Halloween Movie Night

Pairing: Peter Parker x MJ (MCU)

Word Count: 1k

Summary: Peter and MJ enjoy a scary movie night in her apartment to celebrate the beginning of Halloween season.

Content includes: Fluff, cookies, kissing, and a tongue burnt on hot chocolate but nothing else too steamy. There is one quick mention of the pandemic.

I’m a little late to the game and new to fanfic challenges, but I would love to submit this for @thefanficfaerie‘s daily mini-series for the Spooktacular Halloween OTP Writing Challenge. I ship Peter and MJ and think this is such a cute idea with awesome prompts! I may branch into other characters though! Hope you enjoy!

“It’s the first day of Halloween, Peter. We’re watching scary movies!” MJ exclaimed.

“The… the first day of Halloween?” Peter questioned as a grin spread across his face.

He stepped into MJ’s living room and removed his mask. Her parents were both working late, so they would have the apartment to themselves for the evening. Peter then closed the window to keep the crisp, autumn air outside.

“Horror and the occult deserve more than a single night. Besides, what else is there to do in a pandemic besides watch scary movies?” MJ said with a raised brow.

“I guess I’m just used to wearing a costume every day,” Peter laughed as he pulled her close for a kiss.

“Oh, that reminds me. I brought some provisions for THE first day of Halloween,” Peter said.

Peter removed the backpack from his shoulder. This was his third new backpack this month. Inside were Halloween themed pajamas and socks as well as hot chocolate packets and Pillsbury ready-to-bake ghost cookies.

“You do realize these are all just marketing ploys to take advantage of people during holidays. Social constructs that cause people to feel the need to buy all of these items just to fit in and meet Instagram’s demands for what is portrayed as necessary to celebrate a holiday,” MJ declared.

“I hear you but… that lady that owns the grocery store with the sweet old dog. You know, the one that lays behind the counter, but never stops wagging his tail. The one in lower Manhattan. She offered me a discount for stopping another robbery tonight,” Peter replied quickly.

MJ raised her brow again.

“I protested, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer,” Peter said earnestly.

“I suppose we can be that couple for one evening,” MJ said pointedly. “But don’t even think about posting a picture with a caption like ‘My Boo!’ tonight.”

“You got it boss,” Peter said as he went to the bathroom to change into the Halloween pajamas.

He returned to find MJ in the corresponding set of skeleton pajamas as the oven’s preheat setting beeped. Peter placed the refrigerated cookies on a sheet pan and set out the mugs for the hot cocoa. MJ set up the movie.

“So, what’re we watching?” Peter asked.

“I picked Scream for tonight. I figured I would ease you into my horror movie collection starting with a 90’s classic, and we’ll get to the more obscure films later.”

“You don’t want to ease me in with like Monsters Inc.?” Peter smiled sheepishly.

“You fight crime daily, but you’re afraid of a little scary movie?” MJ teased.

Peter scooped MJ up in his arms, kissing her forehead. They snuggled onto the couch. MJ was still in Peter’s arms, laying on his chest.

“You know, you make a pretty cute skeleton,” Peter whispered.

Peter lightly outlined the picture of an arm bone down MJ’s shirt sleeve. He traced it the whole way to her fingertips. Then, he grasped her hand within his.

“Shut up, Parker,” MJ giggled.

She had started to trace the bones on Peter’s matching pajamas. Suddenly, MJ felt Peter’s hand graze her chin. He lightly pulled her face to look upward at him. Sitting up now, Peter bent to kiss MJ from above. He saw that in a movie once. Their lips fit together perfectly. He squeezed her hand and she squeezed back. All the chaos, heartache, and struggles that came with being Spider-Man melted away as Peter breathed in MJ’s honey shampoo scent in her curly hair as strands of it tickled his face. They kissed the world away.

However, as Peter’s heart began to hammer in his chest, the timer from the oven parted their lips. MJ turned over, now properly oriented to look him in the eye and gave him a final peck. She then went to the kitchen to bring the cookies in. Then, she set them down on the coffee table in front of the couch with the hot chocolates. They each took one, but Peter put it in his mouth too quickly.

