2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

His loyalty. An underrated thing about Mick Rory. If he’s on your side, he’s never leaving it, and he would die for you. I just queued a gifset of the season 6 (I think?) scene where Mick persuades Sara to come home and tells her she’s his oldest friend (the ‘Rogue Canary with the missing member’ feels, I swear) and it’s like. He was devoted to Len for 20 years, in whatever way you want to interpret that devotion, and he gave that loyalty to Sara - who he calls Boss just enough times that you feel it - and that was no small thing for him. But he would defend her life with his, along with the rest of the Legends. And he did, a lot.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

The sheer weight and quality of creative fanon means we have so much history to draw on for Mick in fic. And it all comes from very few references. Burning down his house. The fight in juvie. The 30-year partnership with Len. And that’s… about it, I think? But look at the amount of young coldwave/young Mick fics and headcanons those lines have spawned. Incredible. I’ve never written a character (or pairing) with so much glorious fanon backstory. It is a gift. (And the fandom didn’t even do all that much with the rich vein of everything we learned later about his family. We had already had given ourselves so much to work with!)

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

It’s kind of related to my answer to question 2. I’m not a huge fan of the general fandom opinion that Mick was only ever mistreated by the Legends (or the writers) and hated every second of his time on the Waverider. Opinions will vary, of course, but I adore that found family for Mick. We do not speak of season two, which was poorly written and used Mick as a plot point, but for the most part after that I think it was clear that Mick loved the Waverider crew and vice versa. He grew as a person a lot on that ship, and he had an arc that I liked a lot overall, with some fantastic unlikely friendships. We got writer!Mick, and dad!Mick, and right-hand-man-to-Sara!Mick, and the growth of so many relationships we never could have predicted (don’t tell me he didn’t freaking adore Ava by the end, after the inevitable rocky start between them), and I loved it all. At times the writers liked to use him for a source of quick comic relief, and at other times his storylines were weird or nonexistent, and there was a little too much ableist writing there, but I still liked where he went on that show. I suspect it comes down to people who only like Mick with Len (romantically or otherwise) who didn’t like to think that Mick could have - and did have - a life beyond the Rogues. And I say all of this as a still deeply devoted coldwave fan, for they are truly my OTP. But still. I love Legends Mick, in a very different way from how I love Flash Mick, and I love the way he grew beyond Len.* Is a lot of my Legends Mick headcanon? Yep. Do I care? Nope. They gave me just enough to work with. :)

*I’m so tempted to get into how, while I love Mick with Len, their relationship was deeply codependent and Len clearly kept him from growing because he was a possessive bastard who loved Mick but also wanted to control his partner on his own terms. And how, even though it took Mick a while to realise he could be his own person outside of that partnership, he grew in some directions he never could have if Len hadn’t died. But that’s off topic - and hey, that headcanon is already in quite a few of my fics, with room for more… P.S. Did I mention I love coldwave and am also quite fond of Len (the possessive bastard) okay good

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

I love autistic Mick headcanons and playing with them. And of course, I love everything you can do with coldwave, because of all the fanon stuff I mentioned above. Hey maybe it’s time for another coldwave fic…

Nathan Young x f!Reader

Word Count: 1.3k Tags/Warnings: flirting, suggestive themes, pretty tame really Prompt: I decided to participate in @/yearoftheotpevent‘s Year of the OTP (except using reader inserts). For January’s prompt I chose ‘Snow’. a/n: Struggled with breaking out of some writer’s block, so I’m not sure how I feel about this one, but I’m glad I finished something.

“I can’t believe they’re makin’ us do our community service outside in this weather,” Nathan whined, half heartedly scraping his snow shovel through the wet slush that covered the sidewalk in front of the Community Centre. “Look, my trainers are already soaked through!” he cried, lifting a wet sneakered foot as evidence. “I can barely feel my toes!”

“Maybe you should’ve worn more weather appropriate attire,” Shaun drawled indifferently as he passed, a steaming cup of coffee in hand.

“Well maybe some of us don’t have weather appropriate attire!” Nathan countered, sneering at the back of the probation worker’s head.

Shaun paused as he opened the door. “That’s not my problem,” he shrugged, sparing a dry look for Nathan before pushing the door open with his shoulder and heading back into the warmth inside.

An incredulous scoff left Nathan’s mouth as he gaped after the man. “Fuckin’ prick!” he muttered, crouching down to grab a handful of wet snow and flinging it against the window in harmless retaliation.

“At least y’have a coat,” you muttered, huddling further in on yourself against the cold to keep your teeth from chattering. The thin long sleeved shirt you had on under your jumpsuit did little to protect from the icy wind that cut through you and threw heavy wet snowflakes in your face.

