Hi, shikatema lovers here! ☺️
So I've been in my feeling lately and want to reminisce the feeling of all the good shikatema stories. Do you have any recommendation of shikatema's ff that is a lil bit angsty? Or any great shikatema stories that I really need to read for my mental health?
Thank you and I love your stories too!
Hi there!!!!!!!
This is all based on my history from AO3 and over 10 years of having a FF dot net account so some of these may not be to your taste, and some of them I read a long time ago, but what I can promise is they’re memorable. Blanket recommendations are very up-to-date and can definitely vouch for!
Some of this may be incomplete so please keep an eye out before you read if you’re only looking to read completed work!
Yeongi’s faves:
Truth or Dare (Astroboy) by ChlorineObsession
coffee shop soundtrack by viiisenya - “Goddamn it, Chouji, I thought the second-coming of Hagaromo walked in,” Shikamaru groaned, exasperated. (HILARIOUS)
The Levels On Which We Lie by pearlsong
Between Then and Now by Snooparty - such a fun concept!
The Theory of Effort & Will by SimpArmy

CHESS - “Chess?” she muttered. “You come to a psychiatrists office and you want to play chess?” - made me chuckle
9/10 - Only one chapter but my god, what a chapter, and I’m not spoiling a single line of it!
Majsasaurus - @unioncolours
My faves:
Trial of the Heart - I wasn’t strong enough to finish this one yet, I still have it open on a tab.

My faves:
Of Sand and Shadow - “Those disgustingly arrogant eyes,(...) He had never hated anything more than those eyes.” - YOU CAN’T MISS THIS
The Ruins of Us - This one is the entire reason Asuma has a bookshop in Setting Sun. Originally he was going to have an antiques shop or a stationery shop.
Clumsydragon28 - @clumsydragon28
My fave:
The Meeting Place - I had never read poetry in the context of fanfiction before but I really think this was the perfect intro!
Sunaprincess7 - @sunaprincess7 - I’ve loved their stuff for more than a decade
My faves:
Anthem for a Doomed Youth - no words.
She dances for me - one of my all time favorites! I re-read it regularly. Inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha (which is a great story, but has some controversy, which I recommend reading up on. I suggest reading “Geisha of Gion” by Mineko Iwasaki)
The Woman - "To Shikamaru Nara she is always 'The' Woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex."
I’d love some recommendations myself so if you feel I’m missing some let me know!! And thank you for your kind words about my stories!

i wish to know... about your zimverse ocs... they seem pretty neat...
anon u GOT IT i’ve been wanting to talk abt the gang for so long!!!!! when i saw this ask i lost my marbles!!! knowin that someone is actually interested in these guys makes me so happy!!! so!! here they are!!!  also!! apologies that it took me so long to actually answer, i wanted to be able to say all of the lore for lizzie (who hadn’t had her chara arc in rp at the time) and by the time i got her arc done i ran flat outta spoons nbfkgb,, but i got my spoons back and whipped up a few lil pictures to go with this so hopefully that makes up for it!!! oki here we go!! under a cut because talking about five separate charas is gonna get long ndfjkv
ZAPPELINE VOLTAIRE
Tumblr media
she/he/they | genderfluid | somewhere between 25-37 y/o zap is basically my main character! she used to be a scientist who worked on interdimensional research, more specifically what the theoretical effects of interdimensional travel/portals would be on the human body and the safety of all of that. at one point the lab she worked at lost funding, but she decided to fuck around there before it got demolished because why not! she did a few experiments on herself, including changing her natural hair color and making it so that she could see an extra color. the latter of which did not work out entirely as planned, because the rods in her eyes didn’t grow in quite right. so! now she has red-green colorblindness in her right eye, and something similar to tritanomaly in her left, which is why she wears those funky glasses!
gonna be honest, i’m still working on a way to properly explain the next bit without it getting super boring or incomprehensible, but tdlr the new colors corresponds to a wavelengths that interdimensional rifts emit, so now she can see interdimensional rifts! she noodles out a way to build an interdimensional portal using some leftover notes from one of her co-workers, and jumps through! she ended up getting too excited about the portal and forgets to make sure it’s stable, and it ends up collapsing the second she gets through. so now she’s stuck in the multiverse! fun! after a bit of dimension-hopping, mad science, and the entire plot of polychrome (a game concept im workin on!!), she lands herself in zimcon!