“Ooo… ooo! Too hot!” Peter mumbled over his burnt tongue and waived his hand.

He reached for his cup of hot chocolate.

“Peter wai—”

Peter’s eyes went wide as the steaming liquid passed his lips.

“It’s called hot chocolate for a reason, Parker” MJ teased.

She kissed him on the cheek and wiped the hot chocolate from the side of his mouth with her thumb.

“I guess the Spidey sense didn’t realize cookies and cocoa could be a threat too, huh?” Peter said, cheeks reddening.

“That’s alright. I’ll protect you from the sinister cookies,” MJ murmured as she put a now-cooled cookie in his mouth and took one for herself.

She was laying in his chest again with one hand on his sleeve. Peter took another bite of cookie. It was warm and sweet. These were the moments he truly lived for—the stolen kisses, the tender touches, and the pure passion he felt when he was with MJ. He snuggled close as they watched a panicked Drew Barrymore run from Ghostface. With every sharp intake of Peter’s breath as Barrymore’s death loomed closer, MJ squeezed his hand. She was his protector too.

Suddenly, MJ’s phone screen lit up. She picked it up to see the news alert.

“Peter, there’s a five-alarm fire in Hell’s Kitchen,” she said with dismay.

Peter webbed his backpack to his hands. He went back to the bathroom to change back into the Spider-Man suit. When he returned, he kept his eyes on the floor. Peter wanted to stay snuggled into the couch, holding MJ tight. MJ crossed the room to him and brushed his cheek.

“It’s ok, Peter. There’s thirty more days of Halloween,” she smiled.

He returned the smile and kissed her once more, beginning yet another premature exit out the apartment window. Peter looked at MJ one more time as he pulled his mask down.

“Go get ‘em, Tiger,” MJ said with a wink.

Peter’s heart skipped a beat and he smiled under his mask as he swung to the out of the window.

It was time to be Spider-Man again.

How I feel about this character

Okay, anyone with eyes knows I fucking adore Tiger Breeze. She is so fun and sexy and perfect and I wish she was real so I could ask her out and marry her. My soft spot for tough girls who refuse to show weakness becomes more and more apparent with each and every passing day. I think she is arguably the most underrated of the tribe leaders- personality-wise at least. We’ve already had the discussion of how she is one of the prettiest cats in Threeclans. Tiger Breeze is so fun and dynamic and I love how the tribe’s customs and lore is used so well in favor of her character. Seeing her during the spring, watching her kick ass and take names? It makes me so happy. She is so powerful and perfect. Anyways.

Tiger Breeze has gone through So Much Fucked Up Shit and taken on so many burdens that nobody else was willing to put the effort in for. She was the only spring cat to step up and take in Hollow when all was lost, when she was being torn apart by her own tribe after losing the home she’d been born and raised in. For moons and moons and moons, she was starving, being berated, blamed, betrayed. And she still held on, still nursing Hollow as they all starved, as the leaders bickered and fought over how to proceed. She lost connection to the ancestors, she lost everything. And still she remained strong.

Two to-bes leave, the biggest “fuck you” any cat could have given their home. And she didn’t forget. And when they returned, well fed, groomed, having found some better place than the tribe, insisting they’re the tribe’s saviors? After watching her tribemates starve, watching them flea-infested, unable to move, get hit by cars and starve to death? After she’s held on so long, stayed strong, continued to fight tooth and nail to keep the cats she’s responsible alive? They’re the heroes? She puts them in their place fast. She rewards Aspen and Spark, examples of what those traitors should have been. That’ll show em.

She leads her tribe after them. They don’t get to run away and feast endlessly, leaping into the arms of these ‘Clan cats.’ No. If they’re going to live life without a care, so is the tribe. She fights, she puts herself at risk, inserting herself amongst the leaders, not asking them, Telling Them that the territory they’ve settled on is theirs now. She claims a new home for her tribe.

