I don't think we talk about or appreciate enough how earnest and just genuine nice ava is. Like she could, and it would be rightfully earned, be very bitter and hateful. But she's just so sweet and kind and caring. Like yes she's a handful but not in a way where she's actively a mean person.

When she corrects herself with mother superion in s1. Genuinely feeling bad about Lilith despite the fact Lilith seemed to only want her dead. Always quick with an apology(even for silly little things like over pouring the shot) and you can see she Genuinely leans everyone of them

You're absolutely right, Ava is a sweetheart, but I do think a lot of that comes from her time spent with the nuns after her accident. Like you can tell that Sister Frances in particular made Ava feel like a burden, like she was a weight on her and the whole world. So I think a lot of Ava's guilt is her not wanting to be trouble.

Which sounds odd considering how much trouble she was in season 1 after she first got the halo but I think a lot of that was her running from the idea of being anything to anyone again. A big reason I think she connected with JC and his people is the anonymity of it all. They would drop into a home that wasn't there's, a party they weren't invited to and they could just exist and live without the worry of disappointing or upsetting anyone.

Of course, Ava's desire to find love and family and joy was too strong and eventually she ended up with people like that, and as you mentioned with Mother Superion and Lilith and her correcting herself and her guilt, she has this ingrained fear of being 'too much' for other people because of the abuse Sister Frances put her through for so long.

Like after her halo goes off in season 2 and Beatrice yells at her, there is genuine fear and pain in Ava because she's so afraid she's become too much for Bea and that Beatrice will have enough of her and see her the way Sister Frances did. Of course, that didn't happen because first of all, she's doing her best and really didn't do anything wrong, and secondly Bea is Bea and she knows that and she adores Ava immensely.

So when Ava apologizes to Bea, and then Bea apologizes back to her, it really is, I think, the first time Ava had that feeling of being too much and the other person said "no, you're you, just you, and i'm not giving up on you because it's hard". When that happens, the MAJOR crush Ava absolutely had turns up 100x and she's devoted, enamored, in deep deep love with Bea for that life, and all the rest.

- i know that morse is looking up to examine the cork board but i’m like 98% sure he’s looking up to examine jakes

What are dead man walking tornadoes? :O

it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”

the most infamous shot of a dead man walking tornado hit jarrell, texas in 1997

it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)

two more examples of dead man walking tornadoes looking like a person are a tornado from 2011 that hit cullman, alabama

and a tornado from 1975 that hit xenia, ohio

not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.

don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.

if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.

you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:

how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
