Story: To Change One Thing

Author: fringeperson

Website: FF.Net

Word Count: 12,405

Status: Complete

Rating: K+ (9+)

Tumblr: @thefringeperson

Author Summary: Haruhi never got drawn into the music room, never broke the vase, never owed a debt. She was, however, shown to the gym by Mori so that she could study in relative peace. That’s really got to change a few things. Oneshot. Complete. Do Not Own. MxH

Relationship:Mori x Haruhi

Applicable Tags: Friendship/Romance, Fluff, Friends-Dating?

Review (Contains Spoilers):

In this AU, the vase is not broken, her identity as a female is revealed farther along in the story (instead of the first host club interaction), and she becomes close friends with Mori and Honey. It is a cute and sweet refreshing story suitable for all ages.

Things That I Loved:

A slightly more vocal Mori. Ya boy has a lot of lines of dialogue in this story. The story contains his usual grunts but he also is given the opportunity to voice his opinion on certain matters. This makes him seem more like a normal person and less like a high functioning robot in a human body. We see him blush a little and flex his protective muscle. Also, Haruhi vacationed with him and Honey for like 3 weeks. Can you imagine the kind of conversations they had while on vacation?? It’s no wonder the girl was starting to become smitten with talk, dark, and handsome near the end of the story.

Things I Didn’t Care For:

I am a stickler for formatting. Just because someone classifies it as a one shot does not limit the story to one chapter (IMO). This story could have done well just to split it up into two chapters. But an honest question, what qualifies as a one-shot in your opinion?

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

“Haru-chan will never go topless,” the loli-shota insisted.

Would I Read Again?

I am not usually one to read something that is just fluff/friendship but I could see myself going back at least one more time to read through this story as a palate cleanser. Sometimes I get in a rut of only reading angst or really dark and twisty fics but this is a nice ray of friendship sunshine!

Recs Here! Um COVID-19 got my days all sorta of messed up….sorry for the late posting. Honestly, what day is it even at this point?

Story: Father Haruhi

Author: beancounter22765

Website: AO3 and FF.Net

Word Count: 56,625

Status: Complete

Rating: General

Author Summary: Now a successful lawyer, Haruhi Fujioka is being targeted with a lawsuit by someone she won a high profile case against. Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine she would be sued for this!

Relationship: N/A

Applicable Tags: Mistaken Gender, Lawyer Haruhi, Aged up characters, Found Family

Review (Contains Spoilers):

Haruhi now works at the same law firm that her late mother used to work at and has impressed many was brought on quickly after her graduation. Now 5 years have passed and she successfully closed a major case with many high-ranking families. All people involved in the case walked away satisfied except for one family, the Yamamoto family. In typical Haruhi fashion she still dresses on the masculine side especially with the perceptions of those who enter the courtroom against her. After one incident she decided that she would continue to dress more masculine so that her gender would not become a point of argument from the other side.

Over dinner and the next week Haruhi begins being served with paternity lawsuits. The first lawsuit claiming that Haruhi had gotten a girl pregnant during high school and she now has a 10 year old son because of this and has hid and denying responsibility for the child.

As tension rises within the law firm between the shareholders, Haruhi is brought in to meet with them to discuss the next course of action and their concerns over the multiple paternity lawsuits served on her. As the case starts, Haruhi basically forces the point of getting everyone tested to prove her ‘paternal relationships’ with each mother and child.

As the story progresses a more dastardly plot begins to unravel. But not before we get a classic Ouran ball with Takashi and Kyoya fight over who gets to do what with Haruhi. Though there is no main relationship listed it is fun to see her between two dominant male characters. But there is definitely a clear front runner. I’ll let you figure out who that is as you continue to read the story!

Also Haruhi is daddy at the end.

Things That I Loved:

I loved that even though this story is not relationship based we still see glimpses on love interests for Haruhi. They are sweet and cute and playful. And her friends are still as protective as always.

Each host has their own assigned ringtones on Haruhi’s phone. It’s a super fun touch!

I also enjoyed that Haruhi pushes for the things that she is passionate about. It doesn’t really matter what the challenge is she takes charge and does whatever she can to better the situation. In the end she gets a son and they are both smitten with each other.

Things I Didn’t Care For:

I should really relabel this section “Things I Wanted More of.” I wanted just a little snapshot of Kyoya’s birthday gala and some more intimate interactions with Haruhi. I feel this would have given the story a little bit more emphasis on Haruhi acts with others when she is dressed more feminine. Also, I know you don’t have to include much details on what people are wearing but the author makes sure when she is dressed more gender neutral there is emphasis. As a reader I would have liked a bit more attention brought to her womanly curves.