SPARKPLUG VOLTAIRE
Tumblr media
he/they | nonbinary | 5 y/o
sparkplug was originally built by zap to be her impulse control! this did not work! for context, zap used to be a really shitty supervillain before zimcon, so i kinda made sparkplug to be her sidekick/henchman? but in the way that’s like, supervillain is really nice and respectful to their “underlings” and basically treats them as equals and as friends, because i love that trope so fucking much. the original joke was “haha the supervillain has pack-bonded with the box!” but then the box turned into a kid and well! here we are. eventually after just. existing for a while they developed their own personality, and pretty much just became a regular kid! they arrived at zimcon as a box, but later on they end up asking zap for an astroboy-style body! as of writing this they haven’t gotten it yet, but that’s just because the rp’s kinda on pause right now. i do wanna say tho i have a special lil bit of art for it ready that hopefully yall will enjoy!!
ELIZABETH VOLTAIRE
Tumblr media
she/her | cis (ew) | 4 years younger than zap
god just. i hate elizabeth! i really do. she’s another version of zap who is basically just an evil boomer who can’t even be fun or dramatic about it. in polychrome, she takes over as the big bad of the game. i feel like she works a lot better in polychrome just because that’s what she was made for, tbh. she and zap used to work together at one point, but due to a lot of arguing, many disagreements and some other Events(tm), started hating each other. she’s literally no fun at all and i can’t really expand upon her all that much without going into spoilers territory so that’s about it for her.
LIZZIE VOLTAIRE
Tumblr media
she/they | trans gal | 745-748 y/o
lizzie is a ghost! she’s an alternate version of zap that died before she could ever leave her home dimension. after she died, she was quite literally chained to her death spot for over 700 years. when she died though, she was given a contract that said she could be freed if she got someone to sign it, the person signing it would be able to have her do whatever they want, but once she finished the task she could be free. if the person signing felt that she wasn’t doing a good enough job, they could rip up the contract and she’d be sent back to her death spot. it sounds bad, but it was all she had so she tried her best to get someone to sign! unfortunately though, in the few months where there were still people around, she hadn’t been able to figure out how to get herself to be visible again. just before she figured that out, the world underwent some kind of apocalypse, and all the people were wiped out. so she had no choice but to just kinda sit there and vibe for 700 years.
that is until elizabeth came along! liz signs her contract, and lizzie starts working as a henchman for her. the elizabeth arc happens (which is basically elizabeth helps lizzie possess zap and tells her to erase the con members’ memories, she does this, people are pissed, lizzie gets knocked out of zap’s body, zap dies, comes back, and beats the shit out of elizabeth and later sacrifices her to a crab) and liz decides to send her back for not doing a good enough job. so she goes back to her death spot, and after a night’s stay makes a deal with an eldritch blonde twink to gain her freedom.
REGINALD SPECTER
Tumblr media
he/him | agender | a few thousand years probably (boomer)
bastard!! bastard man!! reggie is the one responsible for lizzie’s (and a few other peoples’) death(s). he has a job in the underworld which is basically just “take care of this huge monster that eats parts of people’s identity.” he found that feeding it souls worked best, so instead of finding lost souls he just decided it’d be easier to get some new ones. in order to kill people without getting caught, he disguises all his murders as accidents. lizzie’s happened to be a falling stage light that hit her on the head real hard. it’s not a cool or fun death and it makes her real mad ndjvkdf
lizzie was left there for so long because reggie pretty much just forgot about her. he left her the contract to give her some form of hope, which would keep her from fading away completely, but she was chained there so he could come back when he remembered. when liz signed her contract he got some sort of notice about it, and decided to come back to lizzie later for some shits and giggles. when they met up, he told her if she could find a soul to trade he’d give her her freedom. she accepts, and picks zap to trade, hoping that getting rid of her would help her earn liz’s approval (it didn’t). zap gets sent to this weird hell maze, and when a few others get in the way they get sent there too. lizzie eventually gets talked down from sending more and more people to the hell maze, and she lets them out. she’s tired of hurting people, and wants to give helping others a try! at the moment, reggie isn’t aware that lizzie let them out of the maze (and thus, isn’t gonna give him a soul to trade). if he finds out it’ll be bad, but for now she’s just vibing and trying her best to be nice!
