what are some bands you’d recommend that are similar to kittie?<3333
OTEP 100% my favorite album is sevas tra (steer clear of their newer stuff tbh) but her lyricism was PEAK back in the day and they have a similar sound and similar themes too. i like my ruin a lot too and it follows the theme of girl metal and tairrie b kicks ass shes AWESOME. let me think, straight line stitch is also incredible, we are pigs had a collaboration with morgan lander that’s amazing, kidneytheives arent necessarily similar but still worth a shot if you enjoy kittie, a couple of babes in toyland songs (ariel, istigkeit, 22), you might also enjoy scarling!! oh and butcher babies and jinjer ofc :3 bands fronted by men that are also worth mentioning are saliva, slaves on dope, psychea, glassjaw, coal chamber, and static x

5 songs, 3 outfits
i was tagged by @glitchinginthegarden! thank you, i was lowkey hoping i'd get another tag for this 👁👁 Rules: post 5 songs associated with your OC, followed by 3 outfits they would wear. tagging: @streetkid-named-desire | @bishicat | @wanderingaldecaldo | @kharonion
i'm gonna do this for V AGAIN because... yea
I'M SCUM
I sing at fascists 'til my head comes off I am Dennis Skinner's molotov I'm lefty, I'm soft I'm minimum wage job I am a mongrel dog I'm just another cog I'm scum
This snowflake's an avalanche
this one is just here for the punk sound and message
THE REFLECTING GOD
Each thing I show you is a piece of my death No salvation, no forgiveness [...] I went to God just to see And I was looking at me Saw Heaven and Hell were lies When I'm God, everyone dies
everything that happened to v has led her to this point (her death) AND every time she shares a memory with johnny or gives him control over their body she inches closer to said death PLUS she's resentful a lot so if she was given *real* power she wouldn't be the change in the world she wants to be (also this song just goes hard in general)
PRETTY FLY (FOR A WHITE GUY)
Now he's getting a tattoo yeah, he's getting ink done He asked for a 13, but they drew a 31 Friends say he's trying too hard and he's not quite hip But in his own mind he's the, he's the dopest trip
the offspring is one of those bands that exist in my canon and v is a big fan of them, she has a 31 tattoo'd on her arm!
MARCH OF THE MARTYRS
The devil may care but I don't No masters, no gods, no laws, no soul I'm insignificant, I'm shiny & unique I'm a freak, I'm a fuck-up, I'm suffering [...] My heart starts collapsing My soul starts reacting I'm back in the fire again I'm burning & bleeding The parasites are feeding It's me versus me & all of them I am whore, holy, loved, lonely Murdering the others I have been I am barren, fruitful, bored but really useful A sinner seeking manic martyrdom [...] Bred for the slaughter The march of the martyrs
otep is the band i picked to stand in for v's own band and this song is perhaps the best example as to why she feels like she has been born only to be abused by her parents, that's the reason she wrote those lyrics originally but when the whole relic thing happened another layer was added: a few times during their time together v feels like she was fated to end up with johnny, like no matter her choices she was always gonna end up exactly where she is right now and it frustrates her. (there are a few reasons why she thinks that way but to put it simply: there are too many parallels between them, so much in fact that it cant be a coincidence - i've been meaning to actually write a piece about this but you know how it is LMAO)
no full outfits this time but these are crucial anyway

OTEP Shares New Single 'Ostracized'
OTEP, the band led by singer, poet, illustrator, author and activist Otep Shamaya, will release a new studio album, "The God Slayer", on September 15 via Cleopatra. The follow-up to 2018's "Kult 45" offers up a mix of inspired original tracks as well as transformative takes on chart-topping hits from a variety of influences, including pop, rap and grunge, by such artists as Eminem, Billie Eilish, SLIPKNOT, Lil Peep and Olivia Rodrigo.
