine care and love for Binghe. Unfortunately we don’t have the benefit of their POV and we only have brief allusions to what their individual relationships with Binghe were like in PIDW. Breaking down my exact thoughts on each wife would make this essay even more bloated than it already is and wouldn’t add much overall, but in general, I do think most of them were at least physically attracted to him. Some may have married him for political or social advantages, especially once he started to amass power and…eliminate their other options. Some might have wanted the safety and protection that came with being the Saintly Ruler’s wife. I think a good chunk of them were, consciously or not, using him in some way—but Bing-ge is so desperate for human connection (or at least a parody of it) that he doesn’t really care, especially as he spends more and more time using Xin Mo. If he's being taken advantage of, it’s not like he doesn’t have the resources to support it.
But there must have been women in the harem who genuinely loved him, who wished they could be more to him than just an interchangeable face in the crowd. There must have been women whose personalities meshed well with his. Women who earned his trust and his loyalty. Women whom, if Binghe were somebody with the capacity to have romantic feelings towards women, he would have fallen in love with.
And yet, all it took was a few days with Shen Qingqiu to change everything.
Now, I don’t think Bing-ge in the extra was gearing up to give up his harem unprompted. He wanted SQQ to come back with him. I do think that if Bingmei had simply never returned and provided a way back, Bing-ge wouldn’t have regretted the loss, and I also think that if SQQ had gone back with him to join the harem, Bing-ge would have never looked at another woman in his life, but these things aren’t outright stated in canon so I can’t in good conscience present them as indisputable fact. The fandom is pretty consistent on the belief that Bing-ge goes home with his worldview shaken and develops an obsession with SY, and I think that too, but the fact remains that we will never really know for sure how he moves on from that experience. I'm pointing all this out because I really do want to give mspec Binghe as much benefit of the doubt as I possibly can.
But god…I really just don’t see how it’s possible to read the Bingge vs Bingmei extras without coming to the conclusion that Bing-ge is a gay man who is experiencing a genuine positive connection with another man for the first time in his life. He’s hostile and standoffish when he doesn’t know what’s going on, but as soon as he understands the situation, he melts. He looks at Shen Qingqiu like he’s seeing him for the first time. He starts calling his name just because he can, because he likes hearing SQQ respond to him. He becomes drunk on it, unable to stop. He offers to cuddle him to sleep. For somebody who has never had intimate relations with a man before, he doesn’t even hesitate to start seducing him once he understands the situation. Everything is just perfect—right up until SQQ sees through his deception and the facade crumbles.
I don’t think Bing-ge knew he was gay before this point. How would he? Who could possibly have been a focal point for these feelings? The only male friendship we know he had was with Mobei-Jun, and even though Mobei-Jun is also a MLM, he’s not exactly Binghe’s type and they just don’t have the kind of dynamic Binghe needs in a relationship. He’s spent his entire life being the strong one, the one who saves the maiden, the one who carries the weight of the world on his back. So the relationship he truly craves, even if he doesn’t realise it, is one where he gets to be doted on and cared for. Where he gets his hair braided.

Lowkey amused when fic writers make lwj complain about or otherwise express discomfort over eating wwx’s spicy food as if wwx didn’t fully believe right up until the fucking yi city arc that lwj loved spice. that motherfucker would have gone to his grave without ever letting wwx know that their palates were completely incompatible. In an AU where the juniors never got corpse poisoning Wwx surprises his husband one night when he gets home from training like “Lan Zhan, I made you some spicy pork and noodles 🥰🥰🥰 you’re always doing the cooking so tonight I wanted to treat you🥰🥰🥰have as much as you like!🥰🥰🥰are you excited?!” and lan wangji just gives him the sweetest smile ever to grace the face of a mortal man and goes “mn” and sits down and proceeds to eat what is essentially just a bowl of straight chilli oil without losing his composure once
