Barnacles likes accordion of course, so he'd probably enjoy anything that incorporates it. I can see him liking most genres tbh, he's not super picky—but he definitely likes folk and classical, and he LOVES sea shanties—almost more than Kwazii 👀

Dashi listens to nightcore. She also got Peso into it. Honestly I feel like the two of them are both into pretty much anything—Dashi has a preference for pop, and Peso definitely likes symphonies, ballads, and anything that's chill and lofi.

Dashi also listens to hard rock and heavy metal in her spare time, and it disorients the heck out of whoever witnesses it randomly come on in her shuffled playlists. It implies let me keep your tears, your pain filled eyes kissed against my lips. Or let me keep your tears (in a cherishing way).

Man maatam aur zindaa hai yeh ishq re.

"My heart is mourning/grieving and (my) love is alive."

The word maatam usually implies mourning for the dead but in this context, I see it as the heart mourning for the death of the love between them as it was before. But the love of his life is still alive, and the memory of (their) love will always be present.

OOOH I LOVE THIS QUESTION

Paani likes to teach Kwazii about recipes he knows and Kwazii goes "looks easy enough" but then proceeds to fail. Paani does not laugh at him for that and patiently teaches him how to properly cook that specific recipe

Kwazii has once introduced Paani to the video games that Tweak plays and Kwazii tells him that "it's alright to be bad at it first time," then proceeds to lose every match with Paani. Paani ends up teaching Kwazii the strategies instead

They both like to invite each other with water-related activities and Kwazii has invited Paani once to drive one of the gups underwater. When a novice driver takes a gup, it usually doesn't end well. And it didn't. So, Kwazii starts another driving lesson

They both like to show each other's collections: Kwazii's treasure chest and Paani's water sample collection

They like to exchange stories when they're not busy saving animals or researching. Paani has once been in that table in the Octopod (where the members just huddle around and talk about what happened on their missions) and talked about his adventures. Kwazii usually chimes in with "was it a sea monster?!"

Paani does not ridicule Kwazii when his theories are far-fetched. He doesn't say stuff like "you don't actually believe that, do you?" Instead, he innocently corrects him. But, he does get stressed at times when Kwazii doesn't listen. (Much like how Kwazii gets stressed when Paani doesn't listen LMAO)

There's definitely a one time that Paani has called Kwazii on his Octo-Watch in the middle of the night just to show him a critter he found or something strange going on with the water levels. This often leads to Kwazii groggily answering with half-lidded eyes and ends up sleeping on call while Paani's still talking

The two of them don't intentionally cause chaos. They're really just chaos magnets that Captain Barnacles sometimes has to make one of the Octonauts accompany them just to ensure things don't go out of hand (like in the giant weta episode)

They mention each other even if they're not together. Kwazii would be like "If Paani were here, he'd be tellin' us what salinity this lake has!" and Paani would be "Now, what would Kwazii do in this situation?"

They like to show each other the pictures they took during their missions

Paani is knowledgeable with a LOT of things and info-dumps them on Kwazii. Kwazii often reacts like what he does with Tracker but instead of "you've got your nose on that book, again?" He says "you've got your tail on that sample, again?"

Kwazii has offered to teach Paani how to swordfight in his room but Captain Barnacles, knowing how well that would go, tries to stop them from breaking Kwazii's shelves

They're both pretty good singers but Kwazii just hears Paani hum bird songs

Kwazii has once tried to have friendly rivalry with Paani like he had with Cap Barnacles but Paani doesn't pick up on this and ends up just saying "Okay, you go first," intead of saying "No. I'll go first," like what Kwazii expects him to say

There was definitely a time that they unintentionally mirrored each other's actions and they freaked themselves out when they realized it

Paani: "Well, I'll be my own uncle." Kwazii: "That's usually my line."