The LP's second single, "Ostracized", is the first original song from the upcoming album. Shamaya harnesses the power of her raw, unapologetic emotion and passion-filled poetry, which act as the driving forces behind "Ostracized". This dynamic musical masterpiece was forged in the fire of unadulterated rage, with an edge sharpened by an ear-shattering blend of high screams, death growls, and guttural vocals, galvanized by gritty guitar, pounding drums, and a face-melting solo, courtesy of VIGIL OF WAR guitarist Kiki Wong.
Not only is Shamaya a revered musical figure, known for her intrepid blending of metal genres and hip-hop, as exemplified on her notorious 2002 debut album "Sevas Tra", but she's also amassed an enormous following based on her fearless performances and confrontational, spiritually tinged lyrics. It's that combination of radical artistry and galvanizing message that the world desperately needs now more than ever, and OTEP is ready to answer the call.
"You Should See Me In A Crown" was the lead single from the 2018 debut album of another controversial female figure who cut across musical and social norms to carve out an identity all her own. That artist is, of course, Billie Eilish, and OTEP's cover version is no mere homage to a young acolyte but rather a radical reimagining of the song that mines all of its dark sonic complexity as well as its bold lyrical message, transforming it into the kind of modern metal epic that nobody does better than OTEP.
As Shamaya herself puts it: "To me the song is a warning against cultural reduction, biased underestimation and the volatile anti-Newtonian reaction of judging someone before you know their true power."

I made literally zero friends that first year. As the new girl, I was an easy target, and people mocked me for everything from my acne to one very traumatic accident involving my period, which I didn’t know was coming until it had seeped through to my cafeteria chair. Offering me a maxipad in public became kind of a running joke among some of the popular girls. I started to hate everybody, and I latched on to their outward appearances as a symbol of how terrible they were, not even realizing the obvious parallel between my attitude about them and theirs about me. In my teen-angst-riddled mind, their preppy, pastel-hued, homogenous clothing choices were expressions of their bland, homogenous psyches. At the time—this was 2000—I didn’t know there were blogs or internet communities where I could share my frustration with like-minded teenagers across the world. My parents were pretty strict, and I wasn’t allowed online, except occasionally for schoolwork. So I took my angst to the only hang-out spot available to a 15-year-old in Westerville: the mall.
I had never heard of Hot Topic before I saw that disobedient red font standing out among the sedate logos of all the other stores, daring me to walk through its sewer-pipe-style entrance.
I took up the challenge, and was immediately enchanted. First, there were the employees: to someone who couldn’t find even one other misfit at school to share my weirdness with, they were downright inspirational. I especially remember the manager, Jody, in all of her deathrock glory: artfully destroyed fishnet tights; platform boots with buckles numbering in the dozens; pin-thin, meticulously drawn on eyebrows. I aspired to dress—and live!—with that much creativity someday.
The next thing I noticed was the wall of officially licensed band tees that spanned genres from pop-punk to hip-hop to thrash metal, and they sold CDs and vinyl, too—it was literally a subculture supermarket, and in Westerville, that was nothing short of a miracle. Without internet access, it wasn’t easy for a sheltered suburban kid to discover a band like NOFX—I didn’t have an older sister to tell me about them, or an effortlessly cool friend, or a great local record store (I can’t even remember there being a record store, beyond Best Buy).
I was ecstatic about what I bought during that first excursion: a white button-up with a pre-attached red-and-black tie with safety pins in it. What did I know? I hadn’t even heard of thrifting, and anyway, I would never have thought to put those elements together myself. Hot Topic did the thinking for me, and I welcomed the help. The store was a guiding light, leading me through an assortment of options for my new, disgruntled identity.
Was I a punk? A week of listening to Punk-O-Rama: Vol. 6 quickly disabused me of that notion. Bad Religion’s “I Want to Conquer the World” is an objectively great song, but nothing about the music really resonated with me. (I loved compilation CDs—there was no better tool for figuring out what I liked.) Was I a metalhead? For a while, sure. I flipped through a magazine at the store—I can’t remember the name of it now, but it was like Tiger Beat for hard-rock enthusiasts, featuring interviews and pull-out photos of Otep and Korn. My late freshman/early sophomore years were spent plastering my bedroom walls with posters of Kittie and obsessively phoning Total Request Live to vote for “Falling Away From Me.” I wore giant band tees with wide-legged JNCO jeans, and a spiked necklace that I never took off, not even in the shower. During that period, the caustic rage of this music was my only solace from the loneliness and boredom I experienced in my school and my town; I headbanged alone in my room to “Paperdoll” and felt like Morgan Lander was speaking directly to me.
