Day in Fandom History: November 7…
Flashing forward to the present on a cold and snowy forest of the Unknown with Wirt and Beatrice heading out to find Greg and rescue him from The Beast and get back home before it’s too late. The series finale of Over the Garden Wall, “The Unknown”, premiered 9 Years Ago.

gonna go ahead and confess this now. every gif or picture I have seen about over the garden wall was a doofenshmirtz flashback in my mind. like that scene where he says his parents didn’t show up for his birth. I assumed doof had a goofy brother and they had a traumatic childhood. and when people talked about over the garden wall, in my head I was imagining over the hedge. with the raccoon. those were the same movie in my mind until about 4 hours ago

Happy one year anniversary to my Over the Garden Wall VHS tape project!
Tumblr media
I made it in both orange and black. I like black more, but orange really feels more in the spirit of the season. I used the shell from a VHS copy of the Rugrats movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made the box art using various screenshots from the show, as well as some promo art. The description was taken from the DVD release, and the description title “will you take a peek?” was the tagline during the promotion of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The back also has a fun little easter egg: the barcode is for candy corn!
What’s more is the tape has a special cut of the series that I made myself. I cropped every single scene in every single episode to make sure it naturally fit in a 4:3 aspect ratio, and I edited the episodes together to flow as if it were one movie (the pacing is a little like Babe). Additionally, I added trailers for movies that give me the same nostalgic vibes (The Last Unicorn, Princess Mononoke, Steven Universe: The Movie, and The Iron Giant). I also added the Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network title cards.
I printed this cut into the tape by integrating a VCR into my PC setup. If you want to see more about this project, I have a few videos about it on my TikTok @MooseGBT, or you can check out the main one right here!
The video has an earlier version of the tape, which is why the actual tape doesn’t have a real label (it’s kind of just a piece of paper slapped on upside down with tape). The content on the tape, however, is the same.
This was a really fun project, and I’ve already started working on a VHS cut of Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Steven Universe: The Movie, the Star Wars Sequel trilogy (I have 1-6 on VHS, and I also want 7-9), and the other Star Wars movies (the Christmas Special, the Clone Wars, Solo, Kenobi, and Rogue One). I also have plans to begin editing and printing the FNAF movie, the spiderverse trilogy (once ATSV pt 2 comes out), and Don’t Hug me I’m Scared.

10 Most Underrated Cartoons
Tumblr media
Cartoons are great…we have many awesome hit shows from SpongeBob SquarePants to Amphibia to South Park and so on. But we also have quite a few gems that not many seem to talk about, and I feel that I should put the spotlight onto these underrated cartoons. Today, I will be going over my ten most underrated cartoons.
10. Over the Garden Wall
Tumblr media
When putting this cartoon on the list, I was heavily debating on whether I should put it here as one of the 10 most underrated cartoons or not. While it does seem to be quite positively received, and while it has had a decent amount of exposure from the cartoon community, I find that it is not really talked about as much as many others that came out at the same time as Gravity Falls. This perplexed me as I thought it was a strong series.
This was a miniseries that had 10 episodes in 2014. It was about two brothers named Greg and Wirt who end up in a mysterious land called the Unknown, and work to get home. It was a great series packed with mystery, darkness and awesome characters (especially Greg). While being underrated is a debate, there is no doubt that it is amazing! You can watch Over the Garden Wall on Hulu, Amazon or iTunes.
9. Hilda
Tumblr media
As this series is one that also is decently known, I was debating on whether this one should be put on here again. It is like Over the Garden Wall in the sense that it is pretty decently well known, but it is definitely a series that I feel is much less known than shows it came out with, and I feel that due to this, it should be on here.
Hilda is a series that has 2 seasons and 26 episodes. It is about an 11 year old girl named Hilda who goes on magical adventures and encounters mysterious creatures with her friends David and Frida and Twig, her pet deer frog. I loved Hilda as it has fun characters and a unique art style. Furthermore, Hilda takes on the common magic theme you see in TV shows, but executes it in a way that is unique! You can watch Hilda on Netflix!
8. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Tumblr media
While this series was screwed over by the network I feel that the main reason it is underrated goes deeper than that. When the series first started getting advertisements, many people (myself included) did not really like the idea of this series - especially since we just got a super dark and serious installment of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles prior to this show. This left a bad taste in our mouths and many of us did not want to check out this more lighthearted take on the turtles. However, coming back to it years later, it was a hidden gem!
Running for 2 seasons of 39 episodes from 2018 to 2020, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a totally new and unique adaptation of the turtles we all know and love. The series revolved around them before they actually became crime fighters. The main goal they have is to stop The Shredder from being resurrected for the first season while actually fighting him in the second season. They also learn about the secrets of Master Splinter in this adaptation. My favorite aspects of this series are the fact that they take the turtles and add their own unique spin to it so that it doesn’t feel like a copy of the other shows. I also like the designs quite a bit and I like the humor. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is definitely an underrated adaptation to this amazing franchise, and while I do prefer the 2012 installation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I had a great time with this one.
7. Final Space
Tumblr media
This was a series that I only found out about recently, and I am glad that I found it. This was a series which I have never seen on TV, or have heard anyone talk about until last year where I heard a few people online bring it up. I added it to my list there, and finally binged it a few months ago. I found it strange that not many talk about it though, so I did some research as to why. From what I was able to gather, it seems that when it started out, critics did not really love it, and they ignored the later episodes from there, which led to other things like minimal promotion. It’s honestly a shame as it is a great series.
Final Space ran for 3 seasons and 36 episodes. The series is about an astronaut named Gary Goodspeed, who after accidentally destroying spaceships, was sentenced to five years of prison on the Galaxy One spaceship. During his final year, he found an alien named Mooncake, who he finds out is being pursued by an evil dictator known as Jake the Lord Commander. Gary and Mooncake, along with some crewmates, go on a quest to save the universe, while trying to discover the mystery behind Final Space, which is supposedly where the universe ends. Final Space has everything I love about a story-driven cartoon - it has very emotional moments that keep me invested, it has a well rounded group of characters that develop as the series goes on, and the world-building throughout the series was amazing. Final Space is a truly amazing series, and I definitely think it deserved much better.
6. Glitch Techs
Tumblr media
Now we get onto Netflix shows…it’s not common for a Netflix show to take off regardless of how great it is, and Glitch Techs is a prime example of that. Glitch Techs definitely had a complex story behind its reason to being underrated which is more than just the fact that it is a Netflix original. It was originally supposed to be a Nickelodeon original, but unfortunately, Nickelodeon did not give the series much love. The first season was finished in 2019, but did not ever air on Nickelodeon until it finally premiered on Netflix in 2020 with not much promotion. It is truly a shame because with proper promotion from Nickelodeon, this could have been a massive hit with how great it is conceptually and from a storytelling standpoint.
Glitch Techs has a pretty unique concept - it revolves around two teenagers named Hector and Miko who essentially try to stop video game characters from wreaking havoc across the real world. Glitch Techs was another amazing series with lots to offer. We got an amazing series with cool characters being further enhanced by their awesome designs and we got a very unique concept being brought to the table. I really love Glitch Techs and I hope it can get a continuation some day.
5. 6Teen
Tumblr media
6Teen is severely underrated, and the main reason for this is Cartoon Network’s treatment of it. When 6Teen aired, it did not get as much promotion as a Cartoon Network original, which already kept it pretty underrated, but it also had many episodes removed with not many reruns. Overall, it did remain pretty underrated due to this, but the amount of content it got was satisfying.
