It’s especially fun to defend on Overwatch’s Hollywood map now because your job is essentially to stop a Hollywood executive from getting where he wants to go

2023, The Year of Self-Sabotage
Has anyone noticed the trend businesses have been on in 2023? There's a LOT of self-sabotage going on in the business world. Throughout my life, and everyone else has their own observations too, once in a while you see a company make a boneheaded decision about their product or service. And once in a while you'll see a decision get made that is bad, but maybe it at least has some justification (even to an anti-capitalist goober like myself). But this year has been nonsensical moves of greed or product/service sabotage that make no sense for longevity or harm what's in the best interest of the consumer.
Activision-Blizzard: The Overwatch debacle, and Diablo Immortal's scummy practices.
Netflix: The account sharing debacle.
Twitter: Maximum divorced loser Elon Musk destroying its functionality and branding and we still call it Twitter.
Reddit: Inspired by Musk's stupidity, the API tools debacle. Shame on the Reddit communities for not knowing how to strike btw (you don't put a time limit on it).
Hollywood: Pulling shows and films from streaming services to declare them as failed products and somehow get a tax write-off for it.
Also Hollywood: Willing to take quarterly losses greater than the annual cost to meet the demands of two striking unions put together.
Unity: Announced in the past day that it will charge developers a fee for installations because greed.
Titan Submersible: "Safety is for losers" says billionaire who proceeds to use his shoddy tech to do a murder-suicide.
Starbucks: Breaking ALL of the labor laws to try and stop unionization. Admittedly a reach to be on this list but the situation (like all the others) is ongoing and can compound.
Embracer: A massive corporate company that bought a bunch of smaller companies. Thought a 2 billion dollar deal with the Saudi government was a sure thing, so they spent 2 billion dollars on stuff. Deal falls through, so they start closing companies they acquired.
That's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. These aren't business decisions done for the sake of consumers. These are all decisions done to spite consumers or the workers who produce the products and services.
People try to remember years as being the "year of" something. And it's a thing I do too. For me, 2023 is the year of corporate self-sabotage.

Sokka winning over Willie Jack in the indigenous character poll thing is just kinda got me feeling a way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an absolutely nothing issue. This really doesn’t matter. But it does have me thinking about this pattern I see a lot in pop culture where the, sometimes very racist expectations of the, often very white, dominant group and what they read as genuine and representative will often very much not align with the traits, ideas, characterization, and coding the in-group will identify with. I think a very good illustration of this is Overwatch, specifically the handling of Pharah. So, if you don’t know what happened. Parah, an Egyptian character, got skins called Thunderbird and Raindancer. (Yeah, you should already be groaning.) Not really the best. And there are plenty of articles on why they suck ass.
Tumblr media
That was enough for a mostly white audience to start fanoning that she might be half-Indigenous. Which isn’t wrong in concept, as a biracial person I can indeed confirm that biracial people do indeed exist. But the why they were marking them was that it was meeting the concept of who and what a native is in their head. A cultural expectation of what it means to be indigenous that indigenous stories rarely get to exist outside of. (And we could turn this into a related discussion of the specter of medicine shows and the hollywood indian or the big three of shitty native reps which originated most of these expectations directly or indirectly, but that is for another time and another post.) Blizzard, being blizzard, tends to like to incorporate fanon into canon if it’s loud enough and doesn’t clash with their plans as a way of making them seem and fans feel engaged. So they made it canon because a mostly white fanbase saw a set of kinda shitty skins and said “indian”. This is despite push back kinda being pretty vocal and visible at the time. It felt hollow, disingenuous, and out of nowhere to a native audience who never read native off her and it never being meaningful before. And nothing meaningfully native was incorporated into her in the future. Nothing that a native audience would identify with or recognize could be seen in her. And it’s not like there wasn’t talk of indigenous coding in overwatch.. But Parah was never the person it was attached to. That was McCree. He has big shitty uncle energy (among other things).
But again. Because one met a mostly white fandoms expectations of native, and thus got more noise. One got the canon and the other got an ugly beach skin where they made him blonde. What we flagged as native and what white consumers flagged as native did not align.
Ain’t nothin’ wrong with Sokka. Sokka has a lot of features I wish more native characters got to have on tv. I know a lot of Alaskan Native folks that fuck with him. But if you tell me he’s more native than arguable the most native character to ever been on tv, from a tv show written, directed, and acted by Indigenous folk in a way tv hasn’t gotten the opportunity to be previously, I’m going to side eye you.

