Do you like triumph of evil in your kdramas? A small rec list for the pessimist in you

If, like me, you got into kdramas way back when or like older kdramas, tragic endings are not a particular surprise - endings where one or both members of the OTP die were pretty common and even unsettling endings that remind you of the world being rather unjust (Bad Guys) also happen.

But I am talking about something more than that - an ending that really socks it to you, by making you feel the villains won, it was all in vain. I confess when well-done, I love the bleakness of that type of ending. So here are my five favorites for this sort of thing:

Hong Gil Dong (2008)

This story of a rebel fighting to overthrow the mad tyrant and bring justice to the people has the most thoroughly bad ending on the list. Who dies? EVERYONE EXCEPT THE BAD GUYS! I don't mean the OTP, I don't mean your fave secondaries, I mean everyone. The sheer realistic bleakness of the ending is breath-taking. Gil Dong, his OTP Yi Nok and the rest of the rebels are murdered by the forces of the king they put on the throne. The last shot of the story proper is them standing watching a shower of arrows coming towards them, staring at their death. The only survivors are the King and the secondary girl and both are monsters. The king is the man they put on the throne with so much effort but who cannot allow them to live because what they want is not to replace a bad absolute ruler with a different one (that he may have coped with) but to replace the system itself - to hold the king accountable, and he cannot have that. In the end, a mad tyrant has been replaced with a sane tyrant and the class system and the injustices of that society that wrecked Hil Dong, Yi Nok and the rest continue unabated. And secondary girl betrays Gil Dong because - for all her sort of crush - she never truly saw him as human, just a fancy peasant toy that should be thrown away and punished for not behaving as he ought. In the end, the good guys, the heroes, who fought so hard are killed and it's not easy acceptance for them either (there is a scene where Gil Dong, knowing they are all dead once spring comes, admits to Yi Nok how terrified of death he is that has haunted me for a decade plus) and the monsters continue on happily. Sure, the people recite stories and new fighters will rise in their place but it's very much of a "no happy ending in our lifetime" message.

At the time this drama came out, the Hong Sisters were known for their romcoms and this started out pretty goofy - watching it live as it got darker and darker was a hell of a trip and the ending made the fandom insane. But the more I thought about it, the more I loved it, the more fitting it seemed. I love all the other takes on rebels against the crown a la various other HGD and Iljimae adaptations but this one has, to me, by far the most fitting ending.

IRIS (2009)

Talk about bleak. This drama starts as your standard if high quality actioner about competent glam agents of a secret CIA type agency. And then it all goes to hell in a handbasket for our mains as it turns out a secret evil organization is the one that's pulling the strings, and our protagonist Kim Hyun Jun (played by Lee Byung Hun in my favorite of all of his performances) is sacrificed for complicated reasons that are only gradually revealed and begins his descent into hell. He starts the story as a competent, cocky sweetheart and transforms into a PTSDing shaking hands wreck. And you watch him fight so hard - fight through all the torments inflicted, fight to protect his loved ones and to keep his sanity, and fight to take the evil org down. You watch him slowly rebuild himself, and to slowly find happiness again with the woman he's loved all this time, Choi Seung Hee (played by Kim Tae Hee in my fave of her performances, who has unknowing ties to the org) and to fight over the org and inflict damage on it.

And then we get that ending, as he's finally found some peace and safety, and he's driving to propose to Seung Hee and as he sees her, he's shot in the head, point blank and he lies there, dying, seeing her but not able to reach her, tears falling out of his eyes as she waits oblivious for a man who will never come and it's made so clear that the org goes on, that nothing has been defeated and that it has all been for nothing - he's been killed as a punishment to him but also as a message to Seung Hee that nobody ever escapes - for her to find his body and realize it was all for naught. And it is also made clear that there was NOTHING he could have ever done to avoid this fate except if his parents made different choices before he was born (!!!) Talk about bleak. I sobbed for hours.

Ja Myung Go (2009)

I've just posted about this one so I am not gonna re-do the comments but yeah, it ends with the OTP death, the kingdom destroyed and the one winner is King Daemushin, the bad guy. The God of Battles wins again. Sure he lost a son but he's got other sons. Worth it, would think the old monster.

My Country: the New Age (2019)

The rest of the dramas on this list are older. This one is not. Our two main protagonists die in the end but that is not what makes it so bleak - what makes it so bleak is that nothing of what they wanted came to pass. In a way, it's a bit of a Hong Gil Dong redux situation - there is a new ruler on the throne but he's not any better than the old ones and he's cleaning up the people who put him on the throne. Hwi especially fought so hard for a place and then just to have some peace and he gets neither, the man he fought so hard to put on the throne being his murderer.