reggie’s very much inspired by hate and dial from tpoh, and a lot of lizzie’s story is inspired by my personal theories on blondie/rgb’s death!! its basically “how many tpoh references can i cram into this: the arc.” it’s unbelievable the amount of shit i was allowed to get away with with nobody calling me out nfjdkvsf
aaaand that’s kinda it!!! i tried my best to make this short and readable, i wrote up something else earlier that was a LOT longer and im much more happy with this version. and if something i said doesn’t make sense or anyone wants to ask anything about these guys or polychrome id be more than happy to answer!!!! thank you so much for reading!!!! <3!!

My favorite thing about Tezuka's works is that with his star system almost every story is kinda like a crossover. So many ideas of different interactions with different characters. The possibilities are endless.
You want tobio/atom and tenma to have a stable relationship, even if it's just one panel? Okay!
Hyakkimaru becomes a doctor? Heck yeah!
Is Rock a good guy or a bad guy? Why not BOTH!
Atlas, you know that robot kid from astroboy? Is a man fighting in a revolution. He's beautiful and I love it.
Cameos. CAMEOS EVERYWHERE. (Sometimes it's like playing Where's Waldo)
Any shippers out there? Afraid of your ship being too obscure? Welp! Matchmakers, here you are! Go crazy! Although I guess there are still some exceptions depending on context. But hey that's not my business...

5 Reasons Why Drawing Anime is Bad for You
Anime is a popular genre of animation that originated in Japan but has become popular all across the world, especially in the United States. Naturally, since anime shows have many fans, it has resulted in many people attempting to replicate it in their own art.
However, as people find when they go to art school or pursue the path of becoming serious artists, they are often discouraged from drawing anime and from using it as their primary style. Why is this? Why do many people consider drawing anime to be bad for aspiring artists?
In this article, we will examine the top 5 reasons why drawing anime is considered to be bad for artists, as well as what anime is, where it originated, and other important factors to consider is you’re an aspiring artist who loves anime.
Disclaimer
The purpose of this article is not to discourage you from following your passion. It is also not to discourage the reader from watching anime, drawing anime, or doing anything else that pertains to their love of anime.
However, it is simply meant to inform aspiring artists why many people perceive drawing anime to be a bad way for them to get started in their careers.
What is Anime?
Before we get into any details about why anime may be bad for artists, let’s discuss what anime even is. Translated from Japanese to mean “animation,” anime is simply any type of animation that has been drawn by hand or by using computer software.
However, outside of Japan, the term is often used to describe a form of animation that has been specific to Japan. It was first created by Osamu Tezuka in the series Astroboy, and his work continues to remain popular even today.
The style that is now commonly associated with anime skyrocketed after this and he was the first to establish the characteristics of anime characters. This animation is unique due to its colorful scenes and fantasy storylines.
One of the key features of anime is the unrealistically large eyes that the characters have. The hair of characters in anime seems to be rather lively and colorful.
These shows have grown widely popular across the world, most particularly in the West and in the United States.
While the style of anime is typical no matter what show you enjoy watching, it is possible to come across many different genres, including action films, science fiction, comedy, romantic drama, and more. Anime is a wide range of animation in a particular style.
The love of these shows has created anime conventions where people gather to recreate some of their favorite anime scenes through cosplay.
As a result of the love of anime, several Japanese terms have entered the Western colloquial vocabulary, including otaku (a lover of anime or manga), weeaboo (someone who loves the Japanese culture), and senpai (master or senior, depending on the context used).
This has become a billion-dollar industry that has garnered the love of youth across the world.
Another thing to mention is that anime is not only for children, although that is the audience it has traditionally been geared towards. There are plenty of adults who are interested in anime and, as a result, anime is a genre that can be accepted by people of any age.

Anime as an Interest
So, anime is a highly-popular genre among many young people. It’s not difficult to find young people across the world recreating some of their favorite anime shows- or coming up with their own- on the Internet.