6Teen was a series that ran from 2004 to 2010 and contained 4 seasons of 93 episodes. The series revolves around six teenagers, Wyatt, Jen, Caitlin, Jonesy, Nikki and Jude, and it just showcases them going through teenage life. 6Teen definitely had a lot to offer me - we got to see some very relatable situations, we had a loveable set of characters and I think this show was one of the few that executed raunchy humor in the right manner. You can watch 6Teen on the YouTube channel, Retro Rerun, Amazon Prime, Pluto or Tubi.
4. The Hollow
Tumblr media
Another Netflix original on here…what a surprise. It seems that it is not easy for shows to get popular on Netflix or any streaming service for that matter as people go to streaming services knowing what they want to watch. Furthermore, Netflix’s lack of marketing did not help the cause. We were unfortunately left with another great TV series ending up heavily underrated.
The Hollow is a series which ran from 2018 to 2020 for a total of 20 episodes. The series was centered around Adam, Kai and Mira, who wake up in a strange room with no memories. They work together to explore this strange new world that they have discovered, on a quest to return home (despite not knowing where home even is). When going through this new and strange world, they discover new friends and new enemies, and many different challenges are thrown their way. The Hollow is definitely a loveable series, with many amazing aspects including awesome worldbuilding, great diversity and a loveable set of characters. The Hollow is an extremely fun 20 episode series, and if you haven’t seen it, I recommend getting on Netflix now and checking it out!
3. Sym-Bionic Titan
Tumblr media
Another series that was underrated mainly due to Cartoon Network…Sym-Bionic Titan was and still is remembered as a cult classic. The reason for it being underrated is due to scheduling mainly. At first, it was on an action block on Cartoon Network, but it was eventually moved to Wednesday nights which is a terrible time slot, and it was eventually moved to Saturday morning with no warning. The reasoning behind this is not entirely known. Some say it was due to being unable to make toys, and some were saying that it was due to disputes with the team. One thing to say though is that it is severely underrated, though it does still have fans.
Sym-bionic Titan still became one of my favorites during its 20 episode run from 2010 to 2011. Sym-bionic Titan is about Lance, Octus and Ilana who fled from their planet Galuna to come to Earth due to their planet being consumed by these creatures known as the Mutraddi. As the leader of the Mutraddi wants to kill the next heir to Galuna, Ilana, the three must blend into Earth. The name of the series comes from what happens when the three combine - when they do, they form the Sym-Bionic Titan. I love the writing, characters and the artstyle. The series was definitely underrated, and it deserved much better than what it got from Cartoon Network. You can watch Sym-Bionic Titan on iTunes!
2. Motorcity
Tumblr media
Let’s continue on with shows that were screwed over by the network, and this time, Disney is to blame! Motorcity was a series that suffered poor scheduling and promotion, which was what led to its downfall. Firstly, the series received minimal advertising from the start (it seemed that Disney did not like the idea from the get go as it was being pitched for ten years before it even got the approval). Furthermore, there were lots of unnecessary hiatuses during the first season when the fandom was just starting to form. And the worst part of it all is that it kept getting moved around different time slots, and at one point, even had a timeslot at midnight. Due to the hiatuses and the time slots moving around, Motorcity was quite difficult to watch, making it quite unknown and underrated.
Motorcity ran from 2012 to 2013 for 20 episodes. The series was centered around a group of rebels known as the Burners, consisting of Mike (the leader), Julie (an insider gathering information from Abraham), Chuck (the tech guy), Dutch (the smart one), Texas (the muscle) and Jacob (the old aged mentor). Their goal is to stop a capitalistic billionaire named Abraham from taking over Motorcity which is a small part of the city they live in, Detroit. In terms of what I love about the series, I love the characters, the great story and plot line and the fact that the series has introspective and thought provoking moments.
