Give me a character and I will answer

Why I like them: There’s complex characters and then there’s Jasper. The idea that a side mission from the first game is what caused the events of the second game still amuses and confuses me. Sure, there’s always one minor character that unintentionally gets involved in the main plot. But Jasper wasn’t present and didn’t have a plot till game 2 of No More Heroes. I also find it ironic that he’s supposed to be a parody of Batman and the Joker: green, purple, and with a bat insignia.

Why I don’t: It’s more or less that we only get his reveal and story at the end. Even then it’s just very blunt and there’s almost no point. You killed his family, he killed Bishop, and now it’s war. Big woop! It’s kind of a let down. It doesn’t really help that the most we get character wise is that he’s a bit of a drama nerd. (Shakespeare, Kung Fu, Westerns, etc) Other than that, we get zero explanation about his weapons, the serum is a bit of a deux ex machina, and don’t get me started on the blimp form. 

Favorite Episode: It was a game sequel so.. :Y

Favorite Line: “Hairy palmed geek!” (It’s my equivalent to “Rotten Cabbage Patch”!)

Favorite Outfit: Has to be the second phase wrestler/hero outfit. Mask, capes, gloves, boots? PERFECT ACCESSORIES!

Otp: Since he isn’t seen till the end, I don’t really think he’d hook up with anyone? I kind of suspected he’d probably fanboy over Alice Twilight, but that was just for fun. uwu

Brotp: I remember some old friends discussing how he might have gotten along with Charlie McDonald, as they both seem to have interests in robotics. It was also funny to think about the size differences as we suspected Jasper was below average height and we headcanoned that Charlie suffered from gigantism.

Unpopular Opinion: Jasper was a pretty decent character. His reason for battling Travis, though poorly planned out, was valid. Also, it’s Travis’s fault for going on side missions. xP

A Wish: I wish he’d return since, like new destroyman, he’d probably be alive. I don’t think it’ll happen though.

Oh-God-Please-Don’t-Ever-Happen: The world has stayed Jasper porn free for 8 years and it needs to stay that way. NOBODY FUCKING DO IT!

I tend to be a listmaker, though usually less for remembering things and more for getting organized. I’m more productive with a physical to-do list in front of me :)

Tough one! It’s gotta be the First, though. 

3. Best weather?

When it gets in the 80s (Fahrenheit) in April and May, before the oppressive heat and humidity set in.

Of all time? Nightfall in Middle-earth - Blind Guardian, Thriller - Michael Jackson, Folie à Deux - Fall Out Boy

7. What is your favourite myth/legend and why?

The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise Any Faust(us) tale - I love the universality of it - the archetype makes for a fantastic tragedy. (Plus Marlowe’s play has some A+ dialogue)

8. If you were in Middle-Earth and could choose on any side, be any race/creature, in any place, during any age, what would you want to be?

Gah, why is my gut reaction ‘a Fëanorian Noldo, of course’? But no. We’re going to think this through. I think I’d like to be one of Námo’s Maiar. You stay fairly safe, but still get to meet plenty of interesting (dead) people and maybe help them out. You’d get to hear a lot of stories firsthand.

9. Fave area of literature?

Fanfiction! No, I’m serious -- I’m a big fan of character-based stories, and I’ve read few novels that can touch the levels of character nuance you can find in a well-done fic.

10. Which art movement do you prefer?

I know woefully little about art, but I’d say Impressionism :)

11. Rogue, warrior, or mage, and why?

Mage all the way -- I’d be no use in a physical fight, I’m much more the strategic planning type.

.figure one // Darnell knows who – what – Dakota is. He can see it in the flexing of the other man’s jaw, he can see it in the look he is receiving and it’s unsettling, to be honest. The man is amused, at first – he’s not as confused as he pretends to be, but Dakota Clark does not say anything, does not give out his real name and identity and he has a reason why he doesn’t blow Darnell’s poor cover (why he doesn’t tell anybody that Darnell is not the Skinwalker, hey) and Darnell doesn’t understand him. At first he was amusement for the age-old killer, and then he’s become his habit.

