watching Liam O'Brien do a spectacular fantasy!German for dozens of episodes has impressed me so much and yet nothing could have possibly prepared me for the man starting to sing, of all the songs, "Laurentia, liebe Laurentia mein"

the immersion! if you reached to the very back of my memory there'd be like ten folk songs there and this one, which we used to have to sing at 7:00 in the morning on choir retreats while doing squats for all the weekdays, would definitely be there. it's a silly ditty you've heard somehow exclusively in childhood, it's a little game song for children. If all else was tainted by your later life that song would probably survive, it's perfect

Anyone else think Marinette’s new outfit is just really bad?

I can’t claim to have that great of an eye for fashion, but this just looks like a tacky performer costume to me- the tights, the jacket looking like a fake tux, right down to the tiny bow tie that’s just sitting on her shirt- rather than an outfit an actual person would wear, especially someone who’s biggest dream is to be a fashion designer. And I don’t really think the pink of her shorts go well with the brown-gray leggings, the colors just feel off to me.

I want to like it, I think it has aspects I enjoy, but overall it just doesn’t do it for me and I kinda hate it.

Idk am I going crazy here? I haven’t seen a ton of discussion about her new design, so it’s hard to say what the general opinion is, but even if the stuff I have seen, it’s usually excitement for it, nothing really negative (design-wise, not about the narrative or overall direction of the show lol). But I’d really like to hear what others think about it.

The reason these takes are ridiculous is bc they're acting like it's targeted towards individuals & some black mirror individual scoring system shit that controls the lives of individuals, when in reality it 1) does actually exist 2) is primarily targeted towards businesses (hence why "man on the street" interviews with people tend to show normal ppl in China don't really know about it) & 3) is actually cool and good

It shouldn't need to be said but I'm seeing a lot of vitriol towards Ashton about their actions and I have to say I don't agree with them.

At the clock tower Fearne brought up the shard, stated that in her opinion Ashton should take the shard because she didn't want it. Ashton decided then as a result they'd take it, but because it was an extreme risk made very aware to them all they knew the other Hells wouldn't allow them to go through with it. Ashton asked Fearne if she was okay with both of them going together alone with the plan, reiterating that they didn't want to put this on Fearne, that if they died Fearne would not be to blame, and that they have no intention of dying, and Fearne said yes.

Fearne having second thoughts at the Ziggurat was just worry, because she cares deeply for Ashton, Ashton kissing her was not manipulation either; it was letting go of fear, having no regret with the person they also care deeply for and taking the risk. And yeah, it was frightening, 10 rounds of perpetual fiery near-death situations and one actual death situation; Laura is fuming, Ashley cannot look, Liam is playing Mad World on loop in his mind, even Matt is completely on edge, but they survived. Accusations that Ashton manipulated Fearne to selfishly take the shard seem to misinterpret the shard saga as well as Fearne and Ashton's characters, they will get a very intense amount of chastising for sure, but it will be out of love, out of the fear that they were going to lose them, not because they thought Ash was manipulative.

You listened to the Superman radio show? Cool! :D I must ask, what did you think of the original Clan of the Fiery Cross arc? How do you think it compares to Superman Smashes the Klan?

Yes! I believe that Superman Smashes the Klan improves on the original Clan of the Fiery Cross radio show arc in just about every possible way! Still, I was pleasantly delighted by how biting the original radio arc was (I listened to it in anticipation for the graphic novel)- it's no wonder that some of the lines were lifted directly into Smashes the Klan.

The main difference between Clan of the Fiery Cross and Smashes the Klan is who is centered in the narrative. In the radio show, while it did tackle anti-Asian racism directly, it was still focused on the white characters' feelings and opinions about it. Superman teams up with Chuck Riggs while Tommy Lee and his family are essentially anecdotes, narratively. I think they barely had speaking lines. The white characters are characterized as either "good eggs or bad eggs": the Clan are deplorable people and all the other white characters are critical of them. Chuck's mom does a raving condemnation of them to make this clear.

Meanwhile in Smashes the Klan, the story centers the Chinese American family. Roberta- a character who was only mentioned once is now the main character and heart of the story! All the characters are complex- Tommy makes racist jokes in order to fit in, their dad desperately wants to assimilate through anti-Blackness, etc. Racism is shown as a systemic issue that affects everyone. Instead of white people being either racist or not, it's shown regardless of their opinion that they all benefit from a racist system. Chuck's mom still criticizes the Clan "but is it really all that bad to want to live among only your kind?" and Chuck repeats this notion when talking to Tommy. All in a very accessible language for kids to understand. And of course, Superman relating directly to Roberta's family as a character instead of being just A Force Of Good Who Fixes Things. The climax in Smashes the Klan is a lot stronger too.

Still, the Clan of the Fiery Cross arc is absolutely worth a listen. It's an important piece of history! It has a lot of misinformation spread about it that's so easily debunked by just listening to it. Great performances, I can see why it was so popular! It's still way more political than most Superman media nowadays. Very fun to compare the graphic novel to it.

Imagine putting your heart and soul into a project because you love the source material, but have to work around certain scenarios because they won’t really translate well to screen, which is fine because you’ve gotten help/blessings from the ORIGINATOR of said source material so you’re feeling really good about everything. Maybe you wish you could change somethings, but you’re proud of the story that you’ve told and how true it is to the HEART OF THE STORY…

Only to then read that some of the fans of said source material think the show is awful and (somehow??) worse than the bad movie adaptations that disregarded the heart of the material (the actually STORY), all because of a casino and either adding or dropping minor story beats.