1. Detentionaire
Tumblr media
Being from Canada, I get to see a lot of the underrated gems that we all have, and while I have seen a lot, this is probably the most underrated. Detentionaire’s reason for being underrated is quite sad. It was doing quite well in Canada, and it did get distributed to a few other countries where it also performed strongly. However, like 6Teen, Detentionaire got swept under the radar because of how it was treated by Cartoon Network in the US. What they did to Detentionaire hurt it much more though. It had lots of censorship like 6Teen, though, lots of the censorship was not even necessary. They would just remove random bits of dialogue. Furthermore, they only aired 20 of the 53 episodes on their website with the episodes out of order, and that hurt the show as not many people used the website, and if they did see it, they wouldn’t have understood anything as it was story-driven. Moreover, the player on their website was broken for a good portion of the time Detentionaire was there, which hindered its accessibility even more. All of these factors led to Detentionaire being virtually unknown in the US, and once it didn’t perform in the US, a bunch of other countries did not want to take it as they were skeptical on how the show would perform in their countries. It is a shame though because this show is one of the greatest I have seen. It is also in my top five favorite cartoons of all time.
Detentionaire is about a highschooler named Lee who gets framed for a huge prank and gets detention for a year. He goes on a quest to clear his name, and while he expected to just bust some ordinary prankster, he instead finds out that the prank was a small step to a major conspiracy. This conspiracy connects back to him and his entire bloodline. It is a shame that this series is not as popular as it should be. This is one of the few story-driven animated shows that I would say is on par with the legendary Disney trio (Amphibia, The Owl House and Gravity Falls). I have so much positive to say about this show - I would say that off the bat, my favorite aspects are the mystery and the plot progression as the plot really gets more intense with each episode. I would say that another highlight was the characters as they all feel like actual high school students which gives the show a sense of relatability. I really hope Detentionaire gets the resurgence it deserves some day as it is truly a masterpiece. There’s a reason that Detentionaire is at the top of a list of the 10 most underrated cartoons, and there’s a reason that it is in my 5 best cartoons of all time. I hope I have convinced at least a few of you to watch it. You can watch Detentionaire on the YouTube channel Retro Rerun or on Tubi!
Well, these were my 10 most underrated cartoons! I hope I introduced you to some new cartoons! Which one of these do you agree with? Which ones do you disagree with? Are there any more you would add? And be sure to follow me for regular blogs!

Things you should watch in the Autumn: A somewhat un-seasonal list by Alice
Majo No Tabitabi - This is a show about a witch who travels to various places and tries to avoid getting involved in the stories she encounters there. Don't watch this if sexual assault (mentioned) or gore (depicted) would be a problem for you, since episode 9 gets dark.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Do not watch the remake. Watch the original film from 1920. It's on youtube, and only a bit over an hour long. This is a film from the waning days of Weimar expressionism (and which was roundly denounced by many Weimar expressionists as inauthentic), with beautiful painted sets and a drama that, despite its simple structure, remains compelling over a century later.
Haibane Renmei - This show is about death, coping, and moving on. It came out the year I was born, and uses a muted colour palette to great effect in establishing its tone. It's a melancholy show about girls with wings living in an isolated rural community with strange rituals. It's beautiful, and it *feels* like autumn in a way nothing else on this list does, even though it isn't really an "autumn" show in the way something like Over the Garden Wall is. It leaves you with questions.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - This one is kind of a religious text for some trans women. It's a story of love and tragedy between magical girls, and the movie Rebellion continues the story in a logical and yet controversial-at-the-time way. Another film has been announced recently, so this is a good time to get into Madoka, or rewatch it if you haven't seen it in a while.
So Ra No Wo To - Also sometimes written as Sora No Woto, and I'm told one or both is wrong. This is, like Haibane Renmei, in the genre of melancholy shows about girls living in rural communities, but with a bit less darkness and a bit more in the way of comedy, though it still knows when to be serious. Honestly, it's not as good as Haibane Renmei, so if you only watch one of the two, watch that. It was unfairly written off as a K-On clone when it first came out, however, and deserves more love than it gets. Noel Kannagi is autistic. It leaves you with questions, though not as many as Haibane Renmei does.

