au in which an admiral tells Captain Kazansky that marriage could help his career by silencing the whispers and rumours about him and Mitchell. Ice smiles politely without answering before taking another sip from his champagne flute. And that's that.

Or at least he thought it would be the end of it.

Until the rumour of the conversation doesn't reach Maverick, and he panics because he can't be the reason Tom's career dies before it even begins. And does what he thinks is best to save his appearance, Tom, and his future. He sets him up on a date with a single mom from Bradley's class and waits until that same afternoon to tell Ice.

"You have a date tonight with one of the moms from Bradley's class. She is waiting for you at eight." He declares as he removes his shoes and places baby Goose's schoolbag on the ground.

Ice doesn't move from the couch, papers lie on the table, and a glass of water on a coster, in the centre of it all. "Excuse me, you did what, Mitchell?"

"It's-it's for the best Ice. You- it's going to help your career and you're goin-"

"Mav." Ice murmurs, taking his face between his hands. "I don't want to date anyone except for you, and I like my life here. If I don't make it to Admiral, it isn't going to be the end of the world because I'll still have you and Bradley. That's all that matters. Do you understand me, baby?"

"But you-it-Ice I-y-"

"Maverick. It's okay. I love you. Please don't make me date someone because you think it is going to help, it would just make everybody miserable, don't you think?"

Maverick finds himself hiding from the world, from the clock that's running, and from a voice in his head that says to let go of Ice because he deserves better, against his partner's chest.

"Okay, okay, Ice." He answers, not sure of what he could add or say differently to convince the man to go out with somebody else's. Ice kisses him once and then twice before taking him by the hand and onto the couch. "We're going to cuddle until Bradley is back, order some food, and we're going to watch something dumb on TV until we can forget about what happened today."

Mav can't help smiling at the man in front of him: "Only if it's something dumb and age-appropriate!" He continues, shifting a book from the couch to the table.

"Only if it is age-appropriate!" Ice echoes him, kissing his forehead, and, for a couple of hours at least, the rest of the world and the Navy stay out of the door and their lives.
