This past week my dad suffered a seizure and spent several days in the hospital, and the cause was a sudden drop in blood pressure. Incidentally my mom also suffered with low BP which it was later revealed were the side effects of aggressive chemo she had undertaken many years before for lymphoma. She had passed away back in summer of last year and now Dad ( who himself had gone through chemo for gastric cancer in the past and currently battling prostate cancer which unfortunately has spread to his bone) is starting the decline. And its really sinking in that, in due time, that me and my three siblings will be left alone on this Earth without our parents ( it’s still hard to believe that it will soon be one year that Mom has gone to heaven ). We take so many aspects of our lives for granted; we often forget about our mortality, or the fact that nothing lasts forever. I know that every parent/child relationships are different, but whatever the circumstances, we should remember that we would not at first exist without our parents. And life is short and unpredictable, so we should take every opportunity to show our love and respect to our parents and/or settle whatever loose ends that had been left between us; I've read many accounts of people who live with regrets at having not settled things with their parents before their passing and sometimes it can be debilitating. Even something as simple as "I love you" can make a big difference.

Tube loitering

One of the downsides to connecting your nests using long tubes is "ant loitering" some ants like to just hang out in the tubes because they retain a little moisture and it's near everything. This will cause the tubes to get dirty and less attractive... hence my new invention of a "mid tube fan."

Getting ants to do anything is next level. They respond to every change and not in the ways you'd predict. They are sensitive to temp, light levels and air currents in ways that aren't obvious. I just need to find a small enough fan and 3D print a little holder for it. 

I recently cleared out a tube that the cone ants blocked with sand, using ... the legs of dead crickets like rebar to reenforce the structure. They had made this whole barricade to regulate the air flow to the nest (hence I'd never recommend a fan on a nest tube)

I guess building a wall out of cricket legs (as struts) with a sand slurry like concrete... isn't any more strange than those early humans with their bone huts...

though I still find both creepy.

Today was another family game night you planned again. After begging your husband, and you promised you’d be present at this one

Because the last one went a bit astray when you were absent for a short moment.

You were all in the palace hall, sitting at the round table. It was You, Bi-Han, Tomas, Kuai, Kitana, Johnny(in place of Liu Kang who was busy), Kung Lao, Harumi, Rhonda(Your girlfriend), and Kenshin.

“I’m glad you guys came, especially my ladies.” You said cheerfully as you shuffled the cards.

Your two daughters were sitting in Bi-Han’s lap giving him long French braids. Johnny looked in amusement.

“So are you gonna get mani pedis next?” Bi-Han glared at him, the only reason he didn’t react or say anything. Because of his girls, as he held them.

“Johnny refrain yourself from provoking my husband. I said you could only come in Liu Kang’s place if you promise to do the fucking least.”

“Of course, anything for you doll.” You rolled your eyes passing out the cards. You saw Bi-Han about to say something but you interrupted him.

“I love your hair grandmaster, it suits you.” You smirked at him. He just looked away.

“Thank you for extending your invitation Grandmistress Y/N. I’m deeply honored.” Kitana thanked you.

“Of course! And I didn’t want to be the only lady, so I’m glad my girlfriends joined my family events every now and again!” You sat down next to Bi-Han.

“Friend I’m always down for a little fun, especially when there is a little cutie present.” Rhonda lend over to Tomas blowing him a kiss. He looked at your friend nervously.

“Up you go girls, adult night.” You grabbed them, they whined before kissing there parents goodnight and leaving.

“So everyone remembers the rules from earlier!” You clapped your hands together looking around, everyone nodded.

“Perfect! We will start with Harumi, then proceeds going to the right.”

Everyone looked at their hands, you smirked but hid behind your cards.

“I’ll put down a blue six.” Harumi put her card down.

Kitana put down a blue one, “UNO!” She yelled excitedly.

“Ooh girl no, you only say uno when you’re on your last card. Because if you don’t you’ll have to draw one.” You laughed.

Kitana deflated with ‘oh’ as the game continued, and it was nice and quiet.