My interpretation of otgw and my theories
●First of all im pretty sure most people know that it is supposed to be like Dante's inferno
Wirt (and Greg) are Dante
Sara is Beatrice
Ironically Beatrice is closest to virgil.
● I at least like to believe that the unknown is real and I have a couple of actual reasons why aside from just wanting it to be real
One we see what happened to the characters from the unknown Beatrice, the woodsman, auntie whispers, ect
Two Jason funderburker glows because of the bell
Three we see endicott's grave (which I will bring up again later).
● the unknown is either purgatory or hell maybe a little bit of both.
● this is less of a theory and more of an au that I thought of that I haven't seen anyone else talk about or think of
Beatrice's family and the corduroy family are related. That's it that's the whole idea.
● I like the theory of everyone in the unknown being dead
Like I said we see endicott's grave in episode 9 (which also makes that whole "so you're not a ghost" thing wrong at least a little)
Also like I said the unknown is either purgatory or hell probably a combination of the two so it would make sense for everyone to be dead
And we literally see living skeletons so yeah
●someone pointed out that in Dante's inferno they say that suicides take form of trees and...
Tumblr media
Yeeaahh...
FUCK
●this is not necessarily just about over the garden wall but
PRIME'D CATRA SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN BAD END FRIENDS
●I hate the idea of wirt being related to the pines family because I ship pinescone
Also at most there's a three year age gap between dipper and wirt and I think it's less
●"I don't really like labels i-i'm kind of just me" QUEER WIRT
●I love and hate the idea that Greg has been to the unknown before because as much it would make sense that would mean that either Greg has died before or had a near death experience before
●less of a theory more of a fact but the fight is over is about drowning
●I don't like the theory of Greg being Greg universe.
One Greg never mentions having a brother
Two Greg is a much happier kid than Greg was, like Greg talked about how not super happy his childhood was
●wirt's costume is very similar to the Dante's costume in Dante's inferno
● MAN I LOVE DEPRESSED/SEWERSLIDEAL TEENS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
●i love Greg
And I feel bad for the woodsman
I love Jason funderburker (frog)
I love Lorna and auntie whispers
I love Beatrice
I love wirt
●Bad end friends reminds me of nicktoons unite
●"I was never any good to him alive either" I SWEAR WIRT WAS AT LEAST I LITTLE SEWERSLIDEAL

Steven Universe: The Movie VHS
Here's a render of my box art draft! It's coming along pretty well, and I put some pretty neat Easter eggs in this one.
Tumblr media
Unlike my Over the Garden Wall tape, I'm deciding to go for a partial wrap around design. The front, top, and side are all part of the same image, with the back being reserved for a scenic shot of Beach City.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got in trouble (permanently banned, actually) for using the FBI warning logo in my art when trying to print OtGW at a print shop, so this time I'm replacing it with the age rating.
If you look closely, the number on the side is the last 4 digits of the mysterious girl's phone number from season 4 episode 6 Last One Out of Beach City.
Tumblr media
Additionally, the bar code is the bar code for a GameCube! I thought this was fitting since Steven owns a GC and he plays it constantly. It is also just a super nostalgic console for me, and I can't be the only one who related to Steven a little extra because of his console choice.
Tumblr media
The most difficult part of creating this physically is definitely going to be finding a pink VHS tape. I haven't been able to find the specific shade of pink that I want, but I've come pretty close with some VHS releases of Sky Dancers “The Sky’s The Limit” “On Wings Of Song.”
Tumblr media
Unfortunately this leans more hot-pink purpleish, and looking for the exact shade is a little hard because I've got Finn the Human syndrome (just a little colour blind). Worst case scenario, I find an off-coloured (lol) tape and I treat it a little bit with bleach or something.
And now to the pan and scan part of the project:
Editing this movie is hard. Really hard. This movie has a very stylized intro credits, most of which are formatted specifically for a 16:9 screen. I'm honestly considering reverse engineering the entire opening credits and just building it from the ground up for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
As for opening ads/title cards, I'm absolutely going to put an Over the Garden Wall trailer. I might just make an MCU type deal where all my tapes reference each other. That would be funny I think.
