Izzy didn't want Blackbeard back, he wanted his Ed back, but he didn't know how to ask for that, so he asked for the closest thing. He loved Blackbeard, and when he saw that someone (who was so different from them, so anti-pirate, so undamaged) managed to make him fall in love with him, Izzy went crazy. Because that meant that everything he suffered wasn't necessary to be with Ed. He saw how Stede had what he always wanted without having to go through all the shit he went through, without having to put up with Ed's bad times. It's so sad because Izzy never understood that Ed was sick of the pirate life and that Izzy was a constant reminder of that.

Izzy wanted to go back to how everything was before because at that time that was where he was closest to Ed, and Ed wanted to get out of that life and be with someone who saw him for more than just Blackbeard.

At the end "a ship could never really love an anchor"