What Happened in Bali (2004)

Ooof, this drama! We have four main characters and at the end, two of them are dead, shot by the third one who turns the gun on himself. The only survivor is the ice cold secondary girl who would probably not pause sipping her morning coffee when hearing the news.

This is a story of people damaged and ruined by a bunch of monsters who suppress any hope and anything good and cause more and more damage - we watch the three mains claw at others and at themselves hoping for happiness and connection and love and it all gets dismantled and set on fire repeatedly and in the worst way. It's perhaps the starkest with Jo In Sung's Jung Jae Min - who you watch taken apart and driven to extremity slowly and gradually over the course of the drama. And his monstrous family ends up triumphant at the end - even in death and murder he was not monstrous enough for them to fit in - and now they will continue their lives.

PS The scene where he shoots Ha Ji Won's character right as she's just finishes telling So Ji Sub she loves JIS and wants to go back to him and she tells him "I love you" for the first time ever as she lies dying - that lives in my head rent free forever.

Fanfic Author 20 Questions

Thanks to @erisluna35 for sending this along! 1. How many works do you have on AO3?

On AO3? Right now 63, soon to be 64(tomorrow probably) and a couple on FF.net

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

1,020,860 on AO3 plus another ~86K fic I never ported over to AO3, as my 'recent' stuff, starting back in 2021

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Mostly Miraculous Ladybug, I did others a long time ago before joining AO3, but that was a long time ago. I've considered a couple others recently too, but nothing yet.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

At The Gala- A Chlonette fic inspired by fanart, and actually the sequel to my #2 by Kudos. This is just a cute series of strange interactions with Chloe from Marinette's PoV, culminating in understanding and discovery on a fated evening.

Slippery slope- Little Chlonette ficlet inspired by a fanart. Very short, it's about how a single unexpected moment can change someone's entire world.

Ever After- A long chapter fic set more than a decade post-canon that looks into the idea that 'Ever After' can be a long time, and that expecting life to be solved at 14 is a recipe for eventual disaster. Yet at the same time life continues to offer new experiences, new possibilities, and new ways to grow. Ships include Adrienette, Chloadrien, and Felinette.

Showing Love- An alternate ending to Queen Wasp, where instead of reuniting Chloé with her horrible mother by highlighting everything horrible about her (seriously, what?) Marinette comes face to face with the reality that a mother really *can* not love a child. Being Marinette she can't let such a thing stand, even if it is Chloé. Marinette&Dupain-Cheng family goodness.

What Do you See?- Adrigami fic that kicks off right in the middle of Kuro Neko. While Adrien is struggling with the pain of giving up Cat Noir, one thing crosses his mind. He can finally give one important person the truth she deserves. After all, he *Was* Cat Noir, not *is*. The two both struggle to navigate the ramifications of this revelation, especially when Plagg shows up once more with the ring. (there's a little bit of eventual Lukanette)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to respond to most, especially any questions or curiosities. I love engagement.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Oh heck this is so not fair. I am in love with bittersweet ending, and have a couple of doozies.

I can't decide between three.

What Happened- The 'real reason' Chloé Bourgeois's redemption arc failed. What do you di when you do everything right, only to find out your happiness causes the end of the world, in every timeline?

A Modest Proposal- Marinette is happily impatient for Adrien to finally propose to her. Little does she know, a secret long kept is going to come back to haunt her. It's worse than you think.

The Risk Outweighs- A look into someone else's life during the episode 'Risk'. The courage to do anything finally gives Chloé the strength to break from the cycle. But the Ladybugs must set things right, and a few moments of clarity weigh nothing against a lifetime.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Again, lots with happy endings, though I prefer 'open' endings, so...hmmm

Cafe Noir- has an unambiguously happy ending, but I specifically set out to write a romcom so that feels like cheating.

Dog Daze- probably has the most comprehensively happy ending, Adrien's dad even managed to try to parent. They do go through a lot on the way to the happy ending though.

In Direct Opposition- My latest work, seems to end on a solidly happy note for all involved.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Ever After drew some upset people that expected their OTP to be the main ship. I never tried to deceive anyone, but a few people were just really upset.

I also had this weird thing where someone thought I was someone else, and stalked my comments for a while. That's why I use moderation now.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I've done M rated fics. I'm not sure 'smut' works for them, even if there's lots of sex narratively, it's usually mentioned rather than being detailed. I did one single 'this will be a smut fic' fic. And even that ended up with like, 5K words mostly plot, and about 2 paragraphs of (I think emotional and important) sex.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Nah, I've never had the crossover itch. I generally find each world intriguing enough on their own.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of...

