The Quality of Her Wriggles
It was not a good time to bring a litter into the world. Leafbare was unforgiving this season, and as he looked at the dwindling remains of the freshkill pile, Owlheart wished they could have somehow waited till greenleaf. Greenleaf… the warrior’s mind dwindled, imagining the sprouts wiggling through the reeds, imagining the sunlight on the rocks in the camp, imagining the nursery safe and lined with fresh bedding and wet moss. His tired paws and cold snow ridden limbs trembled at the memory. But I guess leafbare is how starclan fated it, and in leafbare the kits would be raised. Owlheart grabbed a fish from the freshkill pile, and headed over to the nursery, resigning that the most he could do was pray the kits would inherit his thick coat.
His leader disagreed with him. Willowstar had seemed overjoyed that Reedfeather had kitted so soon.
Her mind was in the far future, thinking of the rising tensions with Thunderclan, apprentices and warriors who inherited her deputy’s size instead of coat, who inherited her deputy’s strength, her deputy’s wisdom in battle. But before they could become warriors they would have to survive being kits, he had snapped at her. They seemed so small… so fragile, he thought as he looked over the three resting bodies at his mates belly, watching their little chests rise and fall. Owlheart padded over to his mate and gently nudged with his head.
“Reedfeather, eat” he suggested.
The she-cat’s eyes snapped open, and she turned over to the thrush.
“Have they been getting enough milk?” he asked as his mate started to devour the prey.
“Relax, worryheart” Reedfeather teased in between bites. “They do nothing but nurse” she reassured.
“The she-cat is so little…” Owlheart commented, laying down and giving the smallest of the kits a lick.
“Don’t worry about it” pipped another of the queens, stretching. “Reedfeather was that size when she was little, the other two are just big…”
“We could call her tinykit…” Owlheart suggested, resting his head on Reedfeather.
“Oh, I came up with names this morning!” she piped up, sitting up a bit.
“It’s about time!” Said Flowerclaw, the other queen, turning over towards the couple curiously. “I name all my kits within the first hour…”
“The gray and white one is fogkit” Reedfeather continued proudly. “The she-cat maggotkit. And the white one moonkit.”
Flowerclaw raised an eyebrow. “Well I guess we all know which one you like the least…”
“Don’t be silly, '' Reedfeather scolded. “I named her maggotkit for the quality of her wriggles!” She explained, gently prodding the kit demonstratively, who did indeed wriggle.
Owlheart let out a mrow of laughter. “Reedfeather the apprentices will bully her…'' he warned. Well accustomed to his lover's eccentricities, but worried all the same.
“No they won't,” She said confidently. “She’ll be too busy leaving them in the dust.”
“After tussling with brothers like these, absolutely.” said Owlheart. “Moonkit looks like his father” Owlheart continued, proudly, looking down at him. They had the same coat, although moonkit’s white and his gray. “And fogkit is already dreaming of hunting” he commented, watching the kits limbs twitch in his sleep. “Who do you think their mentors will be?”
“Oh, I’m hoping Skybristle” Reedfeather commented, thinking fondly of her she-cat bestie. “And maybe Oakeyes… do you think Willowstar wi-” The queen paused, following her husband’s gaze, which had shifted to the front of the den. The shadow of a large cat had cast a darkness across the already dim hollow, light reflecting in the giant maine-coons yellow, staring eyes.
“Do you need something Hillpelt?” Reedfeather asked, tense.
Hillpelt stared for a second, the light of the outside snow illuminating his tattered black fur.
“No” he decided, before turning to leave.
There was a moment of silence in the nursery, cold and uncomfortable. The queens stared at where the cat had stood. Owlheart looked between them for a moment, before decisively trying to break the awkward silence.
“Well, maybe Hillpelt thinks one of them has the makings for a medicine cat” He joked.
Reedfeather let out a nervous laugh.
“Don’t say that dear, I know Hillpelt’s old but he’s so....” She exchanged a glance with Flowerclaw. “...creepy. I don’t want my kits in there with him all day” She said, curling her tail around them protectively.
