Gnat Cap Mishap

I like linked universe a healthy amount so i wanted to write something for it. where’s 5 nights at sekai you may ask uhh idk how to write an office segment i’m gonna be real with you i just know the ending and “saki sits in an office and clicks buttons” sounds kinda not fun to write anyway have four getting hit with the shrunko beam

It was meant to be a very simple test of one of Four’s items. A test just to make sure his Gnat Cap still worked in case of emergency. Becoming small to slip away from an enemy was a tactic Four had done plenty of times, and he wanted to keep his options open even now.

What Four had not expected was the cap deciding to stop working. While he was still small.

The sudden situation had split his head with stress. “WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?!” His Red side asked, and while Four couldn’t see it he could imagine Red breaking down and crying right then and there.

“Look, just… just stay calm!” His Green side shouted back, trying to defuse the situation quickly.

His Blue side immediately disagreed. “What is there to be calm about?!” Blue exclaimed angrily. “We’re stuck like this! We don’t know how to fix this! And we’re trapped in the woods!”

Four could hear his final side, his Violet side, sigh. “That last part is easy to fix. We’re not too far from camp. We can easily walk back if we just retrace our steps.”

“That doesn’t fix the other two things!” 

Four crossed his arms, trying to ignore his screaming selves with deep breaths. “I think we should head back to camp. Staying out here isn’t going to help us.” Vio continued. “And if we stay out here any longer, we’re at risk of being attacked by something.”

The idea of being attacked by a squirrel or a cat again didn’t sound pleasing. “But what do we do when we get back there?” Red asked. “If the others see us like this, they’re gonna pick on us!”

“They always pick on us.” Blue snipped at Red.

“But it’ll be even worse now! Now we’re not just short, we’re tiny!” Red replied, incredibly stressed. “What if they step on us? Then we’ll just be dead!”

“We’ll figure something out when we get there!” Green shouted, Four envisioning Green stepping in between Red and Blue. “Vio’s right, we need to get back to camp. We’re not safe staying out here, and the longer we’re out here the more worried the others might get.”

His head slowly began to stop feeling like it was splitting into pieces. “And besides! We’ve got an entire group of people who’ve dealt with weird magic before! If there’s anyone who can figure out why the Gnat Cap stopped working, it’ll definitely be them!”

And so the plan was set. Get back to camp, and see if Four could get the attention of one of the other boys. He pivoted on his heel and immediately began walking back in the direction he came. But as he was walking a thought came into Four’s mind. “Wait… how am I going to do that?” He asked himself aloud. “It’s not like they can hear me from down here.”

Four shook his head. He’d cross that road when he got to it. Best to focus on getting back to camp first.

The forest could be scary while large, monsters hiding behind any corner, capable of jumping out at any time. But while tiny, everything seemed all the scarier. He quickly hid underneath a leaf as a large bird swooped down from above, looking for breakfast and landing where he was previously standing not a few minutes ago.

If he was big, he could just walk towards the bird and the bird would run off. But now Four was the one needing to run. He dropped to his stomach to make the leaf look flatter as he watched the bird peck into the ground for a worm, holding his breath. The bird pecked a bit longer before eventually pulling up a worm and flying off with the worm still squirming in its mouth. He let out a sigh of relief, pushing off the leaf and getting to his feet. “That was close.” 

Four continued the walk, jumping over twigs (which were about his size and felt more like fallen trunks and branches) and skirting around a large puddle about the size of a lake before he could faintly hear people talking. “-Wild I’m trying to be honest with you. You can’t eat that.”

Twilight! Four’s face lit up, recognizing the voice. That meant he was close! He began to run, hoping to get closer to where Twilight’s voice was coming from. As he ran, the voice became louder and Four could hear the rest of the conversation Twilight was having. “Why not? It doesn’t look toxic!” Wild replied.

“Look at the coloring! Anything with that bright of colors is probably going to kill you if you put that in your mouth!” Twilight sounded exasperated. Four couldn’t blame him.

“I disagree! I think those colors are telling me I should eat it!” 

“Wild are you actually being serious right now or are you- No. You know what. I’m just gonna let you see what happens.” 

“Wild, drop the frog.” Time’s authoritarian voice said from much further back that Four could only barely make out.

“Aww….” Wild said, and Four could hear a loud plop! as the assumed frog fell from his grasp.

Wait, that frog would probably eat me, Four realized the second he heard the sound of the Frog hopping towards him. He quickly dove into a nearby bush, lowering himself into a squat as the frog hopped on by without another thought. Once the frog was gone, Four pushed the leaves aside and walked out of the bush, letting out a sigh of relief. “Wild, why were you trying to eat that?” Four mumbled angrily as he hurried towards camp.

He broke into the clearing with ease after the frog incident. Everyone else was there and accounted for. But which one to ask for help? He quickly ran down the list.

The first thing Four needed to check was who was capable of using magic or not. He could place a good guess at who could or couldn’t. Wind was a definite “no”, along with Wild. While the two were talented in their own right, Four doubted either had the skills for this specific situation. The same went for Warriors and also for Sky. 

That left Twilight, Time, Legend and Hyrule. Twilight had his trinket to turn him into a wolf, but Four wouldn’t call him the most adept at magic. So there were 3 left.

Legend would absolutely tease Four for being as short as he was now, but so would everyone else. Plus with all the veteran’s experience, he had probably had something backfire on him more than once. The same would apply for Time, with less of the teasing. Hyrule was the only normal magic caster of the group, the only one capable of healing magic.

It would have to be one of those three. “So how do I get their attention…?” Four mumbled as he walked into the clearing, being mindful of who was walking where. The last thing he needed right now was to become a Four pancake. He ran over to Hyrule, who was casually sitting on the ground. “Hyrule! Hey! Down here!” Four shouted as loud as he could. “It’s Four! I need your help!”

Hyrule couldn’t hear him. “Shit.” Four cursed. Of course he couldn’t hear him! Four was tiny! So was his voice! “I need a new plan…”

But what could his plan be? He needed to get their attention, so what could he do while tiny? Four’s gaze caught on Warriors’s scarf while thinking. “That’s an idea.” He ran away from Hyrule and towards Warriors. Sure, Warriors wasn’t the person Four needed the most to fix the problem, but if he could just get their attention… maybe it could attract the others?

Four jumped up to grab Warriors’s scarf. “All right, I’m coming up!” Four declared, trying to climb up the blue fabric. He pulled himself up as much as he could, the fabric bunching and pulling as Four pulled himself further off the ground. His boots struggled to hold the fabric underneath them, slipping several times before Four’s upper body strength and grip strength just couldn’t hold onto the fabric anymore. He slid himself down the fabric and landed softly on the ground with a loud “hmpf”. 

Climbing was out. But that didn’t mean the scarf was out of options. If he couldn’t shout directly in Warriors’s ear, then he could get another way to catch his attention. He leapt up to grab the end of the scarf, landing back on the ground to wrap part of the tip around his hand. “This better work, I don’t even know how you’ll miss this!” Four grinned and began to circle Warriors while holding the scarf.

Warriors was conversing with Sky while this was all happening. “Do you know where Four is?” He asked. “I know Time said that he was on a walk but… it’s been a while. Do you think something might’ve happened to him?”

Sky chose to stay optimistic. “Four has his sword with him in case of emergency, I’m sure everything’s fine. Maybe he just got lost?”

“I don’t know… Maybe I’m just nervous. I don’t want us to get separated.” 

“If he’s not back in a few minutes why don’t we go look for him?” Sky proposed. “With the two of us, I’m sure we’ll find him.” However, he stopped, trying to prevent himself from laughing. “Though I think you might want to untie yourself first.”

Warriors paused, looking down. His scarf had somehow been wrapped loosely around him. “Huh? When did that happen?” He pulled the scarf off of him, letting it fall back to its normal spot behind him. “Must’ve been the wind.”

Four stumbled as his grasp on the scarf was forcibly removed when Warriors pulled on it. He fell to his hands and knees from the pull, but quickly jumped back to his feet. “I’m not letting you ignore me that easily!” Four declared, hurrying back to the scarf tip. He grabbed it again and began to wrap it around Warriors.

This time, Warriors noticed it as it was happening. “It’s moving again…” He grumbled, swatting the scarf back behind him. Four was sent flying, unbeknownst to Warriors. “Is it possessed or something? From what?”

“It can’t be the wind, there’s no breeze here.” Sky remarked, wetting and lifting his finger to the air to check.

Warriors bunched up his scarf and pulled it up, looking it over carefully to see if something had physically changed. “It doesn’t look any different than it normally does. I’m not seeing things, right?”

