Thoughts on X-Men 97 S01E02 – Mutant Liberation Begins

TL;DR: X-Men 97’s butchering of the Trial of Magneto is more than just a bad adaptation. It’s an offensive stripping of a core part of the original story and of Magneto’s character.

The Trail of Magneto story arc in the Uncanny X-Men comics is an iconic turn for the character and the team; it is a transformation of an enemy turned friend. But that is not all the story represents. Delving deeper into its layers, one can pull out a lot of messages. The biggest one I relate to is the effects of compound systemic oppression when one has multiple identities marking them as a minority. But that’s missing in X-Men 97’s adaptation… even worse, it actively counters this point.

Before we get into the cartoon’s adaptation, let’s take a look at the comics, first.

The story begins in Uncanny X-Men #199, where Magneto and Kitty Pryde both attend a special reception at the National Holocaust Memorial in Washington, DC. It is here that Kitty is able to reconnect with folks who knew her family, who were victims in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and Magneto reconnects with people he knew there as well. They praise him for helping them survive.

But Freedom Force breaks into the reception and tries to arrest Magneto in the name of the US government. Magneto initially resists: “My land—all the countries of the world—turned their backs on me and mine when we were condemned to Hitler's death camps. Therefore, in return, I have sworn to deny them!” However, when he sees how afraid everyone around him is, he accepts their arrest and agrees to stand trial.

The story continues in Uncanny X-Men #200. Magneto’s trial by the international court of justice begins with England’s Attorney-General claiming there is no such thing as mutant oppression, which we the readers know, is a blatant lie. Despite this, Magneto remains calm, and when it’s his turn to speak, he says the following:

“My dream, from the start, has been the protection and preservation of my own kind, mutants. To spare them the fate my family suffered in Auschwitz and do not tell me such a thing cannot happen again, because that is a lie! You humans slaughter each other because of the colour of your skin, or your faith or your politics—or for no reason at all—too many of you hate as easily as you draw breath, what's to prevent you adding us to that list?!”

But the trial attracts the attention of the Fenris twins; the Nazi offspring of Baron Von Strucker. They are there to kill Magneto, Xavier, and Gabrielle Haller (AKA David Haller’s mother), because she is Jewish and was an enemy of their father. Magneto risks his life to save everyone in the trial from them, but Xavier’s heart gives out and he nearly dies in Magneto’s arms, until he’s whisked away by his alien girlfriend who says she can save him. Xavier makes Magneto vow to stand with the X-Men and teach the New Mutants in his absence.

So, let’s keep in mind how intertwined Magneto’s Jewish and mutant identities are in this story; how they interact and shape his views and actions together. Because X-Men 97 is about to take all that away.

In X-Men 97 S01E02, when Val Cooper and the UN show up to arrest Magneto, he surrenders peacefully to try and gain the X-Men’s trust. And Magneto’s speech is very different from that of the comics:

“As a boy, my people's homes were burned to ash, because we dared to call God by another name. Then, my people hunted me with those who had once hunted them. I was a freak, born a mutant. An abomination to their misnamed gods. In history's sad song, there is a refrain. Believe differently, love differently, be of different sex or skin, and be punished. We sing this song to one another. The oppressed become oppressors.”

And it is not the Fenris twins who show up, but just generic Friends of Humanity baddies, led by X-Cutioner.

This adaptation may contain the surface-level story beats of the original, but it misses the heart of the matter; it misses the point!

Magneto’s cartoon speech separates him from his Jewish community. That is something the Magneto I know would never do. In the comics, his part about how humans are always killing each other speaks much more volumes, because he is speaking about his experience not just as a mutant, but as a Jewish person who has survived a genocide. Magneto, nor anyone with more than identity, has to choose between them. This show now says otherwise.

What I hate most of all about his cartoon speech though, is the line, “the oppressed become oppressors.” This is straight up cloaked white supremacist rhetoric; the fear that if racial/ethnic minorities are given equal rights, we will take over and start oppressing white settlers. And no, I’m not saying minorities are exempt from carrying prejudices against others, obviously. What I’m saying is, oppression is a systemic problem that largely stems from colonialism, and to paint oppressed people as a danger that needs to be oppressed or will oppress you, is a terrible idea used by colonizers to justify the system of colonialism. It is not based on fact.