A/N: This is where it becomes toxic lol

“I’ll be back, I’m just grabbing my blanket real quick.” You got up and ran to you and your husband’s room.

Kung Lao put down a draw 4, “draw 4 little cage, and the color is green.”

“Ha! Yeah not happening. Colors red.” Johnny put down a draw four.

“Who the hell told you niggas we we’re playing stacks?” Rhonda looked at the cards.

“Stacks?” Kenshi questioned.

You came back wrapped in a big blue warm fuzzy blanket your husband gave you on your birthday. You grabbed your cards and looked at the cards.

“I AM NOT DRAWING EIGHT FUCKING CARDS! Y’all are fuckin trippin!”

“Sis were we playing regular or stacks?”

“What are stacks, if you don’t mind me asking?” Kenshi asked.

“Stacks is where if someone put down a draw card and you have a similar one. You stack yours on top, along with the next person. Until someone doesn’t have it, they will have to draw the amount of cards that we stacked.”

“Sounds interesting! Let’s try it!” Kitana chimed.

“Are you guys sure?”

“Yeah it could be fun, and it’ll be faster to.” Tomas added.

“I agree with my man Tomas, let’s play stacks.” Rhonda lend closer, shoulders touching batting her eyelashes. Tomas tensed, face turning red

“Rhonda behave! Sooo alright… fine… stacks it is… Baby I’m sorry in advance.” You looked at Bi-Han patting his biceps.

You put down a draw four, Bi-Han looked and only smirked. He put one down, then Kenshi, Kuai, Harumi, Kitana, Tomas, Rhonda, and now it’s back to Kung Lao.

“Are you KIDDING ME! I am not pulling 40 DAMN CARDS!”

“Those are the rules broham.” You smiled.

“Screw these rules, you did this on purpose. With your shuffling!” Kung Lao looked at you.

“ME! I asked everyone are you sure you want to do stacks, AND YOU ALL AGREED! Isn’t that right babe!?” You looked at Bi-Han

“Yes.”

“Asian Jack Frost would agree with you on anything.”

“I’m warning you cage! You talk as if you know every little thing, but the only thing you know HOW to do is fail in life and PISS ME OFF!”

“You wanna go French braids!?” Johnny grinned at him angrily.

“This is why yo ass should’ve left it at regular Johnny boy.” Rhonda chimed watching the four of you all argue.

“Listen happy meal, no one asked for an extra two cents. So stay out of it.”

“What you call me NEGRO!?”

“You shouldn’t speak to a lady like that Johnny.” Tomas interjected.

“That’s right tell him babe.” Rhonda smiled.

“You know how about we just take our cards back and do normal?” Harumi tried to ease the flame.

“I don’t think that’s how this work dearest” Kuai told her.

“Yeah, Kung Lao you’re being dramatic.” Kenshi told him.

“Exactly! Just grab the damn cards, after that no more stacking. Alright, JOHNNY?”

“I think that’ll be a good idea.” Kitana added

Everyone nodded, as well as Johnny. Everyone sitting back down, Kung Lao being reluctant.

“Hurry UP!” Bi-Han barked, still a bit fiery because of Johnny.

“Relax beloved.” You tried to soothe him, rubbing his arms up and down.

Kung Lao put down a draw four, you drew four. Despite your slight grumble, but at least you weren’t Kung Lao.

Going down turns, it reached Kitana. Who put down there card, she noticed she only had one. “OH UNO UNO UNO!” Kitana jumped from excitement. You chuckled.

“Okay girl we gotchu.” Rhonda said smiling.

Tomas took his turn, then Rhonda. Now on Johnny who put down a skip card.

“Really Johnny!?”

“Yep.” Johnny smirked, looking at his cards

You drew a card, then Bi-Han pulled a blue card with arrows. “What does this card do again my love?”

“OOH! That’s a reverse card, so when you use that card it’ll skip Kenshi’s turn and reverse back to me.” You smiled at him sweetly.

He put down the card and, you cackled wickedly loud. Dropping a skip card, then Johnny and Rhonda started dying laughing.

