My journey with Idol’s animes and mangas - Part 3
A new path of this journey has ended. Today I'm going to talk about “Kami Kuzu Idol” (or, “Phantom of the Idol”, but I don't like the choice of the english title).
Tumblr media
BUT! First of all I want to say, I’m not a big fan of men idols. I tried, it is hard (but lately maybe is not), and I just can say the biggest company of men idols is Johnny’s, where you can find groups like Arashi, NEWS, Hey! Say! JUMP, Sexy Zone (if you saw Fuller House, you might know them) or King & Prince;
Tumblr media
but I know there’s another one called DD Company, which has groups I’ve been told to listen (and are interesting), these being MeseMoa, *ChocoLate Bomb!! and Panda Dragon.
Tumblr media
Okay but… Why am I saying this? Well...
Kami Kuzu Idol is an anime about a guy called Niyodo Yuuya, who is in a duet group with Yoshino Kazuki called ZINGS
Tumblr media
; this guy (Niyodo) is an idol just because he thought it was easy money,
Tumblr media
has the problem that he doesn’t give his best… Well, anything. Suddenly he found the ghost of the “Kami Idol” Mogami Asahi; we have them talking about how Asahi died, how she really misses being an idol (she died just when she reached the center as she said). After a small and involuntary action from Asahi (she literally possessed his body and couldn’t get out for a moment), they started working together
Tumblr media
and making Yuuya a better idol and partner for Kazuki, because, yes, there was a kind of threat to both of them to get better (well, Niyodo) or Yoshino would go solo (and he has a bit of stage panic).
Tumblr media
After the first live being possessed by Asahi, all changed.
I won’t lie, I hated Yuuya, at first he even wanted to overwork Asahi, but she wants to see him get better. Niyodo doesn’t know a thing about idols, seems to not pay even a small attention to what he’s been told at work, or about being a fan, so he won’t give a kind of connection with his fans, as idols do. So Asahi’s work also becomes a kind of “Let me teach you about this wonderful world, work, my never ending dream” (she doesn’t say this, is my interpretation of her actions).
Tumblr media
A part of the anime is also “OshiBudo like”, this meaning that fans have a point to exist as characters. Mainly three fans, who are Niyodo’s. They’re more comic, but as I said about OshiBudo, they work for their idols; oh right, in this case the fans are all women…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until a certain moment, because ZINGS isn’t the only group, another important (just one character to be honest) is C Grass. They are the biggest idol group in the anime, “The princes of the nation” or something like that. Well the leader Setouchi Hikaru, was (or better said still is) a big fan of Mogami Asahi, and he was looking to ZINGS, he found sometimes the same mannerisms of Asahi on Niyodo (I wonder what would he think if he knew the truth)
Tumblr media
and he even threatened Yuuya to stop disrespecting Asahi in that way, this also makes him to try not use her a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This anime was nice to watch, but tries to convey many things (i think) in 10 episodes.
Now a meme i agree with for most of this anime.
Tumblr media
The important point is how it ends, saying that an idol is someone who stands on a stage and shines, so they make their fans’ hearts shine, and while the fans loves them more, the idol’s shine will grow, and as the fans keep loving them (this meaning after they are idols, whatever is the reason) they will keep shining; obviously this last part are heavier words as it refers Asahi’s death, and her surprise about still having fans that still love her; but it is applicable to that time after the day they graduate (leave being idols, specially if they become a normal person)
Tumblr media
I like how Asahi explains what being a fan is, how a fan feels, how important it is to Niyodo, even though this dummy just realices it basically in the last episode.
The songs are nice to listen to, but i wouldn’t get all over that, but the meaning of some of these are explained at the last episode.
The opening was “Let’s ZING!”
The endings changed basically for every episode (well, it was more like rotative)
Personally I Liked “Uraomote no Duet” and “Hare La Lu La”
The 3D was used for scenes where they dance, but I found it a bit weird when i looked at Niyodo, personally i don’t think it fits right with his character design.
