“Five Good Things” by Our Daily Bread:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” —Psalm 107:1
“According to research, people who are intentionally grateful for what they have report better sleep, fewer symptoms of illness, and more happiness. Those are impressive benefits. Psychologists even suggest keeping a “gratitude journal” to improve our well-being, writing down five things we’re grateful for each week.
Scripture has long promoted the practice of gratitude. From meals and marriage (1 Timothy 4:3-5) to the beauties of creation (Psalm 104), the Bible has called us to see such things as gifts and to thank the Giver for them. Psalm 107 lists five things Israel could be especially grateful for: their rescue from the desert (vv. 4-9), their release from captivity (vv. 10-16), healing from disease (vv. 18-22), safety at sea (vv. 23-32), and their flourishing in a barren land (vv. 33-42). “Give thanks to the Lord,” the psalm repeats, for these are all signs of God’s “unfailing love” (vv. 8, 15, 21, 31).
Do you have a notepad handy? Why not write down five good things you’re grateful for now? It might be the meal you just enjoyed, your marriage or, like Israel, God’s rescue points in your life to date. Give thanks for the birds singing outside, the smells from your kitchen, the comfort of your chair, the murmurs of loved ones. Each is a gift and a sign of God’s unfailing love.”

Some people love violence and division. Don’t lose heart. They will not win. God is looking for courageous believers to share His light and peace with our desperate world. What seems like a crisis might be your opportunity to show someone God’s love.

A Heart of Gratitude
Tumblr media
💜 For many of us, being grateful does not come naturally. It's certainly not a default response, but something that needs to be nurtured in our daily walk with God.
Complaining comes all too easily and so does self-pity. Grumbling and mumbling our way through problems doesn't mix well with God's command in today's passage: to be thankful in all circumstances.
God has given each of us so many blessings, but these gifts alone are not enough to bring us lasting joy. His gifts must be combined with our gratitude. If we don't turn our blessings into praise on our lips, then our blessings could turn into pride in our hearts. Gratitude isn't just a feeling. It's a practice and it must be cultivated daily until it becomes a lifestyle.
Gratitude seems to multiply God's blessing. It somehow makes what we have go further, but have you taken time to notice just what you've been given? What blessings might we have missed simply because we have taken things for granted? Have we failed to give God praise for all He has done for us?
Gratitude is a small practice that can make a big difference in our lives.
Choose to verbalize your thankfulness! Share about how good God has been to you! Everything in our walk with God begins with being thankful. Which is why Paul instructs us to be thankful in everything! God's heart will always be stirred by our gratitude.
As your cup overflows with thankfulness, the joy will spill out to others.
We must display through our lives that being joyful isn't what makes us grateful. It is by being grateful that makes us joyful. So let us choose to rejoice joyfully, pray continually, and be thankful in all circumstances this year!✝️

“In a world that promotes self-gratification and self-preservation, we can be tempted to hoard instead of living with giving hearts. However, the Bible says that a person who “gives freely . . . gains even more” (Proverbs 11:24). Our culture defines prosperity as having more and more and more, but the Bible says that “a generous person will prosper” and “whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (v. 25).
God’s unlimited and unconditional love and generosity continually recharge us. We can each have a giver’s heart and create unending giving cycles because we know God—the Giver of all good things—never gets tired o providing abundantly.”

In 2021, a multination effort led to the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope—deployed nearly a million miles from Earth to better investigate the universe. This marvel will peer into deep space and examine the stars and other celestial wonders.
This is indeed a fascinating astronomical piece of technology, and if everything works, it will provide us with amazing photos and information. But its mission isn’t new. In fact, the prophet Isaiah described searching the stars when he said, “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one” (Isaiah 40:26). “Night after night” they speak of our Creator who hurled this imperceptibly immense universe into existence (Psalm 19:2)—and with it the countless luminous bodies that silently grace our night sky (v. 3).
And it’s God Himself who decided how many of the shining objects there are: “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name” (Psalm 147:4). When mankind sends complicated, fascinating probes to explore the universe, we can enjoy with spellbound wonder the discoveries they make, because each observation points back to the One who made the solar system and everything beyond it. Yes, the “heavens declare the glory of God” (19:1)—stars and all.