By junior year, though, not even lyrics like “Now her soul is dead / Now her body’s raw / WASH AWAY HER PAIN” could save me (nor, indeed, wash away my pain). My anger congealed into a dark depression, and even though by then I had a couple of friends at school and even a boyfriend, I struggled with self-loathing. My mom and I fought all the time. She didn’t approve of my wardrobe or my interests, and I suspected she might be reading my journal, which made me stop writing in it. Each day became just something to get through.
Maybe it sounds strange, but the only thing that made me feel better was finding a sartorial aesthetic that perfectly expressed my inner sadness. I figured if I was living with these feelings, I might as well revel in them. During my regular visits to Hot Topic, I was drawn to clothes that were comfortably confrontational, like Lip Service’s fishnet tops and corseted dresses and Tripp NYC’s bondage pants. I fell in love with a dress I wore to the homecoming dance—it was maroon with black lace, gesturing toward a romantic melancholy.
I didn’t realize that there was an entire cultural scene based on the kind of gloominess I was feeling—had been for decades, in fact. I don’t know how I came into possession of the Cure’s Disintegration—maybe I heard Marilyn Manson mention it in an interview, or found it among Hot Topic’s stash of Good Charlotte CDs, underneath the display of Joy Division T-shirts. But that album was exactly what I had been searching for. When Robert Smith desperately sang/shouted, “It’s easier for me to get closer to heaven / Than ever feel whole again,” I heard my intense longing for something in his voice. I immediately went to the record store in Columbus, of which Westerville is a suburb, to buy the Goth Box, which introduced me to bands like Christian Death and Alien Sex Fiend, and I grabbed hold of my new identity and ran with it. I wrote long poems on my LiveJournal, channeling my pain into gibberish that made sense only to me: “Tenderize the rarest bones and die / But let the grass grow where the flesh meets the sand.” I wore all black—black clothes, black nail polish, black eyeliner—and whenever I saw someone similarly attired we’d make eye contact for a split second, and it felt like a secret handshake, like I was less alone in the world.
When I turned 18, I started going to Outland, central Ohio’s biggest (only?) goth club, where I could dance all night to Sisters of Mercy, Queenadreena, New Order, Crüxshadows, and Adult, in a room full of poeple who looked and felt like I did. I had finally found a community. I made friends, I moved out of my parents’ house, and I felt less isolated and depressed.
Sometimes I’d run into Jody, the old Hot Topic manager, there. She remembered me from the store, and even though she probably knew I bought those clothes before I knew what they were trying to signify, I never felt like she judged me as a “poser.” Not everyone is savvy or self-assured enough, especially in high school, to know exactly who they want to be, nor how to be that person. I was, I don’t deny, an average suburban white kid looking for entry-level subversion, and Hot Topic supplied it. And for that I will be forever grateful.

Hey, so, I'm trying to learn German, and I'd like to find some German music/artists to listen to, just as a sort of "casual" way to practice outside of class. Thing is Apple Music fucking sucks and lumps everything not American, Latin American, or British into "worldwide" which is the worst """"genre"""" of music ever invented and I can't believe they still do it like that. All I can find in their pre-made playlists is Deutschpop and Deutscher hip-hop, and I'm just not that into modern pop and semi-picky when it comes to hip-hop (just because, at least in the states, I've heard so much misogynistic garbage that I really only listen to women hip-hop/rap artists now 🙃 I know it's not the genre's fault lol (nor is it unique to hip-hop/rap) it's honestly just to save myself a lot of headaches when browsing new artists)
ANYWAY. Anyone have suggestions? I'm open to pretty much any genre, and I do actually mean it when I say that. Except, like, dubstep or screamo I guess. Those are Too Much.
