Our Lady of Pontmain (Our Lady of Hope)

Patronage: Pontmain, France and Hope

In 1871, France was being devastated by the Franco-Prussian war. The Prussians were close to the town of Laval when on the evening of January 17, Eugene Barbedette and his brother Joseph saw an apparition of our Lady. A crowd gathered but only children could see the apparition, not adults. After the town gathered praying and singing, she told them that “God heard their prayers and fears and would answer their needs.” That same day, the Prussians halted their advances when their commander encountered an “invisible Madonna barring the way.” In May that same year, a peace treaty was signed. The local Bishop approved the apparition in 1872 and in 1908 the church was dedicated as a Basilica to Our Lady of Hope of Pontmain.

Did you know that the original icon of Our Lady of Kazan was brought to Russia from Constantinople? It happened in the 13th century, and in the 15th century, when the Khanate of Kazan was established, the image of the Virgin Mary with Jesus disappeared for more than a hundred years. It is also believed that the original piece was stolen and possibly destroyed in 1904. The thieves of the holy icon declared that it was cut to pieces and burnt, as what they coveted was actually the icon’s gold frame.

Our Lady of Banneux 

(Our Lady of the Poor)

Feast Day: January 15th

From January 15 to March 2, 1933, in Banneux, Belgium, the Virgin Mary appeared 8 times to 11-year-old Mariette Beco, in a garden behind the Beco family's cottage. Calling herself the "Virgin of the Poor," Mary promised to intercede for the poor, the sick, and the suffering. Almost immediately, miracles occurred. In 1947 Bishop Kerkhofs of the Diocese of Liège approved the Marian apparition.

“I am the Mother of the Saviour, Mother of God. Pray a lot.”

Our Lady of Kazan is by far the most famous and widespread image of the Theotokos in Russian iconography. The legend goes that the icon was found in the ruins of the city of Kazan in 1579. Since then, many copies of the image have been made. In the past, they were believed to contain divine power and hence were carried into battles to help an army win. In the featured picture, you can see a 19th-century replica of the icon, which stands out with its darker tones.