Nathan looked over at you, a frown pinching his brows. “Don’t’cha have one?”

“I do, but I left it at my stepmum’s. I didn’t think I’d need it yet,” you grumbled, blowing on your frozen hands in an attempt to thaw them somewhat.

Nathan’s frown deepened in thought for a moment. “C’mere,” he exclaimed, unzipping his coat.

At first you thought he was gunna offer it to you and you were about to protest, not wanting him to freeze either, until it became apparent he had something else in mind, holding his coat open for you and beckoning you over.

“Get in here.”

“I don’t think we’re both gunna fit,” you snorted, looking at him doubtfully.

“Will yeh shut it and just get over here? I’m losin’ th’rest of my body heat!”

Heaving a fond sigh, you did as he asked and moved closer, letting him wrap his arms and the sides of his coat around you. Almost instantly you felt warmth seep into you and you pressed your face against his chest, trying to get as close as possible. “Better?” Nathan asked, pulling back to get a look at you, a goofy grin on his face. “Yeah actually,” you replied, distracted by the snowflakes caught in his long lashes and the faint smell of his body spray. “Ugh, get a room,” Kelly muttered, rolling her eyes. “C’mon, let’s just get this done!” Alisha whined, interrupting the moment.

“Yeah, th’faster we get this done, th’sooner we get t’go back inside,” Curtis added, attacking the pile of snow in front of him with renewed vigour.

Instead of freeing you, Nathan simply picked up his snow shovel and shrugged. “This might be a bit awkward, but at least we’ll be warm,” he chuckled, his breath fanning warmly against your cheek. “I’m not lettin’ y’freeze on my watch,” he exclaimed, and you shuffled backwards as he attempted to continue clearing the sidewalk, smiling to yourself.

With every movement, however, you were reminded of just how close you were, hyper aware of his body pressed up against yours.

“Nathan!” Kelly groaned, her expression contorting in disgust as she passed, clearly overhearing his thoughts. “You’re disgustin’!”

“What? I can’t help it!” he laughed, carefully avoiding your curious look.

By the time the walk was clear–no thanks to you and Nathan, who mostly goofed off–and Simon had spread a layer of salt down, your cheeks and nose were flushed from the cold, and even Nathan’s coat wasn’t doing much to protect you any longer.

“C’mon, let’s get back inside,” you exclaimed impatiently, wriggling your toes uselessly in your sneakers.

“Don’t hafta tell me twice,” Nathan huffed, finally freeing you from his jacket and you all hurried inside to warm up.

Hastily toeing off your wet trainers as soon as you hit the locker room, you shucked your jumpsuit and hung it in your locker to let the sopping legs drip dry while Nathan plopped down on the locker room floor to pull his shoes off.

“I think there’s somethin’ wrong with my toes!” he cried, stripping his soaked socks off. “Look they’re turnin’ white and I can’t feel ‘em!”

“Sounds like th’beginning stage of frostbite,” Simon observed, leaning over from his locker to get a better look.

“Frost bite!?” Nathan yelped, his head whipping up frantically. “Are my toes gunna fall off?” he cried, gesturing wildly toward his bare feet.

“They might,” Simon murmured, wearing a tiny mischievous grin.

“Not if we get them thawed out,” you interjected quickly, throwing Simon a dirty look as you passed him, grabbing Nathan by the arm and hauling him to his feet. “C’mon,” you urged, dragging him to one of the shower stalls across the room and yanking the curtain shut behind you.

“Get th’hot water on!” Nathan whined, twisting the faucet handle all the way to hot.

“No, wait!” you yelped, smacking his hand way to dial it back. “We only want luke warm.”

“But I’m freezin’!” Nathan countered, pouting at you as the water spluttered on.

“If you go to hot too fast, you’ll scald yourself and not even feel it,” you explained.

Nathan frowned, taking your words in with a grain of skepticism. “Alright, fine!” he finally cried, unzipping his coveralls.

“Here lemme help y’with that,” you murmured, reaching out to grab hold of his arms to stabilize him as he shrugged out of the top half of his jumpsuit.

“Your hands are like ice!” he yelped and you couldn’t help but snort in amusement.

“Yeah, no shit! I’m just as cold as you are!” you countered, reaching out to feel the temperature of the water. “Okay, I think that’s good t’thaw out with and then we can crank up th’heat some more,” you murmured.

Nathan nodded, shedding the orange jumpsuit completely and sticking his feet under the stream of warmish water. “I’m never opposed t’turnin’ up th’heat,” he joked, giving you a cheeky grin.

“You’re such a flirt,” you chuckled, shaking your head ruefully before stripping the rest of your undergarments off while Nathan’s back was turned.