Tumblr and DeviantArt have become two of the most popular sites on the web for lovers of anime to showcase their passion. There are plenty of young people who enjoy getting into art because of their passion for anime. But there are some issues that come along with this.
Is anime considered an art?
This is a complex question. The definition of art is any human activity that results in the creation of work through visuals, audio, or performance. It is meant to express the imaginative side of an artist’s mind.
There are many different ways in which one can create art, which most commonly include drawing, painting, writing, photographing, architecture, fashion design, and dancing.
This leads many people to argue that anime is indeed a form of art as it allows individuals to express themselves and create something that they love and feel passionate about.
However, one thing that many anime fans come across when they take art lessons is that art teachers often discourage their students from drawing anime. This might seem to some like their art teachers are unwilling to understand them or that they are being discriminatory.
There are, of course, many people who are skilled in the style and who have produced some beautiful work. But art teachers have plenty of valid reasons for not allowing new art students to draw anime. We will get into the top reasons why anime is bad for artists in the next section.
Top Reasons Why It’s Bad for Artists
Once again, as we emphasized before, drawing anime in and of itself is not a bad thing. If you love anime, there is nothing that should stop you from pursuing your passion.
However, if the only thing you’re drawing is anime, this could hinder your abilities as an artist. Here are the top five reasons why many art experts believe that drawing anime is bad for you.
1. Anime does not allow you to explore other styles of art.
For one, anime is a very specific style of art. It is not like any other type of art, and you most likely won’t be able to combine it with a different style of art. Even if you aren’t the biggest anime fanatic, you can automatically create an image in your mind of what anime is.
Since it is so specific, anime greatly limits your ability to explore other styles and genres, especially nature, more realistic humans, and other objects.
You may end up getting stuck in a sort of artistic rut if you choose to only draw anime; there is only so much that you will be able to draw if you choose to use this style.
Or, for example, when you take an art class, your teacher will want you to learn about art from different countries as well as different time periods in history.
You may come across anime when you learn about Asia and Japan, but it’s not the only form of art out there and it isn’t the only one that you will be focusing on.
Being able to understand the different forms of art and how history impacted art will help you to become more knowledgeable in the field.
If you begin by drawing using other styles and then move on to anime, it will be a lot easier to come up with unique ideas and be creative in your work.
2. You won’t be able to learn the basics of art.
This is an important factor that needs to be considered. When you’re just getting started as an artist, there are many things that you have to study and learn in the beginning. For one, you need to learn how to shade, the basics of human anatomy, and other realistic drawings.
Art teachers want to teach you perspective, color theory, and more. You may find in your art classes that you’ll be working with materials that are completely foreign to you and that you might never end up working with again.
However, they will help to enhance your skills and knowledge as a budding artist. Anime will not be able to teach you that.
For example, take a regular human face. Human faces have many shadows and contours.
When you’re just learning how to draw, your teacher will show you how to draw cheekbones, the hollows of cheeks, eyes, noses, and other facial features so that you will be able to construct a three-dimensional figure. However, if you look at an anime face, it’s rather simplistic.
Anime figures do not have all these shapes and contours and, of course, their faces don’t look like normal human faces. Another example would be trees or other forms of nature. If you are a lover of anime, you know that one of the general themes of these shows is a fantasy world.
These worlds are fairly unrealistic. While there is nothing wrong with drawing fantasy or things that are out of the ordinary, it’s not necessarily the best building block to start on if you’re just getting into drawing.
It is important that you are able to draw the basics before you move on to fantasy or other unrealistic areas.
Often, art teachers will encourage their students to learn how to build and then deconstruct.
This means that you will be taught- or you are encouraged to teach yourself- how to draw key realistic things, such as people, nature, cars, and other objects that you are likely to see in your daily life. Then, you can move onto other genres such as anime.
So, by solely focusing on drawing anime, you will be greatly lacking in your ability to produce different types of art and some of the key styles that are necessary in order to enhance your skills.
Starting with the basics and then branching out into anime will be better for you as an aspiring artist.
3. You won’t develop your own artistic style.
This is a fear that many art teachers have and perhaps one of the main reasons why art teachers do not allow their students to draw anime. Once again, anime is a very specific style. You most likely will have to watch some popular anime shows and draw in accordance with those.