Try list any Octo-Agents and think of an Episode you Think give them a Shining Moment

W O O F this took a while– I was thinking long and hard about this because there are SO MANY good moments and episodes 😅, and so many agents– it was difficult, but I’m happy with my answers 👀

Ranger Marsh’s Shine Episode is definitely The Monitor Lizards. I LOVE this episode, it’s one of my favourites in the whole series so far—not just because of the events in it, but as a concept. I LOVE the callback to the Great Swamp Search!! I watched the 2nd season blind, and seeing all these familiar faces was SUCH a fun surprise. It’s good for Ranger Marsh as a character, because it actually shows him doing his job as a Ranger, not as an Octo-Agent. It also reinforces the fact that he truly cares for and is friends with these creatures, even if they are invasive, and that he's willing to travel to check in on them. This is another episode that also proves (to me) that the writers know they’re dealing with an older audience for the show, and are more likely to delve into solid lore and continuity. This episode makes me really hopeful for more of that.

Natquik’s Shine Episode, WITHOUT QUESTION, is The Red Fox. Honestly I feel like I don’t need to explain why, but I will because I like talking ✨: Natquik is my favourite Octo-Agent, but overall we haven’t actually gotten that many episodes dedicated to him yet. The Red Fox gives us a close and personal look into what Natquik is like by himself (I love episodes where characters are alone 👀), how he deals with problems (by ignoring them until they get worse—which is interesting... *stares at Barnacles*...), and even hints toward his family, by showing us his family portraits, and leaving us wondering, “Where are they?” – There are so many moments I love in this episode, from when he first discovers the kits, decides to help them stay warm, rushes to protect Barnacles, to his bittersweet goodbye at the end. It’s all so perfect.

Tracker absolutely shines in The Missing Lake. Honestly, he shines a LOT in Above and Beyond, considering he never got his own episode in the main series, and was only in Operation Deep Freeze for two scenes. AnB has been really good to Tracker, and I’m so grateful they decided to make him an Agent. The Missing Lake sticks out to me the most, because for the most part he is by himself (and I’ve already mentioned my love for that <3), and unlike all his other episodes, we get to really see him be responsible and use his Polar Scout skills in action. He’s often portrayed as a follower, who just goes along with whatever he's told to do, but he takes charge twice in this episode: when he offers to help Rowan, and when he stays behind to save Buck. Love that for him.

Calico Jack. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Calico Jack....... I could talk forever about this funky old cat man. He doesn’t just shine, he GLOWS in every episode he’s in—but alas, for the sake of this post I will be focusing on The Harlequin Duck. I love the showing of his gentle parental instincts in this episode, and his singing; since we know he canonically has a theme song, that I headcanon he wrote himself. I think far too much, and often, about how he legit panicked when he realized the egg was missing. How his first instinct was to hide that fact from Captain Barnacles. He was terrified, having a full blown panic attack on screen. He apologizes to the mother duck with such genuine solace, and promises to get it back “On [his] honour as a pirate!” ...Which is extremely significant to me, considering Kwazii was the first character to EVER say the phrase: “On me honour as an Octonaut!” in The Flying Fish after Inkling’s book was lost – and of course as a final touch, I adore seeing him work with Pete to get the egg back. The way he tosses the egg in the air, fully trusting that Pete will catch it... they’re so in sync, just as pirate and parrot are meant to be ;)

Paani... I feel like there’s so much more to him than what we’ve seen so far, it almost feels unfair to assign him a “Shine Episode”. So, instead of highlighting a single episode, I’ll quickly talk about three that stick out (PS: you might sense a theme 🤣):

The Barnacle Geese - Uncle Paani. I like the “I’ll be my own uncle” joke, and the Edgar Allen Poe reference. I think Paani’s determination to help the chick (who doesn’t seem to want help) is nice to watch, and helps to prove his worthiness as an Agent—which is always fun considering his hesitance when Barnacles tried to recruit him in S1E1. In a way, this episode also makes Paani seem more like Barnacles. See my old post analyzing the show’s intro. (*Stares at the episode title* 👁️👁️)

The Arabian Camels - Take a shot of cocoa every time I mention my love for episodes where characters are forced to be by themselves. This one is especially interesting to me though, because we know that Paani was alone, for a very long time, before he met the Octonauts. He has no trouble working and getting by alone, and we get to see him exhibiting that, while being out of his element (a dry desert) at the same time; and that’s really cool.