The message of Magneto’s speech in the comics is that he has personally suffered from the hands of oppression before, and does not want others to suffer more. The message of magneto’s speech in the cartoon is that all people are bad, end of story. There is no nuance, there is no larger context at play, and there is no real grit to the words said! They have de-clawed Magneto’s character, and they have ripped away what he stands for… who he stands for.

Hi friend! I was wondering if you had any favorite Israeli/Hebrew children's books! Also any fave Israeli musicians??

Hello, my lovely! :D How are you?

Ooooh, do I! Man, you're gonna regret asking me this. XD Sorry, not sorry... So shall we start with Israeli/Hebrew kids' books?

Anything by Yehuda Atlas (יהודה אטלס), but especially And That Kid is Me (והילד הזה הוא אני). Short humorous stories, written in rhymes, perfectly capturing how baffling the world can be for a kid, and how silly adults can seem, or just what things can sometimes feel like for a child. It's one of those books that work, funny and essential, 'coz it's so true. He just gets kids.

Another one that I love, and am probably one of the few Israeli kids who even know this book, is Siamina and the Cats of Yemin Moshe (סיאמינה והחתולים של ימין משה) by Holocaust survivor Uri Orlev (אורי אורלב. He's more well known for his books about that period of time, which are also highly recommended, but I only dared read them when I was older). Jerusalem is known for its many stray cats, and the book is a love fest for cats and Jerusalem, with some historical sites becoming in the book the "homes" of the cats.

David Gershtein, who crafted the engravings for the book, is a pretty popular Israeli artist, and you can find some of his creations all over the country, and even entire shops dedicated to his works.

Last one ('coz I don't wanna burden you too much, but lemme know if you want more recs!) that I really loved as a kid, was Yael's House (הבית של יעל) by Miriam Rot (מרים רות). It was about a girl who has a home, but she wants a house that would be all her own. She tries all sorts of solutions, including taking over the space under the kitchen table... Not gonna lie, as a kid I was inspired to follow in her footsteps, but my parents were not impressed.

Now, as for Israeli musicians! You have stumbled onto dangerous ground, my friend, since I'm a music addict, and in love with the Hebrew language, so songs in Hebrew are something I can go on about for freaking years...

I'll share with you the link to two unlisted playlists that I made on YouTube. One is of some of my fave Israeli songs (though I started it years ago, so sadly, I see some vids have been deleted or made private, and there are literally hundreds of songs on the list, meaning I'm not sure which ones are missing), but also with a few thrown in 'coz I think they're good for people who wanna know Israeli culture and popular Israeli songs, and the other is one that I started making with songs connected in different ways to the current war we're in. They're not all faves, but I thought they capture a moment in time, so I wanted to have them grouped together. I'm actually not done with either list, the latter I really just started not that long ago, so you can expect them to grow.

If we're talking specific Israeli musicians, I find it hard to answer, I think almost every singer or songwriter has at least one good song to offer, and likewise whenever I wanna name one, I feel like adding, "Except for this song... and that one..." No musician is great all the time. But I guess some of my faves (where I like more songs than I don't) include Ivri Lider, Berry Sakharof, Yehuda Poliker, Ran Danker, Harel Ska'at, Chanan ben Ari, Narkis, Eliad, Amir Dadon, Avraham Tal, Marina Maximilian, Achinoam Nini (Noa), Sheila Ferber, Gilad Segev, Ofra Chaza, Meni Berger, Yardena Arazi, Natan Goshen, Keren Peles, Izhar Ashdot, Nurit Galron, and the bands Beit Ha'bubot, Ha'Yehudim, Metropolin, Ethnix, Mashina and Synergia.

I was thinking I should add at least one of these vids to my reply, and for whatever reason, the one that started playing itself in my head (where there is always music) was a song first released in 1993, אדמה חמה (Hot Earth) by Shlomo Gronich and the Shva Choir (Sheba is the English pronunciation of Shva). I love this song, I think the vid was very cool for its time, and I'm still never gonna forgive the MTV viewers who gave it last place in a video music awards. The song incorporates Hebrew and Amharic, both Semitic languages, the latter being the language spoken by Ethiopian Jews. You can actually listen to the whole special album (inspired by the story of the Ethiopian Jewish community's journey to Israel) here.