Here's a list of (mostly) English-speaking artists I listen to, for an idea of my music taste ig:
Andrew Bird Bob Moses Caravan Palace Daft Punk Glass Animals Heilung Hozier The Japanese House Otep Puscifer SKÁLD Tame Impala
Those are the artists I regularly listen to/have most if not all of their music saved, but I also have a crap ton of songs taken off albums where that’s the one song (or one of a few songs) that I like, and I don’t listen to much (if anything) else by that artist. I made a youtube comp of those (if you're photosensitive in any way, just... idk alt-tab if you want to listen to the Spider-verse ones, the visualizers for Across the Spider-verse are kinda nasty in that regard):
Note the one (1) German song on there, 5 Sekunden Vakuum by Marwin Balsters. The lyrics are nothing special but honestly it's a bop. So anything like that, yeah, I'll take it.
I'm probably overcomplicating this, just give me German music with a good beat and sexy bass and lyrics that aren't racist/sexist/etc. lmao and I'll probably be happy JHSDBFJCHB
I know this is a long shot, considering my target audience on this blog is... not majority German-speakers....... and I have no idea how to tag this. But I figured it was worth a shot.

re: your tags, listen. 'inherited ipod' is always the most formative music ever. when i was like 12 i inherited my cousin's ipod full of otep, papa roach, linkin park, slipknot etc etc all the essential nu metal bands of the 00's. i was twelve years old writing out the lyrics to 'confrontation' by otep on my white converse and my parents wondered how i turned out an anarchist
i have never had an original experience in my life bc THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME
but my sister fell down the emo to screamo pipeline and was a full-on warped tour kid. like i vividly remember being 10 and being PISSSED that i couldn't go with her and my cousins to warped tour. and then i went when i was 13 and became a warped tour kid myself
like that music really was formative in every aspect of my life huh? isn't it nuts to think abt it like that? like my best friend from middle school is still my best friend and we met bc we were both emo kids. its just nuts.
shoutout to our older siblings and cousins for permanently altering our brain chemistry and helping mold us into people lol

🐶🙃🎤 for the ask game!!!
🐶 Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?
I like dogs SLIGHTLY more than cats because they’re down for literally anything. Also I’m slightly less allergic to them because if they have short fur, dog fur picks up less dust than cat fur from the floors.
🙃 What’s a weird fact that you know?
UHH………. I’m always so bad at answering this question because I know many weird facts but can never think of them on the spot. But that said, did you know that Lambert in the movie Alien is canonically a trans woman according to her file, which is briefly shown in Aliens? (The picture is super blurry but a transcript of the part that addresses her as being trans reads as follows, “Subject is Despin Convert at birth (male to female). So far no indication of suppressed trauma related to gender alteration.” Of course they use slightly different in universe language, but “despin convert” is taken to indicate being transgender in the future this is supposed to take place in.)
Tumblr media
🎤 Is there a song you know all the lyrics to?
MANY. I used to be in a bit of a garage band with a couple friends. My voice broke after a surgery, so I can’t sing as much as before and my range is trashed, but some of my favorite things to sing are Lake Pontchartrain by Ludo, Eet the Children & Milk of Regret by Otep (even though I can no longer scream 😭), Providence by Poor Man’s Poison, Zydrate Anatomy from Repo! The Genetic Opera, Cast No Shadow by Brown Bird, Mustard Seed by Damion Suomi & the Minor Prophets, and What Love Can Heartbreak Allow by Ben Caplan. Also the entire Murder By Death discography 😂

OTEP Covers BILLIE EILISH's 'You Should See Me In A Crown'
It's been nearly five years since the release of OTEP's last full-length album, the crushing "Kult 45", and since then the world has gone to complete…well, let's just say it's become the kind of world that desperately needs the band led by singer, poet, illustrator, author and activist Otep Shamaya.