Emo Head Cannons for the Main 4 Boys!
A massive thank you to my favourite ever @kira-broflovski for our chats about this and for also helping me with ideas for these!!! 💞
Tumblr media

- "I'm not emo, I'm just misunderstood."
- Goes skateboarding with Kenny and Stan, even though he's awful at it
- Smokes cigarettes to be 'cool and different'
Kyle ashes his cigarette before sighing. "My parents just don't get it! It's their fault I'm so emo in the first place."
Stan 💙
- Was emo in the womb
- Also plays Overwatch with Kyle but he deffo mains Reaper or Roadhog
- Usually drunk
- "I was emo before it was cool."
- Definitely cries to My Chemical Romance
- Doesn't hate furries as much as Kyle but definitely doesn't like them.
- Wardrobe consists of band tees, black hoodies, black beanies and black skinny jeans
- "I don't have to dye my hair to be emo, my hair is naturally black."
"My dad grows weed, so I can get it whenever I want it." Stan said, brushing his long black fringe from his eyes.
Eric ❤️
- He isn't emo, he bullies them
- "You guys look like a gay boy band."
- Is secretly a furry (The Coon is literally an animal)
- Kyle is still his sworn enemy
- Probably listens to Hollywood Undead
- Denies it though
- Is secretly a massive nerd but will never let anyone know, it's his biggest weakness
- "Well, good luck to you guys seeing MCR in concert cause they broke up years ago."
- Gamers vs Furries (Kyle vs Eric)
"Hey, Kyle! I didn't know Jews could be emo!" Eric shouted down the corridor.
"Oh yeah? Well at least I'm not a furry like you!"
Kenny 🧡

Out of curiosity, what was the problem with Overwatch’s maps? I definitely found them frustrating at times, but I don’t know enough about game design to tell Why.
I only played the initial selection of maps (if I remember correctly, they were Hanamura, Hollywood, Dorado, Route 66, Gibraltar, King's Row, Ilios, Nepal, Lijang Tower, Volskaya, and Temple), but from memory, most of them—Hanamura, Volskaya, and Dorado especially—were poor fits for the gameplay Overwatch wanted to have.
Many were a series of very simple killboxes, just these big squares of death connected by only 2-3 possible paths, most of which connected close to each other. This meant Defenders only really needed to be facing one way to see everybody coming in, so choosing to go in from one route or another often felt pointless. Most matches would have you spend long periods in a stalemate with very little progress, with you sitting behind your tank as both teams rammed at each other endlessly.
This wouldn't necessarily be so bad: stalemates can be intensely fun standoffs with a lot of action so long as they don't last for too long or progress both positive and negative visibly occurs for a tug-of-war feeling, but this did not fit well with Overwatch having ultimates.
Ultimates were wide, flashy, very deadly moves that normally would serve to keep the game moving, but the issue was that unlike say, the Medic's ubercharge in TF2 where it was only limited to one character and could be stopped by killing the medic before activation, everybody in Overwatch had Ultimates. This meant that these stalemates often just had players attempting to play safer and build their ultimates in order to be the big hero that breaks the stalemate, while the other team was doing the exact same thing. Back then, Mercy's ultimate also revived all fallen allies on the field (this was later removed because even Blizzard realized that was fucked up), so in case one team actually managed to get a clear victory in their skirmish, one character could actually do a full reset.
The combination of the map design with the combat mechanics made Overwatch's battles feel creatively dull. It was all flashiness (sometimes too much flashiness to the point of unreadability when multiple ultimates were popped at once) with very few ways to actually feel engaged in terms of tactics. You need to feel like your decision-making or raw technical skill is what led you to victory, and in many times in Overwatch it could feel like you simply lucked out in that smorgasborg of ultimates.
_____
While I'm here, I might as well point out my complaints with Overwatch's approach to character skill expression as well.
A high range of skill expression is why Lucio was actually one of the better designed and fun heroes: his ability set was simple but flexible, with an incredibly high skill ceiling due to his special mobility passive that let him run horizontally across walls. This let Lucio traverse the maps in ways others could not, and probably in ways unintended by the developers. He could flank the enemy, outmaneuver them when caught, and surprise them in ways like no one else could despite his original intended role being as a support character. For example: in Lijang Tower there's a bridge between two areas that a good Lucio can cheese the enemy team with. By gliding along walls, Lucio can approach the enemy from a completely unexpected angle, then use his right click push ability to shove them all off the bridge and into their doom.
Overwatch, being a character-centric game, needed to embrace more of this kind of combat where characters could pull off feats that no one else could do in spectacular fashion, often without even needing to rely on an ultimate to get Play of the Game. This gave them a unique personality through gameplay, and leaning more into this would have made the game far more enjoyable in my eyes. I was unhappy when Blizzard instead repeatedly nerfed characters with such high skill ceilings to try to bring them down to the line of everyone else.
Did you know that Genji could animation-cancel in the first month of Overwatch? Very high level Genji players like Seagull were pulling off very flashy moves with it early on. You could use his superior mobility to approach weaker targets on the enemy team, and then right click > standard melee > shift in order to do his shuriken spread, followed by his melee attack, which would then be animation canceled by his dash ability. This did a lot of damage, often enough that a low HP character like Tracer would die from the bleed inflicted by the dash, making for a badass assassination combo where you don't even need to look back at the enemy to finish them off: once they realize what's happened, they were already dead.
And then Blizzard was like "fuck that's a lot of damage" and then removed the bleed on Genji's dash almost immediately (no more opponent dying a few seconds after you dash through them, you had to kill them with the dash itself which was much more lame), then removed the ability to animation cancel Genji's melee attack with his dash soon after until Genji was just hopping around throwing shurikens and waiting for his ultimate to be able to dive.
TL;DR - The initial 12 maps were often just a series of killboxes glued together by a handful of routes that were often meaningless flanks. The problem was exacerbated by ultimates, and I did not like the direction Blizzard went for balancing the game.