But just for the fun of throwing in a gay themed song as well, here's התשמע קולי (Will You Hear My Voice), a love poem for a man, originally written by an Israeli poet called Rachel (full name: Rachel Bluwstein Sela), but it's performed here by only men, and no one changed the pronouns, which makes it a mlm song to me. It's so pretty and sad (Rachel is believed to have written the poem to a former lover, a man she even thought at one point she would marry, but WWI tears them apart and they never meet again. She wrote this poem, after getting the news that she's terminally ill), it fills my soul at the same time as it tugs on my heart.

My cousin’s bat mitzvah is today!

I’m so proud of her. And it is not lost on me that it is on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Our grandmother is the only living child of her mother—who is the only survivor from her family in Hungary. Of her several siblings. Today I pray for them and their memories. And we recommit ourselves to our faith in their honor. We live and find joy because we fought hard for our right to do so. They tried to kill us all and make sure we never existed and here she is—my cousin!!! Enjoying a time honored tradition and becoming an adult in our community.

Also, her Torah portion is wildly good.

Parashat Beshalach / פָּרָשַׁת בְּשַׁלַּ ?!!! Are you kidding me‽????? That’s like the best one!!!!!!

Beshalach (“When He Let Go”) describes the splitting of the Red Sea and the song the Israelites sing upon crossing through. In the desert, God sweetens bitter water and provides manna and quail. The portion ends recounting the victory of the Israelites against an attack by the Amalekites.

Like…for those who don’t know, Jews read the Torah in order and every week is a new Torah portion. You don’t really get to choose any chapter. You just get the one you get when it’s your week (which is usually near your birthday).

For reference, my Torah portion was about what to do when you see a dead body on the side of the road (I actually did like that one and I think my sermon was really good and I’m still proud of it tbh), but it’s a lot harder to make a random Leviticus chapter work than THE freaking EXODUS.

I’m just so proud of her. I wanna talk about her community service project but I think that would involve too much identifying information. But she’s an extremely good, caring young woman and I’m so full of joy for her that im actually pretty tearful about it.

My fellow Jews, please — amidst your memories of the horrors and losses and in your mourning for those many family members and their descendants who should still be with us— don’t forget: we are still fucking here. Absolutely fascinating how we've gotten to this point of hundreds of Jews saying "hey this thing doesn't represent us!" and "Not in our name" while not-Jews say "hey stop being antisemetic" at these exact said Jews for saying a thing non-Jewish people don't like. And yes there are Jews saying this too, but a very large number are also saying Not Us and we're just. Ignoring them. Speaking over them. Silencing them. Then act like that isn't fucking antisemetic??

Also how said non-Jews are predominantly white Christian Zionists who also want Jews dead alongside Muslims because they think Israel belongs to Christians and in government positions of country's who have historically hated Jews and wanted them dead or legislated against them at the very VERY least.

And here we are still, in this western society that has a huge ass history of antisemitism that has existed since way after world war II with how badly they're still treated, calling freaking Jews antisemetic for not agreeing to the non-Jew WHITE CHRISTIANS WHO HATE THEM with their opinion of literally just "shut up for being the wrong kind of Jew" since that is, you know, really antisemetic but hey since they said it and they're defending Israel they're apparently totally allowed to tell Jews to shut up apparently when they "say the wrong thing".

Fuck. We are in desperate need of genocide studies in the US. Because people are genuinely arguing that Nazism— and thus the white supremacy which inspired it— is an aberration of European philosophical tradition, rather than the end conclusion of “Western” ideologies.

“Nazism is uniquely evil” implies it cannot happen here and that it originally happened by freak happenstance. If you singularize the actions of the Nazis, you lose critical analysis of what ideas inspired them (see: US genocide of First Nations People) and how the Germans developed their tactics of oppression and murder (see: German genocide of the Herero and the Nama people between 1904-1908).

I believe it’s time we call this kind of rhetoric what it is: genocide denialism and Holocaust revisionism. It denies the European-created genocides before and after the Holocaust, and it rewrites the history leading up to the Holocaust to purposefully cover up the fact that it can and will happen here. Over and over and over. Such rhetoric also (purposefully) denies victims of genocides the world over solidarity with each other. To justify the destruction of Poland, Hitler asked, “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” Would you deny the son of a Shoah survivor the right to march with Armenians? Or would you, like the German state, accuse him of de-singularizing and relativizing the Holocaust and report him to the local antisemitism commissioner?

If you treat Nazism as unlike anything else that’s ever happened or will happen, then you don’t need to worry about it and the tragedies it created happening ever again. “Never again” becomes an empty promise. This type of rhetoric gives people the opportunity to wipe their hands of any culpability in the rise and reproduction of similar systems or other genocides, and they can use this singularity rhetoric to position themselves into a moral category despite supporting similar ideas. That Nazism and the Shoah happened means it was possible and still is possible, among any people.