“That’s it I’M OUT!” He dropped his cards, showing what he had remaining was numbers. Which made you laugh harder holding on to your husband so you wouldn’t fall out the chair.

It continued, till Kitana said uno and out. Which officially ended the game.

The ladies thank you for inviting them, Kitana clearly enjoyed herself and wanted to do it again at your next one, as well as Harumi as she loved seeing you and the family.

Your girlfriend Rhonda kidnap Tomas to supposedly speak to him privately. After everyone left and you cleaned up.

You were relaxing in a nice hot bath curly hair in a bun with your husband. Your back leaning against his chest, he gave you a soft kiss against your neck.

His nose rubbing against it as he inhaled your scent, “Did you enjoy yourself my darling?”

“I did! I like these kinds of things, and having chaotic fun with everyone.” You turned around wrapping your arms around him.

“Thank you for indulging in my gaming events, and taking the time out of your busy schedule to spend this day with me. My darling grandmaster.” You smiled.

“Anything for you my beloved grandmistress.”

You both shared a lovely and passionate kiss. Bi-Han deepening the kiss. As his grip around your waist tightens.

Then one of the kids knocked on the door, interrupting whatever ya’ll was doing could lead to.

You slowly broke the kiss, “Guess that’s our cue to get out.”

“Well I guess we can finish in the room. When they go back to sleep.

You definitely like that idea, and soon enough when the kids were back to sleep. Bi-Han stood on his word and continued where y’all left off in the bathroom.

General Shao (Childhood) Headcanon 

Warning: mentions of child abuse, bullying, terrible parent

Ever since General Shao’s backstory was revealed on the website I’ve believed he had a terrible (borderline hellish) childhood. 

To recap, Shao had the enthusiasm and brilliance to be a great warrior, but his body was too sickly to handle the physical training. Shao’s father did not like this and decided to design a strenuous program to build Shao’s strength. On the surface, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong but I believe Shao went through awful circumstances that made him the man he is. 

In Outworld, especially in professions that involve fighting, strength is considered the most important thing for a person. No doubt Shao’s father, a renowned Outworld general, would express these ideals and hate the reality of one of his children being considered weak. He would do anything to ensure his legacy was considered strong, which he did by ignoring Shao’s physicians and crafting a training program that could potentially worsen Shao’s condition. 

Because of his family’s reputation, Shao would be tormented by other children. Being pushed around and called worthless or a “sorry excuse to his family tree.” This would fester Shao’s anger and his drive to become stronger like his father, so he’s willing to go through the program. 

In other people’s eyes the program would be considered abusive, but Shao saw it as his father caring about him. He would excuse the days long training, survival training alone in the woods, his father’s harsh words, and not letting Shao eat or drink until he perfected his moves. 

Shao would also inherit his father’s demented beliefs in what being a warrior is and what Outworld needed. He would hear his father complain about the kingdom’s alliance with Liu Kang, hearing him call the fire god a “scoundrel” and “the bringer of Outworld’s downfall.” He’d be taught that domination is the true way to live rather than peace, compassion is considered weakness, death in battle is the greatest honor, and the only way to fight is on your terms. 

(Some of Shao’s intros inspired this headcanon, such as one of his intros with Liu Kang where he admits that he’s wanted to kill Liu Kang all his life, and an intro with Reiko where he tells him, “fight on your terms or don’t fight at all.” Also, Shao’s disgusted reaction to Raiden offering to help him to his feet after their fight inspired the part about Shao being taught that compassion is weakness.) 

Unfortunately Shao never learned that his father’s behavior was abuse since the bullying he faced stopped after being able to defend himself, instead he continues this cycle with Reiko. When it comes to his relationship with Reiko, I believe Shao cares about Reiko like a son but only learned how to express love through his father. He saw his old self in Reiko and wanted to share his feelings of strength with the young boy. He trained Reiko the same way as his father did to him and the results were the same- Reiko became a great warrior. I don’t think he’s manipulating Reiko to tame Onaga; Shao genuinely believes that his young ward is capable of doing the task, but thinks Reiko dying would be okay since his father taught him that dying in battle is an honor. Hopefully if Reiko dies taming Onaga (it’s highly possible with how powerful and rabid Onaga is), Shao lowers his guard and shows genuine care for Reiko. At least a sweet goodbye or a burial scene where we see him mourning his lost ward/son. 