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yep! I had someone ask if they could translate one of my fics to Russian.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope. Talked about it before, but never went through with it. Not against the idea. I do a lot of rubber ducking for my friends though, so some of my ideas can end up in their finished fics.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

I'm going ot have to go with adribrina, my goobers. I like exploring all kinds of ships, and these two I threw together on a whim but Oh, they're so comfy! I wrote Puppy Love to see how they would work, and then that evolved into Dog Daze, my Largest work to date. I had *intended* for them to amicably break up and Sabrina to be a wing-woman to Adrien in the canon ship of Adrienette.... but they just did not want to break up. Even if they wouldn't admit they were dating, they were just too *comfy* together. These two make me happy. (Marinette ended up okay though, she's happy!)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

A third fic in my Senti-Sentai AU. 'Worlds Collide'. It was set in 'vague eastern Europe country in the middle of violent conflict' and then that suddenly got too real, too quickly.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Character voice. I write third person limited, and I've been told many times that I do a very good job of writing characters as their canonical selves, just in different situations that bring about different outcomes or changes in them. I consider that a high compliment, because the characters are what I am here for.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Brevity. Even simplistic plots 'enemies to friends road trip' become detailed 'Marinette manipulates Chloé into chasing Adien and Lila across the globe to prevent Lila from wheedling an arranged Marriage out of Gabriel' and then that blossoms into a 98K fic.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I feel like my last of understanding grammar and colloquialisms for another language would have me sounding like bad google translate. Singular words used? Viable.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

SWATKats. My first ever fanfic was a 30K fic about that show.

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

They are all my babies! This is so not fair. I've spoken about some of my favorites earlier though, so I'll use this spot to mention some other ones :)

He's Perfect- Gothic Horror Adrienette! It even has a sequel and an entire AU in my head if I can circle back.

The Orphan and the Marionette- Written to feel like one of Grimm's fairy tales. Chlonette(kind of) with a heavy dose of magic and a surprise appearance from Marianne.

There are so many more but I'll plug Dog Daze again, because I to like how it flows and the alternate S5 we get from it. It also inspired a raft of 'post story' one shots, and I have another chapter fic waiting in the wings to continue the AU. There's plenty of stories to tell here.

I understand that you appreciated enough things about Love & Thunder (as in Jane's scenes, Thorjane, etc) to consider it canon, but what are your thoughts on the Thor2 deleted break up? I can't help but prefer them breaking up because of the long distance, or Jane being so overwhelmed that she "couldn't imagine a life with him" after everything, than what we got in canon. Maybe my opinion would change if I watched the movie, not sure, but I'm interested in your take on it.

*takes a deep breath* Buckle up.

1. I appreciate you saying whether I'd consider anything canon or not. Buddy, my acceptance is irrelevant. Anything Marvel puts out IS canon, regardless of how we feel about it. That's the whole entire reason I can't let this shit go. Because he's CANONICALLY drilled into the ground by Marvel with nowhere to go. And it depresses me.

2. I hate both break-up scenes because I simply don't want my OTP separated. Period. But if I have to validate any one, I'd go with Thor4 because at least its idea was understandable, the issue was its failed execution. The Thor2 breakup makes no sense and regresses their characters. The two reasons you present that the movie presents:

a) Breaking up because of long distance is such a bastardization of their magical relationship that transcends realms that I just cannot. He's not a coworker or a one-night stand she tried to have a relationship with and decided it wasn't working out. He's the Prince of the paradise in the clouds that's advanced to her realm by a millennium. He's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as far as boyfriends go lol. And his mother died to protect her. Why? Because she had all but accepted her as her daughter-in-law.

You don't just break up with THAT because of long distance, that's unbelievably simplistic.

b) Jane being overwhelmed that she "couldn't imagine a life with him" is also against her character because she is such a zero self-preservation inquisitive soul that was so fascinated by Asgard's advanced technology, she would be at home on Asgard. She would want to be with him and explore his magical world she's studied about her whole life.

And ok, she was so overwhelmed that she would dump him. For what? To return to her boring 9 to 5 life and do theories of the phenomenons she could do practicals of on Asgard. That makes no sense with Jane's character.

Or she was so scared by the challenges of a life with him (even tho she was ready to die saving him a scene ago) that she just quit? That's not the Jane I know either. She takes challenges head-on and is not a quitter.

The ONLY reason she would break up with him is for him - like I said in my theory that Odin made her do it.