Tumblr media
THEY HAVE DIADEM MICROPHONES! I’m sold with microphones at sight (please learn SHINEPOST)
Tumblr media
I think I don’t need to say that Asahi Mogami is my favorite character; but also, without her there, the story wouldn’t exist as it is. She’s cute, a top idol, she really likes that work, and is really proud about it,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but not being annoying, that’s why she helps Yuuya; she has told even when she failed, stuff she doesn’t know about (skin care for example) and how she did it. She is such a pure soul.
Tumblr media
Yoshino is a cute guy, the total opposite of Yuuya, like a lost puppy I'd say. You think in the first episode he might lack self trust, and is confirmed later. He does his best, maybe limited by that self trust lack.
Tumblr media
The Niyodo fans are funny, in a way relatable, but not as much as the fans we saw on OshiBudo; because it is also a completely different ambient. You can see part of ZINGS 'story through them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Niyodo is annoying,
Tumblr media
but you may understand why he might think some stuff, how he does stuff. He gets trust on Asahi to even avoid overwork her, and to work in a way he can make her proud (specially last episode). At the end you learn to like him.
Hikaru is interesting to me, he’s a kind of tsundere fan of Niyodo; I don’t care about this point though. There’s an episode where we have context how he became an Asahi’s fan, and then an idol, and even how he got her death’s news. But my interest is how he became a fan, because my emotional state was probably a bit similar to his; I don’t want to put here personal stuff, but feeling empty, and not having such energy to even go to school,
Tumblr media
and then having your heart filled with that magic idols give, is pretty important.
Tumblr media
“We want the fruity level” you might think (yes, i think it is important to add this on every post). OKAY! The point here is the work Yoshino puts into not becoming a soloist, is not only because of his own good against his stage panic; he says it. Besides that, Hikaru is like a tsundere Niyodo’s fan, he even blushes a bit hard at one point.
Tumblr media
The fruity level is “meh”, but exists.
With all said, it isn't the best anime, has one of the bestests girls, touches some light topics in an interesting way, gives a good laugh, and is casual.
I give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.
Tumblr media
But it is recommendable, at least to be all “awwwww” about Asahi being a ball of cuteness and love for being an idol.

if you want: some insight on Japanese underground idol groups and idol group wotakus / or you’re a wotaku yourself and wanna sympathise a bit / comedy / pretty and cute idol girls uwu / a possible really fun time if you vibe with the tone of the show and its humour
Now, first of all I need to state that while I’ve more than enough experience with idol culture, I follow K-pop and not J-pop, which seems to have quite a few differences from what I’ve seen. So, I apologize if I make any mistakes.
Second, some terms that are good to know for this anime: the “Budokan” mentioned in the title of the anime is a big sports stadium which also holds concerts. Naturally, the only groups who can perform there are ones who would be more or less guaranteed to fill up all seats in the arena and thus performing there is a huge goal set by any idol group (see: the K-pop groups I follow who’ve also made a debut in Japan often dream about performing in the Tokyo Dome). Then we’ve “chika idols” which as I understand are underground idols. Basically a term for small groups who either perform outside or have a quite small venue (usually on the basement floor). Finally, the term most often used by the anime is “wota” which is just short for wotaku. From a quick research, wotaku seems to have no difference from “otaku” and is only written with a “w” because the Japanese writing is in Katakana and is written with “ヲ (wo)“ while otaku is written with Hiragana using “オ (o)”. Also, we’ve the anime “Wotaku no koi wa muzukashi” where wotaku is also used but with the exact same meaning as otaku. I’m talking about this so much because the anime implies that “wota” is only a term for otakus who’re into Japanese idol groups. It seems that outside of Japan, wota does seem to hold this meaning nowadays (I don’t know if the same is true for them) but I just wanted to talk about this cause I thought it was interesting.