After a few minutes, his feet seemed to return to a normal pinkish colour, but when he turned to tell you he could feel his toes again, his gaze fell to your bare chest and the words died on his tongue.

“Well, hello there! If it isn’t my favourite girls! When did this happen?” he asked, unable to tear his eyes away as he pulled you into his arms.

Grinning, you wrapped your arms around his shoulders as the water rolled over you, pressing your chest against his, just as you had earlier when he’d wrapped you in his coat, except now there were considerably fewer layers between you.

“Wanna tell me what you were thinkin’ bout earlier that Kelly overheard?” you asked, glancing up at him, the water plastering his curls to his head.

Nathan’s chapped lips pulled into a smirk at the thought and he shifted against you, his cock slowly stirring in response, pressing against your hip. “It had somethin’ t’do with wishin’ we were wearin’ less…” he replied, his gaze flicking over your face. “Kinda like we are right now.”

“Look’s like y’got your wish,” you murmured, arousal tingling through you to pool low in your gut and between your legs.

“Will y’look at that,” Nathan teased lightly, though his voice had turned husky. “Would y’like t’know what else I was thinkin’ about?” he asked, dangling the implication tantalizingly before you, his chest rising and falling against yours with each breath he took waiting for your answer while the water trickled down your bodies, warm seeping into you.

“I think I’d rather you show me.”

Yeah, sure, gonna do this too. Here’s a list of some of my ships and also just some dynamics I’m really fond of:

Gonna start with my explicit romantic ships, ranging from OTP (my personal description of an OTP is a pair I cannot imagine in any other relationship) to ships I’m just very fond of.

ContraHero (duh, my OTP of all time)

ParaCold (smth of a secondary OTP, I’d say, since I also can’t imagine them in any other relationship lmao [at least, long-term])

Foreign Body (Quiet/Stranger) (I can’t imagine the heart not being Stranger, tbh, and also, smth about the both of them having a ‘monstruous’ form aksmdjddj)

Skeptunist (it’d be a slooooooww and LOOOONNNG burn, but I think the progress would be so interesting and the eventual relationship so weirdly sweet)

Ghost Lily (Spectre/Witch) (reaching OTP to me, ngl, as I can’t bring myself to be invested in other relationships involving them lmao)

Sweethearts (Smitten/Damsel) (have no problems imagining them with others, but this is still my primary ship for them)

Eternal Challenge (Stubborn/Asversary) (same situation as above)

Those are the ones that actively takes up more brain space, and ones which I most rotate around my head. Here’s some general dynamics I like exploring:

North Star (Cold/Oppy): their toxic yaoi wouldn’t last a year and be horrible for the both of them (mainly Oppy), and I’m all here for it.

Smitten and Skeptic, while not in OTBesties tier for me, is also a friendship I’m very fond of. I think they’d have coffee in the morning together.

Nightmare’s possible dynamic with anyone would be so interesting to explore, but especially with Tower– just. imagine the chaos

Speaking of– also Tower’s dynamic with Razor. Put her in the same room with some of the most relentless and violent vessels, I wanna see what happens

Wraith and Cheated would be an interesting dynamic when taken out from their chapter’s context tbh– Wraith is resentful because of how she’s been treated and only resorted to those drastic actions because that’s what you left her with. I think Cheated would sympathize with that and realize the hand he played (if you get him in her chapter) to get her like this.

Oppy and Hunted feel like they’d have a weirdly close and strong bond. Not OTBesties or explicitly romantic, but a secret fourth thing

Oppy and Contra have beef at first sight to me. They either completely ignore each other, or swear to make the other day’s worse, whatever they feel like atm

Also– since me and the folks in the discord started headcanon that while alive, Narrator could’ve been groomed by a cult and that’s why he has such a deep fear of death, and think eternal bliss is the best alternative for that– I’d like to see more of his dynamic with Broken. In a what-if scenario where they both got over enough of their bagage to have an actual conversation together, I think they’d have a lot to talk about.

Also, shout-out to my Happily Single Tokens, aka, characters I hc as non-partnering/not interested in romance/‘just not in the mood for it, dude’:

Wenzhou for the scary OTP meme?

You have unleashed a storm 😂. I am unwell about these two. Which one is more fond of scary movies: Wen Kexing! I think he’d be really into cheesy 80s slasher movies and he always gives a running commentary on how the killer should handle his victims. Zhou Zishu spends his time pointing out all the plot holes and picking apart the impractical death scenes.