Today marks the release of OTEP's first new recorded material since 2018, and it may come as a surprise.
Last September, Shamaya told the 96.7 KCAL-FM program "Wired In The Empire" that OTEP was putting the finishing touches on its ninth album for a tentative early 2023 release. "We've just finished mixing, and we're about to go into mastering," she said. "And then it's really up to the label to decide when they're gonna release it, what they're gonna release, which single they're gonna release. I have some say as to, you know, what I recommend, but ultimately it lies on them."
Regarding the songwriting process for OTEP's new album, Shamaya said: "This record actually was written with a couple of different songwriters, which I was really excited to work with. 'Kult 45' was my last album, which is four years old now. It's insane to believe that it's been four years, but it has. When I went back in the studio, the band had sort of dispersed at that point — everybody was trying to make a living and trying to find other jobs — and so I just went to the producer and we sat down and we found some really, really talented, creative people. And even though I've been doing this for a long time and have accomplished a lot — at least I think I have — I really work best with mentors. I like people that are, I feel, creatively better than I am so that I can have this sort of spiritual intercourse between all of us where we're sort of sharing ideas and I'm inspiring them and they're inspiring me."
Throughout the span of her career, Shamaya has been an undeniable force in bringing awareness via various acclaimed mediums to social and political injustices felt by various communities and subcultures. For years, publications such as Revolver magazine have lauded Shamaya for "following in the footsteps of outspoken musicians from folk singer Woody Guthrie to RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's Zach de la Rocha, dubbing her "one of music's catalysts for social change".
OTEP's latest album, the aforementioned "Kult 45", was released in 2018. The LP was recorded at The Lair in Los Angeles, completely utilizing the same equipment used for OTEP's first album, "Sevas Tra" (down to Shamaya's vocal microphone, a SHURE Beta 58),in order to create a sound reminiscent of their roots. "Kult 45" was produced by the band, with assistant engineering from Larry Goetz, Nicolas Schilke and Lizzy Ostro.

„IOG would love to share the stage withKorn, Avatar, In This Moment, Slipknot, Halestorm, Sepultura”
„IOG would love to share the stage withKorn, Avatar, In This Moment, Slipknot, Halestorm, Sepultura” - https://metalindex.hu/2023/08/24/iog-would-love-to-share-the-stage-withkorn-avatar-in-this-moment-slipknot-halestorm-sepultura/ -
When, where and by whom was the band formed?
Illusions of Grandeur is a Hard Rock/Metal Theatrical band, IOG’s music is a mix of influences from modern metal to classic old school metal and hard rock formed in 2015. IOG’s influences range from: In This Moment, KORN, Altar Bridge, Evanescence and Avatar to Led Zeppelin and The Who.
Maggie and CM formed Illusions of Grandeur in 2015 after they had been touring in a rock band together for about year or two. The pair realized that an element of entertainment was missing from the show, theatrics. Maggie and CM sat down and planned out what they would want to hear and see at a live show and the styles of music that would best focus that vision. Illusions of Grandeur was born.
What is the philosophy of the band?
The idea of Illusions of Grandeur is to create a world and tell the story of “The Siren” and her journeys. IOG’s love of both history and Greek/Norse Mythology felt that this was the best medium way to create a world for “The Siren Saga.” IOG feels that when listening to music or seeing a live show you should be able to immerse yourself in that moment and take a journey of your own with the band.
What are the most important moments in the band’s journey so far?
Illusions of Grandeur’s 2019 tour in the Ukraine stands out as one of the best tours, playing to new audiences all across the country. We hope to return to the Ukraine and play for our fans and friends again sometime Soon!
What is the process of creating your music?
Illusions of Grandeur’s main music writer is Bassist CM Carroll with lyrics and melodies provided by The Siren. The entire band participates in the arranging and recoding process and each member as songs are produced add elements into it to create the overall song and sound. IOG is continuously writing, normally demoing 30-35 songs per album than finding the songs that carry the story and sound of the record.