Sky shook his head. “No… I don’t know what’s causing it to move like that. Maybe we should get some more people to watch?”

Yes! Bring more people! Four grinned at the idea. Great idea Sky!

“Sounds like a plan to me.” Warriors turned his head towards Wind and Twilight, who were casually chatting. “Hey Wind, Twilight! Can we get your help with something?”

The two fellow heroes walked over, curious to what Warriors could want. “What’s wrong?” Twilight asked.

Sky pointed to the scarf as Warriors dropped it behind him. “We think Warriors’s scarf might be possessed. Can you guys watch it for a second?”

Wind looked absolutely thrilled at the possibility of the ghost while Twilight gave a small “heh” and rolled his eyes. “Alright, let's watch.”

Four leaped up to grab the scarf again. Now was his chance! People were specifically looking for him! He ran around Warriors again while the two new arrivals gasped. “Wow, it really did move!” Wind exclaimed. “Hey guys! Warriors’s scarf is possessed!” 

Wind’s words caught the attention of the rest of the group while Four continued to wrap Warriors in the scarf. “Well would you look at that.” Twilight squatted down to watch it move. “Hmm… Well, Sky’s right. It’s not the wind. But it’s moving pretty normally. I’d expect it to be a little… faster if it was a ghost.”

“So it’s not a ghost then?”

“Yes! I’m not a ghost!” Four tried shouting this time, trying to catch Twilight’s attention. “It’s me! Four!”

Twilight could not hear him. Four wished that Twilight was in his wolf form about now. If he was, then there was no doubt that Twilight would’ve been able to see him. 

Wait, there was a chance that Twilight might mistake him for a bug and then eat Four if he was in his wolf form, Four quickly realized. Maybe it was better that his friend was still human.

“Let’s have it happen one more time. I think I have an idea what’s happening here.” Twilight said, Wind squatting down besides Twilight.

Warriors yanked on the fabric again, sending Four flat on his face. “Ow!” He got back onto his feet while Warriors reset the fabric. “Oh that’s it!” Four grabbed the fabric again with angry determination. He sprinted around Warriors, pulling the fabric behind him as fast as he could. 

He could hear Twilight laugh as he ran. “Ah, I get it. It’s being pulled by the bottom.” Twilight said. “You’ve got a little friend.”

“Who is it?” Warriors asked as his scarf wrapped around him again.

Wind dropped to his stomach to watch, and then gasped. “OH!” He realized, finally spotting their missing group member. “It’s Four!”

“What?!”

Four stopped, sprinting over to Wind. “Wind! Can you hear me!”

Wind nodded, his eyes sparkling. “Yeah! Wow, you’re really tiny!” He held out the palm of his hand flat for Four to climb on. “What happened?” He asked as Four climbed on.

“One of my items malfunctioned. Until I can get it fixed, I’m stuck like this.” He explained. Once he did, Wind lifted him up off the ground. “It’s an item that can shrink your height. You put the hat on, you shrink, you take it off, you get big.”

“Oh, that makes sense.” Wind said, holding Four close to his face so he could hear him better. The other members of the Chain crowded around Four as well. “He says it’s an item of his that stopped working. Apparently it’s a magic item.” Wind explained, repeating Four’s words when they couldn’t reach their allies' ears.

Warriors pulled the scarf back to its normal position with an annoyed huff. “And you decided to wrap my scarf around me… why?”

“It was the only way I was sure to get someone's attention. Sorry about that.”

“He says he’s sorry.”

“Well it worked.” Warriors admitted. “How do we get you back to normal?”

“We have to fix the item, probably.” Time chimed in, having been listening. “Unfortunately, I’m not quite sure the best way to fix it without knowing what broke.” He turned to Legend and Hyrule. “You two are our best magic users. Any ideas?”

“I dunno why we can’t just keep him like this personally.” Legend said, his traditional cocky grin on his face. “It’s cute! He was short before and now he’s even shorter!”

“And I’m just as lost as you are.” Hyrule said, ignoring Legends' comment. “Maybe if we can find a Great Fairy we can get it fixed but… I’m not sure where we can find one.”

Legend, realizing he was being ignored, sighed. “If it messed up while he was tiny then there’s something wrong with the object bringing him back to normal. Which means it either ran out of magic or it just is having a bad day and it’ll come back after a few hours or so.” He said, opting to be serious. “With luck it’s the second of the two. If it’s the first, then someone’s going to need to manually put magic back into it.”

“That makes sense.” Wild said, poking Four with his finger much to Four’s dismay. “Why don’t I try and scope out where a nearby town is so we can do this somewhere a bit safer? If we lose Four in the woods while he’s tiny we’re probably not getting him back. I’ll bring Hyrule with me for extra eyes.”

“Good call, pup.” Twilight said, moving to grab his things. “Someone’s going to need to grab Four’s stuff. But let’s get Hyrule and Wild to scout out ahead to find a town. Didn’t you two say we were close to one last night?”

Hyrule nodded. “Yup! We’ll scout out a path!”

Time walked over to where Wind was holding the tiny Four, who was now free from Wild’s poking. “Wind, how about you keep a hand on Four for the time being. I’ll grab his things.”

“I’ll help with that.” Warriors said, to which Time gave a nod of acceptance too.

Four let himself sit in Wind’s palm, letting out a sigh of relief. He might’ve been small again, but he was safe. They were going to help him. “Thanks, you guys.” He said, the tips of his ears blushing a slight shade of red.

Wind giggled, moving Four to his shoulder and depositing the tiny hero there. “Aww, you’re welcome! Now c’mon team! Let’s hurry to town and get Four back to normal!”

Would you mind talking about the found family aspect of toh (or the lack of it in your opinion?)

So… I want to start by just mentioning that the Found Family Trope is new enough IN REALITY that its exact definitions are hard to really claim. What is required for a narrative to count as a found family narrative isn't very well defined in part because people are still figuring out what found family means in real life. Is it just a best friend you're really close to? Is it someone who's bailed you out of the worst place you've been in your life even if you've only talked five or so times for more than five minutes?

And worse yet, the concept of family IN GENERAL is very personal to most people. We may have an idea of what it is but is that the ideal family? Reality? How they treat you? Etc. like that. And taking all that confusion and emotion to a narrative is dangerous because you can just claim "The characters believe this" and it becomes hard for an audience to argue even if some part of them disagrees with it.

But we do need some level of definition to even talk about it so what is my personal definition for it? How do I think it should be defined versus a best friend in media? Well… I think it's a person that you tie into your identity, rather than simply you get along with. An attack on them is an attack on you. Even more importantly, it's reciprocated. They would also back you up in almost any circumstance.

They are your port in a storm. Even beyond possible romantic interests, they are who you trust PERIOD. It needs a deep amount of connection and is something you earn in a story, more than is simply there. You need interactions between these characters that progress their characters, tackle their fears, etc. like that AND have the characters around them show understanding, care and growth on such subjects because those people also care about you.

It is COMPLICATED and you cannot half ass it. It took an ENTIRE SEASON of half episodes for Amphibia to really sell just how much the Plantars were Anne's new family to make the family trip as effective and meaningful as it was. To make it so when Hop Pop calls Anne his kid, you don't even blink or celebrate because it feels natural for them to use titles that are so important.

As a note, the episode of AMPHIBIA that made me realize TOH didn't accomplish this was "The Day at the Aquarium". An episode that could have essentially been a clip show about the whole family reminiscing on the mistakes they can now laugh at, dangers they've been through together and the growth as people they've had. And watching it made me ask "Could… Could TOH even do this sort of episode with King, Eda and Luz?" And… I don't think so.

So let's finally actually get into this. Now, I will actually say S2 does it better… But the foundation is REQUIRED for this trope. After all, it's easy to have characters call each other family and treat each other like family if they just start doing it. But is there an arc into that? If there isn't, then these characters claiming this with each other isn't going to feel valid to the audience. After all, as an author you can claim anything you want. If you have not sold the concept to the audience though, they have every right to call bullshit on it. Some people question whether Luz, Willow and Gus are actually friends because of how little Luz gives a fuck about the other two, reaches out to them, etc. and that's a MUCH lower bar to clear.

So… Where do Luz, Eda and King start? Well, luckily that's not very hard. By actions and words, the relationships start with

Eda seeing King as an agreeable tenant and Luz as free labor,

King sees Eda as a powerful minion who's couch he can sleep on while Luz is just a minion,

and finally Luz sees Eda as a mentor and King as a puppy/novelty and both of them as an outlet for her fantasies.

