oh my goodness i can totally see sarah and bucky building a pillow fort together one night. i feel like sarah is the kind of person who likes a lot of pillows on her bed, ya know? and one night, after the boys are in bed and he and sarah are getting ready for bed, taking most of the pillows off before they get in bucky just… starts building a fort instead. at first sarah is all “what are you doing? and why?” and he’s like “there’s all these pillows, what did you expect me to do with ‘em?” next thing you know, sarah is in the fort and refusing to let bucky in unless he can guess the password. (the password is lots and lots of kisses)

ok i promised myself up and down i wouldn’t make posts like this anymore for my own mental health but i’ve been seeing a lot of, uh, takes in regards to the potential of sarah and bucky dating and a lot of confusion to why these takes are racist, insulting and hurtful, especially to black people. and for me? well, i won't lie, it's personal.

what non-black people need to understand is that positive portrayals of interracial romantic relationships between dark-skinned black women (yes, dark skinned) and non-black men are extremely uncommon in media. for example, can you think about any recent fictional portrayals of relationships of this kind? maybe rick and michonne from the walking dead? or abbie and ichabod from sleepy hollow? great, because those are the only two that i can think of off the top of my head.

okay, now how many of those relationships ended happily?

right.

as a next point, why do i highlight ‘dark-skinned’? because of colorism. you’ve probably seen that word thrown around a lot more in the past year. colorism is the discrimination within ethnic groups between those with lighter colored skin (and more eurocentric features and hair texture, i’m folding in featurism and texturism for ease) and those with darker skin.

the way this plays out in visual media is that it’s much more common to see lighter skinned black women in roles than darker skinned black women. when i was growing up, this was evident in both white-produced AND black-produced media. that’s so raven. sister sister. my wife and kids. the proud family, even. and to make it worse, it wasn’t uncommon for dark skinned black women in shows like these to be portrayed as unattractive, uncultured, or straight up bullies.

this isn’t me saying that we shouldn’t see light skinned or biracial black women in media. i want to emphasize that their life experiences and the pressures they have are different from mine. but i know that, because of colorism, i grew up thinking that the absence of Eurocentric features and a non Eurocentric body meant i was not beautiful and not worthy to be seen. and these truths can coexist. this is not an uncommon wound of colorism.

i say all this to say that for bucky barnes, a white man, to flirt with sarah wilson, a dark skinned black woman, is not the same as ‘just another het ship’. it is positive representation in its own right.

now, i’ve been in fandom for years. i’ve encountered this before. and i’ve encountered this enough to know that truthfully, these kind of ships make people truly uncomfortable and sometimes these people do a bad job of hiding it. what reason, i can’t say. if you ask me, i suspect part of the discomfort comes non-black people realizing they can’t project onto the black person in the ship in the same way they’re used to. i could be wrong. but i’ve been around enough to see a lot of pretzeling and back bending to discredit these sorts of relationships that don’t seem to come up for similar pairings if that same black woman was now white. and i’m seeing it again here, so i wanted to break down the most common takes i’ve either seen or i suspect i’ll see soon and break them down to explain why exactly you’ve been getting irritated replies and why they’re hurtful.

“bucky’s flirting with sarah to make sam jealous.” without thinking about it, this is actually a funny trope. sibling rivalry and all that. and you’re right, bucky doesn’t have to be attracted to sarah, and maybe you ship sambucky instead. but what if he can still find her attractive? this take subtly discredits the idea that bucky could find sarah attractive in her own right - there has to be some ulterior motive in order to explain it, yeah?

“bucky repeated sarah’s name like that because sarah was steve’s mom’s name.” we do know bucky knows steve’s mom’s name! but again, this feels like a lot of reaching to again, rework bucky’s potential attraction to sarah in a different context so it’s not actually genuine. in this case, he doesn’t like her, she just makes him think of his dead best friend’s mom, right?

“sarah’s so strong and badass, she doesn’t need a man! she deserves better.” okay. what does ‘deserving better’ actually mean? why can’t a potentially fulfilling relationship for sarah, a hardworking widow with two children, be deserving better? this also plays into the Strong Black Woman myth, in which black women are just So Strong and Self Sufficient and Powerful they don’t need anything! not even social aid! or protection! or love! or mental health support! let me be clear, this trope is not fun for us, it’s not a positive, it’s a burden that allows society to justify not protecting black women.

