day 12
today's bird is the baltimore oriole!
- the word oriole comes from the latin word for golden, aureolus
- baltimore orioles have a serious sweet tooth. they love fruit, jelly, and nectar– especially oranges

A Collection of Mini Garden Birds
Spotting a beautiful bird in your backyard is like watching a fashion show. This Collection of Mini Garden Birds is a set of eight different soft vinyl birds that you can arrange to your heart's desire. The package is designed to look like a birdhouse, so you could just leave the figures in the package or take them out and make displays in your house. Hide them for your partner so you can take turns bird-spotting! Each 1-1/8" to 1-3/8" tall figure is based on a real bird. Includes Steller’s Jay, Goldfinch, Oriole, Blue Jay, Cardinal, Blue Tit and more!

Good birds of today included this orchard oriole who must have returned in the last few days, plus recently returned barn swallows and migrating black and white warblers. I also heard horned larks and saw a kestrel. Others like brown thrashers, towhees, blue-gray gnatcatchers, hermit thrushes and tree swallows have been back for a while. Every day there are new birds. Expecting wood thrushes and catbirds any time. Hummingbirds too. During the migration I may make bird tally posts. If you don’t want to see them just mute #bird tally . :-) I get pretty excited about this.

January 31, 2024 - Orange-crowned Oriole (Icterus auricapillus) These orioles are found in and around humid forests and in cultivated areas with trees in parts of northern South America. Foraging in pairs, small family groups, and mixed-species flocks with other orioles, they feed on arthropods, fruits, and nectar. Their hanging nests are woven mainly from palm fibers, usually under palm fronds. Females lay clutches of two eggs.

It has been a while
since I posted some photos but things have been rather quiet with so many birds nesting right now. But the light is nice and the backyard looks green and I am excited about all that’s coming up. Here are a few from the last couple of days. I had to move the cams around a bit to avoid direct sunlight, so there are some fun different backgrounds. (male Redbellied Woodpecker, Grackle, male Bluebird, female Rosebreasted Grosbeak, juvenile Starling, male Rosebreasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, Blue Jay)
