been trying to make a concerted effort to be more appreciative of my filipino heritage by engaging with the culture, learning about the history and... the pop music :') and i discovered boy group ALAMAT who are k-pop-esque but unique in that they put a distinctly filipino spin by highlighting their own diverse ethnic & cultural background by incorporating myths, traditional textiles, art, dance & history in their body of work.
super super recommend checking out their songs & MVs on youtube, if you're filipino or not!

teen wolf x original pinoy music, no. 1 — thiam and mundo by iv of spades
scenes from @/sterekargentscenes and @/scenespacksforu on instagram!
an idea that's been bouncing around my head for a while! i'm filipino (hence the opm crossover), and i think that opm should have a bigger presence in fandom spaces :D that's all <3
translation from tagalog to english via me and spotify's weird translation feature :) (it's not the best, but you can't really capture the nuances of tagalog in a single line, so i'll do my best to explain my translation edits under the cut!
disclaimer: i am not a professional tagalog to english or english to tagalog translator! i'm just bilingual :>
1. AKING SINTA — my love
sinta is a term of endearment, equivalent to love, darling, sweet, etc. aking is a possessive, like my or mine. i just took "my love" from the spotify translation, but i think darling flows better :)
2. IKAW NA ANG TAHANAN AT MUNDO — you have become my home and my world
tahanan means home, and mundo means world. gramatically, i've taken some liberties, since translating sentences like this into english is actually really difficult: it directly translates to "you are now home and world", without any possessives, but i thought adding "my" would work well in this context, even if the direct translation is beautiful as it is
3. SA PAGBALIK — when i return
here's another example where there's no subject or narrator. this directly translates to "when return", without specifying what or who returns. i've written out "when i return," even though the translation for that would be "sa aking pagbalik."
4. MANANATILI NA SA PILING MO — i will remain by your side
the direct translation is "will remain/stay with you", i just decided to take some creative liberties so it fits the context a bit better. (also thank u spotify translation)
5. MUNDO'Y MAGIGING IKAW — my world has become you
another tricky one. this one is directly "world will become you" or "you will become world" again, without any possessives or narrator. magiging is in future tense, but hey, creative liberties ! it would've been weird for me to switch the tenses in the middle of the gifset (see point 10)
6. LIMUTIN NA ANG MUNDO — forget the rest of the world
this one's gorgeous as it's direct translation: "now forget the world" which makes me go insane. to flow better in english, i modified it a little bit :D
7. NANG MAGKASAMA TAYO — when we are together
"when we are together." (direct) NO NOTES.
8. SUNOD SA BAWA'T GALAW — following every move
"following every move" (direct) this line doesn't usually have an apostrophe, but i think it makes sense :)
9. HINDI NA MALILIGAW — no more getting lost
directly: "no more getting lost" or "[you're/i'm] not getting lost [anymore]". i prefer the first translation, since it really fits in this context, but the second one is still so good i love this song so much
10. MUNDO'Y MAGIGING IKAW — my world has become you
i originally thought that the lyric went "nagiging", which is past tense, (which would make the translation "world has become you," which would've made me cry and bawl) but i decided to stick with the official lyrics just this once. even though i'm a little pissed about it
if any tagalog speaker has any notes, do leave them in the reblogs/replies! <3
also special thanks to @urmomsfavauthor for moral support !!! RAHHHH 🗣️🗣️

NEW TROLL TRIBES???
Very very much entertained by the idea of introducing new genres in the DreamWorks trolls world solely for the fact that I like imagining how the canon tribes react to their existence. I like the idea of a new genre of music that diverges from how the main tribes interpret their music (which you can see with the tags below)
Also it might just be me but if OPM (Original Pinoy Music) exists there (lmao just pushing the Filo rep agenda here), I can imagine them just being yet another Trollstopia but smaller bc DANG this genre of music has EVERYTHINGGGGG
Well that and recent singles have this very unique sound with the likes of Pagsamo, Mahika, Pano (a personal fav), Pasilyo, Habang Buhay and much more. I have no idea if this kind of music is a subgenre of its own but something about it just scratches my brain, which says a lot bc despite being Filipino I actually don't listen to OPM very often
Anyways this was a shitty rant like I have so much to say abt this but I also feel like the details are all over the place
PLS PLS PLS SHARE UR THOUGHTS BRAINSTORM WITH ME I NEED TO KNOW I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS

It’s the very reason the group was launched in February 2021: while original P-pop music saw success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, support faced a steep decline once groups started modeling themselves after their Korean counterparts. The industry lacked diversity and by extension, a distinct identity: something Alamat has in spades. Today, they are ready to live up to their name (which means “legends” in English) as the first multiethnic, multilingual act in the Philippines.
Alamat came together from all over the country. Leader, main dancer, and sub-vocalist Taneo (22 years old) is from Tabuk, Kalinga, in the far North; co-leader Mo (20) is a half-Black American from Castillejos, Zambales; Jao (20) comes from Pampanga and the group’s center Tomás (24) from Tabaco City, Albay. Vocalist and visual R-Ji (23) is a Waray-Waray from Borongan, Eastern Samar, while rapper-producer Alas (21) is a Bisaya from Davao City.
All were students with side jobs prior to joining the group, and while they all agree that this gig positively changed the trajectory of their lives, the journey was not without doubts. “Lately, it seems like Filipinos gravitate towards foreign influences more: our appreciation for our culture has slowly started to fade. So when we heard of the concept of this boy group, we couldn’t help but think it was risky,” Jao admits.
Alamat’s creative director Jason Paul Laxamana further outlines to Teen Vogue via email the complexities in P-pop and K-pop, and how they’ve affected Alamat’s reception in the country. “For Pinoy K-pop fans, they would judge Alamat based on their standards: glossy sets, Korean-style choreography, and even physical appearance like light skin and colored eyes,” Laxamana says. “Since Alamat doesn’t follow their formula 100%, many perceive them to be doing it wrong.”
But these risks seem to have paid off, as they’ve built an impressive portfolio of songs that illuminate the Philippines’ illustrious culture. “Kbye,” for instance, is their debut anthem about ghosting sung in seven of our local languages. “Kasmala” — which recently went viral for its “f*ck colonizers” concept — references the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, where Filipino natives were displayed like zoo animals before a foreign audience. Their latest EP Pasulong has the sensual and bass-heavy “Aswang” as the lead single, where all six members fall for the country’s most popular urban legend: a bloodsucker that only appears at night.