The Lonely Frog - ...Y’know how they constantly make the Octonauts/Agents meet creatures with similar issues to them? Yeah. *Stares at the episode title.* *Stares at the end scene where he says “Kinda like when I met you guys!” before obnoxiously jumping into the lake, in response to Shellington+Peso saying “They never even knew each other existed before! [...] and now it’s like they’ve known each other all their lives!”* *STARES MORE AT THE EPISODE TITLE,,* *wonders how long Paani was actually alone before becoming an Agent...*

Pinto, where art thou? He wasn’t in S2 at all, which was a bit disappointing since we just saw him get an Octowatch in S1. I would’ve expected him to be pressing that button every chance he got, giving us a “Penguin who cried Octoalert” episode. But anyway,, The Curious Penguin is the PERFECT episode for Pinto. It shows his personality really well, and I love how his distractions and the things he learns and discovers help him to save the day in the end. I think Pinto (just like Kwazii) is a good portrayal of ADHD, and how he just needs to be in the right environment to succeed. Each time Pinto messes up or loses focus, isn’t because he was left alone and couldn’t be trusted—it’s because he was left alone and understimulated. So when he’s thrown into a sudden high-stakes situation, all of his focus hones in on the moment, and he’s able to save Dashi and Paani by himself.

AND, because you didn’t say it had to be an Above and Beyond moment, I want to throw some love at The Oarfish episode from the main series. In this episode, Pinto no longer views Peso as “less” than an Octonaut, and is so excited to watch him do his job—it’s really cute!! His impulsivity is once again a positive thing—granted, it seems to annoy Peso a little, but when you think about it he kinda saved the day by being impulsive. He sounded the Octoalert without permission, which let the captain know to come back before their radio signal cut out, and by being unafraid of the “monster” and swimming outside, he was able to discover what the problem was so that Peso could help. He did good.

Pearl.... I love Pearl a lot, but I can’t think of one specific episode that comes to mind for her. I love The Pupfish because it introduces Peri to AnB, and I love how he teaches her how to tie a knot, so she can save the algae (and Glen). I like The Bison episode because it’s interesting watching her not doing something with algae for once, and The Pink Glacier because her and Kwazii’s dynamic was something I didn’t know I needed, but now I want more of (/p).

Ryla. Possibly controversial opinion: I liked Ryla in The Caves of Sac Actun, more than I like her now in Above and Beyond. I know she’s only gotten 3 episodes so far, but she’s really missing something. Sac Actun gave us lore on her right off the bat: she’s old friends with Dashi, she’s a skilled cave explorer, she’s spunky, she’s purple. AnB hasn’t given us much yet. So far her only shtick is caves, and that’s getting a bit repetitive. Consider every moment she has in Sac Actun as her “Shining Moment”, because honestly that whole movie is a 10/10.

Koshi,,,, she hasn't gotten that much yet, but I'm gonna say The Longfin Eels is her Shine Episode. I like the way she narrates the whole episode, because it's very in-character. Plus we know she’s literally writing about this adventure in her diary as she's telling it, as if it were a mystery book. She reminds me of narrators from 1920s film noirs, and that’s cool. Also! Honorary mention of the scene when she gets her Octowatch: I loved that for her <3

Min is below the cut, because my answer for her includes some very heavy SEASON 5 SPOILERS, including SCREENSHOTS:

All of Min's appearances so far are dear to my heart. However, my favourite has to be her own introductory episode: The Giant Chinese Salamander.

