"why did Orpheus turn to check if Eurydice is there if he can just return to Hadestown if Hades really did lie about letting her go" that's the thing. he can't. the only reason he can enter Hadestown without taking Hades' deal/dying is because the lalalas open the way for him. Eurydice only gave him a chance after he showed her the power of the lalalas. and in Doubt Comes In, his lalalas no longer work - twice he tries to call on them, and twice he fails. he has lost the ability to wield their magic because he stopped believing their power can change the world. if he leaves Hadestown and Eurydice isn't behind him, she will well and truly be gone forever. of course he turns around. of course he can't take those final few steps out of the Underworld without making sure the lalalas worked.

honestly have yet to play a video game where i didn’t feel like the climax kinda fumbled the ball. it’s really really really hard to transmute the sense of potential and possibility inherent to a video game into a narratively satisfactory close that meshes with ALL the player’s choices. bg3 did pretty well for me but still. i have a sense i will be running many a playthrough where i simply don’t make it past that orpheus vs emperor bullshit

if you only have to watch one (1) genshin lore video, I highly recommend this one. not because it's a beginner-friendly guide to those new to the lore (it's not), but because the vibes of this theory are immaculate and explains like... the kinds of things that fascinate me about the game
paimon is consecrated for consumption, in a eucharist way. blood is wine is memories is life is power. ambrosia for ascension. the blood to the traveler's bones
there are so many things in the game that seem like innocuous off-hand comments but when put into a bigger picture, is so ???
like. do you ever think about how paimon likes to eat slimes because they are pure elemental energy, and she functions as the traveler's conduit for the elements similar to a vision for vision-wielders (even though she is not a vision)
Tumblr media
and what does this mean for the traveler who is hinted to be a star? how much can they consume before they "collapse under their own gravity", so to speak
I really have nothing to add, I just wanted to share how much I love the vibes of the content of this video. this is peak genshin theorizing to me

I’m midway through Portrait of a Lady on Fire and so far these are my thoughs (beware spoilers):
> this reflects perfectly why erotic art pieces of men (created by other men, such as saint sebastian, paintings, sculptures) are symbols of homoerotism. there is a clear intimacy and erotism in staring at someone attently enough to capture their essence on marble or on a canvas, so the erotism lies not so much on the final product but in all the process it represents. I mean, when the-lady-on-fire (I don’t remember names, sorry) accepts to model for the painter, and the painter starts telling her all her gestures and what does she do when she has a certain emotion... that, that observation, that getting to know someone deeply through perception, that putting them in a piece of art and portraiting all that you see in them; that, that is such a symbol of intimacy and erotism.
> my friend who recommended me this movie had already told me about all the symbolisms with Orpheus and staring. It is interesting, before the scene where the-lady-on-fire reads the fragment from Ovid, there have already been a lot of parallels through the movie. There is a constant play between the-lady-on-fire and the painter of staring, facing the back of the other, looking at without being looked at, observing secretly as if you shouldn’t be observing (specially the painter). I mean, in the first scene they have together, the face-to-face interaction is delayed: the painter stares at the back of the-lady-on-fire and follows her and starts running after her, and only after the-lady-on-fire stops and turns around they face each other. At the beginning, it’s made clear that it’s the-lady-on-fire who doesn’t want to be looked at: she refused the previous painter, and she’s often turned back from the new painter; and so this lady-on-fire, we know, is Eurydice.
(but at the same time, the painter is the one who is intentionally often hiding from the-lady-on-fire, because she’s lying; she lives and paints behind her curtains, she sketches the-lady-on-fire secretly, while the other one is looking away)
> this leads me to the last part. When the three girls are discussing Orpheus’ motives and faults in having turned to look at Eurydice, the painter says he chose to do so because he chose not as a lover, but as a poet (as an artist, as she is doing as a painter) and he chose the memory of Eurydice instead of Eurydice herself; to this, the-lady-on-fire responds that maybe Eurydice asked Orpheus to turn back. And that’s what is happening: the painter ruined the first portrait, so the lady-on-fire offered to pose for her to paint her again (she asked the painter to turn back and look at her) and the painter did (the painter is again staring at her to portrait -and remember- her, instead of developing something further with the-lady-on-fire)
>I almost forgot. The joy, the life, the emotions that will fill the portrait are those of the lady-on-fire in love, and that is how her husband-to-be will perceive her and her beauty. But these emotions are not directed towards him, but towards the painter; and the painter is in some level directing this painting towards him. There is an interesting triangle forming here that reminds me so fucking much of Anne Carson’s Eros the bittersweet.

I didn’t mini-liveblog The Golden Enclaves like the others, so here are my key thoughts:
what ORPHEUS & EURYDICE BULLSHIT—
Tumblr media
Gwen Higgins MVP
at some point in her youth, Liesel watched the s6 finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, specifically the scene where Xander talks Dark Willow down from destroying the world with a heartfelt monologue about friendship and a symbolic yellow crayon, and thought, “Yeah, that could be me!”, and I love that for her. Get this woman a yellow crayon.
I can’t find it now but I saw a poll asking what your top ugly sobbing moment for these books was, so let the record note that mine was, “He would have taken you up the mountain and holding you in his arms, leapt.”
I was totally comfortable with El in ratty, unwashed clothes in the Scholomance itself, but now that she’s out, I DO keep involuntarily imagining her dressed as her honored inspiration Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way.
Orion gets to stay at the school that he and he alone loved his time at, and protect all the magical children of the world…there are going to be students, starting with the freshmen class they already saved, whose only experience of the Scholomance includes the fierce guardianship of Orion and El… 🥹 😭 ❤️ I hope he gets some lame but appropriate and punny title like “Custodian.”

it’s me! again! a greek myth nerd! i have thoughts on the hades vid. (this is kind of liveblogging so it’s not entirely coherent)
first off the acting is very much tiktok-y. i think his glasses are fab (i’m a glasses-wearing person so i love when people give their characters glasses <3). ig my main question is what version of hades is this??? disney hades or greek myth hades? because the intro font is from disney’s hercules but this doesn’t seem like that version of hades. script is ok.
myth annoyances (myths are kind of subjective tho so take it with a grain of salt):
it’s “CARE-on” also not “SHARE-on.” just gets on my nerves a little bit.
oop no one goes to heaven or purgatory anymore. because of paperwork?????
orpheus and eurydice are married, not just bf/gf
old girl persephone??? they were the best couple in the greek myths!
this is a pet peeve of mine that’s constant - how does hades know about hell?? why is he referencing it if it’s not real?
ty for reading, hope you’re doing well :)
ty for your perspective! im honestly not surprised he got some things wrong