(“Bones don’t break like that” “A-Xu, that’s not the point”)

Which one gets the most excited about Halloween: Zhou Zishu! He’ll never admit that he’s excited, of course, but he always goes a little too hard with the decorations. He builds them all by hand, I’m talking full haunted house levels of yard decor. He starts planning in the summer. He’s also that guy that dresses up and sits on the front porch. You know, the one everyone thinks is a prop until some kid tries to take the whole candy bowl and he scares the fuck out of them (then pretends he doesn’t understand their terror).

Which one would be more likely to survive the apocalypse: Both! They’re both meticulous and ruthless. They’d know how to fight and how to survive on very little. They’d definitely have some kind of camp set up, full of really terrible traps. I’m picturing a similar setup to “Long, Long Time” from TLOU.

(Rest under a cut so this isn’t ridiculously long).

Which one would literally kill for the other: Once again, both. These two are not shy about killing lol.

Which one likes to scare or startle the other: Ha, I think Wen Kexing likes trying to startle Zhou Zishu because he’s so aware of himself and his surroundings that it presents a fun challenge. Zhou Zishu rarely actually gets scared (but sometimes he pretends anyway, just to see Wen Kexing’s reaction). Wen Kexing does NOT like being startled, he will react on reflex and you don’t want to be the one on the receiving end of that. (Zhou Zishu knows this even if Wen Kexing hasn’t exactly said it. Zhou Zishu has his fun by goading Wen Kexing into fights lol).

Which one is more likely to need comforting when they get spooked: Continuing from above, Wen Kexing. He retreats into himself and gets very quiet and distant and Zhou Zishu has to give him his space for a while before attempting to draw him back out again. You will not bring him to any of those haunted house attractions unless you’re prepared to deal with the repercussions.

Which one always puts on a brave face: Hm, I initially wanted to say both but Zhou Zishu is THE master of repressed emotion. He’s burying his fear so deep that he’s convinced himself he’s totally fine. Put him in a group of other people and this increases tenfold lol.

Which one would be more dangerous if they suddenly became violent: WEN KEXING. This man can both take and inflict damage without flinching. He’s slaughtered dozens of ghosts and he can easily slaughter a dozen more. His technique is “I was raised by monsters and I will live by any means necessary”. Basically, good luck lol. (Forever thinking about that scene in TYK where Scorpion King shows up and Wen Kexing is tearing people’s heads off with his bare hands. What a guy.)

Which one would be more likely to commit a crime: These two are career criminals. Whichever one decides to Do A Crime, the other will be right there with them holding the gun. Zhou Zishu is more likely to do some hitman type stuff and less likely to get caught but he’s not opposed to other illegal activities. (They’re really two fucked up peas in a pod, aren’t they? Lol)

Which one believes in ghosts: Zhou Zishu. Not something he openly admits but he’s seen one or two things he can’t really explain and who’s to say what really happens after you die? (No, it’s certainly not because he thinks he deserves to be haunted, why would you think that? Stupid.)

Which one likes to watch spooky shows on television: Unlike movies, which take up too much time, Zhou Zishu likes to throw on shows like The Twilight Zone for background noise when he’s working out or tinkering in the garage. He has no idea what happens each episode but he likes the practical effects.

Which one would propose the idea of holding a seance: Wen Kexing, because he doesn’t believe in ghosts and thinks it would be fun. Zhou Zishu is staunchly against the idea. Jing Beiyuan would volunteer to be part of the seance (Did you know he’s clairvoyant? Yeah, he has some seeing abilities. He can remember all of his past lives.) which sours Wen Kexing’s enthusiasm a bit. Wu Xi thinks it’s all ridiculous, why can’t they just have dinner and hang out? (Yes I did randomly turn this into a mini fic oops lol)

Which one has nightmares more often: Wen Kexing. He’s already a light sleeper and he wakes up periodically throughout the night. He used to have night terrors as a child and so he developed a habit of just…staying awake. Zhou Zishu makes sure they stick to a routine, which helps (tea before bed, making sure the room is quiet and comfortable, being within reach for if Wen Kexing does have a bad nightmare).

Which one would want to explore a real haunted house: Zhou Zishu would (after much deliberation and feigning indifference). As stated above, Wen Kexing thinks ghosts aren’t real and he has no interest beyond passing curiosity but, of course, he will go on the tour with A-Xu.