“He’s a medicine cat, he couldn’t kill them if he wanted to,” Owlheart reassured. “Unless he accidentally sat on one.” Reedfeather snorted. “Besides” he reminded her like a good deputy “It would be an honor to have one of my kin serve as medicine cat in my clan”
“I suppose” Reedfeather said, relaxing as she warmed up to the idea, looking down at her two male kits “Maybe he’d treat us extra nice whenever we were sick”
“Oh, I thought he was looking at Maggotkit” Owlheart commented. “Doesn’t she look smart enough to memorize herbs?”
“She’s got a warrior’s spirit,” Reedfeather said, offended. “you can’t confine her to the medicine den”
“That’s not what i… she’s just so tiny,” Owlheart defended.
Flowerclaw snorted. “Tiny enough to crawl into your den and claw your ears off! I’ve been watching them play, the two boys just fool around”
“Alright, alright, I'll take it back” Owlheart chuckled. “Fogkit can become a medicine cat. Moonkit can become a warrior, and when I'm the leader, I’ll make Maggotkit deputy.”
“That’s more like it” Said Reedfeather, gazing into her mates eyes fondly.
“Are you two warm enough in here?” Owlheart asked.
“Yes,” said Reedfeather. “But could you ask Redpaw to bring us some fresh moss once she’s back from border patrol?”
“Of course,” Owlheart said, untangling himself from her and standing up, stretching, hoping his apprentice would be up to it after all the extra hunting they’d been doing. “If you need anything, just ask-”
“We’re fine, Owlheart” Reedfeather reassured. “Go help lead the clan.”
“Okay, okay” The tom-cat said as he backed backwards out of the den, back into the slow falling snow. “Stay safe” He said, before walking back over towards the leader's den.
He glanced to the side into the medicine den as he passed, and watched the giant cat within pace back and forth with minor unease.
The kits did not share their fathers concerns. They were thrilled to have been born in leafbare- as time passed on, they found the snowflakes perfect targets for pretend hunting, amused by the shapes their little paws left in the snow, and always happy to return to their mothers warm pelt after a long day. Just-opened kit’s eyes didn't wander to the dwindling fresh kill pile, didn’t see the ache in their fathers feet as he came to visit everyday. They were preoccupied with each other. A moon passed- or two, or three, and the cold relented.
“There there” Moonkit said to his sister, reaching forward to pat Maggotkit’s paw, which their mother had just successfully pulled a thorn out of.
“Did you see that??” he said to the adults. “I’m going to be a medicine cat.” The kitten declared.
“NO, me!” Fogkit exclaimed, tripping over his brother to lick Maggotkit’s wound. “By the power of starclan” he spoke over his yowling trampled brother, dramatically. “You are healed.”
“You can’t be a medicine cat if you KILL me” Moonkit said yelped dramatically, shoving Fogkit off of him.
Maggotkit finally got up, limping past her brothers. “Mom should be a medicine cat,” she said. “She did everything…”
“Moms already a warrior” Fogkit explained. “Mousebrain” His sister stuck out her tongue at him.
“You're both mousebrains” Moonkit huffed. “You were ruining my procedure” he accused.
“With how grumpy you are Moonkit, they won't make you a medicine cat” Maggotkit teased. “They’ll send you right to the elders den with all the other old farts!”
“Maggotkit!” Reedfeather piped up. “We respect our elders”
“Right” the kit said, shuffling back and staring at her paws. “But he was being mean!”
“Bop him on the nose for me then” Reedfeather advised, turning back over to groom herself. “But don't make fun of Cloudleap and Halfpaw…”
Maggotkit giggled, swatting her brother on the nose and then running off.

Decided to translate some of my warrior cats OCs names into clanmew!
Owlheart- Weearbabun (barn owl-heart). Named after the barn owl (weear) and given the heart suffix (babun).
Deerhop- Niaaluara (female fallow deer-jump). Named after the fallow doe (Niaa). There is no direct translation for hop, so I picked the closest thing, jump (luara). The idea of the name is that hopping run you see deer do, so ultimately i think luara is more fitting than any of the other running words, or leap.
Oakblossom- Byochpeske (oak-clusters of tiny flowers). Byoch was an easy translation, but I had to think about what I wanted blossom to translate to. But I wanted the imagery of a flowering Oak tree, and I think that the clusters of flowers is more fitting.
Servalsnap- Eebsaorgnam(small-leopard-will bite). I had to improvise here a little since clanmew has no word for serval, but servals do look somewhat like smaller leopards so that's what I went with. I translated snap to bite, since I felt that that more closely mirrored the character. I used the future tense of bite so that the name feels more like a warning. this car Will Bite You. Funnily enough, his mother's name is actually Leopardbite.