And this is a fine starting point. It fits who the characters are (retcons about Eda and King's past aside, as contradictory as they are) and the world itself. It also allows them to start as actually pretty antagonistic with each other. King doesn't care about anyone other than himself, Eda just wants to make a quick buck with the minimal work she has to put in and Luz easily gets bored by the other two and fucks off to do what she wants. It kind of makes all three look worse which helps allow them to have more growth as characters.

The bigger problem is that it takes EIGHT FUCKING EPISODES for this to change. That's the whole point of Once Upon a Swap. They still look at each other as barely people at that point, like their problems mean nothing to each other and they're all annoying to each other, so now they need a change of perspective. That is the point admittedly of almost ANY swap episode but it is the explicit, narrative point of Once Upon a Swap.

And if you wanna argue with me, here's a quick rundown of the seven episodes previous (I'm mostly ignoring the opening jokes of episodes because this is about something deeper than those casual routines you get into with roommates or friends. This is about a deeper respect than you're going to get through a bunch of puns.):

Ep. 1: Sets these relationships.

Ep. 2: Mocking Luz for wanting a fantasy, sending her off to do work and King is focused on sleeping and snacks. They save Luz not because they have a care about her but because, you know, they're not evil people who are just going to let a young girl bite it. It does have a good ending with them overlooking the Isles but it hardly changes how they've treated Luz this entire episode, nor how they will treat her going forward.

Ep. 3: You have Eda and King making a point of how many bad bets Eda puts on King because it amuses her while Luz goes "Your teaching blows, I'm going to magic school." Theoretically, she learns to listen to Eda but looks pointedly at Adventure in the Elements

Ep. 4: Luz proves how little she respects or sees King as a person as even while he's teaching about demons, something Luz ostensibly should be interested in, she's too busy goofing around and squealing about how cute he is. They also screw over Eda by stealing from her and really throw into question how long King has lived with Eda because he never knew about the curse or elixirs before now in a proper way… somehow. Saving Eda and showing basic respect to King happens by the end but again, that's kind of the bare minimum to being good people. Like… You should give basic humanity to a stranger, let alone someone you're living with who you theoretically told to make this lesson for you.

Ep. 5: This one makes a very good point about how little Eda has taught Luz while Eda continues to shit on things that make Luz excited. She has no interest in the things Luz cares about and only through literary torture does she decide to go. You have King who fucks off entirely and only defends Luz as far as his own pride goes, to the point of having a joke right before episode break of "Oh, you're gonna lose" because once Luz started being his champion and a good minion, he stopped caring because he'd gotten what he'd asked and so salvaging the cupcake was a higher priority.

Ep. 6: Luz uses the house for a sleepover against Eda's wishes, with enough reluctance to show proper respect to Eda while still being a teenager, and… otherwise not much? Not wanting a tenant to be owned by someone else is, again, kind of basic when it comes to humanity so I don't even have much to say about the Eda and King stuff and Luz barely interacts with the other two in the episode.

Ep. 7: Luz straight up ditches the other two for the library while they have to deal with Bat Lady kids and… That's it. Luz doesn't interact with the other two and the other two are being comic relief.

And… I'll admit that this sounds harsh but when not looking for found family, it's all fine. In fact, a lot of it is entertaining to varying degrees, gives them unique personalities that are a bit different from most cartoons and gives the main cast almost a mercenary feel towards each other which is pretty unique. It actually functions just fine narratively.

Unless you're trying to tell me these people are going to become anything more than best friends. Because eight episodes of barely giving a shit about each other, of showing more than what would be expected on the neutral alignment line of D&D, isn't a great start to put it mildly. This gets worse when you remember that Season 1 is 19 episodes long so you spend close to half the season like this.

And remember: By the end of Season 1, Momma Eda is supposed to really be taking full force in how she sees Luz and King is supposed to want Luz to never leave. The found family aspect is going to get a lot strong going forward so we only have really until the S1 finale, when ALL of these characters are willing to die for each other, to turn this around.

King isn't even in the next episode in any real role though. The ninth episode is the Gus episode. Where Luz spends the entire time at Hexide and Eda decides to see about getting Luz no longer banned. Now, for Eda, this is actually good growth because she's willing to recognize the importance to this, not only for Luz as a person but also to Luz herself and so is willing to put effort into something Luz cares about. It's something that most would probably be willing to do for a friend.

But now we're actually halfway through the season… And we still have FIVE Hexide episodes. Five episodes where Luz fucks off to hang out with Hexide kids and the closest to Eda and King doing anything with Luz in these is chaperoning Grom, which isn't much, facilitating the brain jump spell and doing comic relief with Gus, and King and Gus helping King with his stage fright.

And again, none of this is bad… But it's not building a foundation for calling these people family. It's not even building a foundation for being friends outside of the silly jokes that Luz and King develop mostly off screen.

And while back fill and retcon can be used to help with things, your audience is going to remember the larger interactions more. So… What larger interactions DO we have?

Well, King gets three more in the checks episode list ENTIRE SEASON of interactions that are majorly with Eda or Luz. Four if you REALLY stretch it and count his 'role' in Young Blood, Old Souls, though he doesn't exactly do much. Otherwise, you have him using Eda's curse to his advantage for selfish purposes, him becoming famous and telling Luz and her ideas to fuck off until he's in trouble with his deadlines and finally Small Problems which is just a complete mess and actually shows off the problem with what's happened so far because even as early as that, King is claiming Luz isn't spending enough time with him… And why should she? What have you two done together? Actually, even better yet, WHY SHOULD YOU CARE!? You two have barely done anything on screen together, let alone anything that has been super positive or a major bonding moment for one another.

So… King's a bust. What about Eda at least? Momma Eda is crucial afterwards so at least her relationship with Luz is strong, correct?

Actually, fun aside, I haven't checked writing that leading statement so I actually don't know. Let's find out together.

Okay, I swear this isn't a bit but… Even if you include Small Problems, Grom, and Escape of the Palisman… She has four. That's not a joke. It's actually more of a reminder of how much time Lilith takes up in the second half of the season. It also makes sense because Eda is just entirely out of commission for the last two episodes and seven episodes are already taken up by either Hexide or King.

So the one episode left to her… Is Adventure in the Elements. Where Luz doesn't listen to her or respect her. Grom is the next closest and it's spent with Eda mostly mocking Luz and chaperoning. So...

I actually ask all of you to look at an episode list yourself for a refresher but besides bits at the start or end of an episode, PLENTY if you're justifying them being friends… How much does the Owl Family really interact with each other? How good is their relationship going off what we've actually seen in the episodes?

Again, for selling them being friends, that's enough, especially for the S1 finale. Luz is a good person and wouldn't want to leave her mentor in worse shape than she first got there. For Eda, Luz is a final chance to have made a positive impact on the world and to claim that a part of her will go on after the curse consumes her. The two giving their lives for one another works on that wavelength.

But it's not because they're family. Not even close. And that is fine… Until the show leans into claiming Found Family was always a theme of it. When it very clearly wasn't.

Not to me at least. And again, starting from EPISODE ONE of S2, the entire family is treating each other better and with more respect than they ever did in S1, and the S1 finale is a good enough reason for that shift. They're now actually friends.

But it will be six episode after that where Luz and King are called Eda's kids, and one of them changes their last name, and Eda doesn't reject any of this. Six episodes to go from friends who are finally giving a shit about each other… and three of them are Hexide episodes. And besides Eda and King getting some Palistrom wood, they still the format of Hexide episodes (I'm counting Hunting Palisman in this) of having Luz just be away from the other two. Hunting Palisman doesn't even have a B plot with them, Escaping Expulsion does no character work between Eda and King and I don't think King and Eda even show up in Looking Glass Ruins.

So… No. I think the show proudly proclaims that it is found family, that Eda is truly Momma Eda through and through, it's writing checks that its actions have left it woefully prepared to cash.

And if it never tried writing them, none of this would have ever been a problem. But being Found Family makes it more special, doesn't it? And being able to be called special has often been more important to TOH than actually following through with the elements that would have made it special. And this is what makes deep diving analysis on this show so exhausting. *sigh*

♥︎ Lots of people consider Natsu to be “dumb” which I highly disagree with. Book smart is not the only form of intellect. Natsu may do things which may get him in dangerous situations or worse even killed but this is not stupidity, it’s recklessness.

He’s aware of the risks and still takes them regardless. The other argument that people make is that Natsu isn’t book smart, I will not debate anyone on that but what exactly makes him dumb in this sense? The fact that he struggles to read? The fact that he struggles with complex concepts?