So she settles in. She’s done her job. Hollow is grown up, the Tribe has a home now. She’s done her job. She can relax. And then suddenly her nieces are in her lap and they’re her problem now. Great. She’s expected to be the mom of her brother’s dead boyfriend, a role she neither wanted nor asked for. Cool.

I could go on but its 12:30 and I have class tomorrow. My point is? Tiger Breeze’s whole life is practically dedicated to cleaning up the messes of everyone else and she deserves a break.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Tiger/Kink. I really shocked you with this one, huh Maya? Anyways- hear me out. I think there’s so much potential here just because they’re both so similar to one another, and yet their morals are so different. Tiger Breeze, since birth, has been raised to be a good caretaker. She’s had this stereotype to fill with being a passive, docile, loving, empathetic kit lover, never given room to grow outside that. She was raised under the expectation that she’d be cared for, she wouldn’t need to raise a paw to feed herself or protect herself. She found salvation by rebelling and makes a point of showing herself off, reminding others around her that she is not a force to be reckoned with- she’s not a doormat and any cat who thinks otherwise will have hell to pay. However, when it comes to being a spring cat, she feels awkward, out of place, like she’s not where she’s supposed to be. She’s so focused on being tough and strong that she feels out of place in a position so vulnerable as raising children- especially in the cases of Firefly and Butterfly, where the role of “mother” has been so unceremoniously forced upon her, a role she has no desire to claim. Tiger Breeze’s tough demeanor comes from being separated from motherhood. Kinktail? From birth, she’s been raised to be a fierce and loyal warrior. Her mentor was tough and demanding, and Kinktail worked hard to prove herself a loyal FogClan warrior. She had to learn everything, taking on so many different roles as FogClan warriors are expected. Where Tribe cats take on one specific role for the good of the many, FogClan cats take on all roles for the sake of self-preservation. Kinktail has been raised under the expectation she would be facing the world relatively on her own. Kinktail embraced this, loyal FogClan warrior to a T- only raising kits because it was the expectation to give back to her clan and add to its population. But, no father in the picture, the threat of traitors, FogClan changing so drastically through her pregnancy and her time as a nursery queen? Motherhood wasn’t an obligation- it quickly morphed into her identity. Her loyalty only began to shift as something more important entered her life. Kinktail’s tough demeanor was forged from motherhood. Both of them are strong, closed off mollies well regarded for their fierce, tough attitudes, but for entirely different reasons. As a result, I think them merging, Kinktail teaching Tiger Breeze to embrace motherhood without compromising her strength and Tiger Breeze teaching Kinktail to be less unhealthily reliant on motherhood, teaching her to move on from the dark parts of motherhood that haunt Kinktail? I think there’s SO much room for growth and depth there.Tiger/Feather. Okay. If Sketch somehow manages to steal Tiger Breeze from my grubby little fingers, I think there’s potential for a fun opposites-attract type thing with these two. Feather is the embodiment of friendliness and kindness, Tiger Breeze is the embodiment of “lmao why the Fuck are you looking at me” and seeing those two personalities merge together would be hilarious

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Ok these are gonna be shorter bc I’m starting to lose steam here.

Tiger&Butterfly and Tiger&Firefly. Ugh. The complex relationship these three have? SO fun and interesting and cool to watch. I hope that someday, as Firefly and Butterfly get older, sentient enough to realize how fucked up the situation they, Tiger, and Fading all had? They gain a close relationship with her where Tiger has a soft spot for them, protects them and spoils them ever so slightly, and Firefly and Butterfly can count on their aunt Tiger Breeze to be there for advice, to yell at people who fuck with them, so on and so forth. I really wanna see how they turn out once they’re teens/adults, and Tiger gets a little more separation from responsibility over them.