The “massive, systematic, and efficient nature of” Nazi oppression, brutality, atrocity and its genocidal tactics and policies is a function of modernity and “Western” Enlightenment rationality. It is not an aberration.

Just thinking about like... how Vaspider reacted like you were saying "actually it would be fine if we were genocided, there would be absolutely no negative consequences" and you're literally just like "hey we are not currently actively in the middle of the Holocaust, we have time to stop this" and also "this genocide would not play out exactly like the Shoah in terms of long-term effects".

Like... every single queer death is a massive tragedy! If every queer person was wiped out, yeah, newer generations would both be unsafe and divorced from their local and national history! It would have serious long term effects, aside from just the loss of human life. But it wouldn't be a 1 to 1 with jewish genocide.

that’s the biggest issue for me with the holocaust comparisons is like. there are a lot of young, especially white, trans people who are convinced that this is the end. they’re catastrophizing and convincing themselves and each other that they’re gonna die or that they can’t access care when they actually can, and it’s legitimately hurting people. like the emergency order in missouri does say that people will have to have an autism screening, but not everyone is enforcing that. and we don’t know whether that means autistic people can’t access care but freaking out and saying no autistic people can is keeping autistic people from trying to get appointments before it’s too late. ugh. idk. the catastrophizing is just not helping, and it’s coming from majority white people which is kind of irritating.

Parents were once again like "oh but Death is way too scary for the kids, the movie is no good" and once again I find myself so miffed about this mindset!

Kids love scary and challenging things in cartoons! Do parents forget their childhood as soon as they get kids of their own? When I was 10 my fave film was Notre Dame. I even understood the implied torture scene and what the crushing of those ants represented after and was so freaked out by Frolo but was utterly overjoyed to see him defeated!

My fave book was a greek one where the entire theme was Cat genoside with no filter whatsoever through the Narration of the Last black cat a.k.a book title that sees all of this unfold. (He's not really the last and there's a happy ending but you don't know that till the end) Baby's first holocaust book essentially and still impactful.

Think of warrior cats or redwool but like no magic just how society can reach from discrimination and superstition to mass murder and unjustifiable cruelty to the innocent. It's still my most read book by all time since I was 7.

Coraline scared the shit out of me when I was 11 but her bravery against such a powerful opponent spoke to me like no other thing and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Wanted to watch again and again.

No Disney princess and pretty safe colorful worlds spoke to me like Misses Brisby from the dark as hell environment she had to navigate in Secret of Nihm. She was my role model and hero.

Kid's films should be dark. To teach things through "real" adversity and not cookie cutter problems. I guarantee many kids will think of Puss overcoming someone as powerful and scary as Death as empowerment for them too.

And not all kid's films are for all demographics. If you have a toddler under five or a more sensitive older kid who can't understand or handle it yet, do your research and show them something lighter. Do your job and parent properly!

And news flash, the 10-15 demographic who are still pretty much kids won't be entertained forever by inane colorful drivel. Movies and a cartoons are an excellent way to introduce heavier themes to them in controlled environments.

They are really not doing any favors to your kids by coddling them. Childish innocence lasting this long is such a selfish myth us adults want to preserve but kids aren't innocent, they are just inexperienced and not letting them learn how to approach life via fiction or example is plain bad parenting!

A film showing Death scary and imposing as he is, showing panic attacks and shameful feelings of succumbing to fear but still finding the strength through bonds with others and learning to face the problem is downright important to your kid's development!

I'd argue even more important its to learn how to deal with mortality. Anxieties manifest way earlier than you think. And presenting everything sugarcoated feels to a kid like the lies they are.

Kids are smart. And shouldn't be treated like cute mindless dolls in the first place.

I have never felt like I more should be at the Palestine rally. It's the national one today, the situation is increasingly dire, and I already feel bad about not being able to participate in the BAE blockade last Thursday cause I'm still on probation at work. I really really really really needed to go to Glasgow today. Unfortunately I'm so tired and everything hurts and I can't really stand or walk well at the moment (and these rallies are profoundly inaccessible from that front, it's always like 3 hours of standing followed by an hour of walking).

but like. I hate not going it feels so pathetic to skip when shit just keeps getting worse in Gaza and Israel keeps getting more gleefully unaccountable.