.figure two // The problem, see, occurs because not only is Darnell Dakota’s habit, but Dakota has become his own too. There’s is a worm eating away at his stomach when he so much looks at the other man, and it hurts so badly. Not because he likes him and he doesn’t, but because he likes him and wants something to come out of it. He cannot let himself do this (he cannot kill himself like this, with feelings and unrequited love). He does kill himself like this, only slowly.

.figure three // Darnell doesn’t like him. He does not. It’s just—he’s seen him kill a man and threaten to kill a man and let’s not talk about the zombies in the middle of the zombie apocalypse right? The monster is three hundred years old and counting and he may look pretty stunning for that age, but—Darnell’s gotta be pretty desperate to like that. It’s just that when Darnell sees Dakota with Cecil – the tiny helpless child – and sees with how much care Dakota handles him, he really doesn’t— It doesn’t erase the stuff he did. It just gives Darnell hope.

.figure four // He’s quite doomed when the feelings are returned. It’s like being given your own death contract and signing it oh so willingly. He sure is a very happy lamb brought for a slaughter, and he’s sure Dakota will kill him in ways more brutal than the butchers use these days (Dakota is, after all, from the 2000s, and things were quite different back then than to the 24th century). He closes his eyes and prays that he will not be noticed.

.figure five // He is noticed. He’s become a habit and it’s hard to get rid of the habits and Dakota doesn’t seem to want to do it anyway. But Dakota, even though he is so assertive, he doesn’t seem to know what he wants either. His hands are not so firm on Darnell’s sides, and Darnell’s own are shaking at his elbow, but after the awkward first contact is done and over with, the mould together so perfectly. (He’s too happy for it to be healthy.)

.figure six // Separation doesn’t do him any good, and he thought it would – he thought it would make him sober up, make him realise the mistake that he is making and that he’ll cut this thing that they’re having at its roots. But most of those things don’t happen. Yes, he does sober up and yes, he does realise the kind of mistake that he is making, but it hurts so much to be apart from Dakota and he just wants him back at his side, so he can stop wondering if the other is okay at the other side of the world. This is not how it was supposed to go.

.figure seven // Darwin, Darwin, the one name always at Dakota’s lips, and it will only ever die if Darwin dies too. But he’s not easy to kill, not even after he is dead—Darnell knows, he’s seen Darwin’s brain scattered along the tiled white floor and he’s seen the blood spilling out and Dakota’s hands were shaking, shaking, shaking. He’s alive, though – the people are truly never dead if they are remember, and after three hundred years Dakota still remembers Darwin and the taunts and the names and the bruises. It hurts Darnell like they’re his own.

.figure eight // People heal. Slowly, but deliberately, things do get better, and he kisses around Dakota’s head and lets Dakota shower him with butterfly-light kisses too. They fit, perfectly so, and he learns Dakota how to navigate the household of 24th century just like Dakota teaches him how to set up a clock from 21st – the one they’ve found in the run-down museum and the one they’ve taken from there, for their new home. He’s not sure what makes him warmer: the fact that it’s theirs or that it’s home at all.

.figure nine // The betrayal is bitter in his mouth and Darnell doesn’t understand why when he’s the one doing the betraying here – he’s betraying his own team, his own people, his own colleagues and for what? For the love of a man? For the love of the monster? What for? Had he truly become like Ronnie Calandra, the being that does not want to die, the being so afraid of dying that he’d be willing to choose the wrong side? He takes one look at Dakota and he is sure that he has chosen right.

.figure ten // When all is said and done, and apocalypse averted – only few of the immortals left alive and so, so many real, human people dead – Darnell dares to check on his own home, his own family. She’s alive – his mother, the only family he has left, and he doesn’t want to cry but it sneaks up on him and he does anyway. Dakota is so kind with her, so gentle, and he remembers Cecil and compares the two and he finds himself wondering: who had broken this man so badly that he does not think he can hold fragile objects anymore? Who has taught him to think that fragile things break only so that they would hurt? Darnell knows, and Darnell is ready to prove Dakota that there are good things in world left.

.figure zero // “August,” Dakota tells him, “They’ve called me August.” If the name could feel like home, Darnell thinks, this is it, and he doesn’t mind one bit that his home is three hundred years old. He is safe here.