Anyway follow for more updates or to see silly little guys I make in blender every tuesday!

The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe is so darn good!!!
Tumblr media
It's a shame that the overseas release of this show (which, yes, is from the Gumball staff) has been such a hot mess because it is such a fun time even just two episodes in! It has such a fun cast of characters between the main duo (WE MUST STAN BERT!) and the many one-off characters, the humor is absolutely hilarious, and there's a genuine heart and intrigue to the show and it's world that make it that much more of a great adventure! (Seriously, the second episode made me emotionally invested in the well-being of a giant chicken monster. What have the people at this studio been on for the past 12½ years and where can I find it?) The best way I can describe it is that it feels like just tiny drops of Gumball's tone and 2D character design style (which should be obvious), Monty Python and the Holy Grail's spoofing of fantasy tropes, and even Over the Garden Wall's variety in settings (okay, maybe not much like that last one at all in any other way, but I digress). Such a great start for a show that I will definitely be keeping track of, even if I wish it didn't air new episodes so freaking early. (Seriously, does Cartoon Network even want to have a hit show anymore?)
In fact, the weird and sad thing about CN being at death's door and having so few new shows is that the ones I have gotten off my lazy butt to see have still been so good, between this and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (I know it was slapped onto adult swim at the 11th hour, but that's a CN show and you won't convince me otherwise, although I'm kinda glad [as] is taking it in if for no other reason than them not being allergic to Blu-Rays and decent scheduling). Admittedly Zaslav being Zaslav does worry me about both shows' futures, but hey, Unicorn at least has the armor of technically being aired as a show on the seemingly safer [adult swim] and the credentials of a legendary creator who wants to do three more seasons, while Ivandoe is apparently already at like Season 3 or something in Italy so at least I already know there's plenty more to come. Regardless of studio locations (or countries) and the company's fragile state, there's still magic left in Cartoon Network, and I really hope these two great shows are not the last we see of it.
Anyways check out new episodes Saturday mornings at 9 ET on Cartoon Network! Considering how good this show is and how bad CN is at marketing it, I have no shame playing the shill here.
Also apparently if an ex-animator is to be believed, Gumball Season 7 is coming out mid-to-late 2024 while the movie is on hold and I have no clue what to think. The way they'll handle that cliffhanger has just looked muddier by the day since it aired, but hopefully the show itself will still be as good we expected because wow I've missed peak Gumball! (Bonus points if it's actually as good as Seasons 2, 3, and suprisingly 6, instead of the kinda disappointing Seasons 4 and 5 although that's all a rabbit hole for another day.)

ilisten i have 0 stakes at all in the mario movie but i feel like the “ugh not another isekai” sentiment is getting passed around for no real reason. “isekai” is not a bad thing? it just refers to the trope of someone from the normal world getting sent to somekind of fantasy world (sometimes in reverse too)- here we call those “portal fantasies” and its not a singular genre.
anime fans who are disgruntled by the overinflation of shitty and cheaply written isekai being produced often complain about it but... i feel like people online have seen others complain about the overinflation of lazily written isekai and, without really understanding what the complaints were, somehow got the message that portal fantasies are a Bad Trope which isnt true.