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

“Who notices the bush when there is such a lovely rose?”- Kyoya

Haruhi stood up and kissed him gently on the cheek.  “I think a cup of tea would be nice while we look over the DNA reports.  Maybe after that, I’ll let you examine my undergarments.”

Kyoya nearly gave himself whiplash as he turned to look at her in shock.

Would I Read Again?

Yes! It is such a fun idea and something I would have never thought of. An original concept and well executed! I loved how the author used canon experiences within the story to their advantage on really pushing the mistaken identity.

Story: Messages to you, my dear Hikaru

Author: UltimateMalfunction

Website: FF.Net

Word Count: 2,204

Status: Complete

Rating: T (13+)

Author Summary: It’s been five years since the night they lost it all, and Haruhi still needed closure. Five years since Hikaru had passed away unexpectedly. In the past, writing little letters to her late mother and then placing them around her shrine and grave had sufficed. But with this pain, would it even help ease her? Well, what’s there to lose? It never hurt to try, now did it? [One-Shot]

Relationship: Hikaru x Haruhi

Applicable Tags: Angst/Family, Major Character Death

Review (Contain Spoilers):

Haruhi is still grieving the loss of her husband Hikaru and something she does to ease her mind is writing letters to him.

Things That I Loved:

I loved that this had elements of both suffering and fluff. I also enjoyed that the author also handled well the fact that grief is not a linear process but something that comes in waves. It is implied that after everything she is still not ok with her life without him. She is surviving but far from thriving. And that is the most human part about this whole story.

Things I Wanted More Of:

I think I wanted more of her emotional struggle while she was writing the letter. Like if she is really pouring her heart out for him and the hurt is still very real I would want tears on the paper.

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

She knew that it wasn’t ever going to happen, but she could at least try. In a way, it made her feel better. Like he was still there, just gone for a little.

Would I Read Again?

Yes, if I was in the mood for a little sadness in my life, Though it does get sweet in the end so it is worth the struggle to get to the ending.

Review (Contains Spoilers):

Haruhi afraid of storm trope that leads to so really cute fluff between her and Kyoya!

Things That I Loved:

There is art! And it’s so good and wonderful. But also soft side Kyoya is equally as wonderful.

Art by @asobanana

Things I Didn’t Care For:

It was not long enough! I could have read 50k of that trope or at least like 3k more.

There was a flicker of a smile on his face before he began to move himself out from underneath the table.

Would I Read Again?

Yes! If I am looking for some sweet KyoHaru fluff this will be a new favorite go to for me. It was cute and sweet and everything you could want from this pairing. I am a sucker for a revealed soft side from Kyoya.

How about Pretty by Ko-writes (AO3)? She has a sequel (Sickly), but only one chapter is out atm

Story: Pretty

Author: Ko-drabbles

Website: AO3

Tumblr: @ko-fanatic

Word Count: 9,274

Status: Complete

Rating: Mature (13+) The content contains adult themes (sex, violence, etc) that aren’t as graphic as explicit-rated content.

Author Summary: Because these things come to a head, eventually. You can only hurt yourself for so long before something breaks - but a phoenix rises from the ashes, right?

… Right?

Relationship: Kyoya x Kaoru

Applicable Tags: Anorexia, Eating Disorders, Illnesses, Vomiting, Weight Issues, emaciation, Depression, Anxiety, Anxiety Attacks, Crossdressing, Implied/Referenced Self-Harm, Fainting, Jealousy, envy - Freeform

Review (Contains Spoilers):

We walk through the perspective of each host and their opinions on what Kyoya is struggling with. Each host is obviously concerned but they just don’t know how to help.

Things That I Loved:

I love the poetic-ness and flow of each chapter. It’s easy on the eyes. Each sentence seems to flow easily to the next. It was so well done that it was over before I knew it.

Things I Didn’t Care For:

I think it would be easy for any casual reader to say that the content would be something that they didn’t care for but hear me out. I really didn’t mind the sensitive topics explored in this content. I think the author did a good job of taking care to describe Kyoya’s struggles from the perspective of his friends. So looking past the content there really wasn’t anything that I disliked from this fic.

Favorite Lines or Quotes From Story:

Kyoya liked people to be happy, he just didn’t like showing off those virtues, choosing the guise of a money-grubbing asshole.

Would I Read Again?

If I was in a dark and twisty mood, yes. Casually scrolling through bookmarks, probably not. It is a little hard on the soul to only read dark and twisty. If you need a fluff cleanser this will definitely do that. This will make you second guess about the mental states of your friends. It takes a special kind of person to write this kind of content. I applaud the author for putting this kind of content into this fandom.