I haven't gone today - I would have needed to leave like an hour ago and I am a long way off even being able to get out of bed with how Pain my hips and feet are - but I need to figure out how to square the days I can't go to these protests (esp since as I say I'm still beating myself up about Thursday) with the fact that even in weeks that I do go it feels pathetic and like not even a drop in the ocean against the enormity of this. like I feel like I need to be doing more and I do think that going to a protest once a week is the absolute flat minimum I could be doing but idk how to do more with the resource I have right now, and so it feels shit to not even be doing that.

Idk I hope it's well attended I hope the solidarity is felt I hope that next time there's a more direct action additional to the weekly rallies I'll be able to help. I hope the miracle comes and Palestinians stop being murdered I hope Israel is held to some international account I hope that all the millions who are grieving loved ones and the millions who are living through this will have room to heal and mourn in peace someday soon I hope that Gaza and all of Palestine can be rebuilt to a place of joy I hope that change comes swiftly and that these are the death throes of the Israeli state and that the Palestinians (and Yemenis, and Jordanians, and Lebanese, and Syrians, but mostly the Palestinians who have lost their land and their homes and their loved ones and their freedom for generations) who have spent generations holding their pain in the face of a constant onslaught and who are facing unimaginable loss, will, after 75+ years, be free to live. I hope that babies born in this genocide will grow up into a free Palestine and age into being the last survivors of an unimaginable past, telling their great grandchildren about a horror that seems unimaginable in a Palestine where nobody is in the habit of ducking bombs.

I hope that in 20 years the general conversation will treat Israeli occupation and genocide with the revulsion we treat apartheid South Africa or Nazi Germany and that people will have the luxury of forgetting that they ever stood in favour of this scale of murderous injustice, because looking at this in the cold light of history surely not even the fucking freaks who still stand with Israel will be able to pretend this was ever anything other than genocide. We will wonder, like we do with the Holocaust or apartheid or segregation, who could ever have cheered this on. It will seem unimaginable, once it's over, that it could have felt so normal to watch it happen for the better part of a century and side with those carrying out the genocide.

I do believe that Palestine will be free but I hope with all my heart that it comes sooner than seems possible because every day of this is horror and it shouldn't be borne and it's being allowed to happen by those in power. who also aren't accountable.

but public protest and democratic outcry won't turn the tide - Israel doesn't care who condemns it as long as people in power support it, and in the UK for one, those in power have made it very clear they don't believe they're accountable to the people.

mass movements and voter complaints haven't compelled the government or Labour leadership to move on policing powers, on trans murders, on austerity, on the imprisonment and killing of immigrants, on any of the home policy that produces wildly unpopular reactionary violence. they don't fucking care what we think and there's no way to push through by public protest or by voting because public opinion doesn't have any fucking power over them.

but that doesn't make it useless. solidarity matters. it matters that hundreds of millions around the world continue to witness and condemn. it matters to refuse to look away or allow your consent to be pretended. It helps push corporations to fear for their bottom line, which helps give permission to those in government with reservations to raise their voices. It helps people who haven't thought about it to look and find out how fucked this is and not take the Israeli narrative and the mainstream press narrative as a given. BDS and direct action are effective when there's vocal numbers behind it and this is part of that.

(and stuff is shifting, it's just so slow, it's too slow when so many people are dying. national governments are beginning to hold Zionism to task and to refuse to work with Israel. The UK and US and Germany are always going to be the slowest to be dragged into moral condemnation because these are the states which had the most invested in the creation of Israel in the first place, and frankly bc idk about Germany but both the US and UK are pretty deep down the road of unaccountable totalitarian reactionary pseudo democracy innit. change is coming and it's coming because globally we're not letting up)

but yeah like solidarity and public protest is vital, but it's slow going, and sustainability matters, and I know I shouldn't beat myself up for missing one of the weekly demos in order to recoup (and to hopefully be in a position to take on more of a role in future non-standard actions). It feels horrendous to be doing nothing but as long as I keep showing up in future and I keep boycotting and talking about stuff and I keep looking for opportunities to get involved, my absence at a demo doesn't make or break anything. as long as I know that I have a responsibility to keep coming back. Something is more than nothing. while I hope and pray that this will end soon, even if there's a ceasefire there's still years of fight ahead to a free Palestine. a week missing a protest is a blip, as long as it doesn't mean I abdicate my responsibility to keep moving going forward and to keep fighting for a free Palestine.