What do you think of MC x Wayne? The devs' most favorable pairing above all the characters, in spite of Stella being the #1 popular Li. Isn't he supposed to be our otp for the main player? I know that you don't seem very fond of Wayne lately because of how he feels and treats your main Li, especially how he is going to feel about that character's unfortunate outcome in one of the bad endings involving a character's death? Also, who will you romance if you are not together with Reese? Oscar or Stella, perhaps?

gotta be honest, this feels like bait.

first off - i’m so confused by a lot of this. i don’t think the devs ever said mc x wayne was their favorite pairing, or that it was supposed to be an otp for the player character??? the way the game works is that there is no “otp” for the player character - you can choose to romance whoever you want, or no one at all; it’s all dependent on your individual playthrough.

second - i don’t really think ive said that the reason i dislike wayne is because of how he treats reese. i mean, that definitely doesn’t help, but my main beef with him is how he treats the MC. he acts like you’re an idiot who can’t make decisions for yourself (but only if you make decisions he doesn’t agree with - very controlling) and denies the MC autonomy by refusing to listen when they tell him to stop doing things, like following them around or threatening to hurt their friends (which, in the case of reese, he actually goes through with). he’s also just an asshole, and i don’t enjoy the way he talks about a lot of people and creatures.

in general, his behavior and personality remind me of creepy asshole guys i’ve had to deal with in my past, and it kind of baffles me when people try and paint him as a good guy. he’s not meant to be a good guy. i think a lot of people know that and that’s why they’re drawn to him (and i get it bc i have plenty of villains i love lol), but I’ve seen just as many people who act like it would be crazy to want to get away from Wayne and the best course of action is to let him have full control and “protect” you all the time. like, if you want that for your playthrough, that’s great, go for it. but i take umbrage with the idea that it’s an objective reality that everyone needs to accept.

now, all this is to say that i do think he’s a well written character. i like him as an antagonist and i think the devs did a great job of creating him in a way that elicits real fear. love him as a character, but despise him when i’m actually experiencing the game as MC, and when people act like I’m committing a crime by disliking him and i need to change my opinion. everyone seems to get it when you say you hate sybil, but if you say you don’t like wayne, people act like you’ve confessed to murder.

moving away from that rant, this message is just baffling in general lmao. quickly addressing most everything else - i’m fine with the concept of mc x wayne, everyone can ship what they want, it’s just not for me, and i dont want to be told that it is the “canon route/best route” and everyone should love it and choose it or whatever. ive never really talked about stella so idk where you got that i would want to romance her??? she’s one of the characters im just not attracted to bc she’s not my type. i will always choose reese in every playthrough bc i feel like im abandoning or betraying him if I don’t, but if I couldn’t choose him, I would choose oscar, followed by kaneeka.

i’m hoping this is enough to end any more questions from you, because if you come back with more bait/troll type messages, I’ll probably just block.

New Rare Pair Just Dropped.

I’ve had a hard time finding parings I like for Bumi because I’m so fond of the idea of him as a bachelor. But now I’ve found a new OTP. Precious rare pair.

I’m curious as to what your opinions are on the ships in ONK. I’m guessing you’re not an Aquaruby fan (neither am I) but what do you think of Aquakana? Or any other ships in ONK! Personally my favorite is Ai x Happiness :)

Out of the "official" OnK ships tho, you're right in that I don't really care for AquRuby, at least as presented in the text. It was never going to be a ship I was on board with since I'm just too exhausted with anime being the way it is about sibling incest to even pretend to take it seriously but the manga itself also seems to have the same attitude. Since 123, Ruby's feelings for Aqua have mainly been treated as a joke that relies on having Ruby act out a caricature of an archetype that was ALREADY shallow and dated in the 2010s lmao. I think Ruby -> Aqua would at least be interesting to read about if the story was actually willing to take her seriously and properly examine her feelings in a way that feels consistent with her character and to actually dig into the reality of a person developing incestuous feelings in a society that condemns incest rather than using her as a gag prop. I care less about it being incest and more about it being badly written incest basically LOL

AquAka I think it's interesting on paper and there's a lot of elements to it I think are really neat to chew on in discussions and character analysis but as a ship, it doesn't really work for me in execution. Part of it is that I don't really like how Aka handled most of Akane's stuff post TB and most of it is just that the majority of their "real" relationship happens like... offscreen, in a time skip? So there was no real time to get attached to their dynamic as a real couple and I'm the kind of person who mostly gets invested in ships based on the strength of their moment to moment banter and rapport. AquAka have a lot of big, dramatic moments but I didn't feel like they quite had the necessary downtime rapport to serve as the connecting tissue that would've made it land.

It also doesn't help that I feel like, a lot of what *I* think is interesting about AquAka is really not what the fandom sees in it LOL So it's really hard to discuss the elements I like without people getting Genuinely Angry At Me for daring to say the relationship is unhealthy or that both Aqua AND Akane completely fucked up and that's why it didn't pan out. That conflict and tension and the simmering undercurrent of codependence and toxicity that both of them unintentionally brought to the relationship is sooooooo fascinating but I feel like so many people actively talking about AquAka just kind of ignore that and treat it as an entirely wholesome, uncomplicatedly good relationship and Akane as completely flawless within its context. I think that's both unfair to Akane and kind of boring but I've also really drifted away from the question here, huh...