So, our story’s protagonist is Eripiyo, a 20yo woman who accidentally stumbles upon a chika group’s outside performance. This group is ChamJam, sporting 7 members with completely different personalities and appeals. Eripiyo falls head over wota heels for one of the members from first glance. This member is Maina.
Fast forward a little bit and Eripiyo has been transformed into a super wota. Maina’s representative colour (an often used gimmick with idol groups) is salmon pink and as she only has one piece of clothing in that colour (I’m going to guess it’s her middle school track jersey) she refuses to wear anything else but that. She has hit up a friendship with two others, Kumasa who is kind of a wota veteran and Motoi who is the complete opposite. (I’m going to be using the term “bias” for “favourite member” as we do in K-pop circles cause it’s shorter) Kumasa’s long time bias is Reo, the center and most popular member of ChamJam. Motoi’s is Sorane, an also quite popular member. While Eripiyo’s is Maina...who has one fan. That being Eripiyo.
This is especially awkward during the handshake events, After the performance, fans can buy X number of CDs with their biases covers for which they get handshake tickets, 1 usually being for 5 seconds. Seeing Maina standing there with no one in her line is really... depressing. Eripiyo obviously tries to rectify the situation by buying EVERY single album of Maina’s and yet, these 2 can’t have a proper conversation even with that time. Maina is shy and has a hard time speaking up which Eripiyo takes as her feeling awkward so she talks her head off the entire time. This leads to my least favourite trope of “misunderstandings caused by not speaking clearly enough”. Thankfully, none of it leads to drama and is more just a set-up for funny situations (but I still hate it!).
Honestly, the humour gets quite repetitive after a while, most of it just being recycled from the first few episodes. Eripiyo is also going to be a very hit-or-miss character. She is either hilarious or she will get on your nerves very quickly. Luckily the anime ended before that happened to me but her constant screeching was oof, too much.
After a few episodes, they start showing more of the ChamJam members and their behind the scenes of their idol lives. They painted the most realistic scene for me, with them sometimes not getting along or getting pissed off over not being more popular. Most of it though, was cute and fun and 2 of the members are veryyyy strongly “hinted” to be in a relationship (we just don’t see them kiss but they’re together y’all).
For a fellow idol fan (although on the more saner side thankfully), it was interesting to see the differences in the 2 idol cultures. Also, sometimes I feel like screeching over a single picture of my bias as Eripiyo and I’ve seen the behaviour of the 3 main wotas in K-pop communities before so I kinda sympathise with them.
“Oshibudo” is a good anime overall. The animation, designs and the colour pallette are excellent (except for those...very few CGI shots that are seriously one of the worst made character models I’ve ever seen). The music is fun, there’s a wide variety of characters and if you’re a fellow idol stan, you’ll probably find a bias for yourself in ChamJam as well. The humour and the subject matter are what can make or break this anime for its viewers. I’d definitely suggest watching episode 1 if you’re even slightly interested. The tone for the rest of the show is all there so you can make a quick decision based on it.