Hazeldove- Anshuwoohoo (hazel tree-song of wood pigeon). Hazel was a pretty direct translation, but dove was a more deliberate choice. Since her suffix is supposed to indicate a peaceful/kind personality, plus how she's generally a talkative character, I think that connecting her to the song of the dove specifically makes for a stronger meaning than a direct translation.
Crocusclaw- Palifuhponmakarrurrsk (purple-flower-sharpen claws). No word for crocus, so I just described it as a purple (palifuh) flower (ponma). Ae was named for aer determination and constant work towards sharpening aer skills, so karrurrsk (sharpening one's claws), to convey that meaning over the direct translation of kach.
Ferntail- Namarswash (lady fern-tail). Pretty easy translation here.
Skuaroot- Swosyassgaprryem (water-raptor-stem). I had somewhat of a hard time with this one. With no word for skua, I went back and forth on this one. Do I use pre-existing water birds to describe it? But would clan cats even make that connection? Ultimately I just went with water raptor, since the skua is a predatory seabird. Water over sea since the clans would probably associate it more with water than with the sea specifically. Root, with no direct translation, became stem, mostly because that was the closest thing.
Covecrash- Bponbssupragapblalm (boulder-land next to shore-strong-wave). With no direct translation to cove, the closest thing was the imagery of a rocky land next to the shore. With the name Covecrash I wanted the imagery of waves crashing into a cove, so I decided to use strong wave to keep that imagery.
Rillrose- Eebyawshaqanka (small-brook-dog rose). No direct translation for rill, but a rill is pretty small, so... small brook! Also, she is the reincarnation of a cat named Brookshine, and I liked the idea of tying Rillrose's name to brooks specifically rather than streams. Rose could be translated into a few different things, but I chose the dog rose.
Peachblaze- Kawubekaprawswarfyf (fuzzy-pink-fruit-spread of fire). No translation for peach, so I chose some descriptors. Spread of fire feels like the best translation for blaze here.
I.... went further down the clanmew rabbit hole than I expected. Probably expect some more asks from me about clanmew translations because I am not done.
I adore how sticky Clanmew is, people will dip in like, "I think I will translate just one OC" and then find out that they want to create their own entire dialect so that they can PERFECTLY capture the meaning of their cat's name
Seems like you're set up in some sort of very far north coastal area if you've got Skua hanging out! I'd say absolutely feel free to go and make translations for that. Clan cats like to name animals based on the sounds they make. So, for example, the Canadian Goose is a RONK, a Herring Gull is EEYAR.
Same with Peach, Cove, and Crocus, those won't be showing up in Base Clanmew! That said, Clan cats like to make new words through contraction. So using your word for Peach as an example-- "Kawubekapraw," KAwuBEkaPRaw, Kabepr. Or any other way your Clan cats like to shorten things!
For Deerhop, you could also do "bounce" if you'd like. That perfectly describes the hoppy running movement of deer. Niaapipip, "Fallow Doe Bouncing"
And for Rill... just as a side note, man, just when I feel like I've gotten all the little words for types of water down, I find more. I think I've shown PARTS of this little chart I made, but I'm gonna show some "Concept Art" I made for @troutfur a while ago of various water-related terms lmao
At some point, I really want to do a big thing on "River Words" specifically. Types of streams, definitions, things within the river, how fishing works and every fish you find in this area, describe a riffle...
But anyway, with all that said, here's some more base words for you;
Cave = Ken
A rocky, naturally occurring hole a cat can enter. The basis of the word "Kenkin," which means 'Den.' At the Lake, some cats insult ThunderClan by calling them 'cave-sleepers' since they live in a rocky quarry.
Rill/Beck/Rundle/Tiny ass stream = Siln
A stream that is so small that you can just step over it. There's an old addage: "You step over a brook, jump over a creek, wade through a stream and swim through a river." In Clanmew, a Brook/Yawsha and a Creek/Koshu are jumped over. The Siln is stepped across.
Syke = Mawss
Seasonally flooding streams, like the one that existed in the Forest territory that almost killed Fireheart in TPB. That ravine is dry during winter.
Root = Pehur
Translates directly