The Rainforest Rescue is another amazing episode for Min—she’s a wonderful character on her own, of course—but I think we can all agree that she and Inkling are very adorable together (no matter how you interpret their relationship).

When Above and Beyond aired on Netflix, there was a lot of confusion around Min, from the younger audience and other fans who hadn’t seen S5. The Giant Chinese Salamander introduces Min with a 20-minute special; showing her in high-stakes action with Kwazii, bonding with the Octonauts, being an all-around Cool Person™, and a flashback of how she met Inkling when they were younger.

She saved his life. He was thrown far inland by a rough storm, and was trapped until she found him. I honestly headcanon that Min partially (if not outright) inspired Inkling to form the Octonauts, and this moment could have literally sealed the fate of EVERYTHING we know.

Today I walked through the alleys of my hometown. I wanted to have a particular type of biscuits and not the ones which were available in the Kitchen. Thus I walked down to this small shop located a few steps away from my house. But the shop was closed. I was going to return back but then the Aajis who sit in the temple, singing their bhajan, called me. Its been a while since I talked to them. The Temple has changed a lot, they renovated it when I was in 12th grade but I was too busy back then preparing for CLAT, studying for boards that I never sat in the renovated temple. The temple was never a religious place for me you know, rather it was a Sunday picnic spot. A dongar-ka-paani, khaamb khaamb, kaanda phod, lappa chappi, mini lingorcha, playground. It was the place where I used to wait for my Rickshaw at 6:30 am on the wintry mornings, wear saree draped out of a chunri and get married to that one boy whose name I have forgotten, do the Taewondo thingy and spread rumors that I have enough power and skill to kill everybody in the town.

It was the place where I ate the offerrings offered to the deities and never felt bad. I talked to those idols while the Dogs barked and Sun took time to rise, I played with religion while the elders prayed (sometimes begged) their hearts out to that black, adorable tortoise. I was obsessed with the Temple's bell you know, was way too short, thus couldnt ring it with my bare hands. But I had found a stick of perfect length using which, the little Sau used to play with the bell while singing songs ranging from Chikni Chameli to Jana Gana Mana (Indeed, all with beautifully distorted lyrics). I am obsessed with flowers ever since I was a child. On weekends, waking up, collecting flowers from the nooks and corners of Sandesh colony, and making a gajra, and two maalas - one for the Saibaba at home and one for all the gods in the temple, was an integral part of my life. The 19 year old Sau says, she is non-religious, the 9 year old didnt know what does religious actually mean, but both of them would wholly agree to the fact that, some way or the other they both subscribe to the religion of flowers. Sometimes, when I liked the flowers that were offered to the Idols, I used to do a trade-off. I would keep my ordinary flower with them and take their rose or sonchafa or pink hibiscus. When anyone would scold me for doing it, I would, quite emohatically say, say, that, "Its between me and god." (Actually, that was the answer that Mumma told me to give to the hecklers. She has always been the best, I know)

Today, with anxiety medicines awaiting me in my pencil box, I thought to myself, " Ohh what an irreplaceable entity this temple has been!" After talking to those Aajis, I changed my mind and walked a few more steps to buy "Top biscuits." I was wearing a woollen knitted sweater and capri night pant, a kind of costume which I would never go out in, anywhere else on the face of earth. I have been wearing that pant ever since I was in tenth grade. I studied for boards, CLAT and now IPC in the very same piece of cloth. Sometimes I seriously wonder, have I stopped growing or what? Is tgis what "stagnancy" feel like. What if I am stuck in a puddle and now, unaware, unconcious, I have made it my world. But then, I this Uncle, who had pulled me up while I had fallen down while driving my purple scooty pept for the first time in my life, which gave me a smidgen of hope that I can at least drive a scooty without falling down forty times in a ride. I convinced myself that I am growing, slower than a balloon maybe, or ecen a cloud, but yes not stagnant yet.