Winter Anime 2020 Reviews: brought to you by quarantine
aw shit look who’s got the time to do some of these again yeah that’s right it’s me
22/7
Tumblr media
For 11/12 of its runtime this was an astonishingly forced exercise in hacky tragic backstory that thoroughly answers the question of what happens when assembly line jobbers jump on the already rickety KyoAni bandwagon. So I was ready to give it a well deserved meme score of 3.14/10. Then it remembered it actually had a gimmick and managed to completely fail at that as well, with one of the most thematically misguided endings I can think of. Oh well, if nothing else I laughed. 2/10
Asteroid in Love
Tumblr media
Well, it’s competent and inoffensive. What else can I say? I guess it’s pretty amusing how blatant the gay marriage implications get by the end, but that’s not really, you know, quality all by its own (and Harukana Receive does it better). It’s also weird how its first season clearly ends at episode 9 and it just quickly does a second one in the time it has left. Apart from that it’s a slightly above-average Kiraralike with good character moments but a real drought of content (note: dropping exposition on your topic isn’t content) in the middle. Fun enough, but really doesn’t leave me wanting more. 6/10
Dorohedoro
Tumblr media
This had much potential to suck but then it didn’t. The biggest surprise was that Dorohedoro is a comedy; a splatter comedy with a core story worth taking seriously, yes, but this is not horror, or mystery, or even action, even if it has all those elements at points. And it manages to be consistently funny. The other big surprise is that the nonsense really does start to come together and is meaningful where it counts, so it has much better worldbuilding than most. Looks really good too - you might take exception to the CG, but it allowed MAPPA to make the rest look great so it’s overall still a plus. Definitely needs a sequel though, because the plot seems to just get started and then it ends like there’s an episode next week. 8/10
ID: INVADED
Tumblr media
Ei Aoki’s Inception fanfic turned out very nice, with neat visuals, cool characters and a story that comes together in the end. I mean, come on, it’s an anime where Kenjiro Tsuda literally talks people to death, how can I not like it. It’s not perfect; it’s stuck with some pacing problems, strangely superfluous side characters and ultimately less ambition than it could (maybe even should) have. But it’s also weird in a good way and moderately thoughtful without being pretentious about it. 8/10
If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die
Tumblr media
Romantic comedy? Eh, maybe not quite. Funny riffing on wota dumbassery without being mean-spirited about it? Yep. Oshibudo gets the tone (the critical aspect in a show like this) right and it actually ranks fairly high simply as an idol show when that’s not even the point, which is really surprising. It’s just very charming, even if a little simple. 8/10
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
Tumblr media
So everyone’s losing their shit over how great Eizouken is and I’m just like nah, man. Not that it’s truly bad, it certainly has its fun moments and undeniably cool animation at times. But it really says a lot when in a show supposedly all about how amazing creativity is, the no-fun-allowed producer is the only character I like - Kanamori is indeed great, shame about Nerdlinger and Plot Device though. And it’s full of the kind of standard boomer animation bromides that just make me think “well, if Ghibli is supposed to be so great, why am I watching this instead of the real thing?” It also has notably poor and uncreative use of background music, which wouldn’t irk me as much if it wasn’t lecturing on the topic. At this point I’m fairly certain that I simply don’t like Yuasa’s style much, no matter what he does. 6/10
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story
Tumblr media
So I’m watching the “final” episode of this and I realize that I care about this random, poorly explained fanservice fight between Mami and Sayaka much more than I care about any of the characters this show is ostensibly about. And that’s pretty much Magireco in a nutshell: It has very little of its own, what it does have is split among way too many video game characters, and it’s at its best when it’s just being dumb and bombastic or lazily replicating the style of Madoka. It’s definitely not good (and the things it does to the Madoka lore are double ungood), but as long as you keep in mind that it’s just meaningless Madoka-ish things, it’s barely entertaining enough. 5/10
Natsunagu!