Day 3: Hollywood Studios
I woke up today at 4am and couldn’t get back to bed. I had a test due this week so I headed down to the community center and completed it. I played some Overwatch and then went back to bed for a little and passed some time until my parents arrived for the day.
We arrived at the park right as it opened and headed to our first ride: Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad. A new favorite of mine! The technology used was fascinating and something I will try and figure each time I go. The other ride I felt similarly about was Rise of the Resistance. This was on a much larger scale or WOW that I can’t describe unless you go for yourself and experience it. We were able to go in every single ride and do so leisurely. The park’s crowd was mild for spring break (again).
For lunch we had some hotdogs. I can’t remember the name but it’s the sailboat near the blue dinosaur. And for dinner we ate at Round up Bbq. A unique family style bbq experience where you are considered a “toy” and have to be still when Andy come looking to play.
I could write more I’m sure but it’s not 11:30pm and I feel like I’m crashing out lol.
I will remember this day for a very long time. It was so special having my parents with me at what’s soon to be the place I get to go to work at. I love them so much and they truly mean the world to me. They even wore matching shirts!🥺

that part is a little sad to me because for some reason i find the mundane aspects of overwatch to be far more interesting than whatever the hell the main game is about. what's the day-to-day life someone living in new york city like in that universe? what's it like to go to school? what kinds of new college majors have been created from all the technological advances? what's it like to live in a city ran by vishkar? what kinds of new cosmetics have been formulated over the years? what would it be like trying to make it as a big-time actress in hollywood? i just know we'll never get any kind of development on that front because all the money goes to the pew-pew-flashy-kabooms
Bestie you are so so so correct. Mundane world building is my favorite thing about the ow fandom and I love it when it bleeds through the cracks of fanworks- fics that include an added piece of theoretical tech that lets Rein actually lift his armour?? The fanworks of omnics with mechanical body mods and hairstyles entirely without hair??? D.va drinking joke energy drinks that imply a vast in-universe structure of capital and influencers that is so much like our own and yet altered????
It’s all so cool and so alive and such a charming and human part of transformative work
As for sitting there with all those emotions and knowing canon will never answer, think it’s kind of an inevitable quirk of any shooter with a 🌻✨big and varied cast!✨🌻 Ultimately, the characters are there as vehicles for a fun game experience and they provide that, even if we never get to see Rein’s neighbor tending to a vegetable garden that is both futuristic and achingly mundane, no matter how much I’d love to see it