Fading&Tiger. Everyone knows what a soft spot I have for sibling relationships, especially ones as complex as this. I hope that, someday, when Fading gets to overcome the trauma he went through and gets a little more aware of how fucked that situation was/is, they can someday have a heart to heart and find some sort of middle ground/some respect for one another, even if it’s from a distance.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Tiger Breeze isn’t as bad a caretaker as everyone says she is. There, I said it. Is she a perfect caretaker? Would she be on the cover of “World’s Best Moms” magazine? Absolutely not. But I also firmly believe that Tiger Breeze does what she believes is right by those in her care, and even if sometimes her view of what’s right for them is a little bit skewed, I think she does care about those she looks after and does what she thinks they’ll need to grow up strong. She’s just a bit of a believer in tough love.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon.

I wish Tiger Breeze would fall in love. I’ll be the first person to admit a romantic interest a. should not be necessary for a cat’s storyline, b. should not be used as a means of “fixing” or “changing a cat (especially “for the better”) but I think Tiger Breeze, in particular, would be a really fun cat to see slip up with her feelings. So much of Tiger Breeze’s character is formed around the fact that she’s independent, she’s a bad bitch, she always knows what’s best, she’s being held back by the other cats around her, so on and so forth. Constantly, to her, she’s being forced to fall to a lesser standard because other cats won’t stop latching onto her when all she wants is to be alone. And it’s for that reason I’d love to see her finally deal with her, herself, holding her back because she feels herself starting to get attached to another cat. I want to see her lose her train of thought because she saw her crush out of the corner of her eye, I want to see her up giving the gathering announcements and pause just for a split second because she saw the cat’s eyes staring up at her, their attention fully on her. I want to see her lash out and tase this cat as some half-hearted way to distance herself from them- all because she blames them for how her mind has slowly been being taken over by thoughts of them. Maybe I’m just a stupid fucking romantic but there’s nothing that I love more than seeing strong cats fall victim to their own feelings.

Uhhh... I get the feeling I wouldn’t be aware I was on an ACTUAL first date. But if I had to think of one... I guess a Day date? Go out exploring?

Like a trope? Ironically probably the one I’d fall into. Person A likes Person B, but PB is so painfully unaware of PA’s attraction to them despite obvious hints from EVERYONE about it. Is probs in denial/unaware of their own attraction to PA. That is until one day it hits them like a fucking freight train and now PB is dying because of it.

Lol ppl hate my response to this. This gunna be a long answer.

Most likely I wouldn’t. Not cuz I fear rejection, tbh i don’t care if I’m rejected. That’s best case scenario for me. I have two other fears about it. I can’t see myself gaining a crush on someone I barely know. Meaning this person and I would have to be on some level, friends. But I don’t like the thought of romantically liking my friend. Fear 1: if I like and confess then get rejected, I’m scared I’ll make things awkward and ruin the friendship I had with this person. I’d much rather crush and swallow my feelings dry than to potentially ruin a friendship. I know they’ll find someone else to be with, and although it’d be bitter sweet, I’d be happy for them. Fear 2: they reciprocate the feelings. As silly as it is, it does genuinely stress me out to think of someone returning the feelings I would have for them. Like? What? Why? The fuck??? Ok now what? What if we date for a bit and it doesn’t work out? Then we’re no longer friends cuz it’s awkward or whatever. Because of these thoughts I find the concept of actually being in a happy/loving and long lasting relationship so foreign and bizarre. Im not saying that it’d be unattainable for me, difficult yes but not unattainable. It’s just a thought that my mind struggles to grasp.

Jeremy’s biggest flaw as a character was that there wasn’t ever a time I generally sympathized with their emotions, like there were moments I thought “YES! we are going to address the real reason Jeremy wears women’s clothing!” or “Jeremy struggles in school because their mind is cluttered with worry and expectations and the idea of trying to see how they fit in/ finding themselves.” But none of that is ever addressed! We see Jeremy go from wanting to be popular to wanting the pretty girl (mind you just because shes beautiful and unique, never once do we get a “because she is passionate and optimistic and a great person!”) to having a momentary struggle with a squip and finalizing with having said squip control the minds of the students as a hivemind to make them forgive Jeremy for nearly killing them all and suddenly BOOM popular with no payoff. Like we sympathize with Michael more because not only is Michael a sympathetic underdog, he is a GREAT person! Sticking up for your friend when you were ditched? Researching about squips? Making sure your best friend is okay? 11 questions (part 1)

For this round of 11 Questions, I was tagged by @zigbadboy

1. Most hated choices book Home for the Holidays. Nick gets on my GD nerves. I haven't read it in weeks.

2. Favorite smell I really like citrus scents which is weird because if a perfume is citrusy then my body destroys it.

3. A fun fact about you I am really bad at owning technology. It breaks in fantastical ways. All of them are my fault. Like my iPhone before the one I have now literally disintegrated 4 months after dropping it.