Alamat "ILY ILY" is beautiful
Tumblr media
hi, I'm just gonna write something quick to process my thoughts and analysis bc this MV and the song is so good and dense with message.
Tumblr media
For some vague contexts, OFWs or overseas filipino workers, are often heralded as “Bagong Bayani” (trans. the new heroes)  as they bring in millions of pesos every year to help with expenses and living costs back home. As of Nov 8 2022, $1 (US dollar) = roughly Php 58 (Philippine peso). I’m not sure how it’s changed over the years, but in 2010-14, at least for me, Php 50 can buy you an entire lunch meal in school.
ILY ILY is a multi-genre song by Alamat with the melody originally from a Hiligaynon folk lullaby "Ili Ili tulog Anay". I believe the song itself talks a lot about the sacrifices OFW parents make for the financial security and comfort of their children back in the motherland (Philippines). And the subsequent emotional consequences and psychological effects these have on the family. The irony of ILY ILY also doubles as "i love you, i love you" is not lost on me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting off strong! "Ano ba?? Ganyan ka na lang pala!" -very common scolding terms, especially from a older guardian or parental figures.
"Hindi ka ba nag-iisip na may naghihirap doon..." - kind of guilt-tripping the child for crying, being angry, or generally just not feeling happy by bringing up their working parents (likely OFWs) and their sacrifices; generally an unhealthy way of soothing someone's frustrations over neglect or dissatisfaction.
I love how money comes out of the cake. Usually another way to soothe their children, is by bringing in more money, for more comfort. But that doesn't phase Lyca (the female singer).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
presents for the children... again, to make up for not being their for their birthday or whatever missed celebrations (especially during formative years of their childhood)
Tumblr media
I'm trying to figure out which specific Filipino festival this is refering to. I know a few filo street festivals that reenact the Passion of Christ (ex. Sinulog, Moriones, Salibatbat, etc.) which sometimes includes self-whipping, which the crown, candles, and ropes here are symbolizing.
The lyrics are so on point,
Gabi-gabi at umaga (every night, and every day) Pangungulila ang dama (feeling bereaved, "ulila"="orphan", which is on theme) Hihintayin ang araw na (waiting for the day) Tayo'y magsasama-sama ([where] we all get together)
This is supposed to remind you of the sacrifices people make for love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^^^Can someone tell me what these are referencing? I feel like this is supposed to be something from a filipino film or something similar, but I'm blanking on where it might be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the direct parallel of the filipino kid having a yaya (maid/ domestic helper) back home while the parent is the housekeeper in a different country. Just *chefs kiss* GENIUS!!🤌🤌
the lyrics shows how much the child/children cares about their parents. in the midst of happiness and abundance around Lyca, she can't help but miss her mom and dad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Island Maid - from a quick online search, it's a domestic helper agency in Singapore. Upon looking into their website, they hire Filipino workers trained under Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Beside R-Ji is a balikbayan box, large cardbord boxes used to deliver souvenirs, gifts, clothes, furniture, and other things back to the country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lyrics now talk about how the child (R-Ji) aspires one day to be the one to work so they can bring their parents back home. (And, in a way, isn't that a tragic cycle of poverty and capitalism? Parents have to work away to bring money and food home, and the child has to work in order to bring their parents back home.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very powerful imagery. The waste, the anger, the sadness, the loneliness, while surrounded by presents, money, comfort.
Tumblr media
Sacrifices, all in the name of family and love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this part. From what I've gathered, in here, Taneo talks (in Ilokano) to the tone of an eldest sibling, about how he's going to take care [of you] for now. The lyrics shift the emotional burden of parenting to a fellow child, with the parents abroad and likely, unavailable. He throws paper airplanes made of paper money out the window while an airplane (parents?) flies in the back. Lost childhood maybe?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another strong imagery. Money in a kaldero (used to cook food, usually rice, stew, and other filipino cuisine) while everyone is situated in a Boodle Fight (eating tradition where food is served on top of banana leaves).
Tumblr media
"they've been gone too long so I'll be your Dad and Mom for now", again referencing about the physical and emotional unavailability of parents that older siblings or family members have to take on to fill that gap.
"'Nang, 'tang, muli na kayu" (Mom, dad, please go home)
At the emotional crux of the song, the lines said over the "telephone" sound is so poignant. They need their parents to go home. But instead...
Tumblr media
...All they got were more Balikbayan boxes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and all they can do is fight over who gets them. Empty boxes. empty gifts of love. God, I love this song. Stream ILY ILY.

[LYRICS]
Providence feat. Hatsune Miku
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na
World is slowly crumbling, have no fear
Everything is falling into its place
Sa likod ng ulan may araw,
Simbolo ng bukas at pagasa ahhhh
Through the lens of fear, demons you can hear.
Wag mong pansinin mundong puno ng katiwalian. Look into the heavens see a glimpse of new life.
Empires fall, scars through it all.
It reminds us hope is there to hold.
Pagdurusa’y matatapos, kapit lang hanggang sa dulo.
Keep moving on, and know you are strong
The winds of life can’t tear you down and cause you to crawl
Ang lahat ay matatapos nandito ako’t sasama sayo.
There’s no turning back, now we’re all here
End of days, the deception, see and hear
Pagbabago para sa iba, ang gawin, ang dulo at tadhana.
Through the lens of fear, demons you can hear.
Wag mong pansinin mundong puno ng katiwalian. May bukas na maganda sating buhay.
Now the end is near! We are truth’s seer
We don’t need to run. It’s now or never. Oh we need to fight
Tagumpay sa atin wag na wag bibitaw
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na
Empires fall, scars through it all.
It reminds us hope is there to hold.
Pagdurusa’y matatapos, kapit lang hanggang sa dulo.
Keep moving on, and know you are strong
The winds of life can’t tear you down and cause you to crawl
Ang lahat ay matatapos nandito ako’t sasama sayo
Aaaaahhh
Empires fall, scars through it all.
It reminds us hope is there to hold.
Pagdurusa’y matatapos, kapit lang hanggang sa dulo.
Keep moving on, and know you are strong
The winds of life can’t tear you down and cause you to crawl
Ang lahat ay matatapos nandito ako’t sasama sayo
Habang buhay’t humihinga
Tumindig, ang pag asay narito na
‘Kay manalangin, tiwala!
Ang pag asa’y nasa ‘yong mga kamay