Israel getting attacked for minding its own business offers as easy a statement about good and evil as it gets.  Naturally, the left is confused.  Baby decapitators didn’t mean to provide such an easy choice.  That’s Hamas and not Israel, for the record, which seems odd to those who claim to seek justice while doing everything they can to undermine it.  Excusers for devilishness can’t be double agents, as that would take craftiness.  Observations based in truth perplexes them the most.  They can’t determine who good guys are but surely get everything right otherwise.

The same shrewd assessors of character who thought professional serial killer Andrew Cuomo was a prophet struggle to discern who’s right and wrong in a war where bloodthirsty intruders slaughtered anyone they could find who was Jewish.  Struggling with trivialities like facts shouldn’t deter the pursuit for righteousness, so keep lecturing a country about avoiding inflicting casualties as it carefully targets those who did the precise opposite.

Fish don’t spot water.  The inability to perceive truth is not a new delusion, which is why sufferers are unaware they keep committing violations.  The same thorough reality fans urge you to enjoy a purring economy where you can buy every single item desired thanks to inflation’s irrelevance.  Spot those who get experiments wrong by how they profess a belief in science.

A righteous entity fighting for self-preservation is ordered to delay with temperance by every smug lecturer who sees violence without bothering to check who went first.  The type is crucial, too, as in how massacring festival attendees differs from collateral damage when attempting to eliminate festival attendee massacrers.  There will be a ceasefire after every single Hamas operative has been sent to their eternal destination.  They will be the only virgins.

People who know they’re better than you are divided between lecturing about how both sides are responsible and thinking the victim asked for it.  The very nuanced approach to crime blames burglars and homeowners for burglary.  Announcing the homeowner deserved it for hoarding resources that perpetuate inequality is the new complex approach to fighting lawbreaking by allowing it.

Settlers usually look for something useful, which renders the whole narrative of Israel ripping off land.  There’s a strange fixation on possessing an otherwise worthless strip in a lousy neighborhood.  Terror enablers didn’t want until Jews had it.  Anyone with a simpleton of a sibling who dealt with jealousy over an item that would go unwanted were it not possessed by a nemesis.  Extending rights to everyone within its boundaries must be part of their trickery.

Pretending the only tolerant country in the area is a terror state like America where everyone who’s not the preferred race or religion gets routinely repressed is a reflex for those who cheer from afar for the crudest Gaza-originated rockets.  They’re not going to show support in person, as Yasser Arafat’s intellectual descendants don’t allow rainbow flags for some reason.

Wanting to be left alone is the most horrifying notion possible to liberals.  A philosophy that doesn’t allow for dangerous concepts like doing your own thing is horrified by Israel sitting there and not bothering anyone.  American business proprietors sympathize.

Nagging Israel comes naturally to meddlers.  Not content with hassling successful entrepreneurs and law-abiding gun owners domestically, professional busybodies also look to irk abroad.  The annoying tendency get exponentially sinister when they ally with nefarious forces who won’t let that one Jewish republic just exist. 

The one religion that’s been persecuted more than any other sadly knows nothing on this rotten globe changes.  Accusing Judaism of colonial cruelty is nothing new to a faith that routinely gets blamed for global ills.  Wanting to live on their terms without hassling others is the conspiracy that’s true.

Twisted lectures about their need to protect civilians while pursuing human demons who actively targeted their own is merely a manifestation of wanting desperately to believe the wrong and awful thing.  If that doesn’t make sense, you understand the left.  It’s uncanny how readily professional Jew-haters wanted to believe Israel is dying to commit war crimes.  The only thing missing is actuality.

Wrongly accusing Israel of awful things truly being done to it sums up its sane and decent foes.  Seething loathing of an innocent nation valiantly fighting against the obviously guilty is not merely anti-Semitism, although palpable contempt for Judaism shows how ugly bigotry remains even as society’s trappings get prettier.

Israel represents the West, which is what genuine villains think is villainous.  Brutality’s enthusiastic defenders express a vague sense that Israel is nothing but a band of invading oppressors, which is a common complaint amongst those who benefit from the natural rights and prosperity which follows.  The class warfare front extends to thriving Jews.  Anti-Semitism is just one more symptom of deranged resentment from life’s losers.