4. Fuck/kill/Marry a character. Do I chose 3 characters from Choices and play this out? Not sure.

I guess I would do Kenji/Grayson/Silas. Murdering Silas because he is a villain and wants to gentrify a whole neighbourhood. Fuck that. He can go. Fucking Kenji because look at him and I could only tolerate that level of cockiness for EXACTLY one night. Marrying Grayson because he is fine, seems like he would be very gentle with me when I need it and be rough with me when I need it.

5. Tea or coffee? Neither. I tend to stay away from both, but I do like iced tea.

6. What animal best represents your personality? Well in the Chinese Zodiac I am a tiger, so I guess a tiger. Apparently, I am a fire tiger that is independent with poor self-control. I feel read by that.

9. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Without consequence, Najia Jollof with goat meat. Jollof rice is everything and goat meat is hard to butcher and cook but very tasty and tender when you do.

10. Choices OTP Liam X MC. Zig x MC is a close second.

11. Favorite season Autumn. I get all of the nice things I like about cold weather (cool air, sweaters, hot chocolate) without all of the sucky things that comes with cold weather (colds, wind burn that makes me break out, cuffing season).

tagged by @clotpolesonly to list 10 awesome fics!!! not a ranked all-time-favorites thing, but just fics form any fandom that i love, but um, these will probably be my all-time faves anyway (they’re not ranked though). Most of them aren’t actually from any of my usual fandoms, because sometimes I just like to read mindblowing fic, you know? And most of these mindblowing fics often show up in tiny fandoms with little drama and incredible authors who kinda pop in, drop a fic, and vanish back into their own regular fandoms.

(Limiting the number of Batfam fics on this list was really hard omg I should do a Batfam fic list at some point)

Can the City Forgive I Hear Its Sad Song by @victoriousscarf (Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, DC Comics) --- Hoooooooly shit guys this one’s fucking incredible (I mean this author’s incredible in general but this fic). Even if JayDick is not really your thing, you should absolutely consider giving this a shot. I know this is a JayDick fic and that relationship is great (like holy shit great it’s written really well), but what’s really fucking incredible in this is the Bruce and Dick relationship. The DC fandom, particularly the older DC fandom, used to put out some fucking incredible Bruce/Dick relationships, but this one, I think this is the closest thing to their canon relationship that you can get. Bruce and Dick aren’t even anywhere near each other throughout 98% of this fic but you can sense their relationship overwhelming everything else anyway. They’re not in love, they’re not really family, they’re not really friends, they can do without each other, but they love each other more than they’ll ever love anyone else, they are family, and they are friends, and most of all, they do need each other whether they want to or not. I can write a dissertation of Dick and Bruce’s relationship obviously, but the worldbuilding in this fic is also cray, and the plot, particularly the ending, blew my mind. The main story is COMPLETE, but I’m loving the AU of this AU too, even though it’s a WIP right now. Such an excellent read, I can’t emphasize it enough.

1000 Days by @zarabithia (Dick Grayson/Clark Kent, DC Comics) --- (full series linked in the masterlist) Okay, you know how there’s that one fic that can make you ship something so hard it becomes an OTP? This is that fic. This series is the definition of “writing makes the ship”. Before this I never even considered Dick/Clark and now it’s a DC OTP like what? How did that even happen? Except it is that good. And the crazy thing is that it works, with a canon premise. It’s not even an AU! Dick meets Clark when he’s just a baby Robin, and the series works through the entire timeline as Dick grows up and makes friends and faces life issues and becomes independent of Bruce, and the slow, realistic development of his relationship with Clark as he grows from the little boy who was starstruck by Superman, into his own, adult person. (Also the Roy/Dick friendship in this is bomb.)