So, I want to make a request but first I want to know what you write for, like the fandoms and what are your boundaries
-🇷🇺
Hello Mr! 🇷🇺 You can see my pinned post for more. And don't be shy to send your request!
I write for like thousands of fandoms so I maybe can't remember them all just add the fandom from the characters they are from. I can honestly write an OC x reader I don't mind at a;
I don't have many boundaries. Just nothing that's too weird to write. Like on my blog I don't care much about something crazy or weird or something out of this world crazy.
I definitely don't write for female readers. I don't write for teen wolf or maze runner.

There was no feeling comparable to getting off a DVa ult back in the Overwatch golden age. The shit eating grin you’d be wearing irl as you flung your exploding mech over the wall of the first point on Hollywood, watching as the enemy team looked up with that slow realization of doom, like the dinosaurs about to be hit by that fuckin meteor. The explosion and the resulting bodies ragdolling as they flew through the air. The spamming of “Tehehe GG!!” as you did the Party Time emote on the point afterward. Some ults came close, but none could match that same pure chaotic Fuck You energy.

Glitchbot says "Winston Overwatch" on Hollywood. It's now canon.
Winston started putting “Overwatch” as his last name on tax forms because people who didn’t know he’s a gorilla would be like “Just Winston? Like Cher? Or Beyoncé?”

Okay Map/Hero Matching time
Explained the criteria in my last post, but to recap the idea is to see what heroes go along with what maps, either by shared nationality or story relevance.
These are two different criteria for a reason: Like I also mentioned in my last post, Moira is from Ireland, but there's no Irish map in-game as of now. However, she has significant story ties to Oasis, a map that takes place in Iraq. I would think it fair to say then that Oasis could be considered "Moira's map" even though there's a mismatch of nationality.
I did the list both ways, both attaching heroes to a list of maps, and assigning maps to a list of heroes. Let's start with the latter first:
Starting with the Tanks:
Tumblr media
This is gonna be the same story with Zenyatta later, but Ramattra is weird because he technically doesn't have an official nationality. He's an Omnic built in the Omniums, with his exact location of origin unknown. He spent a good portion of his life in Nepal, but it's not his home country. However, it very clearly is the location most significant to him personally.
Orisa on the other hand is very clearly considered to be from Numbani. She was created in Numbani, her creator is from Numbani, they both currently still live in Numbani, I think it's pretty safe to say she's Numbanian. For what it's worth, Orisa is the only non-human character given a nationality on the fandom wiki.
Notice I also listed some maps that have an "indirect" connection to the hero. These are connections that don't necessarily correspond to place of origin or home or base of operations, but have some significance to the character. This is kind of an iffy criteria, so I got stricter with it as I went on.
Now for Damage heroes:
Tumblr media
All of the Americans are in this category, go figure. America is also, go figure, the country with the most maps as of now (Route 66, Hollywood, Blizzard World, and Midtown. Actually only 4, I miscounted in my head but the point on the chart stands). The most interesting one to talk about is Reaper, who was a cop in Las Angeles before his time in Overwatch and Talon, which would technically make Hollywood "his map" more than anyone else's, but the hero and map have literally no significance to each other otherwise.
Bastion is also... weird. They're the one hero who doesn't have a specified point of origin, and also doesn't have a clear "home country". The Bastion robot units were originally created by SST Laboratories, which based on Torbjorn being a critical member of, may suggest that it's a Swedish company, and therefore by proxy you could consider Bastion to be Swedish? That's a bit of a stretch though, so to be safe I left their nationality blank, and only considered their resting place (Black Forest, Germany) as a directly relevant map.
Echo is the last weird "what country is the robot from" to discuss. Her creator, Mina Liao, is Singaporean. If we apply the Orisa logic of a robot created directly by one individual inheriting that creator's nationality (especially considering Echo literally copied some of Liao's behaviors and even her voice, with some sources implying a sort of mother/daughter bond between them), then Echo is also Singaporean. However, it's unlikely she was built in Singapore. Liao made Echo late into her time at Overwatch, whose major bases of operations were in Switzerland and Gibraltar. Either way... yeah I'm not researching Singapore's citizenship laws to determine if she counts for that.
(also if you look at the chart and say "what the hell are Gothenburg and Suravasa", then it's something I've explained before, but will get into more later here)
Now for the Supports:
Tumblr media
Nothing we haven't seen already at this point, I've explained most of these with other heroes earlier.
Only thing to note is Ayutthaya, the Thailand-based CTF map added all the way back in Lunar New Year 2018. While we do finally have a Thai hero in Lifeweaver, as far as we know now he doesn't have anything in particular to do with the map. Ayutthaya as an arcade mode map doesn't have any lore in general (shoot, even less than most of the others), let alone anything tying it to Lifeweaver. Would've been a hell of a cool trick to have Lifeweaver planned to tie into the map since it was added, but... yeah no I don't think that's likely at all.
Now for the other way around, looking at this from the perspective of what maps have relevant heroes.
I didn't consider the non-canon maps (The 4 Workshop maps and the upcoming Talantis) or any map variants for... hopefully obvious reasons.