That means that you are replicating another artist’s style and not developing your own.
Art teachers have seen anime and they know what anime consists of. They know that, when someone draws anime, they will need to include the huge eyes, colorful hair, and other features that are associated with anime movies.
This is especially true if you’re a middle school or high school student; it’s likely that many other students in your class or in your teacher’s other classes also like to draw anime.
As you progress in your art classes, your teacher will have difficulty seeing how you have developed as an artist because you will be focusing on a style that has already been done many times and that you are simply copying from.
In addition to that, it might not seem like what you’re drawing is unique and something that you’re particularly passionate about, or something that comes from the heart.
More often than not, students choose to focus on anime as their main style of art because it’s popular, not because they have been inspired by the different concepts.
Also, it is important to be able to tell the difference between who created what drawing, even if you’re drawing in the same genre as someone else. Anime does not provide that opportunity.
Yes, you can still add some of your unique effects to your work in anime. But even if you examine the different anime films, you will find it difficult to tell the difference between many forms of art.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it further enhances the notion that anime does not allow you to develop your unique style.
Art teachers want their students to be able to create something that is unique. If you’re a budding artist, chances are that what you’re creating from anime is something that you have already seen before and nothing that is special to you.
4. You need to be able to learn anatomy as an artist.
Bouncing off of number 2, in order to become a good artist, you need to learn how to draw anatomy. Most art teachers encourage their students to start by drawing things from life, especially humans.
When you examine the intricacies of your hair, your hands, and the shape of a human body, you will see that anime simply does not allow you to truly replicate those in your work.
Anime will make your work rather simple because this form of animation will not allow you to truly grasp these concepts. The work produced in anime does not quite examine the differences in the human body and the uniqueness that every person has.
Going off of 3, you need to be able to develop your own style as you learn how to draw anatomy.
It’s typically not from the memory that people draw things like hair and faces, but they are drawn based on a style that you are accustomed to. And once again, anime keeps things simple and will not allow you to grow in your style.
5. Anime can be replicated very easily.
Again, anime is not a unique form of art. What you’re drawing is something that has been replicated from another individual’s work. Since anime is so easy to replicate, it won’t allow you to enhance your skills as an artist in a way that will help you to grow and become better.
You and your fellow art friends will all, essentially, copy each other’s work, which will show that you haven’t developed your own specific tastes and it will be very hard to see how you have been developing in your training.
It is easy to print a scene from one of your favorite animes and simply copy that. But will that enhance your skills as an artist? No, it will only allow you to become better at copying work.
When you examine the different shows produced by different anime artists, you will be able to see that there are many similarities, even if the artists and the shows have nothing to do with one another.
If you’re just copying someone else’s work, then it’s not likely that you will be learning anything about techniques or proportions.
Conclusion
Once again, there are many people who love anime and who are genuinely passionate about it. Popular shows such as Naruto and Death Note are the favorites of many people.
If you are someone who wants to draw anime, there is nothing saying that you shouldn’t or that you should never try to draw scenes from your favorite anime shows.
However, it is important to realize that, if your goal is to become a good artist, anime will hinder your ability to enhance your skills.
Your art teachers will want you to branch out and explore other genres, which might, in turn, allow you to enhance your skills in anime.
It is important to make sure that you have grasped the important concepts of drawing, such as realism, shadows, body structure, and more, and that you have been able to develop your unique style.
Once you have moved on from the basic stage and have developed well as an artist, there is nothing wrong with moving on to simple and replicable styles such as anime.

FMP Evaluation
Quite a conventional title right?
I suppose I should start with the beginning. The idea around everything I did was just one I came up with on the bus. The problem was I didn’t deviate much off of it. I wrote a story around a person with a real-life plasma weapon arm and I did my research but the most deviation I made in the end was not showing the character with the weapon at the end and the kind of hologram I used. Mostly because of time limitations.
The idea also included development process on how the wielder of what I thought at the time to be a potentially heavy weapon was given more modifications to help carry, let alone use the weapon.