3. Even from a story-telling perspective, it was a terrible choice because it resets every character to their factory settings, rendering the development of Thor1 and 2 completely pointless. Jane becomes a meaningless person forgotten going forward. Thor and Odin are chilling in Asgard with nothing to do and Loki and Frigga are dead with their sacrifices for Thor and Jane amounting to a big fat 0. Why dedicate two whole movies to their romance only to break up because of freakin long distance?

You can't have the event of Ragnarok with Thor in Asgard. You can't have him on Midgard for Avengers movies. What is the point of this then?

Not to elongate an already long answer, but I always thought the plan was to make her the Queen of Asgard, the perfect foil for King Thor. Her love and quest for knowledge + kindness to help shirtless strangers combined with Thor's sense of justice and protection of his people would make them the PERFECT rulers. Do you know what I'd give for this to be Thor's final ending in the MCU?

Like, I thought she was written to be so fascinated with the stars beyond because that where she belongs. That's where she'll rule. That if anyone from Midgard in the MCU was meant to leave it and stay on Asgard their whole life, it's Jane because she's so far ahead of her time.

But I was Boo Boo the Fool. Her entire purpose in life was to die for him. Because Marvel's all about feminism.

Character ask: Charles Bingley (Pride and Prejudice)

Favorite thing about them: His warmth, kindness, and friendliness.

Least favorite thing about them: How easily swayed he is by other people instead of trusting his own instincts.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I try to be kind and friendly to everyone I meet.

*I too easily believe what other people tell me.

*I'm often drawn to people who are very different from me (like Darcy is from Bingley), but I'd prefer a romantic partner with a temperament more like mine.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I don't have any sisters.

*I'm not considered especially desirable for marriage by my neighbors (thank goodness!).

*I'm female.

Favorite line:

About letter-writing:

“My ideas flow so rapidly that I have not time to express them; by which means my letters sometimes convey no ideas at all to my correspondents.”

And from the same conversation ("awful" in this context means "awe-inspiring," not "bad"):

nOTP: Either of his sisters.

Random headcanon: If he had never reunited with Jane, I don't think he would have spent the rest of his life pining for her; neither would Jane for him, even though Elizabeth fears otherwise. They would both have eventually moved on and found others. But this doesn't make their love for each other any less deep or less true. Nor – despite what some fans speculate – does the fact that he had other infatuations before Jane imply that his love for her won't last. Theirs is a good, tender, ordinary love that will lead to a happy marriage, and the fact that it isn't some larger-than-life, once-in-a-lifetime passion doesn't diminish it in the least.

Unpopular opinion: He's not an idiot. Even though his intellect doesn't match Darcy's and he relies too much on other people's judgments, that doesn't make him a himbo. He's a person of perfectly average intelligence. He's not inherently boring either. I'd like to see a retelling of the story written from his point of view for a change, or at least from Jane's point of view that puts their romance front and center, because I think they both have potential depth to explore.

A Puppy for Christmas

Arthur Kirkland--or more widely known by his pen name A.K. Walker--had made a plan: Spend Christmas with his eldest brother Dylan in their hometown in the heart of the English countryside and perhaps stir up some new ideas for his next novel. But life had always had that psychotic way of toying with you, and Arthur had been faced with one of those moments.

Instead of his cozy childhood home in the middle of nowhere, he was stuck in a small, but bustling tourist town in Michigan after an emergency landing. Though he’d love to do nothing more than scream, he wasn’t a child, and that wasn’t going to help him. Collecting his suitcase, and tightening his coat around him, he set off into the freezing vortex.

Though the rest of the town lay dark save for the Christmas lights lining the street, one building stayed lit. It was a grand home made of weathered brick, mossy trimming, and a homey wrap-around porch. Vintage, just how Arthur liked his buildings.

Garland strung with golden lights swayed in the wind as Arthur approached. It looked like something out of a Christmas card. Safely under the roof of the wrap-around porch, Arthur could finally read the sign: Beilschmidt-Übernachtung mit Frühstück and in smaller print: Beilschmidt- Bed and Breakfast. Thank God.

Arthur shuffled in, not realizing how cold he was until the warm air of the in brushed against his chilled body. He brushed off the snow from his coat and stomped his boots on the carpet.

“Good evening,” an accented voice called.

Behind the reception desk stood a tall, broad-shouldered man, with light blond hair kept neatly back by gel. His blue eyes pierced into Arthur, far colder than the snowy world he just escaped.

“H-Hello…” Arthur stammered. He felt something wet against his hand, and he immediately pulled it away. Looking down, he found two adoring brown eyes looking up at him.

