I'm thinking about making a tk blog. Do you have any tips for people who are just starting out and how they can start gaining a following?
hi!!! yes!! please make one!! it makes me so happy seeing new blogs pop up!!
i have a few nuggets of advice ive learned in my almost two (2) years of running this mess of a blog:
1. write the content you want to read
this is super, super important and the reason i am saying this first is because it’s going to be YOUR blog! maybe your fave fandom doesn’t have a lot of tk content, or maybe not the type of tk content you want, so it’s up to you to make it! you’ll have the most fun creating stuff that interests you. writing things you specifically like can help overcome burnout and writers block, too! i always joke about having my personal projection fics and characters, but honestly being able to create stories i like to read is what makes all of this so enjoyable.
2. tag everything!
some people don’t like to tag because they don’t wanna flood fandoms with their stuff, but in my opinion it’s really necessary to let readers know what kind of content is in your work. some people actively blacklist certain ships or tags for personal reasons, and it can be upsetting and/or triggering for them to see untagged stuff. they will appreciate your diligence. on the flip side, for those who ARE seeking out your type of content, it’ll be easier to find you through tags! just make sure the tags are relevant. don’t tag just for the sake of tagging cuz then people will click and expect something only to be disappointed. for example, tagging “tenmiko” but neither tenko or himiko are actually in the post. i am kind of a freak and tend to overtag at times, but i do it to protect ppl who don’t wanna see this kind of stuff and also to attract people who DO want to find it.
3. take requests!
there are soooo many writing prompt posts circling out there, choose some that you like a lot, reblog them announcing your open inbox, and let your followers send in requests for short drabbles or fics! that’s how i gained a lot at first :-) it helps a lot if you’re willing to write for more than one fandom or ship, but if you’re not comfortable with that then make sure to set boundaries and state them clearly. example: maybe you’ll write for oumasai and saimami, but not oumota or oumami. or maybe you’ll write a platonic pair, but not romantically. when taking requests, i also suggest keeping them short and limiting what you produce each day to avoid burnout. unless you are possessed by the muse of high word count, which happens to me at least 84 times a day sjdhsj. also... don’t feel the need to take every single request. if you don’t want to do one, don’t force it. forcing yourself will get you a direct flight to burnout city.
4. decide right away if you’re gonna be sfw or not
i personally recommend keeping your blog sfw, because then a wider audience of people will be able to read your content. of course this isn’t me saying not sfw stuff is bad! but ive noticed a lot of ppl in the tk community tend to gravitate towards sfw. again, this is for you to decide for yourself based on your boundaries and limits. if you end up making both sfw and not sfw, make sure to TAG accordingly.
5. be consistent!
not everyone has the ability to write or produce every day, but it’s good to have some consistency or maybe even a weekly schedule! if you’re active and post often people will notice and follow, especially if you’re in a fandom that’s currently very popular or gaining momentum. utilize the queue feature if you’re not gonna be around for a while!
and last...
6. be nice and support other tk blogs!
the people in this community are super sweet for the most part, and a little kindness goes a long way! reblog other people’s fics, leave kudos or comments, or send nice asks on anon if you’re shy! people really appreciate it and will support you too if they see you doin them a solid.
i think i covered the essentials, but if i forgot anything ill add more later! i hope this helps!!