Oh god I reblogged a post about the bullshit of proship/antiship discourse the other day. It's SOOO STUPID!!! Especially in a time where books about queer people and informative books for children about how to spot and report csa are being pulled from public libraries and banned in various places under the guise of them being "morally reprehensible" and "bad for the children."

There is no way to dictate what people can and can't write without opening the door to fascism and oppressive censorship. There's no way to make a line without risking people pushing that line until it hurts real marginalised people.

Like as a Jewish person I generally hate holocaust comparisons, but like... idk I always go back to the nazi book burnings at Die Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, and the targeted harassment of Magnus Hirschfeld. So much important information about sex, gender, and sexuality were lost and suppressed. So much important research. Important work into the normalisation of sex and desire.

It has lasting impacts even now into the field of sexology, which is still treated as either a joke or some sort of perverted fake field for creeps to use as an excuse to take advantage of people. When I studied sexology in university, so much of it always came back to the idea that censorship is inherently detrimental to sexual liberation. Which in turn my gender studies professors all agreed is necessary for queer and female liberation as well.

Like this goes so much further and deeper than fandoms and ships, and it's so reductive and pointless to turn it into a fandom debate. Especially in the current political climate around the world. And to turn it into fandom drama or even to morally posture about being proship or an anti does a huge disservice to the people fighting on the front lines of queer and sexual liberation. It harms trans people and people of colour who are being targeted through censorship.

Idk in a world where consensual kink is still illegal in most places, where queer theory and critical race theory are being censored, where sex workers and kinky folks are actively fighting tooth and nail for your right to watch porn without the government telling you what you can and can't jack off too... In a world where FOSTA/SESTA is being used to actively harm sex workers and the victims of trafficking they claim to be helping. It's just... idk it's almost actively, wilfully, maliciously ignorant to think ship discourse is important enough to harass people over. To think that censoring fandom content is useful and morally correct.

I'm not so fussed about call out posts and block lists personally cause I don't care if "queer is a slur" "no kink at pride" "if you're not vocally antiship then you're proship which means I can make up beliefs to assign to you and then send people to harass you for it" assholes try to bother me. The block button is fun to press, and I've got thick skin and an actual understanding of the real world.

But yeah, they can make internet spaces pointlessly and actively hostile to people, especially people whose mental health is already fragile. And I've heard so many definitions of proship that it's soooooo clear no one actually has a real definition of it, and just use it as shorthand for "this person is a freak who makes things I don't like, and I think that means they should be punished in the court of public opinion for it."

idk I've seen too many sex workers and transfem people and Jewish people accused of being paedophiles and perverts and "proship" for daring to not follow Christian ideas of sexual purity and morality. I've been the Jewish, transfem sex worker getting called those things. I watched a trans woman get harassed off tumblr entirely for having an armpit fetish and daring to talk about it on her own blog.

I've seen countless people who called out racist/queerphobic/transmisogynistic trends in fandom get the "proship" label slapped on them just to drive them out of fandom spaces so they could keep their bigoted headcanons. I've seen it put on people who ship two unrelated characters who happened to know each other as children because "that's basically incest." I've seen it slapped on someone who wrote about adults in a consensual relationship who happened to have a 10 year age gap (34 vs 44).

And yeah, I've seen it put on people who write paedophilic incest fanfics, which is something I personally would prefer no one ever wanted to write about. But I also acknowledge that if I try to make that an actual rule, it will eventually become corrupted into something used for the oppression of marginalised people.

I know that I shouldn't be trusted with the power to dictate the actions (and especially the thoughts) of others. I know that thoughtcrimes aren't real, and that the world is so much bigger and messier and more complicated than fandom. I know that the moment I allow myself to become pro-censorship in any capacity, I've already lost and fascism has already gained a new foothold in the world.

And most of all, I know that all art including fandom art is something the artist and the people interacting with it are both choosing to consent to. That this consent can be revoked at any time, and that no one has the right to decide what anyone else can and cannot consent to. That all fiction is a scene, not a new reality, and that the consent of the real people involved is more important than what's actually going on within the scene.

What you wrote in that post about the course for teachers meant to prevent antisemitism in schools is proof that it is much needed and something like that should have been implemented yesterday. There is no present day history being taught as far as I know. I am not using contemporary because it leads up to the 21st century but not in detail and it only mentions a couple of events.

So the context would be... non existent.

I do not follow the news and the few I have been following are plainly stating facts. X is doing atrocities to Z. You can place either team. I do not deny your claim that some outlets are probably using discriminatory tactics just for kicks.