I’ve never understood why people think Natsu is dumb. It has been shown that his battle IQ is extremely high and his problem solving skills peak when in stressful situations. His emotional intelligence is also high, he is quick to read situations and think of a solution. For example, during Edolas it was because of Natsu that Mystogan was able to become king. He quickly thought that if they gave the people a common enemy that they would ban together to defeat him. This wasn’t a “dumb” idea at all, in fact it was a highly intelligent one. While he isn’t as smart as Lucy or Levy this doesn’t mean he has to be dumb. None of the other characters are considerably smart either yet only Natsu gets the dumb treatment.

Natsu is definitely more brawn than brains but when forced to he tries his best to come up with ideas. I will compare him to another character in the show who is also considered dumb who is Toby Horhorta. If we look at this comparison alone their intelligence are highly different. Natsu isn’t school smart but can trick someone like Toby with ease and avoid a fight altogether. Also I think it is unfair to compare Natsu’s school intelligence to other characters since he didn’t have a proper upbringing. In the episode “Natsu and the Dragon Egg” in a conversation with Lisanna Natsu states that since there’s no one to take care of him he has to get meals and work by himself. Natsu didn’t have access to education since he had to work from a young age. The only person willing to teach him was Erza who also had an unstable upbringing. Since he’s had to provide for himself since a young age, school has probably never been a priority for Natsu.

Moving on to another form of intelligence Natsu possesses is emotional intelligence. Natsu has for a countless number of times saved the other members from self destruction, self loathing, and even suicide simply by being himself. This type of intelligence is not something that is taught but instinct. When Laxus was on a rampage Natsu’s plan to beat him was to show him how fairy tail shows love. He fought with him to save him but to also show that he’ll always be a fairy. When Gray was about to preform iced shell, he showed him that loosing someone isn’t the way to fix things. And when Erza was going to sacrifice herself, he showed her that her friends would rather have her with them. This couldn’t have been done as well with any other member of fairy tail. Since Natsu acts as the heart of the guild, only he could get through to them in a way that would actually resonate. Because even though it may not seem like it, Natsu understands. He understood that Laxus wanted what was best for the the guild. He understood that Gray’s past was haunting him. And he understood that Erza was scared to death. Despite all of that Natsu still managed to get through to them.

This level of emotional intelligence is extremely hard to have. The fact that Natsu understands it at all is something amazing. So no, I don’t think Natsu is dumb at all. I think he’s one of the smartest characters in fairy tail.

you may not believe it, but she cares a lot about what other people think of her

it's hard being the heir to Lady Dimitrescu. she has pretty big shoes to fill, and she gets really upset anytime someone is disappointed in her

she is a perfectionist, and she will beat herself up if she does something wrong

much like Cassandra, she likes when certain people snap back at her or tease her back. none of the maids ever do it, so it's really refreshing

she is fiercely stubborn, and even if she's clearly in the wrong, she won't admit it until after the argument (something she learned from her mother, probably)

when it comes to self-control, she's a mix between Cassandra and Daniela. for certain things, she can handle herself and the new instincts the Cadou gave her by stepping away from the situation or distracting herself

she does have a tendency to go a little feral after drinking fresh blood, so it's probably best to stay away if it's her feeding time

unless you're into that. i don't judge >:)

Bela does feel horrible for everything her sisters have gone through to get to where they are, though she doesn't regret what she did

her favorite places to mark her partner are their neck and thighs

it's not uncommon for her and Cassandra to get into fights over petty things (mostly caused by the latter), to which they'll both just agree to disagree after a week of not speaking and move on with their lives

she enjoys people-watching

Stressing for a Blessing

I don’t know the right way to start this, because what I’m about to write is just a culmination of thoughts I’ve had recently. I feel as a black man there’s so much that worries & stresses us more than the average non-black human. Granted, our sisters can relate & our brothers of different ethnic groups in second & third-world countries have a valid right to argue that what they experience is just as bad, if not worse, but I won’t get anywhere if I sat here and compared certain minorities different struggles. I guess what I’m trying to say is that there is so much out there in the world that wants to affect our health, well-being, and to put it plainly, seeks to kill us physically, spiritually, and mentally. A lot of things in life are weaponized & used against us.

[I’m just speaking from my experience & an outsider may disagree, but I know there is truth in what I write.]

I’m doing my best to protect my mind, body, and spirit, but lately I’ve been discouraged because with every monthly visit to the doctor I’m reminded that I have certain conditions that are indicators that I’m not in my peak as far as my mental & physical health goes. I can sit here and list the causes such as societal pressures, punishments, financial hardship, and my turbulent upbringing. I can list those causes, but I’m writing this to come to some sort of solution for them. I often feel other people need reasons to care for you rather than just genuinely caring. If you stay silent in your suffering then nobody is alerted or feels obligated to frankly give a fuck about what you have going on. Which is sad, but the majority of the world is selfish.

I often think there is nothing wrong with selfishness because I truly believe you must take care of yourself before taking care of someone else. Especially in order to care for someone else properly and without bitterness. I guess I just hate that within certain people’s selfishness is the act of being inconsiderate or ignorant in the true definition of ignoring situations and losing awareness. To go back to my earlier point, I’m afraid of dying young, but it often seems like it’d be unavoidable in my current circumstance. I’m mentally ill, I’m physically unfit, and I have anxieties that are often crippling. So what exactly are the solutions? I guess you could say medication (which almost always has side effects), exercise (which requires discipline, dedication, and commitment to a routine), and balls of steel (confidence & a carefree attitude which you can’t gain overnight). Those solutions are a start in the right direction, it would just take practice and a mindset of someone who doesn’t quit no matter how many times they’re knocked down from discouragement & distracted by a world that’s built for them to fail. I genuinely want better. I just have to constantly remind myself why that is. I want to be somebody that has something to offer to those I love, those I trust, and those that love & trust me. It’s a cliché, but I know if I forget that, I’d feel as though I’m better off dead.

At this moment, I’m just stressed out & don’t want to ask for so much help that I become a liability or burden on somebody else. I want to hold on to any ounce of dignity I have left. I also want to be in a position where if I do ask for help I’ll have something to offer to where it’s an even exchange so that the other party doesn’t build resentment. I have enough enemies as there is & would like to have less. & Honestly, fuck ‘em. What good reason do they have to be against me? I digress.

Great things are bound to happen, it’s just a matter of living long enough to see those moments, and maintaining them. For now I’ll do as the elders say & simply count my blessings.

hi, i’m the anon about not liking harry and louis anymore, i appreciate your answer. we may have different opinions but your points definitely made me see things from a different perspective. one thing i definitely agree with is that louis could be more gentler with his queer fans. i know he’s closeted and because of that he can’t be as open as he may want, but there’s plenty of artists who aren’t lgbtq+ who love and appreciate their queer fans. i’m an optimistic, for better or for worse, and i hope there’s a change in the future where he realizes and/or is able to do appreciate us more explicitly.

i also agree we should be able to criticize harry and louis when they fuck up. they’re not perfect and they’re bound to do things who are wrong or we may disagree with. i hate how when you criticize them you’re immediately labeled as a hater. i love them and that’s why i criticize them. back when harry made the nyc clap for the queen i was angry and disappointed, and i rightfully criticized him, but i got asks about how i was the worst for criticism him, and when louis and team cancelled the asian leg without a clear explanation i also criticized it and once again i got asks about how i hated him and should just become a solo harrie if i hated him so much. as i said i don’t hate them, i don’t think i could ever hate them, but when they act wrong we have the right to speak about it.

i’ve been defensive over louis after the tweet because i saw people mocking his mental health and speculating about his trauma in regards to jay’s and fizzy’s deaths, and as someone who’s struggled with mental illnesses and has had loved family members die which has deeply affected me, i felt sick and distraught over it. but i’m now aware not everyone who’s felt hurt over the tweet are like that, they’re just expressing and letting out their feelings. i shouldn’t police how they process their feelings.

Yes! It's important to call them out and criticise them. They aren’t perfect and they will screw up. We shouldn't just tolerate everything with a smile. You aren’t a hater if you don’t agree with something they do and point it out. We love them, but the love shouldn't be unconditional. If calling them out on stuff you don’t approve of makes you a hater, then fuck them. Stick to your own morals and boundaries.

And yes we shouldn't police how others process their feelings! We've all got our own frame of references and life experiences that influences our feelings and reactions. If you are easily influenced by others feelings or reactions and don't like how they act, then instead of criticising them, policing them or try to control them, remove yourself from the situation. Mute, unfollow or block. It's important to not kill others joy or let other people drag you down with their negativity. Fandom is supposed to be fun!

The Stars May Rise and Fall: The Annotated Re-read (Chapter 19)

So, after finding a chapter I actually really liked, I’m definitely less proud of chapter 19.

*sigh* Spoilers under the cut!

