"Alright, Guerin, shut your fuckin' mouth and sit the fuck down."
Guerin didn't have to look up, he knew the voice well enough even if it had been a decade since it talked to him like that. Rosa Ortecho stood with her arms crossed over her chest and that angsty teen look on her face that felt like a force to be reckoned with because it was. With a sigh, he sat down in front of the fire pit and she sat across from him.
"So, listen, I know it's been ten years for you guys and, like, a week and a half for me, but that just tells me I have a much better perspective of the dumb shit happening," Rosa said. He didn't respond. "I don't know all the little details, but I do know that a week and a half ago my baby Alex was happy as can be with you paying attention to him, Maria was happily getting her liquor license, and you were happily opening acceptance letters."
"Rosa, what's the p–"
"Now my little angel baby is fucking heartbroken and feeling betrayed on every level, Maria feels like she's been hit with a guilt bomb, and you are suspiciously at the spearhead of it all," she said, an all too cocky look on her face. They used to be friends. She had taken him under wing as a fellow freak. This wasn't a friendly speech.
"Rosa, I just watched my mom die and my brother die and I figured out my sister had been being fucked over by her husband for over a decade," he snapped. She rolled her eyes like she didn't care.
"I know you have your shit and I'm not saying they're completely innocent and I totally plan to go give them a talk too," she said in a tone two steps away from condescending, "I am saying that you have no right to make their lives worse because you're upset."
"I'm not doing it on purpose," Michael said, his eyes still narrowed at her.
"Yeah, nor are you taking responsibility for what you did," she scoffed, leaning back, "You aren't allowed to be reckless with other people and just not care."
"I do care!" he argued, "I just have a million other things to care about!"
"The people you love should be first priority, I learned that the hard way."
"They are!" He was yelling loudly now, but she didn't seem phased.
"If they are, then why are they both at home crying because of shit you did and you haven't apologized to either of them?" Rosa asked him. He sunk in his chair. "Again, they aren't innocent. Alex should've been more forward with his feelings, Maria shouldn't have gone after you when she knew what you meant to Alex. But that doesn't mean that you don't have to fix the part you played in the disaster."
He looked up at the sky and tried not to hate her too much for being right.
"I know you're hurting, but so are they. If you guys stop hurting each other, then maybe you can heal together," Rosa said. He sighed long and loud.
"When the fuck did you get so wise? Two weeks ago for you, you were trying to smoke a blunt with your nose," he said. She grinned like she was proud and he didn't know if it was because of the advice or the nose blunt.
"Ten years in a pod gives you a lot of time to think."
"You were dead!"
"We can't all be perfect."
Michael let out a soft, disbelieving laugh as he shook his head. She was smiling at him still and it made him question if the pride was for him.
"You're a man now, Papi. Act like it."
Michael gulped.
"I will."

Michael is certain his roommate is going to be the death of him.
They met thanks to Michael’s college lab partner (and also Michael’s brother’s girlfriend), Liz Ortecho. And only because Max was leaving the apartment to move in with Liz. He still remembers her insisting, “You’ll love him, Mikey!”
The problem is that she was a little too right.
Alex is thoughtful and kind, immediately offering to share his guitar with Michael when he learns that Michael plays but doesn’t have one. He’s organized, always cleaning up after himself far better than Michael or Max ever had. And his sass never ceases to make Michael smile.
He also smells amazing, in a way that makes Michael want to bury his face in Alex’s neck and inhale. His easy affection only serves to leave Michael longing for more. And his hands… Well, he’s always wearing black nail polish and stacks of silver rings that draw attention to those long fingers and strong palms that leave Michael with thoughts of being held down and taken apart by him.
It’s not like Michael’s attraction to men is new to him. But Alex is his roommate. And that makes him off limits.
It’s not just that though.
Coming home to Alex every night, curling up on the couch with him while they watch TV, playing music with him, trying to explain his latest project to Alex, trying to understand Alex’s latest coding puzzle… It’s the first time in his life that Michael has felt like he truly belonged somewhere. Outside of Max and Isobel, anyway.
So he’s happy to have Alex in his life, however he can.

He’s just unlocking the door to his apartment one day, phone balanced between his shoulder and his ear as Isobel tells him all about the Thanksgiving dinner she has planned for them. She’s insisted that both Max and Michael travel to visit her, rather than her coming to visit them and, well, neither one of them has managed to figure out how to say no to her.