Anyway! AquKana is the 'canon' OnK ship I like the most by far! I wouldn't say I'm like Actively Shipping It in the sense that I go out of my way to seek out fanworks about it, but I think they're cute together and I like them, especially in the anime - I've said before it was the adaptation that made me actively a fan of Kana and that goes for AquKana, too. Like I said up there, a couple's moment to moment banter and dynamic is really important to me and that's a big part of the AquKana appeal to me. I really like the way they bounce off each other and I particularly enjoy the way Kana encourages Aqua to be a better version of himself - not necessarily in an "I can fix him" way but in that his friendship with Kana encourages him to be better out of respect and fondness for her. Kana serves as a sort of window into life as a normal boy for Aqua, with no revenge or ulterior motives, and in that space a lot of Aqua's worst traits that are exacerbated by trauma get softened and filtered through a kinder lens. I also really love the ways Aqua's support helps to uplift and encourage Kana to do her best - she was such a lonely person for so long, seeing the way she glows once she has someone to shine for is so sweet.

I definitely don't feel as strongly about it now as I did coming right off the anime because it's been pretty out of focus for a while... Honestly, come to think of it, I think that's part of why AquAka didn't really hook me at all. It's hard to get invested in something that's making a character you already liked more feel so bad LOL

Circling back to Ai, though... Ougghh it really does kill me there's no straightforwardly lovey dovey ships for her in OnK. I'm a lifeform that draws sustenance from seeing my faves getting loved and doted on, especially when they're someone as starved for love as Ai... don't get me wrong, I love KamiAi and AiNino because yandere love is pure love but sometimes I just want to see nice things happen to her...!!!

Anyway this is the part where I pull out my License To Be Cringe And Free and admit that I do have a whole bunch of crosscanon OTPs for Ai that I've written with friends LOL Honestly I do feel very spoiled with how many I've gotten to write and how good they've been... I've even commissioned some art here and there. So if you're ever on an internet walk and stumble across a piece of art that makes you go "hold on, why is Ai holding hands with Rinne Amagi from EnStars" or something, you have this bitch to thank!!!

While I don't play around with it too often I like the idea that he keeps Mungojereie around begrudgingly, he hates his guts but he's useful and Mungo often teeters the line of co-workers as pals and refers to Macavity as such which he happens to do on the occasions that Macavity isn't in the mood to stifle someone.

and that made Macavity lose it, to be fair most jellicles assumed he’d take over after Deuteronomy strictly because of age and inheritance of magic but fate said otherwise and when his father told him he snapped. he grew disdainful, and easily tempered, and aggravated which led to him neglecting his duties completely and eventually boiling into him leaving the tribe.

but his powers only started to sting years later, when he’d hypnotize strays, attack the innocent etc. He was using a gift for harm and the everlasting cat didn’t like that. Soon his magic would take a lot more force to control, he grew tired more easily, his fur was thinning and even falling out daily, he got thinner and his mind was eating away at him. It was torture, just like the torture he had put so many others through.

Unpopular opinion

His portrayal in 98 is one of the weakest for me, his makeup was so overdone that he didn’t even look like a cat and the ways his scenes were edited were hard to follow in general.

A wish

I think it was Il sistina that did this but they had Macavity sort of spying or watching Demeter as she was singing his song (might have been Bomba’s part too) but I thought that was cool and you know more stage time for him so might as well. I just think it’s neat.

Baldwin for the send me a character 💫

Of course! Let me present the tea on everyone’s favourite leper:

favourite thing: his altruism. Baldwin always puts other people and his kingdom first, no matter how fragile his health is and how badly things could go for him if he isn’t careful. His tendency for self-sacrifice makes him both a great king and a very sympathetic (and badass) character, but it also has a heart-breaking quality to it in the sense that he seems to think he has nothing else to live for or look forward to. His role as the king he thinks he must be overshadows all else.

least favourite thing: the leprosy that he's a bit too perfect personality-wise. I know much of it comes down to his sadly very limited screen time in the film, but even in fiction and fanfic, Baldwin sometimes just seems a little too angelic for my taste. He’s clever, he’s wise, he’s gentle, he’s an accomplished warrior and commander, he’s tolerant, he’s kind, he’s witty … you get the gist. I’m not saying that he isn’t or shouldn’t be awesome, because he is, but our man could do with one or two flaws, as far as I’m concerned.

favourite line: "None of us know our end, really, or what hand will guide us there." I mean, all of Baldwin's lines are great and endlessly quotable, but this one has a sweet, wistful, carpe-diem quality about it that really resonates with me.