The thing is that Romanian pupils are not watching news on foreign politics. If anything, they would care about the war a few km away from us.

Let's address antisemitism and when it's discussed during History lessons:

- WW2 (I am no longer aware when exactly it's taught but I learnt about it in years 7, 8, 11 and 12)

- The new school subject added this year for 11th graders: The History of the Jewish People/Holocaust (it's a thing since like uwu yesterday uwu and the information is the same as in history lessons except with the emphasis on the Jewish community obvi)

- maybe other subject which tackle communities, tolerance and maybe even Religion (I remember learning a lot in primary school about their history)

So, please enlighten me why should this contemporary political/military issue be suddenly discussed in class?

Can we trace a timeline that would lead to understanding the reasons behind this war? Yes.

Does a teacher going to class and shouting "hey, kids, stop watching dances on tiktok and let's discuss the news which are very antisemitic" sound like a plausible thing? Definitely, but not really in a country that already supports Israel in this war and which is already the reason why Israel has a significant community number of citizens from here. So to sum up... If you want to call out antisemitism in mass media, you approach zealots, uneducated adults and the media outlets themselves, not freaking children who don't even know where fucking Palestine and Israel are and don't know shit about politics to begin with!

The apparent reason why the name Sinnoh stuck over Hisui is actually sad. There's hints that in the 200 hundred years between PLA and D/P/Pl, a massive region changing catastrophe happen changed the way the way the region was shaped, made all the region exclusive Pokémon go extinct and buried alot of the one text with it all. And most of the stuff known about Hisui comes from what Galaxy wrote down since they wrote home about it.

Hisui had a massive clan war that wiped out most of the people living there, had colonisers invade them and started putting their own spin on Hisui culture AND THEN was nearly wiped off of the planet with the tiny amount of their culture remained either buried over time or warped.

Game freak reeeally likes to dunk on Hisui.

This movie is listed as Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and a comedy. I’ve seen this movie so many times in the past 11 years. Definitely one of those What The Fuck did I just watch? movies. Something to watch when you’re baked, or even if you just like the strange and unusual, as Lydia describes herself.

I made myself a fancy cup of coffee with whip cream and chocolate sauce in preparation for this movie. Wanted something delicious to go with the creepy.

We follow Chase Williamson, Dave, around as he is on a drug called "Soy Sauce" and trying to find out what happened to his friend John, played by Rob Mayes.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that they got Paul Giamatti to play a role. Like what are the odds he’s in this movie. I don’t even think that this movie went into theaters. I found out about it from a guy I was seeing at the time it came out and it is based off of a book he read so I’m not sure if it went straight to… you know what… l’ll just leave this hear. It isn’t important. What is, a girl just burst into several snakes and a door knob turned into a dick!

Now we have this meat man, literal man made out of different meats (whole turkey, ribs, sausage links).

There is the randomest band. They sing “Camel Holocaust” its definitely not s song like I’ve ever heard before. The beat is really good though. We are seeing this band as a background to how they got Soy Sauce.

We Meet Robert Marley, played by Tai Bennett. He does a really good job of playing someone reaaaaaally creepy. He is going about proving Dave that his abilities are real. All I have to say is high or not, a lot of what happens in this movie makes a lot of sense. Makes you think.

If you know anything about Doug Jones, it should give you some insight into the level of creep factor he brings to this movie.. I swear in Buffy it’s the creepiest.

Now I do have to say that the ghost door and using someone who is an amputee to open it was a pretty unique thing. We have Amy, played by Fabianne Therese. She is missing her left hand and she uses it to turn the doorknob.

In Austria people mark Jewish people's doors with yellow stars. 

If Israel wants to prevent antisemitism, it should stop claiming that Zionism is the belief of all Jewish people when hundreds of thousands of Jewish people around the world are protesting against their brutalist regime. When it's the US government arresting Jewish people, including rabbis, for protesting Israel's genocide. When holocaust survivors are speaking up against Israel, for Palestinians.

I'm from Pittsburgh. My mom lives 2 miles away from the Tree of Life synagogue. If you are so concerned with antisemitism, work with Jewish people protesting Israel to stop the genocide of Palestinian people.

Because you know who's going to be most affected by the antisemitism Israel is stirring up? Jewish people living in countries other than Israel. You know which neonazis are taking advantage of this opportunity to stir up hate against Jews? The ones living in the US, and other countries that aren't Israel.
