Vash gritted his teeth as he backed off from Wolfwood, not missing the twinge of hurt in his expression. The distance between them was still no more than what it was before the blond had gotten... carried away... but it felt like an entire dune came between them.

He looked at the stars as though he were searching for an answer while the silence only thickened the tension. Vash made no attempt to leave Wolfwood's side even though his mind was screaming at him to.

Vash's voice cracked as he broke the sacred quiet, "It's not you," he began, his heart drooping in his chest, "You're great! It's just..."

Turning toward Wolfwood with surely the fakest, dumbest smile he could muster and dew on his eyelashes, he continued, "Well, I don't deserve 'great' things."

Nervously, Vash shuffled his feet in the sand and tensed his right hand. He wanted to be selfish, he wanted to kiss Nicholas, wanted to reach out and touch his hand, but he knew that he couldn't do that to the undertaker. He deserved so much more—he deserved peace and rest rather than Vash's constant, turbulent quest for atonement.