“Berlitz, don’t scare the guest,” barked the receptionist, “Heel.” The dog obediently trotted behind the desk and promptly laid down. A blink and you’d miss it smile spread across the receptionist's face as he praised his dog. But his sharp eyes and frown quickly returned when he turned back to Arthur. “How may I help you?”

“Uh…I was hoping to get a room. I’m a little stranded at the moment."

“You’re lucky, I have one room left. I hope you don’t mind two double beds.”

The receptionist sounded pissed or at the very least annoyed. Arthur bristled but tried to remain polite “I’ll take whatever you have,” he replied tightly.

“Here you go, room 202, just up the stairs. Breakfast is from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.”

No ‘enjoy your stay’ or ‘have a nice night.’ Of course, a handsome, tall, blond receptionist with a body carved by God Himself had to have something wrong with him. Before he blew up over something so small, Arthur made his way to his room for the night.

As soon as Arthur awoke the next morning, he immediately booted up his laptop only to discover that his flight was still grounded. With a groan, he rose to his feet despite the cloud of jet lag that hung in his brain. He looked over at the clock. Shit 10:30. He quickly threw on some clothes, brushed his teeth, and rushed downstairs, not even bothering to try and tame his bedhead (he always looked like he had bedhead anyways).

He was in such a rush that Arthur didn’t notice the large German Shepherd napping in the sun and the center of the bottom of the stairs. He didn’t notice until he was falling face-first into the pine floor.

But the impact never came. No hard cold floor, no throbbing face, he almost felt like he was floating. Opening his eyes, he found himself suspended mid-fall. Arthur looked back and meant those cool eyes from the night before.

Arthur felt as though he was being strangled under the intense gaze. The receptionist pulled him back up, causing Arthur to collide with his sturdy chest. His face burned.

“Uh…A-Are you alright?” The blond man asked, sounding much more unsure than he had the night before.

“I-I’m fine,” Arthur stuttered out, “I overslept a bit. Jetlag and all that.”

“Understandable, but there is no need to run.”

Feeling like a child who was being scolded, Arthur looked away. “S-Sorry…”

“It’s okay. Now go take a seat, I’ll make you something.” But the receptionist's hold lingered a few minutes too many before he seemed to shake himself out of whatever state he was in, going back to that cool, calculated man from before.

The dining room, just like the rest of the inn, was as if it was trapped in time. Dark wooden floors, cream-coloured walls, tables, and chairs right out of the Victorian-era novels that Arthur had loved as a preteen and well into his adult years filled the room. He took his seat.

“Hello there,” a gravelly voice called from behind, “I sure hope my brother hasn’t scared ya.”

Arthur turned to see a man with eyes as sharp as the receptionist's, but much more fire behind them. “Not at all.”

The man grinned. “Good... I just want to make sure no one feels uncomfortable. Both him and all you guests. Anyway! Can I get you some juice?”

This guy must have been the owner. “Orange is just fine.”

“Coming right up. Now, if you need anything during your stay, just call Gilbert or Ludwig, and we’ll help you out.”

Arthur nodded.

Breakfast came out minutes after Arthur had gotten his juice. Pancakes, covered with apples, cinnamon, and sugar with syrup and bacon on the side. Dipping his finger the syrup and giving it a tentative lick, Arthur concurred it was real maple syrup and not the ‘sugary fake shit’ as his cousin Matthew would say.

He poured a generous amount over his pancakes before digging in. Of course, nothing would beat Matthew’s pancakes, but these were a very close second.

Well-fed, Arthur decided to see what this little town had to offer while he waited for any news that he would make it home for Christmas.

The streets were bustling as residents and tourists alike browsed the colourful storefronts. So many shops full of little knick-knacks, artisan goods, and Christmas decorations you couldn’t find anywhere else. An old-fashioned bookstore that reminded Arthur of the one his late mother once owned particularly caught his eye. He made a mental note to ensure he stopped there on his way back to the B&B.

But what had truly taken Arthur’s interest was when he spotted the receptionist–Ludwig–struggling with a few gift baskets. Without thinking, Arthur rushed over, taking one of the baskets before it fell.

“Danke,” Ludwig said breathlessly.

“You’re quite welcome.”

Ludwig straightened himself out, cheeks flushing slightly. “Um…would it be too much trouble to ask you to help me bring these in?” He nodded towards a small brick house. Or at least it looked like a house, but the outside pens and the sign deemed it an animal shelter.

“None at all.”

A cheery auburn-haired man with a strange curl greeted them. “Ah, Luddie! You brought them.”

