Cassian appreciation post
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that the character who should be all brawn no brains (that stereotype) is the character with probably the most emotional intelligence in the entire series. Cassian is always monitoring Inner Circle in a different way than Azriel does. He gets Feyre to vent her thoughts and face them, knowing that keeping them in will likely eat her up on the inside (while her fists burn his hands). He understands Nesta’s power is strong and volatile so he visits her at the House of Wind and pesters her to keep her power from going berserk. Then when Rhysand and Feyre come back from their… “mating trip”… he provokes Rhys into a fight to keep him from losing it on someone else. Not to mention 500+ years of being the mediator and keeping the peace between Az and Mor. Rhys does his part keeping the Inner Circle together and checks their well-being, but Cassian does probably the most to check their emotional and mental well-being. Consider as well that he’s Illyrian (not a race of faeries known for kindness or compassion) and one who’s praised for being a fierce warrior. Then add in that he’s a bastard brought up in the harshest of conditions with nothing to his name. Most people in the same situation you would expect to be bitter, cold and selfish. But Cassian is probably the brightest personality in the room and always welcoming to anyone who isn’t an enemy. How much of that is because he’s the general who monitors his soldiers and how much of that is his personality, upbringing and personal philosophy is something I’d very much like to see in the future books.

The Night Court's Shadowsinger
There is so much mystery to Azriel’s character (he’s shadowy LOL… ok I’ll see myself out) but i wanna highlight a few aspects I found intruiging. The first is his shadows. They speak to him, telling him secrets and he has an ability (?) to sink into them and blend into them. It doesn’t seem like a kind of magic, very much different than the darkness/night magic of Rhys. Almost like he himself is a being from darkness and shadows (like Nuala and Cerridwen?). Almost like his ability is alive, singing to him from the shadows (or does he sing to it, by using it?). The perfect ability for a spy, as there are always shadows around when people do or say secret things. Also interesting is the fact that Azriel can winnow. It has to be part of his shadow abilities since Cassian can’t (makes sense since Illyrian magic is only meant for destruction). And what about truthteller? A terrible blade with ancient runes. Where did he get it? Are those runes Wyrdmarks? Is it connected to his shadow abilities? Is that how Elain was able to appear behind the King of Hybern without being detected? Does it store his power or drain it without his knowledge? And was she able to use it because their powers are intertwined/connected in some way? Is that why he was able to recognize her as an oracle? All of that aside, I’m gonna make some people mad and say I don’t believe Az loves Mor. Not currently and not before. Before it was a longing, an affection maybe for someone who showed him and treated him with kindness he didn’t know before. Now, I think his feelings are more close to that of loyalty. I also think he knows Mor’s secret. The shadows hold no secrets from the Shadowsinger.
