Ukraine hopes for more evacuations from besieged steel mill in Mariupol
Tumblr media
Ukrainian officials and the United Nations held out hope for more evacuations from the bombed-out steel mill in Mariupol as scores of civilians reached relative safety after enduring weeks of shelling that targeted city's last pocket of resistance.
While the evacuees savoured hot food, clean clothing and other comforts that were denied to them while underground, Russian forces on Tuesday began storming the plant, where some Ukrainian fighters were still holed up.
Thanks to the evacuation effort over the weekend, 101 people including women, the elderly, and 17 children, the youngest 6 months old emerged from the bunkers under the Azovstal steelworks to see the daylight after two months, said Osnat Lubrani, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine.
One evacuee said she went to sleep at the plant every night afraid she wouldn't wake up.

Insgesamt seien 127 Menschen in Saporischschja angekommen.

In perhaps what was a first in Australia, representatives from four UN different UN agencies spoke together at a public event on their work in the Pacific.  The representatives, Resident Coordinator Osnat Lubrani from UNDP; Sheldon Yett, UNICEF; Bruce Campbell, UNFPA; and, Nicolas Burniat, Deputy at UNWomen, spoke as one on the new UN Pacific Strategy 2018 – 2022 and how it would support Pacific countries in attaining the SDGs.  The seminar which included an outline of the Strategy and then a panel discussion moderated by the UNIC Canberra Director, provided specific examples of how the UN aims to meet the six outcome goals it contains.  Discussion generated between the panellists and from numerous audience questions ranged from the importance of data collection, gender issues, climate change, health and welfare, and governance, all key aspects of the UN’s work and to development in the region.

"The UN is fully mobilised to help save Ukrainian lives and to assist those in need," UN in Ukraine Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Osnat Lubrani wrote on Twitter. 'Difficult weeks' With the war, now into a third month and claiming thousands of lives, Kyiv has admitted that Russian forces are making gains in the east, capturing a string of villages in the Donbas region. The first phase of Russia's invasion failed to reach Kyiv or overthrow Zelensky's government after encountering stiff Ukrainian resistance reinforced with Western weapons. The campaign has since refocused on seizing the east and south of the country while increasingly using long-range missiles against west and central Ukraine. Ukraine's Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov conceded the country faces "extremely difficult weeks" as Moscow tries "to inflict as much pain as possible". Russia's defence ministry said Thursday its forces had destroyed two arms and ammunition depots in eastern and southern Ukraine overnight with "high-precision missiles". Its air force targeted 67 Ukrainian military sites while air defence systems destroyed a Ukrainian fighter jet in the Lugansk region, the ministry added. Russia has also in recent days targeted Western-supplied arms, as the United States and Europe increasingly heed Zelensky's call for heavier firepower. In a defiant speech Wednesday, Putin said if Western forces intervene in Ukraine and create "unacceptable threats", they will face a "lightning-fast" military response.