Before I had to decide on the format I was going to take this is. I always do this because I always want to either try something new or develop a skill I hadn’t before. This time I appropriately followed in the footsteps of my last FMP with animated 3D models. It failed last time because I stretched myself too thin with multiple ideas to have live action clips inter-spliced with these animated models in the real world. It came out short, only 3D animated and ugly although I did manage to throw in a computer segment that apparently caught my tutors attention more than the animation. So this time I wanted to keep it simple and keep it all in a computer simulation narrative with a log in sequence, very reminiscent of my last FMP, and models rotating and animating simply on a black background.
One more thing came to mind. Holograms, I was told during the last project how easy holograms are so I decided on using that as the presentation format.
The research I did was deeply rooted in how Plasma science actually works because I wanted an accurate model of both the outside and inside. Although my model did end up looking silly and
Sci-Fi on the outside I did make the insides actually look like a machine which I am very proud of. I think it might have been the most successful part of this entire Project because of the detail in the model!
What I would have done differently though is have more Pinterest boards. Or any. I included plenty of Harvard referencing, videos explaining the science and even forum boards and Emails discussing little elements like the recoil of a plasma weapon and the gun laws application to a prosthetic weapon as well as the recognition of a new kind of weapon but I definitely could have benefited more with even a mood board.
The designing of the weapon came a little later on the account of the research into machines that create plasma. What came first however were the character models that would wield the weapon. I tried a soldier type face, a dumb face which accurately reflects how the Americans put lost hopes into the military, as well as a child just because of the convention of giving children super powers in comics and cartoons like Astroboy. It was a distant concept for a character from the more realistic approach I was coming from so the child design isn’t exactly overly original compared to the others.
The design I evolved from was the dumb looking one. I could have gone with the soldier type but in order to have a stage-by-stage display of the development of this weapon I preferred someone more inexperienced.
I drew up some variations. Although I liked the first too much I did end up with a new design I liked better. I guess that says a lot about the development stage.
My tutors enjoyed the original and one of the variations respectively however I realised I needed a compromise between them. One was too short and the other (which was the original) just had too dumb a face. Overtime I became less accustomed to it and made a combination of the two designs to create a midway point that looked more normal. In the long-run it became incredibly helpful when designing the model. Imagine a man with legs shorter than their arms. It’s chaos and exactly what one of the original designs was like!
What I’m saying is that this is one of the better differences I made to my process on a project that came out even better than usual and something I definitely wouldn’t change.
The plasma weapon design was straight forward enough. Note down the designs of the equipment used of both a Plasma torch and the Plasma weapon in Missouri University and then design a casing for it and ammunition.
I few different designs were floating around but none but the simplistic tube, which I ended up using, were good enough. I either looking over complicated or like a bunch of random 3D shapes were thrown together excluding the Helix ammunition and the Revolver chamber designs which, although my favourite, appeared to me to be impractical.
Unfortunately there was something quite large that never made it to my blog but was mentioned in my reflective Vlog multiple times.
The New York trip.
Although we went to so many different places, I had my own spots to visit for research purposes. They were some Prosthetics centres which I hoped to get interviews with. When it came to contacting them they either dismissed me, said they were booked or didn’t bother picking up the phone. Many quarters wasted.
Even worse was I did record the whole experience in New York on my camera in video and had planned to edit all the clips together into a super video. This has proven to be quite a monumental task since I’m still half way through as I have been trying to juggle FMP work with it.
I regret nothing more on this project than not being able to include it in my work outside of merely hinting at it.
The Prosthetic research and designing got as developed as real-world examples, a Harvard reference of a Cyborg comic from DC (which I got from NYC) and two designs in total. One sketch without looking at any research (which was a terrible idea and a terrible drawing) and a finished design which were copies of real technology. This element of the project just wasn’t as important to me as the plasma weapon and, although I could have done immensely more on this designs development, they already existed as real world technology and I feel that I needn’t reinvent the wheel.
The modelling process was pretty straight forward and I either learnt new techniques or rediscovered old ones like splines. I got as far as designing the final design or the plasma weapon and the character model but I did one more for presentation purposes.
Again, this takes second to the plasma weapon part but I made a 3D logo as a sort of screensaver to animate for some context that this is all taking place in a computer simulation.
I had a stray old file of a logo I was going to use at my leisure in video games which was a decent filler for this position.