The Promise of Christ’s Birth
You, Bethlehem Ephrathah, . . . out of you will come . . . one who will be ruler over Israel. Micah 5:2
READ Luke 2:1–7
LISTEN ONLINE
In November 1962, physicist John W. Mauchly said, “There is no reason to suppose the average boy or girl cannot be master of a personal computer.” Mauchly’s prediction seemed remarkable at the time, but it proved astonishingly accurate. Today, using a computer or handheld device is one of the earliest skills a child learns.
While Mauchly’s prediction has come true, so too have much more important promises—those made in Scripture about the coming of Christ. For example, Micah 5:2 declared, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” God sent Jesus, who arrived in tiny Bethlehem—marking him as from the royal line of David (see Luke 2:4–7).
The same Bible that accurately prophesied the first coming of Jesus also promises His return (Acts 1:11). Jesus promised His first followers that He would come back for them (John 14:1–4).
This Christmas, as we ponder the accurately promised facts surrounding the birth of Jesus, may we also consider His promised return, and allow Him to prepare us for that majestic moment when we see Him face to face!
By Bill Crowder
REFLECT & PRAY
How might you respond in worship to the truth of the prophecies of Christ’s birth? How does His promise to return for us impact your decision-making?
Loving Father, I’m so grateful for the birth of Jesus and His mission of rescue and redemption. Thank You for His certain return for me.
SCRIPTURE INSIGHT
Jesus’ birth recorded in Luke 2:1-7 was prophesied in Micah 5:2. Along with this prophecy, the Old Testament contains many other prophecies about His birth and life. In Isaiah 7:14, we read, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Moreover, Christ would “proclaim good news to the poor” (61:1) and bring miraculous healing ( 35:5-6; 42:7-9). Also in Isaiah, we read about Jesus’ suffering and purpose: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (53:5). Zechariah prophesied the events of Palm Sunday, that the “king” (Jesus) would come “lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). And, again in Zechariah, Judas’ betrayal is foretold ( 11:12-13). Finally, Christ’s kingdom will be everlasting (2 Samuel 7:12-13; Psalm 89:29; Isaiah 9:7).

God's Supernatural Power
Tumblr media
💜 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”
Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. ~Exodus 14:13-22 ✝️
We've been exploring how Exodus reveals God's nature through history. Knowing God's character is vital because it unlocks the confidence we need to trust Him, in whatever it is that we are going through.
The Red Sea's parting is a spectacular reminder of God's supremacy over nature. Creation bows to Him and there is nothing He cannot do. Anything is possible with God.
Sometimes life gets tough, and you don't know where to turn. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Troubles threaten from every angle. I'm sure we can all relate one way or another, but take heart. This is exactly where the fleeing Israelites found themselves. With an army chasing them on one side and an impassable sea on the other, they were trapped! Captivity was inevitable. Defeat was crashing down on them. They surely felt like giving up completely.
But then God intervened! He tells Moses to tell the Israelites to move on (verse 15). There didn't seem to be anywhere for them to go l, but Moses raised his staff and parted the seas.
What was impossible suddenly became possible. Certain defeat became victory. Captivity became freedom. When God steps in, these turnarounds become our reality too. It's never over when God is with you. His power is sufficient for you. 💜
Our God saves His people and rescues them from their enemies. In Christ, we are His. 🙂 His power can transform anything and everything! From minor concerns to monumental problems. Nothing stands in His way. If God is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?
At its deepest level, the passing through the Red Sea symbolizes our identification with Jesus' death and resurrection. Just as the Israelites passed through the waters of the Red Sea into salvation from the Egyptians, so do us believers pass through the waters of baptism to represent into salvation from spiritual captivity.
As God's amazing supernatural power saved His ancient people, He too can rescue you today.