“this seems kind of forced/crowbarred in to me.” maybe, but also, in the episode, they really just said 'hi' to one another. now if sam had caught them making out on the boat two seconds after they met, that would have raised my eyebrows, but they just said 'hi'. some people are interpreting that as flirtatious - i'm one of them. but again, using words like 'crowbar' and 'force' or 'shove' make it seem like bucky's attraction to sarah is irrational.

now, here’s what i’m not saying. i’m not threatening you to ship bucky and sarah Or Else. you don't have to. i do. i think it’s fun! but that’s my choice. you don’t have to make that choice. you could be shipping someone else with either sarah or bucky and you don't want something to get in the way of that, i get it. i'm also not saying that sarah needs bucky's validation to be considered beautiful, far from it. what i’m saying is it’s worth it to evaluate the ways that implicit racism is affecting and influencing your responses to interracial relationships with black people, and especially black women in the media. because even if you might not see it, there are those of us who can. why can't the prospect of a white man flirting with a dark skinned black women be taken at face value? maybe sit with that.

i loved every minute we got and think we should’ve gotten more scenes of them together 😭

this is one of the few marvel ‘couples’ that didn’t feel forced. bucky is a goddamn natural flirt, who has also been single for like, a hundred years.

NOTP - stucky (don't come after me), I just wasn't that invested in Bucky before TFATWS and I love winterfalcon too much, I haven't got anything against it tho, on the whole I'm just indifferent.

OTP - winterfalcon/sambucky my beloved!!!!

I’m also currently reading a rather lovely stevebuckyloki. uhh have we seen my fics lmao? let’s see...either ransom’s bonus chapter for she gets the flowers (“all he wanted”) or lee’s bonus chapter for holding her heart (“here lies lee bodecker”)

I sure do! maybe let’s ride just based on the sheer amount of characters I'm planning on including. but I also once wrote a very strange percy jackson + the kane chronicles and twilight crossover, so maybe that. or that one time I tried to write justin bieber into national treasure, but we’re not gonna address that (I was nine, leave me alone) 

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

oh definitely. mostly in relation to updates. someone on quotev once said that they loved my story but they’d hate me if I didn’t update it. so, I just never updated it again cause fuck that kind of guilt trip. also, on one of my ever after fics, someone just gave a real backhanded compliment that was like “I love this but it should’ve been longer” that pissed me off. (it’s since been deleted cause I don’t need that kind of energy in my life lol) but that’s the tame stuff. I try to forget the harsher shit I've gotten lmao

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

yep! mostly tame-ish stuff? I've ventured into some noncon/dubcon material, but I have to be in the right headspace for that, which doesn’t come often lol.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

you bet your ass I have. most people deleted it as soon as I commented that they were thieves and what they’re doing is illegal, but some push back. wattpad and tumblr are usually good about taking stuff down. (or at least wattpad is if you’ve posted that work on wattpad, which is why I unfortunately crosspost over there) it’s cute tho how some people try to act like it’s a compliment that they stole your shit 😒

Have you ever had a fic translated?

well I've never given permission, but it has happened a couple of times cause people love just taking other people’s hard work 😍

percabeth ig? sarahbucky (or buckysarah?) is a relatively new ship to me, but I'm getting really into them, so they’ll probably be my otp soon enough.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

any percy jackson and twilight crossover I've done. but in terms of recent works, idk they’ll probably all be done, but I make no promises as to when.

What are your writing strengths?

maybe dialogue? I feel like that’s the one thing I can do really well.

What are your writing weaknesses?

definitely descriptions. I fucking suck at setting the scene and describing emotions, which is why so many of my fics are 

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

do your research. it’s long, and it’s hard, but it makes for a more immersive experience. if you can, try to find someone who speaks the language so they can translate for you, but if you can’t do that, definitely do a lot of reading to make sure you’re getting the right things. especially because some words have certain dictionary definitions but the way they’re used in speech is probably different from their definition.

25. Do they have hobbies they share?

in all universes they both like to read so they definitely enjoy doing that together and they enjoy recommending books to each other. in AUs where sarah’s not a chef by trade, cooking is a hobby of hers that she shares with bucky; she loves teaching him to make stuff, not because he’s a good student (he tries to be!) but because he makes it fun in the kitchen and is always stealing kisses.