This is another part that’s largely there for scene setting, and I guess the nostalgia factor, because we get to see what it’s like at one of these uchiages… which I guess you’d translate as “after party.”

There are a couple different types of uchiage, some definitely more fun than others. If the band is really small and doesn’t have many fans, it sometimes isn’t much of a party at all, but just an impromptu “Let’s go for drinks.” Sometimes an individual band will set something up… there will be a sign at their merch table or the staff will ask anyone who hands in a questionnaire if they want to go. Those usually end up being pretty casual too. If the uchiage is for multiple bands, ESPECIALLY if the host is an event planner or a super famous band, it can get a little more formal, where the band members, staff, and fans all have to sit at separate tables at the beginning, and you never really know if you’re allowed to go around to the other tables and mingle until it starts. At anything that’s planned (whether for a single band or an event), the band members generally don’t pay. The fans pay for both their own food and drink and a portion toward the musicians’… which seems fair enough if you’re allowed to speak to them, but always felt like a giant ripoff at the “no mingling” events… you’re supposed to pay for the privilege of being at the opposite end of the room as someone who isn’t actually all that famous to begin with? Meh. I didn’t really go into some of the ickier aspects of the scene… Teru’s band is all basically decent people, and there WERE definitely bands like that too, but there were also bands who basically prostituted themselves out for Vivienne Westwood bags or whatever, and otherwise abused the power they had over their fans.

ANYWAY! This is a bigger uchiage with more than one band, but none of them are super big (or super full of themselves) so it’s kind of casual. Those were honestly probably the most fun… it’s a little more special than just drinks with friends but you’re also not expected to follow a million unspoken rules? So the band walks to the izakaya with a group of their fans, and after initially sitting at separate tables to do the toast, they do mingle with the fans.

This, of course, reminds Teru that Rei advised him not to do things like this… to “act like a star if he wants to become one.” Rei does have a point there. The bands who acted all holier-than-thou definitely tended to sell better, and this is something I struggle with at my day job too… that people who act like they’re hot stuff get promoted and nice people get left behind. It sucks. But Teru IS a nice person, he knows he’s not holier than anyone, and he’s a giant fanboy himself too, so he definitely really disagrees with Rei on this. This is probably that “fairness” thing coming into play again too… Teru believes that nice guys SHOULD finish first, and he refuses to accept a world where that’s not the case. (And when he is famous at the very end, he’s super nice to his fans… I don’t think that would ever change.)

A lot of this is just kind of scene setting, showing what a “normal” night after a show would be for Teru if he wasn’t always going off to Rei’s apartment, and also just to show that, although this should be something fun, he’s really not enjoying it… just drinking too much and worrying about the piece of paper Chizuru gave him, which he assumes/hopes is some kind of message from Rei.

I honestly don’t really love how angry he is at Rei here… it doesn’t really seem to fit? I guess I wanted him to be angry that Rei sent Chizuru with what was admittedly a petty, jealous message, but Teru did much, much worse to Rei the last time they were together so… maybe he was supposed to be angry at himself or the situation, but in retrospect I don’t love how he’s written here. He comes off angry at Rei when he should be more angry at himself or even just disappointed that he wasn’t able to actually see Rei at the show?

He’s definitely disappointed even further when the piece of paper Chizuru gave him turns out to be not a message from Rei at all, but just Chizuru’s phone number.

And then Kiyomi gets about a million times more annoying… I have mixed feelings about the next scene, where she gets really drunk and kisses Teru. On the one hand… it definitely doesn’t do Kiyomi any favors, and since I didn’t really want readers to HATE her, even if I had exactly zero intention that anyone would be shipping anyone other than Teru and Rei here, I maybe went too far?

On the other hand, I also think the kiss, and then Kiyomi falling asleep in Teru’s lap, and Teru feeling absolutely NOTHING other than the need to talk to and apologize to Rei is what really sort of wakes him up to the fact that he HAS fallen for Rei, and that it doesn’t really matter that Rei’s a guy, or that he doesn’t have a nose, or that he’s almost twice Teru’s age or anything else… He really realizes here that he’s in love, and that he has to leave, even though it’s 2am and he has no idea if Rei will ever want to see him again.

I guess one of the biggest things to take out of this chapter is that I never really meant this to be a love triangle. I actually think a lot of “love triangles” are like that… Suzanne Collins never wanted you to be Team Gale, and Stephenie Meyer never wanted you to be Team Jacob. And Rumiko Takahashi never wanted you to want Godai to end up with Kozue or Kyoko with Mitaka… if anything I think Gaston Leroux’s Phantom is somewhat unique in that you can actually make a compelling case for wanting Christine to end up with Erik or with Raoul. (At least I can… I know people have strong feelings on both sides though,)

But I never really wanted this to be a love triangle… it was set up that way at first, because I wanted to write a retelling, but I think Kiyomi came very quickly to represent the option of staying in the closet, of being what the world expects you to be rather than who you really are. Teru has already decided at this point not to pursue Kiyomi, and so the final choice he makes is not between Rei and Kiyomi, but between Rei and his career….

And I’m getting way ahead of myself here. This was sort of a necessary chapter to move the plot along and get Kiyomi out of the potentially romantic picture, but overall I’m sort of meh about it. Should’ve edited more!

Uhhhh generally being kind of an ass? Which I feel is the answer to every question about him, but let's get a bit more specific maybe. Unbothered only child behavior means he's very protective of his stuff and he reaaaally doesn't like it being moved around or touched by other people, even if that other person is literally his wife who lives with him. He slams doors by habit even when he's not particularly mad, he won't make any effort having an agreeable facial expression (that's worth even after he moves on to a happier life, he has a massive case of resting bitch face), stuff like that.

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into “flight” or “fight”?

FIGHT no questions asked. He becomes a mercenary later on, and I guarantee that's because he could do the job. He may not always have the muscle to back it up, but being angry is his LIFEBLOOD and he WILL get agressive. He flees exactly once in his life, and that's only because fighting himself from the inside is a little more complicated. Every other time he WILL try make the world ploy to his presence (and probably fail, but he's nothing if not an unmovable object)

☕️ HOT BEVERAGE - do they prefer hot or cold drinks? what is their favourite drink?

Being the medieval-ish setting that it is, and Earth not being part of the upper crust, there's not a lot of variety to choose from unfortunately. But his wife's whole deal being transporting merchandise, he does have access to stuff sometimes. Big fan of hot beverages, anything above near-boiling water is good for him. They do have a bit of cultural importance around harvests in the setting I think, so certain fruit juices aren't uncommon, but he's not that into it. He probably just like the sensory experience of a hot cup of something more than the taste of whatever's inside honestly.

��� MAPLE LEAF - what is their favourite season? why?

Another one I don't think I've ever thought about! I think he'd like spring better? Living in earth pony land basically, farming is a big part of the local life and landscape, so winter is probably horribly depressing to him, even worse than the rest of the time. Summer would be too disagreeable to him for wheather reasons. Autumn is basically winter already and he's not a very uh, aesthetically versed person, he doesn't give a fuck if it looks pretty or not. He wouldn't care if flowers bloom in spring, but whether he admits it or not the greenery coming back would help him emotionally, and the rhythm of life speeding up around the sowing and preparations and all would be beneficial to him even if he'd also hate it. He doesn't usually like stuff that is objectively good for him.

🙈 SEE-NO-EVIL - whats a side of your oc that they don’t want to show other people?

That's pretty difficult to answer because Earth is already not clear on who he is enough to have sides, let alone a side he shows to himself, let alone any control over what he shows to other people. He acts like an asshole by convenience and habit, and he doesn't ever try to turn it around. If he did a bit of introspection... got some will to live and purpose back in his dumb thick skull... he probably wouldn't want to show any of it to anyone ever. He's scared of changing and becoming someone he wasn't before. His wife would definitely remark upon it, with all her usual delicacy (precisely none), and he would explode on the spot I think. Just shrivel up and die. Or realistically, he'd have a complete anger meltdown. He doesn't want anyone to see that he ever was wrong, so he just appears as if he 100% believes in what he's doing, and besides the possible introspection he could have where he realizes that maybe he's kind of an asshole, in his regular life he's not angry and snappy and rude all the time, he's also pretty sad and jaded, but he keeps up the facade of agressivity so he doesn't have to interact more than he strictly has to. And over time he bricks himself more and more into that temperament, until it's impossible for him to be anything else because he has effectively been an asshole to everyone around him for his entire life. They'd see his lack of passion as a vulnerable spot, and he couldn't handle any of the reactions, even though the townspeople aren't out for his blood or anything, just kinda fed up with the local jerkass.

🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

Technically speaking, Iron Man. My beloved Earth Science started out as a vague pony copy of whatever my little 10yo mind that had never seen any marvel thing ever had decided Tony Stark was like, and he was in a different setting, more like show-era Equestria with a whole different cast of OCs in my head, just for fun. Then I joined that forum and repurposed him as my player character for totally cis reasons, and he was progressively rebuilt to fit the setting and definitely not because i was projecting anything onto him until he gained a whole character arc of his own and some meat n potatoes of context around his daily existence.

So technically the very first thing was his main character trait of being abrasive and assholish, which is why it comes up so often, as he was built around that. The design must've been pretty early too, because he is the one most basic mlp oc I've ever seen. He's default red, default dark blue, almost default green, and default haircut. I really should add some stuff to him to make him a little more unique and "lived in", but I've never gotten around to it.

Ranking the First of October songs

Because Andrew Huang showed that someone else had ranked them, and I desperately feel the need to formally disagree by ranting about them for a while.

I'm putting my money where my mouth is by actually ranking all of them myself. For context, Andrew's tweet: https://twitter.com/andrewhuang/status/1611052440630992896 It would take me much too long to explain my disagreements with the original ranking, and I think the replies show enough examples that I don't think starting off with my own rants here would be justified. Instead, they'll be sprinkled throughout where I think they should be. If something doesn't seem to have an explanation for its ranking I've probably slotted it in after realising it should've been lower down.

Unfortunately, something has to go into last place as the worst FoO song. Fortunately, The 11th Song exists to make that choice much easier. This isn't to say it's a horrendously written song and that it brings active distaste towards the rest of the album or anything - it's just that it didn't need to be there and nothing would really be missed without it. How on Earth did it get placed at 24th? Same goes for the weird tacked-on ending of Ben Wyatt with the electronica that just had to go somewhere. (I know my writing here may come across as brutally harsh, and that's because it should - just in a joking way. They're good songs, but something has to go in last.)

And now, all of the songs that weren't written with a 4 minute time constraint worsened by Pro Tools crashing halfway through the recording.

It's genuinely difficult to put these into a formal order because I think they're all fantastic in their own unique ways. There's also no list that can appease absolutely everyone, and I'll probably disagree with myself by the time I've finished writing this - but it has to be finished at some point or I could keep debating everything forever. Frankly, the more I stare at this song list, the more I despair at what I'm doing and the impossibility of it all.

#40: Two Friends #39: Don't Go to My House #38: We Didn't Have Time to Get Lyrics on This One #37: Things to Do

Largely from the first album, with the first two being somewhat rushed ("somewhat" as if they weren't written back to back in incredibly short timespans). Rob and Andrew have improved at their speedy songwriting immensely with each passing year, and these were right at the start of it. Lyrics were also rushed for this first album (but let's not forget that they had two fewer hours for it too), and that definitely had its effects on Things to Do - they work, but honestly not much more than that. The same can be said for #38, but hit even worse by the time they had left - at least Two Friends and Don't Go to My House came pretty naturally to Rob. Spoilers for Playdead's Inside should probably go here for a similar reason, but the rest of its musical writing do bring it up a bit. Nowhere near as high as the original ranking at 11th, but better than the high 30s.

Past this point, it's brutally painful to rank them, because a lot of songs need to be placed lower down in order for others to be higher up. (Also - reasoning and actual ranking becomes basically arbitrary because seriously it's impossible to do this well.)

#36: Apology Melody #35: Coffee! Yeah!

Another case for the lyrics in these putting them lower down, I think. Apology Melody gets put lower due to its more minimal arrangement and emptiness. It works for the song, and I don't think it should've been done much differently if at all - it just ends up lower down because I don't think it's as good as the rest of them.

#34: October 1 #33: Possible Band Names #32: Ben Wyatt #31: Spoilers for Playdead's Inside

Again, lyrics let these down. October 1's repetition is fun but grows comparatively bland; Possible Band Names is chill and nice but otherwise somewhat boring; and Ben Wyatt, while being a pretty good song, is let down by its ending. Spoilers for Playdead's Inside now sits at the low 30s.

#30: First of October #29: It's Halloween #28: Jangly Bones #27: Riff Lord #26: Climb That Mountain! #25: Feels So Right

For First of October and Climb That Mountain!: Death to C major. (Not really, otherwise the other C major pieces would've gone down here - I just can't really think of good reasoning. They don't spark as much in me as some of the others. Climb That Mountain! gets put higher because that modulation brings out something more.) As much as I'd like to put Jangly Bones and Riff Lord higher, I don't feel like I can or should, but maybe by the end I'll think differently. Riff Lord also feels incredibly like Rob with the soloing - as he put it, pick a scale and just move up and down it. I'm pretty sure he's already used some of those lines in a different song/thing with Jessica Burdeaux, and that's outside of Djazz too. (Not that that's a bad thing necessarily - just that I recognise it maybe a little too well.) Feels So Right is quite fun, but also what's weezer

#24: Woo! #23: Rollerbladin' #22: Thirty-First of October #21: Trick or Treat #20: I Am Not Afraid

Woo! is short, fun, and great all around, and I have no complaints about it. Nonetheless, it's here because it has to go somewhere and the other songs do more (both figuratively with the ideas and arrangements as well as literally with being more than 37 seconds long). Rollerbladin' is the same - well-written, but I think the others do more.

#19: Temporary #18: Headless #17: Greg! #16: Don't Go #15: Valerie

Midwest emo isn't really my thing but I do still find it enjoyable. Temporary is incredibly well-written and I can't fault it. Headless is solid, Greg! is just pure fun, and Don't Go and Valerie are the sweet acoustic songs of the first two albums. They had to go somewhere.

#14: Grandad's Dinner Party #13: Spooky Time #12: Never Say Goodbye #11: Lonely Angel

So the sweet songs get beaten by Primus and the lead song of CHAOS. (I probably could've switched those around and it'd still be completely fair in my eyes; I just thought about them first and so they get put a little lower because this is basically a gigantic ramble post I'm poorly disguising as thoughtful discourse.) Never Say Goodbye and Lonely Angel are fantastic songs, and their placement is pretty much only decided by the bees that invaded in the bridge of Never Say Goodbye.

#10: Left My Pants in Chicago #9: Ravioli #8: Always #7: Good Enough #6: Do You Want To?

Now we're getting to the undeniably iconic songs of the albums. I just put them in their respective slots because they're where I felt like putting them and frankly, it was already entirely arbitrary and opinion-based after I listed the first few, so does it really matter where these ones go? They're fantastic, and that's all that matters.

#5: Bookmobile #4: Lonely Angel #3: Love to Say I Love You #2: Miracle #1: Find The Way

The cream of the crop and the end of this gigantic list and blog. I think Find The Way beats out Miracle just by the slightest of margins with the absolute quality of the arranging and everything that went into it. I think this also makes a little too clear my bias for the latest album, but so be it. It's my list, and that's all that matters to me.

I get what you are saying but be careful not to confuse personal experience for universal truth. I’m overweight and have none of the above issues. Going from 65 to 95 kg has not caused me any health issues. I have had many a test at the request of concerned doctors and family and all prove I’m in perfect health, I have no issues with mobility at all, and the only inconveniences come from people’s criticism of my appearance. People like me do exist. Being fat is often a concern but it’s not a foolproof sign of bad health. I think any fat person who is also ill because of their weight and size will know that well enough without society’s assumptions.

(perfect health aside from my thyroid illness, but I don’t count that since if anything it is a cause of the weight gain and not its result)

Thank you for the civil perspective, I do appreciate that you didn't involve the post's comment section's peanut gallery. I will try to elaborate a bit and hopefully that should clear up some things that I may have been too brief about. (I try to keep my replies on posts short, and I'm aware that this often leads to ambiguity.) I don't outright disagree with anything you said.

Of course every body is different and there's individual "limits" of what weight a person can be before noticing severe impairments to their health and living standard. A person who's barely 1.60 meters will put a lot more strain on their body with the same weight than a person who's standing at almost 2 meters. I'm aware that the weight I mentioned in my reply is not a universal "threshold" that applies to everyone, it is very specific to me and my own body. And to my body, it started causing issues I hadn't experienced before. And it wasn't a stable weight I was at either, it was only going to get worse if my living conditions hadn't drastically changed.

I'm still not what most people would call thin , and I have no desire to be. I adore all sorts of body types. But I finally feel like I've returned to a weight that allows me to do my work and to live comfortably without physical limitations caused by me being overweight for my proportions.

When I say that I've not met a person yet that has been entirely unimpaired by being overweight - according to their own personal definition - it's just that. Even if it maybe doesn't apply to every single person in the world, for those I've met and for myself, our lives would have improved if we had dealt with less stigma from doctors and family and been able to get more unbiased support.

