#over consumption

everyone always seems to only talk about over consumerism and mass hoarding when it comes to “girl things” like purses, skincare products, and stanley cups but there should also be a discussion about how men hyper consume in unhealthy ways as well but it is more accepted in our society and goes under the radar more easily

A little more context:
I wanna see the Barbie movie, and at first I was enjoying the promo of the Barbie Fits and the set etc, however the more brand collabs that come out the more icky it makes me feel. I just know that so many of the clothes and random objects made for the promo will be thrown out once the novelty/tread ends, and it will contribute significantly to the wider problem of over consumption and capitalism in our society. Fast fashion is bad enough, and it’s worse when it’s endorsed like this like our planet is literally dying!
As an artist, I also just hate to see capitalism existing so blatantly with projects. (I get that Barbie is literally a commercial franchise and stuff, I just think it’s a great relèvent example for my feelings). I think when a project focuses so much on encouraging spending and consumption, it can impact how I view the work.
For example, I dislike a lot of Jukebox musicals because they just feel like an excuse to try and make a shit ton of money with a project of limited artistic intention/integrity, and it just becomes a spectacle of wealth and capitalism in full force. Capitalism is antithetical to the Arts, and so when a project goes all in on it- it feels yucky to me.
Want to again clarify: NO HATE TO THE BARBIE MOVIE OR PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT IT!!! I am genuinely happy for you guys, I just think it’s a timely example to express some wider opinions I hold! Please don’t take it personally!

I know this has been said before, but I'm going to say it again: wanting to have a different core aesthetic just because you saw someone else dressing that way on Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, etc. just leads to more consumption.
I've seen people who want to change their entire wardrobe just to fit into a certain aesthetic whether, that be coquette, emocore, Twilight core, and now the next big thing being the office siren aesthetic.
There is nothing wrong with liking a certain style, but the problem comes when you're going on to Shein, Temu, Amazon and even the thrift just to have your entire wardrobe imitate that aesthetic.
Doing this just leads to more overconsumption, and yes, you can overconsume at the thrift store. People do it all the time with these giant thrift hauls of Y2K Mcbling clothing or whatever because they want to fit in with the next aesthetic trend.
While I don't change my entire style to fit with an a certain aesthetic I do have an issue with overconsuming just like everybody else and this year I'm trying to work on bettering myself in that area.

I bet we would be much better off with limiting consumerism if everyone and their parents weren't trying to be influencers

I wish people could see that overconsumption is not just people buying huge shein hauls, it's also buying something new without checking if you can buy it second hand, it's buying anything for a single time use, it's not mending broken things, it's impulse purchasing rather than thinking hard about what you need
it's so easy to push the issue onto other people, but it's much more meaningful for dozens of people to not buy 1 or 2 things they don't need, than it is to get a single person to not buy 20 things.

Black Money
Tonight’s news ran 2 stories. One was about how many billions are predicted to be spent over the next 4 days in the name of Black Friday. The other was about how so many local charities are struggling right now due to increased demand and decreased donations.
There’s something very wrong here....

The Pressure and Subsequent Burnout of Bookstagram
Continuing from last week’s discussion post, let’s dive into the pressures of up-keeping a bookish social media account, specifically a Bookstagram account. I don’t have experience with a BookTok (and I will not be getting one anytime soon) but I will be mentioning booktoks as a part of the pressures of maintaining your brand and account as a bookstagrammer. Most people start a bookstagram…

am i the original, the remains, or the later writing?
Fresh off my first watching of Sophomore Year, I was desperate for more Nightmare Forest-esque content for my beloved bad kids. Thankfully, I immediately stumbled upon @gilears fic Over and Through! I absolutely adored this fic, bingereading it in one go, and knew I needed to show my love and feelings somehow!!
So here are the six bad kids' personal hells, shown in my order of reading!

what no i’m fine. i’m just thinking about how harrowhark chose to lobotomize herself and remove all memories of gideon to preserve gideon’s soul, and how ianthe chose to kill naberius and consume his soul instead of corona’s soul. and i’m just thinking about how both harrow and ianthe did this - refused to consume gideon's and naberius' souls- out of a twisted love they held for their cavaliers. because harrow wanted to retain any chance she had of bringing gideon back, and because ianthe wanted her sister to live. and i’m thinking about how neither gideon nor corona saw this as love but instead as rejection (gideon saying “i gave you my whole self and you didn’t even want it,” corona saying “she could have taken me”) and anyway it’s just fucked up but i’m fine

Have Libraries Gone Out of Fashion?
In a time of hyper consumerism, you would think that utilising libraries as a means of free reading would be taken up by more readers. After all, the number of books being published in a month is increasing well above the average reading speed of many and the financial strain these book hauls have can leave you feeling like you’re misspending your hard-earned money. It seems that libraries are…