its SUCH an old and common trope you can find it everywhere from mythologies about fairfolk to... you know what heres a list
spirited away
the owl house
every heart a doorway
otherside picnic
infinity train
the chronicals of narnia
inuyasha
hairy farter
futurama
coreline
stranger things
that one episode of adventure time where finn went to a pillow dimension
peter pan
lost, debatably
angel beats
the haunted house game in goosebumps
code lyoko
the neverending story
any episode of supernatural where they go to hell or an alternate timeline
enchanted
alice in wonderland
fullmetal alchemist 2003
that episode of kim possible where they have to go inside a video game
the matrix
digimon
believe it or not fucking homestuck has it on like 3 levels
over the garden wall
jumanji
the little mermaid, debatably
the wizard of oz
rwby but only vol 9
the fairly oddparents’ channel chasers movie
that teen titans episode where they go into a tv
the devil is a part-timer
neverwhere
any episode of wizards of waverly place where they go to the wizard world
cool world
planet of the apes until the twist happens
space jam
mlp equestria girls
and yes sword art online and all those other ones
like, you see how incredibly different all these things are? how much variety there is in tone, genre, demographic, themes, story, characters, all that? “isekai” isnt this monolithic thing its really just a trope. it can be used in good ways, it can be used in bad ways, no big. but its kind of sad seeing people take a cinemasins approach to it where they assume that Trope=Bad. its not! its one of the most classic and varied ones...
anyway in terms of the mario movie specifically, like i said idc, and you can for sure critique how the portal fantasy is written in it. it could be bad lol idk, but dont throw the baby out with the bathwater.

...So....about the first episode of RWBY Volume 9...
So after a long wait, the day has finally come. RWBY has returned with the first episode of its new season and naturally, this squiggle meister watched it and I have some thoughts.
Now it's literally the first episode so, overall, I wasn't exactly expecting much from it. I will say this though. I do love the new opening theme. I love the song---props to Casey Lee Williams on her first solo on a RWBY opening without her dad---and I also love the visuals featured in the opening from what we the audience can expect to come from this new season.
I think my main take away from this opening were two key things:
{SPOILERS AHEAD! NUFF SAID}
Ruby's dwindling emotional state  and the arrival of a mysterious new girl. For now, I’m simply going to dub this mystery girl as Alice because clearly she’s going to be our Alice in Wonderland inspired character.
Okay, let’s start with Ruby:
Ooof! I gotta say. Watching this opening as a Ruby fan was rough because, right out the gate, you can definitely tell that this season is going to hit Ruby the hardest.
Tumblr media
I’m used to seeing Ruby so full of spirit. The one to lead the charge and steer everyone on the right path. However; this time, Ruby isn't that person anymore.
You can clearly tell over the course of the opening how much further and further Ruby begins to drift and detract from the group---her confidence waning as she becomes more wary and gives into…whatever is happening to her in the Ever After.

Since the world is called the “Ever After” and was described as a fairy tale, according to Blake, does the mechanics of this mysterious world work similarly to a fairy tale where there will be good and bad endings to outsiders who happen to fall into that world?
I guess what I’m curious about is if there will be consequences to those who weren’t born in the Ever After? Y’know like it’s almost like an Infinity Train or Over the Garden Wall type of scenario where despite being a whimsical world on the surface, what the Ever After actually is is something that could be potentially dangerous to those who weren’t born in that world.
Like the longer an outsider stays in the Ever After without resolving whatever problems they’re supposed to figure out about themselves within that world, the more lost they become until eventually they lose themselves completely and become something else entirely---something inhuman and monstrous.
Thus getting a bad ending for themselves.
This is what makes me extra curious about the strange creature that we also saw in the first episode---The Jabberwalker.

"...Seeking...Searching...Scowering...Stalking..."
I dunno but…the very nature of this Jabberwalker fascinates me.
Imagine if…turning into a Jabberwalker is the fate of those who get bad endings and become lost to the Ever After?
They just turn into this monstrous creature and spend the rest of their days searching for something that they will never ever find cause they already lost themselves a long time ago.
This is why I’m digging the thought of there being consequences to the Ever After and why I’m concerned for Ruby’s mental state.
If Ruby continued on this path she’s in, what would happen to her?
Would she end up trapped in the Ever After forever while her friends returned to Remnant without her?
Or would she turn into a Jabberwalker and become a wandering soul lost to the Ever After?
Tumblr media
These are things I’m curious about cause it could make for a very compelling story. But since this is RWBY, I don’t want t assume too much from just the first episode.