“And bring that boyfriend you’ve been hiding from me!” she demands just as he’s opened the door.
In his shock (and attempts to juggle everything), he drops the phone. So it’s a few seconds before he picks it back up again and manages to say, intelligently, “Huh?”
“Come on, Michael. Both Max and Liz have met him. You don’t have to keep hiding him from me!”
Michael is well aware that maybe it’s a problem that he knows exactly who she’s referring to. “I’m not-- We aren’t--”
“Please. You’ve been half in love with him since you met him. Oh, Isobel, he’s so funny. Oh, Isobel, he has the voice of an angel. Oh, Isobel, his smile is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
Michael would argue, but the only thing she’s said that he could argue with is that he’s only half in love with Alex Manes.
“If you’re not dating, you need to put yourself out of your misery and ask him out. That’s all I’m saying,” she continues. “And invite him to come with you! We do have two guest bedrooms, after all. Plenty of room in one of them for you and Alex.”
Before he can say anything, she’s hung up.
“Was that Isobel?” Alex asks, from the kitchen, oblivious to Michael’s panic. “I bet she’s got a long list of things she expects you to bring.”
“Yeah, she wanted me to bring you,” Michael blurts out before he thinks.
“Really?” Alex looks surprised and, if Michael didn’t know any better, hopeful.
“Yeah, um, I know you’re probably busy and don’t want to--”
“I wouldn’t want to impose, but--”
“Wait, you’d want to go?” Michael asks.
“It’s not like I was planning on going to spend the long weekend with my family. And,” Alex blushes, ducks his head, “I don’t know, this place feels really empty when you’re not here.” He pauses before continuing, “I mean, I'm not exactly fond of Thanksgiving, and I know you were looking forward to some time with your siblings, but--”
“I’d love it if you came with me!”
“Really?” Alex looks unsure.
“Yeah. Will you be ready to leave after work tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I’ll get started packing after dinner.”

It's late when they reach Isobel's and she's quick to push drinks into their hands.
So it's only when Michael is staring across the far too small bed at Alex, whose t-shirt is stretched tightly over his obscenely muscular chest, that Michael realizes what a huge mistake he's made.
Apparently, he’s staring too long, because Alex offers, “I can sleep on the floor if it’s a problem.”
He looks like he’s trying to hide his hurt, and Michael can’t handle that, so he instantly reassures Alex, “It’s not a problem. I just…” He tries to think of a way to explain, a way that doesn’t involve him explaining that he’s been in love with Alex for a long time. “Isobel thinks we’re dating,” he admits instead.
Alex laughs as he climbs under the covers, “Yeah, Liz thinks the same thing.”
Michael joins him, forcing a laugh, “Apparently, two queer dudes can’t be friends.”
Alex’s expression is soft and warm when he says, “Or not just friends, anyway.”
Michael takes a breath, takes a chance, “What if I don’t want to be just friends?”
“You don’t?”
“I mean, I’m good with just being friends if that’s what you want and I’d rather just be friends than lose your friendship, but--”
Alex silences him by placing a hand on his jaw, waiting until Michael is silent, is paying attention, to lean in and press a kiss against his lips, a kiss that Michael enthusiastically returns.

The next morning, Isobel winks at Michael when she hands him his coffee. It’s only then when he notices that Max won’t look up from his own cup of coffee, that he’s not even looking at Liz as she’s talking about something new she’s working on.
To Michael’s surprise, Kyle pats him on the shoulder and says, “I’m happy for you, man.”
Alex comes into the room a moment later and grabs Michael’s coffee from him, taking a sip of it and, well, if it were anyone else, Michael would object, but then Alex is pressing a kiss to his cheek and he’s pretty sure the grin on his face is even bigger than the grin on Isobel’s. He’ll have to thank her for her meddling later. For now, he’s just going to enjoy having all his favorite people around him.

Creator’s Week 2021 for @roswellnewmexicocreate - Day 1 : Character Recs
This is my favorite fandom event, and my third year doing it. The last year was really difficult, and fanfic more than ever was my escape from it. Shout out to all the writers, commenters, and lurkers who kept fandom going during it.