That's also part of why I hold the views that I described in my reblog and why I stand by them - it's no one's right to judge others by their weight, not even if they should by some miracle be privy to that other's health history and life circumstances. That includes being pushy about whether others should lose weight or not. If someone seeks help for their weight when it becomes a problem for them, they should receive all the support they need. And it should become less of a taboo to seek help even if you're not too sick to move yet.

Sometimes that support doesn't even need to directly target weight loss, since as I think we can all agree, weight gain is very frequently a symptom of another underlying issue.

All in all, that's what I think body positivity needs to be about. It needs to be about hope and accepting the "current body" as a state which can change (for better or worse) and is the summary of many factors rather than a personality flaw or unchanging fact of fate. It also needs to be about honesty and responsibility, to acknowledge that even if something may not be your fault or bad intentions, it can still be damaging/unhealthy.

I hope that's better worded. I'm not good at explaining my opinions very well, especially not in a concise way. But I'm sure our values are similar, even if we express them differently.

Feel free to point it out as well if there's something in this response that should be discussed more. I consider myself reasonable and open-minded. I'm always willing to re-evaluate my views if the other person is willing to point out something wrong with them in a non-hostile manner.

3. It’s movie night! Who chooses the movie? Does anyone disagree with the choice?

Lately 💫 and I have been wanting to watch X (2022) and Pearl (2022) as a little double feature, so we'll probably go with that. The two of us have a long tradition of watching horror movies together, although we haven't in a while. 🪙has never seen a movie before in his life, so I don't think he'd disagree!

4. Someone (perhaps a friend or family member) said something hurtful to you. How do your F/Os handle it? Do any of them confront the person? Do they argue with each other about how to deal with the situation? How do they comfort you?

As soon as 💫 was done making sure I'm alright, he would go confront them. I think it's unlikely that 🪙 would care. If he did, he would definitely confront them, and it wouldn't be pretty.

The two of them wouldn't get along super well, but they have a lot in common. I have a type. One of the things they have in common is that they are both... mean. Wholly separate from the fact that they are evil and do far worse things than being mean, but they are mean. I'd go so far as to describe 💫 as an asshole.

I'd probably end up feeling bad for whoever said something hurtful to me because they'd surely be crying by the end of that conversation.

8. A stranger just flirted with you, in front of your F/Os! How do they react? Do some become upset or protective? Are some chill about it? Do they argue with each other over the proper response to it?

💫's reaction depends on the situation. If I seemed comfortable with it and was enjoying the attention, she wouldn't say anything (although she might feel jealous.) However, the moment that he thought I was uncomfortable or the flirtation was unwarranted, he'd put an arm around my waist protectively and start giving them The Look.

🪙may not be capable of loving me back, heck, he might not even care for me at all, but I love him. That makes me his. He would not take kindly to someone flirting with me. He'd probably threaten them, which would be quite embarrassing for me.

Quite frankly, if they were in this situation together, I can’t see it going well. My feelings for 🪙 may or may not have been a major contributor to the end of my romantic relationship with 💫. 💫 wouldn't appreciate the way that 🪙 treated me, and 🪙 wouldn't appreciate how close I still am with 💫.

That stranger would soon find themselves dragged into the middle of my relationship drama!

Not sure if those of you who don’t speak German realize how bad the dialogues are this season.  I’ve really got to praise the other Germans on here who keep translating the clips and chats, making them -as I’ve often noticed- sound slightly better than they actually are.  I appreciate that the writers aren’t trying to make these teens sound older than they are, but very often it’s really just terrible.  Add to that, that a lot of the writing choices are more than questionable, PLUS the actors’ tendency to mumble, and you’ll understand why after some clips even us Germans are like “huh? who said what now?”  

Not just the overall storytelling of this season is very vague, the actual dialogues are too and to achieve that effect (for whatever reason) they write almost unintelligible lines for these characters.

once he slowly gets closer and closer to you after realizing his crush, he slowly backs away. it's like a game of push and pull; you attract him with everything there is to learn about you, he pushes you away because of everything there is to learn about him. he can't let you get too close to him, since he could end up putting you in danger if all his crimes catch up to him, especially if all his secrets, which he put so much effort into hiding, are revealed. not to mention the kind of emotional stress he would be putting you under if he let you share some of his burden by opening up about his past. and when he loses you, he loses you forever. for such a clever guy, he fails to accept that these are things that couples work out and brave together, so he distances himself from you because of it. he hurts him just as much as it hurts you, but he thinks disappearing for a few days at a time is for your own good (as much as you would beg to disagree).

sova

he doesn't have much doubts about his growing relationship with you, besides it getting in the way of missions. though he doubts that'll happen, since he believes the two of you work well together. other than that, he hopes that he won’t scare you off by being too unreadable. there's many feelings beneath his stony surface, mostly warmth and content when he's with you, but he finds it difficult to openly express them. he also hopes you don't find him overbearing or cloying from all his acts of service and affectionate words. even worse, you may discover his other nature. though he's definitely still a good-natured guy all around, he has hunted man and animal alike outside of missions. if it ever comes to it, he doesn't want you to see how brutal and predatory he can be. despite all this, he doesn't think these things would stop him from being with you; he doesn't think anything could. he's as confident as he always is, and if anything, he believes facing them with you would strengthen your relationship.

yoru

though he's boastful with everyone and everything else, when it comes to you, it's easier for him to spot his weak points. sometimes, after he's said something a bit more insensitive than usual, he reflects deeply on it. he does see that he can be a bit too mean, but he's not humble enough to apologize. he's also aware that he’s inexperienced when it comes to the whole relationship thing. he’s not emotionally available, for one thing, and doesn't know how to deal with his crush and feelings in general. when he sees you retreating from him after he's screwed up or snapped, he's honest to god scared. was that really his fault? why did he have to let his pride get in the way? he’ll brood and put some space between the two of you until he's ready to face you again. when he does, he'll say quietly, “(y/n), i'm sorry.” he's trying his best, and he won't let you forget him just yet.

phoenix

oh boy, underneath his proud demeanor and cheeky grin (both prevalent when he was first crushing on you), he's scared for a number of reasons. do you think he’s boring? lame? clingy? though you've done nothing to suggest you think this way, he prematurely thinks someone else would be a better match for you when it's simply not true. at this, his smile cracks and his stature falls. he also thinks that you don't want to see him, so he gets more reserved for a while. however, if you knock on his room door or tap him on the shoulder to invite him to hangout or just talk, he instantly brightens up. it's like the sun peeking out from the overcast skies as he takes your hand to drag you around protocol.

kay/o

when he’s finally informed that it's a ‘crush’ that he's experiencing, he is beyond confused and also a little concerned. after all, what if it interferes with his mission to protect this earth? he's duty bound and dedicated to his task, so if these feelings become a problem, he'll need to keep his distance to prevent any further errors. at the same time, why should he let his mission stop him from being with you? hanging out with you and defending earth-1 don't have to be separate, right? and of course, the overarching question and the elephant in the room: would you reciprocate a robot’s feelings? someone who is made of metal parts and components, instead of flesh and bone, and who is driven by lines of code and systems, instead of a brain. he hasn't felt the pain of rejection yet, and he certainly doesn't want you to cause the feeling. he's once again left clueless, thinking about what to do about you. however, he decides that he's been through too much before to stop himself now.