BrOTP: Baldwin & Salah ad-Din. I love, love, love their dynamic – how respectfully they treat each other and what wonderfully deep conversations they could have if circumstances were just a little different. Their personalities complement each other really well, I think.

OTP: Not sure. At the moment I'm quite fond of the idea of Baldwin x Balian or Baldwin x fem!Balian because I quite like their character chemistry, but I’m still somewhat undecided about the logistics of the whole thing. But in theory Baldwin is quite shippable in general, which opens up a great amount of possibilities yet to be explored. I’ve also encountered some nice Baldwin x Salah ad-Din fics in the wild.

NOTP: Baldwin x Raymond, for reasons I mentioned before.

random headcanon: If I ever were to write a daemon AU for KoH, Baldwin's daemon would be a dove. Not only would it match his aesthetic really well, but the biblical reference would also fit the goal he dedicated his life to quite nicely. Perhaps I'll write a snippet one day.

unpopular opinion: I would probably like him better if the film had presented him as a little less angelic and a little more human.

Favorite thing about him- Honestly, everything. In literally every version of Newsies I’ve heard of, he’s just so silly and goofy but still retains that kind of street-smart, wary air about him, and his character is just so fun and amazing!

Least favorite thing about him- He traded his mom for a box of cigars, what a bad son >:( /j

Favorite line- “Could you stow the seriosity long enough to just drink in the moment… *gasp* I’m famous!!!”

brOTP- Race and Davey. Just the vibes, y’know. They’d be best of friends- Davey would keep Race out of jail, and Race would teach Davey to live a little.

OTP- This is honestly the hardest question of this. I love Sprace, and Ralbert, and Spralbert… can’t choose :(

nOTP- Race/Jack (Rack? Jace?). As with a couple other ships I’m not fond of, I just think they’d never see each other as anything more than brothers.

Random headcanon- Race loves strawberries. He’ll steal/eat any he sees at farmer’s markets or in people’s houses (he’s been caught stealing strawberries from the Jacobs’ more than once). He loves the sweetness, and they remind him of being a small child.

Unpopular opinion- I don’t really love the notion that Race is some dumb, slutty twink. It’s a hilarious thing to write for him, and it’s funny to read when done right, but I think as a street-hardened newsie he wouldn’t be so… soft, y’know?

January OTP Prompts

The second to last one! Here we go! The home stretch! This was another one I almost forgot about / lacked all motivation to finish once I remembered it was a thing. I was too excited about the new You Know Where the City Is chapter.... BUT here it is!

30. Catching snowflakes on tongue

“Anyway, that’s why I think it’s important that we—” George paused, breaking off sharply, slowing his step, mumbling an apology to a businesswoman who bumped into him, not expecting his sudden change of gait to disrupt the flow of sidewalk traffic. He looked to his left and frowned when he realized that Matty was no longer keeping pace at his side. His frown deepened and he turned back to see Matty stopped a few yards away, his head tilted back and his tongue sticking out.

“Um, Matthew,” George said slowly, cautiously, wondering if Matty had suffered the psychotic break he always joked about. “Em, what are you doing?” The joke was never funny, and George was worried it was about to become even less funny.

“Catching snowflakes on my tongue,” Matty said as if that explained absolutely everything. People glaring as they had to change their trajectory to move around him. George frowned. It explained nothing. He hadn’t even realized it had started snowing until Matty mentioned it. But it was, fluffy flurries falling from the sky, landing on Matty’s tongue, glittering like diamonds as they landed in his dark gray streaked curls.

“Em, why?” George asked, retracing his steps to stand in front of Matty again, he could see the cloud of his breath as he panted, letting the snowflakes fall and instantly melt as they landed on his pink tongue. The center of his tongue was stained blue from the blue raspberry lollipop he had been sucking on earlier, trying to feed his oral fixation as he tried to cut down on smoking with varying results.

“Because it’s fun,” Matty said, returning his tongue to his mouth to look at George with bright eyes. George was suddenly overcome with such a strong wave of fondness, such a strong feeling of love that he couldn’t help but step into Matty’s space, pulling him into his arms and pressing their lips together, Matty’s lips and tongue were cold from the snow against his own warm ones.

“What was that for?” Matty asked when George pulled away, sounding slightly dazed as he looked upon George with the same love that George felt, deep in his chest and tingling in his frozen toes.

“I love you,” George said as an explanation. “I love you so fucking much and I’m grateful everyday that we get to go through this life together.”