Now, the problem was animating the character. I did start with my own technique using groups to align anchor points for each hinge of the body and putting every other limb of the body into each group in the same way until the finger tip from the torso. Imagine hinges screwed onto hinges.
The problem was how complex this appeared to be. I never got a moment to animate it before my tutor introduced my to Mixamo which is an Adobe website that provides stock models, stock animation and can add skeletons to animate to any model I upload.
It was going smoothly until I wanted to add the Plasma weapon and that’s where it all fell apart.
Mixamo decided it didn’t like the new model I was giving it and that’s where animating the character model came to a grinding halt.
I got as far as an idle animation.
What was good was that I at least had the highlight of my FMP work done. The Plasma weapon animation of it rotating and then being cut in half exposing the insides.
The logo was done as well but that wasn’t as important.
Besides this I needed a story. A reason for this all to exist.
I thought of an Iron man kind of story except Tony Stark is building these weapons for the military like he used to. The next was a communist or zombie space war but that seemed to Call of Duty Black Ops to me and has been done to death.
What I decided on was just the mere implications of a weapon firing something hotter than the surface of the sun on the battlefield which, in narrative, is being offered to the military for use in the field. It did occur to me that it seems useless if you could just use bullets which are faster (I did the maths based on the Missouri devices speed of 2Ft in a tenth of a second). My excuse was terrorists with stolen military armour that’s impervious to bullets and thus melting through them seems more practical than missiles which may miss the target or sheltered enemies.
A dash of multiple industrial companies building this together to appear more realistic than one overpowered company like Stark industries and I’m done!
Personally, I think this story development wasn’t overdone or underdone and I wouldn’t change anything. I could still easily change everything else but this story.
Editing was also straight forward. Some cutting up, some added sounds and the voice-over clips I recorded with my parents were layered on top as well.
I used them nothing more but because of their adult voices.
The lines weren’t much to talk about either. My mum voiced a generic A.I. that described what was happening potentially off screen like hacking and playing videos while my dad voiced the unnamed engineer character whose just explaining the plasma weapon.
It was still vastly disappointing that I couldn’t get the character model animated but there’s little I could have done if Mixamo hates my guts.
With the digital stuff done I’m just left with the Holographic projector and everything else I would use for the presentation. To get it out of the way I have a black curtain from the drama prop shed to go around the door to the closet I’ve shotgunned and I’ve spray painted black a plinth to put everything on. My tutors hate my spray paint job and don’t want me near another can of spray paint for the rest of my mortal life.
The science of the holographic projector has technically been available to us for years. It’s just reflections. Originally I was planning of building a four sided one to make it look especially 3D. Unfortunately I both ran out of time to render different angles of the models I’d made (because of ridiculous rendering times) and that the building of the four sided projector was the most fiddly thing I’ve ever attempted to do.
First I tried wood, no, metal, no. I ended up just downgrading to a single sided hologram and then building it out of metal and wood glue which I was convinced by a friend would come out clear.
You can imagine how annoyed my tutors were when they saw the copper skeleton lathered in white glue.
One of my tutors luckily remembers how to build one and did it himself.
For the record he agrees completely with me that workshop stuff is not my strong suit and is better left with him.
A few tries later (because the tutor was busy and left specific instructions with the workshop tutors who apparently handled it poorly) and we have it!
A test and a coat of black (non-spray) paint later and I’m pretty much done.
Originally I had a much, much more complicated design for the projector since I understood that tailoring it to work with the college computers meant I couldn’t use it at home with anything else but in order to get anything done at all I dismissed my overcomplicated yet versatile idea.
The conclusion was… surprisingly better than I thought. I cut back a lot more than expected since I assumed I wasn’t overworking myself because I planned so little models and designs compared to my FMP in 2017 but I’m happy that I got something done. Frankly I think this takes a joint second with my previous favourite work which was a minute and a half long chalk board animation.
If I could have done anything differently it would of course be what I planned to do. I think I’m done with animating in 3D unless I’m keeping it simple. Next time I do any animating I want to keep it 2D and drawn by hand.
Holograms were fun too and I’ll probably end up using the projector I now have again in the future. Probably as a regular computer screen.