“Yep, this is the last of them.”

“Perfecto! Can I get you and your helper to take these to the back?”

Ludwig looked over at Arthur hesitantly.

Arthur nodded and followed the auburn-haired man to the back, Ludwig following close behind.

A cat spotted with patches of orange, brown, black, and white lay on the office chair. It stretched as they entered and blinked at them slowly.

"Hello Pookie," the auburn-haired man cooed, scratching the kitty behind the ears. "Just place them on the table with the rest of them.”

Arthur and Ludwig unloaded the baskets amongst the others. Arthur took a moment to look over them all. One full of toys and games, another full of craft supplies, one for a movie night, soaps and creams, chocolate and sweets, and so on.

“Great! Other than decorating the rec center, we’re all set. Thanks again for everything Luddie.”

“Good to hear. Just let me know if there is anything else you need me to do.”

“You’ve already done so much. And with that storm, I’m sure you’re busy at the inn.” For the first time since they got there, the auburn-haired man’s eyes fell on Arthur. “Oh! You didn’t introduce me to your friend. I’m Feliciano.” He extended his hand to Arthur.

“Arthur,” Arthur replied, shaking Feliciano’s hand.

“I sure hope you’ll be coming to the fundraiser next weekend. We could use all the guests we can get.”

“Fundraiser?”

Feliciano nodded so quickly that it looked like his head would snap off. “Yes! For the animal shelter. We’ve…um…we’ve been struggling a bit. Too many animals, not enough homes.”

“Ah. I-I’ll see. I’m not from around here.”

Feliciano’s face fell slightly. “Oh. Heh, sorry.” He shook his head, and his smile returned at full force. “Don’t let me keep you!”

Ludwig and Feliciano exchanged a few more words before Arthur and Ludwig took off.

“You didn’t have to wait for me,” Ludwig said as they exited the shelter.

“Oh uh…” Arthur wasn’t even sure why he had waited. “I-I uh…I don’t want to get lost on my way back.”

Ludwig tilted his head slightly. Arthur couldn’t blame him, after all, it was just down the street. But thankfully Ludwig didn’t say anything and just started walking.

Arthur stumbled behind, mentally slapping himself for such a lame excuse.

hitsukarin as my favourite xianxia otps for this upcoming halloween! xianxias are usually chinese dramas, about cultivation, immortals (demons and/or heavenly beings) and mortals, and three loves three lifetimes. they also tend to be long.

eternal love of dream. karin is the sole red nine-tailed fox is in the world. one day, karin is attacked by a savage beast, and ends up getting saved by the first emperor of heaven, hitsugaya toushirou. grateful, and feeling indebted, karin accompanies toushirou to vanquish the demon lord. as the two spend time together, karin realizes her gratitude towards toushirou has slowly evolved into love. unfortunately, toushirou has long forgotten what love is. although the coldest hearts can melt with time, will countless lifeimes be sufficient to bring these two hearts together?

love between fairy and demon. in order to obtain terrible power, hitsugaya toushirou became an emotionless monster. luckily, the god of war managed to seal him away before he could destroy the world. legend has it that if hitsuagaya toushirou were to escape, the world would be in danger once more, and only the goddess of xishan can prevent this catastrophe, but unfortunately, she's vanished without a trace. 30,000 years later, karin, a weak and low-ranking flower fairy, accidentally stumbles into the dimension where hitsugaya toushirou is trapped, and their encounter sets off a chain of events that threaten to change the fate of the world once again.

till the end of the moon. hitsugaya toushirou is the harbinger of doom and set on bringing the apocalypse. in order to prevent this, karin volunteers to travel back in time prevent toushirou from becoming the fearsome devil lord, back when he was just a mortal man. in the past, karin assumes a new identity, unbeknownst to her, the wife of hitsugaya toushirou, who is a captive and powerless prince of the country they're now in. determined to destroy him, all too aware that he will massacre many, karin tries to understand how he became the figure that she hates. but as she witnesses hitsugaya toushirou's past life and rise to power, another emotion within her begins to complicate her mission.

things of note/brief primer, ig:

3 loves 3 lifetimes explanation. Immortal beings tend to go through trials -- becoming reincarnated as a mortal, live, love, die and become more powerful when they reawaken as an immortal. So life 1 and 3, they tend to be the same person, but some xianxias play around with who is going through the trial in the mortal realm, it doesn't always have to be the mains! Dreams arcs can count as this, TBH. Sometimes more than one trial is necessary, tho.

characters tend to be be dubbed. ML of LBFAD is def. dubbed, FL dubs her own voice. I'm fairly certain ELOD and LAR leads are dubbed, but I haven't confirmed it. TTEOTM, FL and ML are using their own voices. I'd say give the shows you're interested in a couple of eps before you decide continuing/dropping it, FL voices of LBFAD and LAR and ELOD are pretty high pitched, so they might need some time to get used to. Modern day cdramas don't tend to be dubbed, but might if the actor's natural accent is too strong? Whereas as xianxias get dubbed to suit the character more.