“Aw,” said Matty, his eyes glittering, a smirk curling the corners of his lips. He patted George’s cheek. “I love you too babe,” he paused, “anything in particular that brought this on? Anything you need to tell me...” Matty trailed off, suddenly looking concerned.

George snorted, “you’re just really fucking cute,” George elaborated, “and I really fucking love you.”

“Well,” said Matty, letting his hand drop from George’s face so they could intertwine their fingers. “It’s a good thing I love you then isn’t it?”

He paused, hesitating, his wicked grin coming back, “even though you forgot to empty the dishwasher this morning.”

Which one is more fond of scary movies: Oh Cassian, for sure. He does a great job of laughing at them, saying he’s not scared, making fun, etc., but it Sits With Him afterwards, and I bet he’s initially not as good at hiding his response to jump scares as he wants to be, but trains himself ruthlessly until he’s mastered his flinch instinct. Brasso I think will watch with him, but he probably nit-picks at stuff that doesn’t make sense. I think Brasso is a ‘why don’t they just switch the light on?’ kind of viewer. It probably doesn’t haunt him afterwards, but there’s maybe a bit of grousing about ‘why did they even make this?’ if it’s particularly bad. Equally, if it’s a good movie he has no problem saying so and enjoying it, but doesn’t really let it haunt him.

Which one gets the most excited about Halloween: I wonder what kind of equivalent Ferrix has? It must be something to do with the stones, right, a kind of festival of remembrance? It’s probably bittersweet for Kassa initially if he’s familiar with other ways of celebrating the ancestors/remembering the dead. I wonder if those traditions got totally disrupted on Kenari though? It looks like all the older generations have been wiped out, do enough of the kids that are left know/remember the ways to honour their dead? Ok well, having made myself sad about that, I suppose the answer’s probably Brasso on Ferrix, but I bet when Cassian’s a bit older he’s drawn in by the local customs and enthusiasm – I’m sure there’s great food, and amazing songs and stories, and games to prove himself at.

Which one would be more likely to survive the apocalypse: TEAMWORK baby, they survive together. I won’t hear anything else.

Which one would literally kill for the other: I mean. Both. Again. That’s the point, isn’t it?

Which one likes to scare or startle the other: I think Brasso realises pretty quick that anyone trying to startle Cassian is going to get a spear up their nose/a blaster/punch to the gut. He’s not one to have tested that anyway. So if anyone’s trying to startle anyone else it’s definitely Cassian sneaking up and seeing if his victim has a guilty conscience at being interrupted doing whatever he was doing.

Which one is more likely to need comforting when they get spooked: Mmm, I wanna say Cassian again of course, after those scary movies linger in his subconscious and he has a dream of bright-yellow poisoned bodies pouring out of a spaceship on his home planet :’) But then again, if anything spooked Brasso like space-travel seems to, I think he's blue-screen until Cassian helped him through it.

Which one always puts on a brave face: Oh both, again – again that’s part of the appeal. Cassian more competently when it really comes down to it though – there’s no brave face on Brasso when he gets in that spaceship at the end of Episode 12.

Which one would be more dangerous if they suddenly became violent: I mean. *gestures at brick* *gestures at blaster* both are armed, Cassian has a far lower threshold for violence I think, but that’s partly the situations he ends up in. Equally, when you fuck around with Brasso or his friends you’d better be prepared to find out.

Which one would be more likely to commit a crime: Again, both. But for the most part Brasso’s are probably minor, victimless crimes that are like the equivalent of nicking office stationary, if your office is a spaceship salvage yard, and, you know, lying to the police. Cassian commits the big crimes. And then Brasso commits big crimes too on his behalf.

Which one believes in ghosts: I think both do. Brasso maybe more so after Scarif. Cassian maybe tries to tell himself he’s not worthy of being visited by ghosts, but the boy is carrying Kenari’s ghosts with him wherever he goes, and Clem, and Kino, and Nemik, and…*sob* you get the idea.

Which one likes to watch spooky shows on television: I think they’d both enjoy trying to figure out how ‘haunted house’ shows or real life mysteries are actually constructed – double-guessing how the props were constructed/special effects were achieved etc. Just absolutely ripping it apart together.

Which one would propose the idea of holding a seance: Cassian, to scare the other kids on Ferrix. Brasso would either be in on Cassian’s scam to fake a result, or there to be the level-headed one when a ghost talks back and it’s Cassian who gets freaked out.

Which one has nightmares more often: Cassian, for sure.

Which one would want to explore a real haunted house: Again, I think they’d go and test every creaking floorboard/poke about in every cobwebby keyhole until they figured out its secrets. Unless we’re talking about *real* haunted houses, in which case I’d defer to @r0b0tb0y and ask where Brasso fits into the 1 Rogue Street universe...