Rosa Ortecho:
heal it or break it all apart by @adiwriting : (7,600) All Rosa’s ever done is break things. Her entire life she’s destroyed everything she’s ever touched. So it’s really no surprise when she comes back that her powers do the same. Alternatively- 4 times somebody tries to get Rosa to seek help with her powers and one time she decides to help herself. GEN
why i like it: I pretty much love whatever Britt writes, but in the light of how season 3 is going, I found myself returning to this fic more than a few times. She really captures the fierce but vulnerable Rosa in this beautifully.
Kyle Valenti:
at every occasion i’ll be ready for a funeral by @bydayornight (1,330) Kyle goes on a vacation after the events of 3x04 and meets an unlikely beach companion. GEN
why i like it: Christine has become one of my new favorite writers, and has been a season 3 coda writing machine. Here is where we all would like Kyle to be - lounging on a beach without a care in the world (with that RNM twist! lol) She also does a brilliant job with the Kyle and Michael vibes here.
Maria Deluca:
Butter(bar)flies by @andrea-lyn (4,447) When all of Maria’s people fly away for new opportunities, she needs to find new ones. The lost decade and what should have been. MILUCA
why i like it: Manda has written some of my favorite stories, and even has dragged me into Ted Lasso, but this little lost decade AU is one of my favorites. She captures the flirty vibe of season 1 Michael/Maria, and inserts it into a time when it really makes sense to me for that a friends-with-benefits-relationship should have begun, to give weight to a choice for Michael. Maria is wonderfully characterized here, and it really makes it clear how a real love triangle should have been structured.
Liz Ortecho:
heart of lightning (a roswellian tale) by @bitch-ass-aliens (20,095) When Ser Elizabeth Ortecho of the Roswellian Court is sent by Queen Isobel to retrieve the heart of the missing King Maxwell from a fearsome lightning dragon guarding it, she knows success could bring her one step closer to completing a quest of her own. Ten years ago, a mage named Ophiuchus curse her sister with eternal slumber, and Liz has been searching for him ever since. Saving the king could be the key to learning Ophiuchus's true identity and saving Rosa. But the dragon is not what it appears to be. Soon Liz finds herself needing to guard her heart from feelings forgotten long ago as she and her friends journey back to Roswell, King Max by their side, with more than just the fate of Rosa hanging in the balance. For Ophiuchus's plans are bigger and more dangerous than any of them realize. ECHO
why i like it: This was part of the RNM Big Bang last year and as a fellow participant, I did my best to read and feedback the other submissions, which meant reading something that wasn’t Malex 😂🤯 - suz made it easy, writing a beautifully detailed medieval AU that retold the story of Rosa, Noah, and Max’s S1 sacrifice, through the amazing POV of Ser Liz. This story had everything I love about Liz- her devotion to her family, her bravery in doing hard things, and her love for Max.
Max Evans:
highway to the sun by @angsty-nerd (22,236) Noah’s heart is failing, and Max is on the verge of death. His final wish is to see Liz one last time, so he and Michael road trip to Los Angeles so that Max can say his goodbyes. ECHO
why i like it: Another part of the 2020 RNM Big Bang - Instead of a focus on Liz in this Echo story, we’re deep in the psyche of Max Evans, who is trying to tie up loose ends before he dies. I love the atmosphere of the road trip, the sadness of the clock that Max is trying to run out, and the whole Michael/Max brotherly bond in this story. It’s got all the sweet elements of some of my favorite romantic dramas - like “Beaches” or “Dying Young”, but mixed with the sci fi of RNM. Even though it was written pre-season 3, I really love how it ties up season 2 here.
Alex Manes:
i’m just like my mother, we both love to run @meneatyoghurt (5,211) After what his dad does, he runs and runs and runs. A look at Alex's relationship with running, from track and field to leaving Roswell. MALEX IMPLIED
why i like it: Alex is one of my favorite characters on RNM, mostly because of how hard he tries in spite of his flaws. I love a good story that focuses on why it’s a struggle for Alex to be present, and doesn’t shy away from the fallout of his actions. This is a gorgeous look into Alex and his tendency to run to feel safe, and how that affects his relationships, and why he wants to stop. I just have a lot of feelings about Alex, especially after reading this.