Hyunjin seems like the type to avoid a break up as much as he can

If there was an issue between him and his S/O, he would try everything in his power to work it out without resorting to a break up

He would want to stay friends with his S/O, and would always promise them they would remain close

Hyunjin wouldn’t let him and his S/O’s relationship end badly, but more on a mutual agreement

His sadness comes out in anger, causing a screaming match between the two as he keeps denying them trying to break up with him

But when he starts getting comfortable, pray for his S/O

But after him and his S/O become a lot closer and start to understand each other’s limits when it comes to harsh jokes or rough play

Physically, he’s not at all gentle

When his S/O is just minding their business, he would take it as an invitation to tackle them to the ground

Or to pick them up and throw them over his shoulder

Even when just playfighting, he gets so competitive and his S/O has to beg him to lay off to let them breathe

It would seem to be a very intimate thing to say for Hyunjin, so he would want to say it with a lot of meaning, not just during a simple conversation

But other than that, he probably prefers to say how much he loves his S/O in different ways like helping them with stuff and affection

When he does tell them, it would be in a situation like if they’re at the beach together late at night

His S/O may have had a bad argument with their sibling or their parent, and Hyunjin would have taken them to get Chinese food and sit in the cold air on the hood of his car to make them forget about their situation

They may be crying in his arms, having suddenly not feeling well and needing some affection

But during that moment and seeing his S/O so vulnerable in front of him would make him soft

It would just slip out, and he wouldn’t regret it when they lift their head and give him a kiss straight on the lips as a “I love you too”

He doesn’t get jealous too often, but when he does he gets jealous

It’s not pretty, and a lot of the time I think his S/O would be able to tell quickly when he’s feeling replaced by someone

But he’d be that annoying type of jealous and be like “no I’m fine” when clearly he’s not

If it happens while they’re out at a party or something, he would be so passively aggressive towards the person he’s jealous of

But when him and his S/O get back home, he would become so touchy and upset about it

Always begs for their attention and love, since he felt so left out when they were out

Sometimes to annoy his S/O, he’ll pout his lips and lean towards them like he’s about to kiss them, but when they lean in he’ll turn away like nothing happened

Always gets himself pinned and getting smothered when his S/O has put up with it for too long

It would be very hard to get him to open up

He seems like he would never want to bother anyone, so telling his S/O about his worries makes him anxious

The only time he would really open up to them fully would be on days when he’s feeling more emotional than usual

He would lay in their arms and close his eyes as they rub their thumbs across his cheeks and talk about some things on his mind

It wouldn’t happen often as it was rare when he became comfortable to talk about his deep inner emotions

The only time he would ever get mad is if his S/O put themselves in danger or if someone said something about them

His most favourite moments would definitely be the ones when they’re laughing so hard and smacking each other because they can’t breathe

That would be one of his favourites because his S/O is like his best friend at the same time

But his most favourite moment would honestly be one of their first dates when he brought them to a ice cream parlour late at night

It was around 11 at night and he texted them asking if they wanted to hang out since both of them had had a harsh day

They sat on the dark beach and listened to the calm waves while eating their ice cream, snuggled together in huge coats trying to hide from the cold

Afterwards, they went to the water and splashed each other, their laughter ripping through the silent night beach

It would always be his absolute favourite because he believes it to be the day when he realised he wanted to stay with them

He’s actually quite clueless when it comes to being protective

He tries very hard to be a safe space for them and make them feel protected when their together, especially when they’re out somewhere

He does small things like keeping his arm around their torso and pulling them close to his body if someone they didn’t know was approaching them

But overall, if a bad situation was to rise like someone flirting with his S/O or someone just acting weird around them, he wouldn’t be sure what to do

A bit panicky and slightly afraid himself, but he would keep putting himself between the person and his S/O, no matter how much confrontation freaks him out

He would like to be protected in a way that’s emotional

He wants to be protected from his own thoughts, as he seems like an overthinker

So most of the time when he’s not feeling well, his S/O would distract him and always reassure him that he has nothing to worry about and that they love him very much no matter what

He would definitely be the type to “out-gift” his S/O on anniversaries

On anniversaries, they would always wake up to a whole bunch of their favourite flowers and Hyunjin cooking breakfast for them in the kitchen

Would always have them pick where they go

It’s always either they go out to a really romantic and fancy restaurant or they just order fast food and watch movies and make out in front of the tv

For everyday tasks, he does small things throughout the day just to help out his S/O

Like tying their hair back if it’s in their face or giving them one of his hoodies when he thinks they’re cold

They don’t even have to say anything, he just knows

“Babe, how did you know I wanted tea?” “You were giving off “give me tea” vibes for some reason-”

U - Ugly

He has a bad habit of turning the cold shoulder when he has a fight with his S/O

He doesn’t like talking things out, but prefers to just wait until he’s calmed down before going on like nothing happened

Sometimes it would piss his S/O off a lot

On the rare occasion they have really bad arguments, Hyunjin would threaten to sleep on the couch

But when his S/O says “go ahead”, he lowkey would regret it immediately

But he’s petty, and he’s not going to let them win the argument that easily

So he’d try to sleep by himself, but at some time in the early morning he would slip back underneath the covers with them and whisper an apology in their ear while pressing their back against his chest in a tight spoon

He can never keep his stubbornness up for too long. His S/O just has to be patient with him

V - Vanity

I don’t think his appearance is one of his main concerns, but just like everyone, he would sometimes become quite insecure

A lot of the time he wouldn’t even mention how he looked, unless his S/O complimented him, so they would assume that he’s confident in his appearance

But when he does doubt himself a bit and perhaps question his S/O’s attraction to him, he would keep it to himself

Until it kind of spills out randomly to them

Like his S/O would say something about a actor/actress’s body and Hyunjin would just say out of the blue “do you wish I looked like that?”

That’s when he would admit to recently not feeling too confident in himself

But perhaps all he needs is a reminding from his S/O how much they love him and his body

W - Whole

If Hyunjin had to go a few weeks or even months without his S/O (if he had to go on tour or something), he would gradually start missing them a lot

The first few days/weeks wouldn’t be so hard for him, cause the reassurance that they’re only a phone call away made him feel better

But after a while, he would grow homesick from them and miss their lips on his cheek and their hands on his body

Talking through the phone via skype or facetime would soon not be enough for either of them

He would become more down and become angrier easily

Would seek comfort in Felix, since he’s basically like a little brother to him who he can trust with anything

But when him and his S/O finally get to see each other again, they would not leave each other’s sides for a while

One of his favourite things to do is show his S/O his dances

Loves the fact that they just sit and watch him for hours in the practise room, being so entertained by his graceful moves

Gets so flustered when they keep complimenting his talent though

And also just to make them happy, he would learn dances to their favourite songs

His S/O has an album in their phone just for videos of his dancing

Having someone who would perhaps not understand why he can sometimes feel down randomly would make him frustrated and cause him to bottle things up

Even just seeing the negative trait in people during daily life makes him irritated

In general though, he would hate being rejected by his S/O

They always try to tell him to not take it personally when they say they don’t feel like cuddling one night or they don’t want to talk

He would always act like it doesn’t bother him, but in the back of his mind he’s questioning if he did something to upset them

Not excessively, but enough for it to wake up his S/O

Keeps an app in his phone that records when he sleep talks

Sometimes he would listen to them and hear his S/O responding to his weird statements

Never fails to make him slightly embarrassed though

Some people say that because Clarke almost shot Bellamy in 4x11 then it made sense if she shot him in the end and I just don't get it...

clarke also pressed a knife to l/xa's throat in season 3 but didn't kill her, remember?

i'm guessing the people saying that are ignoring this part of the storyline.

yes this is what happened but i definitely don't believe it was in clarke's character to do it. in fact i still think she was way more ooc than he ever was in s7 as much as people sh*t on him. i think that he was just trying to do what was right. was the SL bad? yes it was but his choices weren't. at some point, and that had to happen one way or the other and i was waiting for it, they had to disagree on the big stuff. that is something implied as banter in season 1, then turned into a plot in season 2 and in three its the rift between them but also what brings them back together, that is transcended (sorry for the choice of words) in 4 and even 5. six is just a romantic bellarke storyline and nobody can tell me otherwise.

the entire time i wasn't waiting for bellamy to realize what he ultimately did (despite the bad storyline) which was that they had to stop this cycle and find a way out. he had figured it back in season 5 when he was maneuvering between clarke and his sister and eventually negotiatied his 80 acres from octavia, hoping to get peace for his family which clarke could've become a part of. i think that he realized exactly what monty (and jasper) wanted him to-that yes, whenever they went chaos came and earth or any other planet was messy. they had to exclude themselves from the narrative in order to live a better life. yes, someone may want *clarke* for some *reason* they may always want her but they had to make a choice. monty realized that being in space was when they were at their happiest. same with jasper, really. i think bellamy realized that too but took it a step further and said yes space was hard and earth was hard but i want to make a home-

that's why he wanted those 80 acres. to built a home, for him, for his people and for clarke eventually when things settled down and mistakes were forgiven.

i think despite the recycled s3 SL the season 7 one carried a similar idea which was-we shall go to a different place OUTSIDE of this one we are in. we shall exclude ourselves from this narrative and find peace and live a good life.

earth was their doom the entire time, from the start. that's literally why the show was called the 100. going there is what defined them and that constant search for a home they never got to really is what bellamy needed too.

which they didnt get. they stayed on the beach but they'll die, the world ruined around them, no children, nothing...it's the worse message there is.

so yes, clarke may have pointed a gun at him, but she also almost sacrificed her mom, she also pressed a knife to L's throat. doesn't mean she could go through with it, so i dont believe this is the excuse some certain fans in some part of this fandom are looking for.

it wasn't in character for her. that's it. and at some point this had to stop-clarke had to step back and draw a line which she never did. this isn't her fault at all, it's the writer's and jason's.