27. Who is the lightweight who needs to be taken care of after a party?

in canon that is absolutely sarah because bucky has the serum so he’ll carry her home since she took her shoes off at some point in the evening and refuses to put them back on because it’s too hard and her feet need to breathe (it makes sense to her, okay?). in other verses, it’s usually bucky! especially if there’s a dog or cat around. he loves them so much and did she SEE its little paws? they have to get a pet immediately, are there any shelters open? maybe she can just put this kitten in her purse and it can be theirs.

3. Do they wear the other’s clothes? (sweatshirt, bandana, necklace, etc.)

in every verse, sarah wears bucky’s clothes; he’s always losing hoodies and t-shirts and joggers to her, which doesn’t bother him at all because she looks so much better in his clothes than he does. i think in canon, he sometimes accidentally finds himself wearing her oversized t-shirts when he just grabs something from the laundry.

5. Describe their cozy night in.

in canon, i think it’d be something like once the boys are in bed or at a sleepover, they put on some slow music so they can dance close together, hearts beating in rhythm, bodies moving as one. or getting in bed and snuggling up close while sarah watches some trash tv and bucky makes fun of it and eventually sarah finds herself joining in because he’s making excellent points about these idiots.

in all of my AUs, physical contact is always important for these two; they’ll spend quiet nights at home, reading books on the couch, sarah’s feet in bucky’s lap while he occasionally rubs them for her or bucky’s head in sarah’s lap while she runs her fingers through his hair (half the time she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it, she’s so engaged in her book). or he’ll lay his head in her lap while she reads a book out loud and he eventually dozes off…

in canon, sarah introduces bucky to the joys of midday rain showers in spring. how they can be good for naps or just sitting out and watching the lightning or for getting busy.

in other universes, they really enjoy getting snowed in together. in some universes, they use it as an excuse to stay in bed all day and be lazy. in others, a snow day is a great chance to go out and build a snowman or go sledding and drink lots of hot chocolate afterward.

57. Who’s the serious one when grocery shopping and who likes to toss random things in the cart?

in canon, sarah is very serious about groceries, she’s got two boys to feed on a budget so there is no room for deviation. bucky tosses random things in his cart and usually ends up hating them but sometimes he finds some good food to add to his rotating menu.

in AUs, she has a list but isn’t too fussy about following it, things that catch her eye get tossed in the cart right along with what she came there for. most of my AU buckys aren’t very adventurous with food so they go by what they can easily heat up. my mafia james doesn’t concern himself with grocery shopping because he employs a chef

30. Your OTP gets to pick out each other’s outfits; what is each wearing?

bucky would absolutely pick a button down dress like the girls used to wear when he took them dancing; he loved those dresses, and not just cuz he was really good at unbuttoning them. sarah would probably pick out a nice suit for bucky, something navy blue to make his eyes pop and nicely tailored pants that make his legs look even longer and leaner…

38. Who is more sexually experimental? Who’s more vanilla?

i think at first, sarah is more experimental than bucky is; while prewar bucky got around, i get the feeling he kept it pretty vanilla, not that he didn’t know about that kind of stuff, it just was more hush-hush than it is now and he would’ve been worried about seeming like a deviant cuz nice girls didn’t do those kinds of things. and i think at the beginning he still is worried about scaring off a nice girl. once he’s over that, though, i think they are equally experimental and eager to try things with each other’s consent. some of their experiments turn out better than others though but the stuff they don’t like usually ends in them both laughing about how it didn’t work rather than feeling bad about it.

48. Who’s the better driver?

sarah, no question. bucky seems to view driving as a challenge to get somewhere as quickly as possible whereas sarah cares about things like speed limits and safe stopping distances. but he drives like a grandma when he’s got the boys in the car. he’s not risking them or sarah’s wrath

51. What’s a non verbal way they say I love you?

there are a few ways! sarah will make extra helpings of dishes he really likes; bucky will bring home flowers on a random tuesday; when they’re cuddling on the couch or in bed, sarah puts her hand on his chest, over his heart; in passing, bucky will pull her close and press his forehead to hers

56. What do they do to turn the other on/put them in the mood?

sometimes bucky will draw a bubble bath for her, light candles, put some soft music on and tell her to soak while he gets the boys to bed and cleans up after dinner (which is a really good way to get himself invited into the bathtub for sexy times once he’s done cleaning up). slow dancing in the kitchen (or any room in the house, really); bucky is very tactile so sarah likes to take advantage of that by running her fingers through his hair then scratching her nails through the short hair at the back of his head, he gets all shivery and makes this little moan that gets her every time; sarah really likes when bucky talks dirty and tells her what he wants to do to her when he gets her alone