I did these charts first, so I was a lot more lenient on what "indirect connections" would include. There's a number of maps that are relevant to Overwatch as a whole or Talon as a whole, but not any one member. For those, I just put the group name in that section.
As you might notice, a lot more maps don't have heroes than heroes not having maps. The only American map having any actual ties to any heroes is Route 66, the rest are completely unrelated.
Next up though, the Control, Push, and Assault maps:

Nothing else to note here, other than clarifying that yes, I am aware that Antarctica technically isn't a country, and The Moon is definitely not a country. But like. you know what I mean, right?
Anyways, moving ahead to the last few maps, these being the Arcade-exclusive maps and the future maps:

So lemme quickly recap Gothenburg and Suravasa.
Early on for Overwatch 2's initial announcements, we learned about a few new maps, including Gothenburg (an Assault map featuring Torbjorn's workshop) and a map said to take place in India (which I deduced in an earlier post was specifically Suravasa, a location from Symmetra's Stone by Stone story). We haven't seen these maps come to the game yet though, mostly because Assault was scrapped as a core game mode for Overwatch 2, and the replacement mode to adapt these maps into has yet to be revealed. They felt important to include here though, since we're aware of their existence and they're maps very clearly made to be home maps for some of the Overwatch heroes who've lacked one for the longest time.
Now for some data, which heroes and maps don't have a match?
The heroes (that have a specified nationality) without a map from the same country are Doomfist (Nigeria), Sigma (Netherlands), Baptiste (Haiti), Mercy (Switzerland), and Moira (Ireland).
Removing the heroes who have clear corresponding map for reasons besides nationality (and including dubious nationalities), the list of heroes without a map of any kind are just Sigma (unless you count Horizon Lunar Colony), Echo, Mercy, and Baptiste.
The maps without any heroes from the same country are Watchpoint: Gibraltar (Gibraltar), Rialto (Italy), Havana (Cuba), Circuit Royal (Monaco), Ilios (Greece), Oasis (Iraq), Antarctic Peninsula/Ecopoint Antarctica, Colosseo (Italy), Esperanca (Portugal), Petra (Southern Jordan), and Malevento (Italy).
Removing the maps that have a clear hero match that just isn't necessarily from the same country, the list goes down to Rialto, Havana, Circuit Royal, Ilios, Colosseo, Esperanca, Petra, and Malevento.
Soooooo yeah! If I missed something or you need clarification on something in the chats, then shoot me a reply to let me know!
...Why did I do this.

the last time i went to hollywood (or the last-last time) we saw a cassidy cosplayer but like, we couldn't be sure, but the only thing i was confident about is that they were wearing a stupidly big cowboy hat and his weird body armor so... ??? one of life's little mysteries. overwatch had released within the last 1-2 years so it was possible. anyways i don't go there very frequently because it smells like shit but also because i think about that sometimes

Maybe it’s just because I associate jack & captain America with each other but I can’t help but imagine he acts and talks like characters from old Hollywood films, his idea of swearing is saying ‘god dammit!’ He dresses really dapperly on his rare days off, definitely owns a few antique/vintage 1920s through to 50’s items. He absolutely has a classical record collection too. It changes a bit when he’s older though, he still loves old Hollywood stuff but he’s just too grizzled and angry following everything that happened with Overwatch to care about indulging in his interests anymore ~Bambi