Roadtrip Vigilantes by Beabae (beabaseball) (Dick Grayson & Bruce Wayne, DC Comics) --- I. I can’t. This one just. I love it so much Bruce and little Dick and running away from the League so they can stay together -lays down on the ground and cries-

Republic of Heaven Community Radio by @bicatperson (Carlos/Cecil, Welcome to Night Vale, His Dark Materials, Fusion) --- If you’re into Welcome to Night Vale and are familiar with His Dark Materials please do yourself a favor and read it. Incredible storytelling, incredible writing, incredible plot, incredible representation. There are like, two white characters in this, and the culture is marked out very clearly as Not White. Loved everything about it. Loved every character (but loved Cecil the most).

Sass-Badger Verses Son-of-No-One by @bewareofchris (Malik Al-Sayf/Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, Assassin’s Creed, Modern AU) --- I know nothing about Assassin’s Creed other than that they jump really high and wear cool outfits, but you don’t need to know anything about it either; this fic stands on its own two feet. This fic made me care about whatever plot point or character or relationship it was focusing on at the given time instead of only on the overarching plot or the romance or one or two characters. The storytelling is, frankly, the best I’ve read in a very, very, very long time.

A Deeper Season by lightgetsin, sahiya (Miles Vorkosigan/Gregor Vorbarra, Vorkosigan Saga) --- Fanfic series for the Vorkosigan Saga, which is a series of novels? Don’t know anything about them at all, never read ‘em and, after this fic, can never read them, because the original novels can’t possibly live up to this? This is my canon now. Amazing, amazing story. Amazing, amazing characters. Very unique take on a royal romance.

A Tithe to Hell by Aja (L/Light, Death Note) --- Okay, you do need to know the canon for this one. Basically, what if L was even more paranoid than he actually was, and L and Light’s, er, relationship, continued past episode 26. In case you haven’t guessed, this is my new canon for Death Note. I can never go back. Best characterization, amazing storytelling, incredible dialogue, and did I mention the characterization???

Single Use Weapon by @fahye (Jack Benjamin/David Shepherd, Kings) --- Fahye is one of my favorite authors of all time and this is, hands down, my favorite thing they’ve ever written, which is crazy, picking a favorite was really hard all their stuff is so good, but this is the one that’s going to stick with me for a long time I think. I love a good spy/double agent story, and this fic has the best plot and characterization of any spy(ish) fic I’ve ever read. It’s so good, guys, The way Jack is written, it’s droolworthy for so many reasons.

Whispers from the Rye by @@somniumquiesco (Wolfram von Bielefeld/Yuuri Shibuya, Kyou Kara Maou) --- ajshdkjafldksalkdsjl I don’t even know what to say I started reading this when I was a teenager and nearly ten years later I still read it over and over again. I’ve changed, my tastes have changed, but my love for this story has not changed one bit.

Shadowlord and Pirate King by Footloose (Merlin/Arthur Pendragon, BBC Merlin) --- Epic space adventure AU the worldbuilding in this is so fantastic it’s got magic, space pirates, assassins, intergalactic war, political intrigue, pirate politics, a prophecy, and a thousand other really fucking great things. The Merlin fandom and Footloose in particular regularly put out insanely amazing stuff, but this is the peak. I would pay actual money for this fic, which is more like a novel really. (Also @mushroomtale‘s art is A++++++ gorgeous as usual but extra gorgeous because I love this fic the most? Also the art goes so well with the fic in terms of style and tone too???)

One day I will probably be able to write an actual PhD dissertation on Bruce and Dick’s preboot relationship but today is not that day, so I’m going to sadly turn this over to @storiesintheashes, @ice-tiger-kitten, @procellariidae, @naiadique, @girlwithribbon, @merkitty, @imonajourney, @mtblackbearfic