Michael Guerin :
looking for yourself out there by @haloud (6,670) It’s early; it’s a weeknight. Michael can only be here to get blasted or for Marco himself, and both of them know it.It’s been a while since this was a game, for Michael. The flirting he did with Maria was something else, a class all her own. Sex, and the lead up to sex, for the longest time was either life-or-death or it was a helpless, hopeless lashing out for any human contact. (It was either Alex, or it was Maria, or it wasn’t.)So this is nice. MICHAEL/OTHER
why i like it: I privately think hal understands Michael Guerin like no other, and their fic is just a delight for anyone who wants to look under that macho cowboy exterior to see him. One of the things we both agree on as Michael Guerin fans, is that Alex is not the male exception for Michael. And while the show will probably never deliver a Michael/OMC storyline like they have with Max/Jenna, Isobel/Blair, Liz/Heath, Alex/Forrest - that’s what fanfic is for and this story is so satisfiying. If you don’t come away from this story loving Marco and wishing he was real... I don’t know what to tell you. I was so inspired by it, I wrote my own Michael/OMC story.
Isobel Evans:
future starts slow by @foramomentonly (4,799) The bartop is sticky, but Maria's skin is clean and soft.This is how it starts. Brushes of fingers as Maria passes over a glass of wine; her cool, dry hand cupping Isobel's wrist as she reads her palm; Isobel's fingertips pressed to Maria's temples, wisps of curls caught around her knuckles as they practice combining their powers. MARIBEL
why i like it: It’s just facts that Maria and Isobel have incredible chemistry, their banter is off the charts, and I love this sexy story of Isobel approaching Maria for more after they’ve been circling each other for a while. It’s a gorgeous look at two strong women who very rarely let down their guards, but for each other, they do. The sex is really hot, but I think what lingers most with me is how this story rewards the swan dive of hope, Isobel after a lifetime of “being who she should be” becomes who she wants to be, a woman who loves fiercely but not destructively. Of course, Maria is no wilting flower here, which makes it all the sweeter.

Steven Krueger enjoys his time working on various TV series.
During his time on “Roswell, New Mexico,” the Los Angeles-based actor spent six months in New Mexico, where he had fun.
“That’s one of my favorite parts of working on a TV series,” he says. “You get to spend months in an entirely different city. Ironically, I went and shadowed the directors and the state in general. My expectations were high. The experience really exceeded them.”
Krueger plays Heath, the love interest for Liz Ortecho.
He says Heath is a bit more complex than he lets on.
“Heath is guided by his loyalty to the people he’s close with,” he says. “As we get deeper into the season, it all unfolds. We’ll leave that for a later time.”
Krueger is the newcomer to the successful CW series, and there was a little bit of trepidation coming into a series that is running smoothly.
“I started at a deficit,” he says. “But as I read the scripts and storylines, it became clear who Heath was. Of course, there are the worries of having an established fan base and wondering if Heath will be accepted. I mean he is the love interest of Liz. He’s also the intruder into this series.”
Krueger immediately slipped into the groove on set. He’s worked with a large number of the cast before on other series.
“It was a breath of fresh air,” he says of being on set in New Mexico. “There were good people all around. They were lovely and welcoming, which isn’t necessarily the norm. From Day One, stepping onto the set was wonderful.”
The production also had to find a way to keep everyone safe due to COVID protocols.
“It was a relief to see,” he says. “Coming back from the pandemic break, it could have gone badly.”
Although Krueger is enjoying the reaction to the new season, he’s been busy working on another series in Canada.
He snagged a role on the coming series “Yellowjackets,” in which he plays one of the few male leads.
He went from working on “Roswell, New Mexico” to the new series.
“I had three days to drive from Santa Fe to Vancouver, Canada,” he says. “It’s been going from one show directly to another.”
Because of travel restrictions still in place, Krueger has been living in Vancouver while shooting the show.
“This is such a unique show,” he says of “Yellowjackets.” “The beauty of the show is that it’s almost entirely a female-led project. It’s been really rewarding to have this opportunity to learn from all these great actors.”
Krueger hopes to return to New Mexico either for another project or for some of his time.
He often found himself eating at local restaurants in Santa Fe, as well as going hiking.
“I’m a huge outdoor fan,” he says. “One day I went and saw Bandelier (National Monument), and it was a blast. I have to say that I judge places on their food, and Santa Fe is at the top of my list. There’s so much to experience there.”