I guess these are variations on a theme. There's certain recurring tropes, and not all xianxias focus on lacking senses, but unfortunately, my faves do. They're handled extremely different though!

ELOD works as a standalone, but it does include some references to it's parent story Eternal Love/Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. Here's the thing, the main couple of ELOD are the b-couple of TMOPB, but everything that happens to them in TMOPB doesn't impact ELOD in the slightest, it was just made up content because the the producers didn't have the rights to the book. I don't really like TMOPB's main couple, but I was charmed by the b-couple, even if they get a bittersweet ending in TMOPB. They're characterized slightly differently in ELOD. Same actors tho! Which is nice!

(LBFAD, LAR and TTEOTM are standalone tho.)

They're all based on books! I'm sure you can look them up online, if you want to check them out, though I haven't read them myself. I've heard they do change a lot, though. LBFAD does have a cartoon -- though chinese animation is called donghua -- which apparently is closer to the book. It's still v. cute.

TTEOTM leads have worked previously in a modern day romcom called Love Is Sweet, and they're super cute in it.

TTEOTM is unfortunately truncated. It was supposed to be 60ish episodes, but got cut down to 40 instead. It still works and is cohesive enough, but man, I am sad that there's cut content because I love them most.

LAR relies a lot on misunderstandings, but the charm of the lead couple, who are very soft for each other, will hopefully carry you through it. The worst one is the misunderstood love triangle, IMO? But it's dealt with pretty quickly, considering that this show is pretty long! (Might be a matter of perspective, tho, bc at the time it's a bit of a drag, but I think it's 3-4 episodes long, and it happens early on.) But I was okay with the rest of the misunderstandings, they don't feel as painful? I mean, it's fine, and it suits the characters, but, a little irritating. Angst and the ML suffering to an art form is pretty strong in this one.

LBFAD uses a bit of cgi accessories? IMO they look awful, but they don't get used that much. Nevertheless, whenever SML and the villain wore them, they looked terrible.

Bad wigs are a given. Just a head's up.

There's a lot of bloody mouths/spitting blood in all of them? I think LAR and TTEOTM are the ones where it happens the most, but it is just a recurring trope in xianxias.

I think all can be found on YT, and I wouldn't advise watching them on Netflix/Prime just becomes they don't give out occasional contextual notes. Personal choice, tho, you can look them up on MyDramaList on where else to watch them.

I am a huge romantic. Romance, to some capacity, is required in almost every story I read or watch. As a result, I have a lot of couples I like. But shipping is another level of interest. So I decided to go with these three because I spent the most money on them lol. I've bought comics, audio dramas, books, and boxsets. And for those wondering why I didn't put Klaus/Caroline from TVD...they broke my heart that's why. :(

Ariadne: The Novel. Literally just finished this morning, so my frustration is still fresh. I absolutely adore the story of Ariadne and Bacchus. I almost wrote a novel based on them when I was 19 but I decided not to continue. But because I am so familiar and fascinated by them, I should not have bought this book. The book itself is fine. It was just a mismatch of expectations.

Yes, in the Greco-Roman myths, there is a running theme that some individuals are heroes to men but dogs to women. And there are few variations to Ariadne's story, so one never knows which direction the author will go. But there is more to Ariadne than being a perpetual victim to all the men in her life. At least, to me, there is. This is why, if I have doubts, I usually check the middle of a book before I buy it. I checked this time too, and I thought I was safe, but it was actually the last pages that ruined it for me.

I wanted to read the liberation and empowerment of Ariadne, her conversion from the naive, discarded princess to the triumphant Libera, the ascendant goddess whose name literally means free; the woman who latched hold of a once in a lifetime opportunity and carved a place for herself in the halls of Olympia after her lover, Theseus, abandoned her to starve to death on the shores of Naxos; the Libera who watched, enthroned, as her would-be killer suffered a series of mishaps and fell from grace in the eyes of gods and man.

And were all those mishaps accidents? Or curses? And if so, by whom? Her? Bacchus? Another deity? Is Ariadne foolish or cunning, haughty or generous, vengeful or forgiving? There are so many routes her story can go. However, this book does not take the route of the empowered Libera. It has a negative character arc, which - again - is fine, just not for me. Unless it's about the protagonist turning into the villain in which case it's 100% for me.

