Western Monarch Butterflies Overwintering in California Dropped By 30% Last Year, Researchers Says

Researchers with the Xerces Society, a nonprofit environmental organization, said Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024, that volunteers who visited sites in California and Arizona around Thanksgiving tallied more than 230,000 butterflies, compared to 330,00 in 2022. San Francisco (AP) — The number of western monarch butterflies overwintering in California dropped by 30% last year, likely due to how wet it was, researchers said Tuesday.
Volunteers who visited sites in California and Arizona around Thanksgiving tallied more than 230,000 butterflies, compared to 330,000 in 2022, according to the Xerces Society, an environmental nonprofit that focuses on the conservation of invertebrates.
The population of orange and black insects has rebounded in recent years to the hundreds of thousands after it plummeted in 2020 to just 2,000 butterflies, which was a record low. But even though the butterfly bounced back, its numbers are still well below what they were in the 1980s, when monarchs numbered in the millions.
Scientists say the butterflies are at critically low levels in western states because of destruction to their milkweed habitat along their migratory route due to housing construction and the increased use of pesticides and herbicides.
Climate change is also one of the main drivers of the monarch’s threatened extinction, disrupting the butterfly’s annual 3,000-mile (4,828-kilometer) migration synched to springtime and the blossoming of wildflowers.

“Climate change is making things harder for a lot of wildlife species, and monarchs are no exception,” said Emma Pelton, a monarch conservation biologist with the Xerces Society. “We know that the severe storms seen in California last winter, the atmospheric rivers back to back, are linked at some level to our changing climate.”
Western monarchs head south from the Pacific Northwest to California each winter, returning to the same places and even the same trees, where they cluster to keep warm. They breed multiple generations along the route before reaching California, where they generally arrive at in early November. Once warmer weather arrives in March, they spread east of California.
On the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, another monarch population travels from southern Canada and the northeastern United States to central Mexico. Scientists estimate that the monarch population in the eastern U.S. has fallen by about 80% since the mid-1990s, but the drop-off in the western U.S. has been even steeper.

Horseradish!
My friend found a place to dig up horseradish, so we dug up as much as we could--which was about 4.5kg (10lbs) after cleaning!
Even after splitting it, five pounds of horseradish was a lot. I made horseradish cranberry sauce, mayonnaise, and simple prepared horseradish. I threw some peels and leftover nubs in a pickle jar to add some kick to store-bought pickles. It's a lot of horseradish! I offered some to friends--in both the prepared and raw states.
Finally, I conceded that this was more horseradish than I could readily use; and decided to try storing/growing them in a bucket of sandy soil.
We got a 5 gal utility bucket, drilled some small drainage holes, and filled it with mostly sand (it took the whole 20kg bag!) and a bit of potting soil. As an afterthought, we also picked up a bucket lid to serve as a saucer.

I give the roots just a bit of water to stay alive; but try not to "water" them as I would normal plants--I'm essentially overwintering them.
It's now been about 4 weeks and they've put out new leaves. I have mixed feelings about this: it's always exciting to see plants grow! But I'm slightly worried this means they're not overwintering and will die out before spring. We'll see how it goes!

Overwintering Geraniums
I live in Wisconsin, home of the Frozen Tundra. Last winter was brutal. Green Bay certainly lived up to its nickname of the Frozen Tundra!  Below zero temps, ice storms and it just seemed to linger.   Our plants wouldn’t survive outdoors. So, we have two choices, throw them out or bring them indoors. Time to try an overwintering method. Steps For Overwintering 1.) Remove each individual…

The first entry in The Greenhouse Diaries is posted over on the blog! In this new once a week series, we’ll be sharing our adventures of growing food and flowers in this 4’x 6’ New England greenhouse over the winter months. 🌱 Stop by the post and see what we are growing inside and learn about the 20th century writer who inspired this project. Can you guess who she is just from her photo?! . . . . . #greenhousegardening #overwintering #wintergardening #greenhousegrown #greenhouse #gardeninginspiration https://www.instagram.com/p/CltkrpbOzCY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So I had this pepper plant randomly grow on my balcony, I'm not sure if I even planted that, sometimes edible plants will grow without my intervention because seeds get lost in the soil. Anyway I didn't pay any attention to it, because it's too late to transplant it to the garden, it was growing in the middle of the summer, and I just put it next to my other plants so it would get watered.
I noticed the other day that the plant was starting to grow little fruit on it! It had tiny little peppers! They were adorable, and quite admirable because that plant had only tiny bit of soil to grow in, it was ambitious to go and try growing peppers from basically no nutrition.
Peppers can actually survive the winter if you grow them in a pot and put them inside, you can have them next spring producing peppers again! They're not gonna produce in winter when there's not enough hours of sunlight, but they can be a nice ornamental plant. So I decided, this would be the destiny of my little volounteer pepper. I moved it into a bigger pot that happened to be empty, and took off all of the tiny peppers, so the plant would focus on producing bigger roots instead. Once a plant produces seed she can call it a day and die because she fulfilled her purpose. If you take seeds/fruits away, she will re-evaluate her situation and try growing bigger. That's what I want!

See this little grey plastic pot I'm holding, that's where the plant managed to grow to this size and grow fruit. I think that shows a level of stubbornness and resilience I'm looking for in a plant. This is going to be my pet pepper growing in my kitchen during the winter and hopefully, possibly, she might give me peppers early in the spring.

the thing about voyager is that you can justify shipping any combination of characters by pointing out that they were all stuck on that ship for seven years completely removed from social norms so it probably happened at some point

It begins.
Got the pepper and eggplant seeds in their sprouting bags (zip lock baggies with moist paper towels) and got the heading cabbages (4 varieties) and 2 lettuces planted in cells for later transplant this week.
I really like the sprouting method--it's simple, you can see which seeds are duds, and can plant one viable seed per cell without wondering if they're failing to germinate for a wide variety of reasons. I've been much more successful with certain types of seeds this way.

Name ideas for this impossible to photograph creature? (my current goldies are Wiffle Ball, Tennis Racket, and Birdie if anyone has any ideas on how to continue that theme lol)
Also while we're here look at this fucking unit of a pond snail I pulled out of the 40g when I moved the big goldies to their summer pond