I don’t think Shao would be redeemed if my headcanon turned out to be true, but I would hope that other characters would learn about his past and use it as a cautionary tale on how striving for strength is not worth losing your humanity. The possible tragedy Shao’s story could take would be interesting, especially when Liu Kang somewhat created the beginning of Shao’s life to give him the chance for redemption, yet it’s someone Liu never considered that turned Shao into the person he is.

I like to imagine most Outworlders don't speak English if we were being realistic with workdbuilding. The royal family and their advisors would probably interact with Earthrealm officials during visits but regular Outwrolders probably wouldn't.

The only reason they speak English is for our convenience but realistically most probably shouldn't and it'd be funny if the language barrier popped up at times.

Like I imagine Quan Chi didn't speak English initially so he didn't register Titan Shang was talking to him when he was doing his job in the mines. Like Titan Shang thinks Quan Chi is ignoring him...when in reality Quan Chi simply doesn't register he's talking to him at all.

That is exactly my thought - worldbuilding wise, common Outworlders shouldn’t speak English or any other Earthrealm’s dialects, as they do not have a constant contact with totally foreign cultures from Liu Kang’s realm. I don’t think we ever heard of any vital trade between Earthrealm and Outworld and the portal between realms isn’t that easily accessible for people to just snuck in, and it is not just about Outworlders being wary of Earthrealmers but also Liu Kang decided to keep existence of other realms in secret from majority of his people. So the contact is limited and let’s not forget that the same as Earthrealm, Outworld is not culturally homogeneous realm either, as there is many different cultures coexisting there, like Edenians, Shokan, Centaurians, Saurian, Osh-Tekk to name few. So learning additional Earthrealm's dialects may be more difficult to some of those people than to others.

It makes sense for the Royal Family, their palace guard (Umgadi), advisors and for some military officers like General Shao and Reiko to learn English and possibly other earthrealm dialects, as such knowledge is vital to diplomacy and state security. 

It is understandable that the games use English as common language for simplicity, however 

It really is sad how the cultural/language barriers are not exploited as it has such a great potential (the closest things are: Johnny’s references to Alien that Kung Lao misunderstand as Cage calling Tanya a slur and was both offended and confused by the whole thing and Mileena thinking that drone is some kind of magic)

I don’t like the implication in Liu Kang’s timeline that Great Britain again influenced the whole world to the point English is the commonly used language because with that implication comes the question: did some Earthrealmers again suffer under the regime of other countries, be it under colonization or losing their country's independence. I mean, it is Liu Kang’s timeline, why Royal Family don’t speak in his native language as they had the longest contact with the Fire Lord and English is not, logically thinking, Raiden’s native language either?

Let’s just agree I’m very picky about this issue and I would love all the shenanigans coming from characters speaking in different languages and sometimes failing - or on purpose making it difficult to communicate well. Or, as the Lin Kuei faction has the number of native-speakers from different cultures (China, Czech, Botswana), they could utilize other languages as their “secret dialect”. Like Lin Kuei brothers waiting for Liu Kang, instead of speaking English between themselves, they could talk in Tomas’ native language because the chance Kung Lao, Raiden or Liu Kang’s servants would understand Czech is slimmer than them understanding English. 

I’m seriously crying over the untapped language potential Mortal Kombat has for years. 

As for Titan Shang Tsung, I’m gonna trust he was smarter than using English, when Quan Chi was born in mines and spent his whole life there. The mortal Shang Tsung consuming souls for ages most likely knew and could fluently use a vast number of dialects, so I imagine Titan Shang Tsung would figure out pretty quickly that no one in mines used earthrealm language and talked to Quan Chi in a way he could perfectly understand him, especially since “Damashi” needed Quan Chi’s trust to process the great plan of his.