The most I will say is that the V9 opening is a sign that, if Ruby is not too careful, she could end up succumbing to her negative emotions and getting a bad ending for herself…if that is the way things are going to go.
Compared to the rest of RWBY---Blake, Weiss and Yang--- who all seemed the more optimistic ones for once, Ruby was the one who seemed the most despondent and its this detail that I found quite compelling since Ruby has always been portrayed as a beacon of hope---the one to guide everyone and keep them going through the darkness.

And this is what also makes this mysterious new Alice girl character so interesting to me too.
I know it would be easier to write off this Alice girl as a newfound ally to RWBY, similar to Little, as she seems innocent enough on the surface, y’know what I mean?
Tumblr media
Just another young human girl who mysteriously ended up in the Ever After like the others and has to find her way home somehow.
Tumblr media
However, given how this girl is portrayed in the opening in comparison to Ruby, I can’t help but feel like this Alice character is a threat somehow.
At least…a threat to Ruby in terms of her emotions, how she’s feeling and how she will continue to feel over the course of the season.

On this matter, I have two theories:
Either this mystery Alice girl is going to turn out be a sort of antagonist---like maybe she’s Neo in disguise or someone Neo tricked into helping her by messing with RWBY while they were lost in the Ever After, mainly targeting Ruby? Or perhaps...a more farfetched theory would be that the Ever After isn’t actual a real world and is one big illusion concocted by Neo to mess with Ruby and her friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, I highly doubt that last one is it but overall, I think the OP made it very clear that Neo will be our main big bad for this stand alone season; playing the role of not the Queen of Hearts but more so our Mad Hatter.
I’m just trying to figure out what her connection to this Alice girl will be because clearly there is a connection. There are just certain moments in that opening that made me think that there is something between these Neo and Alice:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Either it's that...or perhaps this Alice girl will zero ties to Neo at all and will just be there to pose a problem to Ruby.
There were moments in the OP that showed the Alice girl leading RWBY through the Ever After instead of Ruby.
Tumblr media
This just makes me feel like Alice is going to contribute to Ruby’s negative state. Like Alice is going to be the embodiment of who Ruby used to be---the optimistic leader and that will probably be a hard pill for Ruby to swallow since she will probably begin to not feel like herself anymore and may even begin to question who she truly is.
Whether she even belongs with her team or maybe they’re better off with the Alice girl taking her place and becoming the new her or something like that.
I dunno, this OP just gave me so many thoughts to think about on that subject. But for now, this is what I have to say in a nutshell:
I don’t trust the mystery Alice girl character featured in the OP. To me, her very presence and existence feels highly suspicious because I feel like she could turn out to be Neo or someone working with Neo. And if she’s neither of those things then my other guess is that she will cause problems for Ruby. Whether intentionally or not, I feel like Alice will be a rival for Ruby and have a negative impact on her; contributing to a lot of her emotional turmoil and insecurities about herself for this season.
That’s my guess.
Other than that, not much else to say except a few last minute points:
Already I'm digging this volume from a visual standpoint. I can already tell that I'm going to be gushing ALOT over all the visual development art and background/environment designs for this season and I can't wait to see all the fantastic work the CRWBY team put into this aspect of the season.

I have no idea what Jaune’s purpose for this season is going to be.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, out of everyone else, he seems the most out of place to me because I don’t know what his story is going to be and how all of that will tie into everything else to go on in the Ever After.
I don’t hate Jaune as a character. I just hated how he was used in V8 which left me questioning why he’s even here for V9 in the Ever After. But I guess I’ll find out more as the story progresses. I’m bummed that we won’t get to see the other characters for this season---no Nora, no Ren, no Emerald and of course, no Oscar. The Pinehead in me is definitely saddened by this but hopefully the development for Ruby that was promised for this season will make up for it.
And yeah, that’s it for me to say for now. See ya’ll for the next episode.