Tumblr media
Natsunagu turned out to be a pleasant (if very cheap) short film that’s severely compromised by broken up into weekly 3-minute chunks. Episodes that short can work, but not for material that depends on atmosphere and character engagement. I can only assume I’d like it more if I watched it all in one go. 5/10
Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It
Tumblr media
This one started out as a one-note romantic comedy with the rare novel note, which then got more and more tired as it went on, and the introduction of decidedly less novel characters didn’t help. But by the end it recovered somewhat from not being much good at comedy anymore by being actually pretty good at paying off a romance, which is maybe even rarer. Remove bear though, what the hell. 6/10
Somali and the Forest Spirit
Tumblr media
Somali just kept doing its thing (which is dadfeels/protect the blob). Still can’t think of another show so intensely laser-focused on that one thing, to the point they’re constructing an entire fantasy universe around it. I liked the fluffy/introspective parts a lot more so than the grimdark/”let’s get Somali into some danger so dad can rescue her” ones, but at least the former ones are more common overall, and I understand that both are important for the other one to work. So yeah, good show, even if I wish it used the big guns less often. 7/10
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
Tumblr media
I wasn’t too hot on this one at first (apart from the looks, which were always really cool), but I have to say it has won me over by the end. It has likeable and occasionally funny characters, some meat to its setting and a mildly interesting streak of intrigue running though it. Of course it also doesn’t really answer anything, but I’m satisfied. 7/10
Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki S2
Tumblr media
Peer pressure presents: the other tourism short of the season, ft. material that fits the format. While it’s still not really good, it’s an improvement over S1. Mainly because it stops trying to extract humor from the characters themselves and gets back to dropping the hot #nagoyatruths, which are the thing I’m here for. 6/10

Final Thoughts - If My Favorite Pop Idol Made it to the Budokan, I Would Die
What if iDOLM@STER were a romantic comedy?
Okay, it’s not quite that simple, but as the season went on, OshiBudo evolved from a weird little curiosity into a deep-dive of the relationship between idol and fan, through an idealized story that would have fallen flat on its face if the main character had been genderswapped.
I’m being a little harsh there, but I honestly really enjoyed this look at idol culture and what it’s like to support a small-time group, rather than the incredibly idealistic stories we see often of girls getting to make their big-time debuts after only a few months and rocketing to stardom. It’s a big, crowded world out there, and the idol industry is known to be controlling and difficult to break into. Wake Up, Girls! also explored some of this, but here, we get a more memorable cast and a boatload of romantic subtext, as the least popular member of the group tries to wrangle with her romantic feelings towards the protagonist Eripiyo, her only dedicated fan. (See what I meant about the genderflip?)
The thing that ultimately lets OshiBudo down is the production. At the beginning, it’s probably the worst that Studio 8bit has produced in years, and although it pulls itself together as it goes, the early parts of the show have a lot of choppy animation and extended scenes of non-action. It’s the reverse of their last project, Stars Align, and it’s a very strange thing to see. (I dunno, maybe their “A” team is busy working on the second seasons of Mahouka and Slime, both due this year.) I also should note that this is not a show to watch if you need consistent forward momentum in your romantic relationship - we’re not much farther at the end than we were when we started, despite a very strong final episode - and the show is content to deliver excellent comedy at the expense of that momentum, because this is probably the funniest show I watched all season. (And that’s a long list.)
8/10!

OshiBudo Manga Author Says Heroine Maina's Name is NOT a Pun of "Minor"
Since the TV anime adaptation of Auri Hirao's underground idol-themed comedy manga If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I would Die, OshiBudo for short, started airing in Japan on January 10, there has been one speculation among viewers. They have thought the main heroine Maina Ichii's first name may be a pun of "minor" because she is the least popular member in the idol unit ChamJam.
Then, the manga author clearly denied it on Twitter after the broadcast of the TV anime's fourth episode on TBS last night. She writes, "I haven't been asked about it, so it's too late to mention this, but I just took Maina's name from my favorite girl. It's not a pun of 'minor' at all...."

Svelati, assieme ad una prima immagine promozionale, i principali membri dello staff al lavoro presso lo studio SEVEN ARCS (Arte, TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You), sulla serie animata tratta dal manga “Blue Period” di Tsubasa Yamaguchi, il cui debutto in Giappone è previsto nel corso del 2021.
L’adattamento è sotto la supervisione di Koji Masunari (Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Welcome to the Space Show, Kamichu!) e alla regia troviamo Katsuya Asano (Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS). La sceneggiatura sta venendo curata da Reiko Yoshida (La Forma della Voce, Bakuman, Non Non Biyori), mentre il character design è in mano a Tomoyuki Shitaya (Bakuman, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, OshiBudo).