Other books I'm currently reading because I do not read one book at a time: Francine Rivers's The Lady's Mine; Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None; Tom Baker's Scratchman; James Patterson and Emily Raymond's The Girl in the Castle; and Jacqueline Rayner's Legends of Camelot.

And don't get me started on the endless list of ongoing manga/manhua I read monthly.

currently watching: Nothing really. I've been meaning to watch the latest season of You. And I've rewatched a couple Doctor Who eps for research (fanfic) purposes. But I don't really watch tv anymore, at least I don't regularly follow any tv shows like I used to.

currently craving: Food. I'm hungry but I don't want to cook. But guess who promised to cook today? Me.

22. what reminds each of their partner?

what reminds s of r: books & especially old books, petrichor i.e. the smell of earth after a hard rain, patched corduroy, muggle boys on bicycles, welsh accents (obvs!), worn out-of-tune pianos, chocolate & bergamot, the glint of secret mischief he sometimes spots in other people's eyes (especially, i think, lily's), david bowie, and always, inevitably, at any phase, the moon

what reminds r of s: soft leather (obvs!) & especially those fancy leather dog collars, cigarette smoke, motorbikes & the smell of petrol, poorly knotted ties, very old silver, michelangelo's david, sudden harsh/barking laughter, lightning & thunderstorms, the stooges, and always, again, inevitably, the stars

30. your otp gets to pick out each other’s outfits; what is each wearing?

ajlkadf omg i am living for this question all right here we go!!

sirius picking remus's outfit: ok s obviously never gets the chance to select clothes for the ornery ornery moony so he is thrilled for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he is going ALL OUT. r is wearing thick dark eyeliner, golden shimmer glitter on his cheeks and eyelids, probs a black or metallic golden lip as well. and the clothes!! practically drag, actually, you know what, not even practically, just straight-up drag. fishnets, leather skirt, some sort of weird barely existent black mesh top, punk-looking jewelry (spiked collar or some shit etc), aaaaand ... sirius's docs bc he outright refused the stilettos! (bad knees yknow.) r is DEEPLY deeply deeply uncomfortable, crossing his arms over his chest and glaring etc, but too bad this is s's one big chance to realize the DREAM and he’s going for it hard.

remus picking sirius's outfit: all right very different situation here, r would refuse the challenge and simply say that he has no interest in selecting his partner's clothing bc s is an adult and fully capable of dressing himself. but if we held a gun to his head and forced him to pick s's cloth let’s be real he’d pick what sirius always wears anyways, not out of laziness but bc in spite of any teasing or purported disdain he secretly loves what s usually wears and think s looks so fuckin hot all the time. so ether way we should honestly just expect to see s in his usual sirius black uniform of docs, jeans, t-shirt, leather jacket, gay earring, dog collar, etc etc.

51. what’s a non verbal way they say I love you?

ohmygoshhh this question! could spend pages and pages answering this question. esp because i see both of them as mainly saying “i love you” non-verbally, prone to just leaving the words implied nine times out of ten (or more). so!

r saying “i love you” to s: in school, finishing the boring parts of his homework for him (!) & embarking on various ill-advised michiefs just to make s laugh; later, quietly organizing his records, clothes, books, toiletries, etc etc; cooking for s (even if let’s be honest he’s not very good at it); diligently writing/responding to letters whenever they’re separated; generally letting s pick what film they’ll watch or record they’ll listen to etc in spite of their taste often being drastically different (and r being quite certain that his is superior); taking padfoot for walks; sharing the crossword; dry but actually gentle teasing; leaving little notes around the flat that basically say nothing (went for eggs—tea in kitchen—back in twenty—etc.) but the love is traced in every letter

s saying “i love you” to r: aside from padfoot (!!) - learning healing spells & bringing r tea/chocolate/carry out etc. after moons; constantly bringing home silly little trinkets he sees while out & about as presents for r even tho r says over and over that he doesn’t need anything and to stop bringing him stuff (never); spending truly stupid amounts of money on r’s birthday and xmas gifts even though r says over and over that he doesn’t need fancy things and not to waste his damn inheritance (“it’s not a waste if you like it, moony!”), secretly buying & pretending to have an interest in records/films/books that he actually has no interest in whatsoever so that remus can “borrow” and enjoy them whenever he wants; affectionate teasing; going on walks as padfoot; sharing the crossword; saving every little note remus leaves for him, no matter how trivial or banal, bc he feels the love in every letter
