Health Check

This may be too much, or maybe it won’t be.

I’m super proud of myself. I went to doctor today for my allergies. Now, I do believe in doctors and all the great things they do. Problem is, growing up I never had health insurance. If I needed to go to the doctor I had to be something serious, otherwise we would just take care of it at home. Not to mention, I’ve been to allergenists before, all with different solutions. Never has anything worked. Usually they prescribe me the same OTC medication I’ve been taking for years.

Today I finally got answers.

For those that think it’s all in your head, it’s not. And for those that still believe it’s just a runny nose, it’s much worse. It’s not sleeping for a week straight because you’re suffocating. It’s not getting to eat the apples you love because they give you hives in your mouth. It’s not going to the gym and taking care of yourself because you can't breathe or get any sleep.

Here’s my thing lately. It’s been much worse than normal. It starts with no sleep. I lay down and my pathways close. A warm compress doesn’t help the swelling and over the counter drugs just don’t do it. So I’m on severe cold medicine and allergy medicine. Im terrified to take Benedyl or z-quill in case it doesn’t put me to sleep but makes me more tired than I already am. The flip to that is I’m also avoiding caffeine and Sudafed because of my already sleeping issues. I’m also avoiding every possible allergen. I’m showering twice a day which is terrible for your skin and hair. I’m eating honey twice a day- which probably doesn’t do anything for allergies but what can it hurt? Taking my pills. Rincing my eyes and nose with saline twice a day. My sweet tooth gets the better of me and I eat garbage because fruit is off the table. I can’t hike or walk. I can’t go to the gym because I can’t breathe. Hallucinations from sleep deprivation start around day 3. Luckily, with sleep issues from the past, I knew this was coming and I was able to power through even at work. The sinus pressure creates head aches. My ears have cracked and blocked. I hear like I just got home from a rock concert. I can’t tast food because my entire sense of smell is gone. My mouth and eyes itch constantly and hives come and go. And to make it even better my blood pressure is through the roof for someone my age and size but again, no gym. Eating healthy is damn near impossible due to my allergies.

My frustration level was super high. But today my doctor listened. She tested me and I am moving forward with allergy shots. I am so excited. Especially because these shots are more than a cover up or symptom reliever. They should act as a semi permanent cure. The shots are made for my body. The first three months I’ll be taking the shots twice a week and it will dwindle down from there over the next three years. The good news is, I am not actually allergic to say apples. I am however allergic to the pollen from apple trees which closely mimics the protein on the apples. The shots should also get rid of all of my food allergies for this reason. So, in short I am very thankful for a doctor that finally listened. I am glad to be moving forward and out of this stage of my life finally. I am excited to hopefully be enjoying the outdoors by as early as this fall. I am happy to be able to get healthy again.