While walking down that street, I could vividly see my childhood running like an animated movie infront of my eyes. Ohh I was a ruckus, a commotion back then. What all did I not do. All the streets, all the corners of those streets, all the houses on those streets and all the people who lived in those houses, knew my name. They kind of hated me. Not their fault, I was an unbearably notorious, an intractable child. How streets change, I thought. The place where there was a cherry tree, now holds within its bosom a two storeyed bunglow. I wondered, does that piece of land ever miss that Tree? Does it remember that I used to spend so much time finding a "good cherry" back in my salad days? I am a self-absorbed person, I thought. Does that land like that Bunglow? If given a choice, what would the land pick: Cherry tree or the Bunglow?

My biscuit excursion made me wonder, how arcane yet how simple it is that, no matter what, nobody stops. Actually, no body can afford to stop. Everyone is evolving, everyone has to evolve, evolution is not a choice. The choice to stay the same is also a kind of an evolution, if you think about it. Even the streets, even the electricity poles, everything had changed. Not holistically, of course (I mean they havent started painting it saffron as of now, might happen very soon but yeah), still everything bore a tinge of change to itself. I noticed how have repainted the "Danger" sign on the main electricity pole. While walking down from Tuition, I used to reread that "Khatra" written below a skull and two bones, everyday. I learned to read the term "Khatra" from that poll only. The cornermost flat, on the ground floor, of Chaitanya Apartments has made a compound, have installed a gate you know. It made me wonder, now where would all the street dogs sleep on the hot, sweltering afternoons. They even rebuilt the half-broken edges of the public waste bin on the way to my Tuition.

All that I observed, all that my approximately blind eyes could point out, stirred something inside. I was seeing something beyond those physical structures. All the abstractness that came back to me, while I walked down a half-dug, non-concerete, uneven rocky street, was not memories, neither nostalgia; rather it was a realization. Realization, that how, stopping and staring is possibly the most important thing to do, perhaps more important than inhaling and exhaling the polluted air, that a life is a wasted life where one didnt stop and aimlessly stared.

Music Headcanons

-Octonauts-

Barnacles: It’s canon he listens to Nicki Minaj (imagining someone like Barnacles listening to songs like “Anaconda” is so strange XD), but I feel he also listens to Fin Argus, and at times, Poor Man’s Poison. Oh, and he probably listens to Megan Thee Stallion songs, just saying. He also enjoys the musical Little Shop of Horrors (the song “Feed Me (Git it!)”) Kwazzi: Sea Shanties, and maybe some of the songs made by Miracleofsound (on YouTube). I also feel like he’d listen to vocal covers of most viking songs, more specifically, covers and songs by Peyton Parrish. But, when they’re not listening to that, it’s likely songs by Disturbed and Starkid musicals.

Peso: Mainly Spanish songs that he had grown up with (listened to Despacito once and died inside). I would also say he listens to generic pop songs, maybe older Justin Bieber songs- not for the lyrics, just to listen to the background music. And he probably likes songs that have xylophone solos.

Shellington: The Crane Wives all the way (loves the instrumentals and their voices), he also enjoys bands like Gang of Youths, and creators like J. Maya, and Gareth Fernandez. But, he also enjoys songs from some musicals (including 1776; The New Musical [his favorite being “He Plays the Violin”]).

Dashi: Also listens to Nicki Minaj (mainly with Barnacles). She also listens to Lizzo (Truth Hurts and About Damn Time is some of her favorites), Adelle (solely because of the memes), and Cody Fry (she enjoys the orchestra compositions of most their songs). But they also enjoy songs from Adventure Time and Steven Universe.

Inkling: Classical all the way. He is a very novelty person, so I can see him being fond of Mozart, Beethoven, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (composer of Swan Lake), Bach, and Chopin.

Tweak: She loves heavy metal bands. She prefers Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, and Pantera. And maybe some other rock bands like AC/DC (Hell’s Bells, Back in Black, and Thunderstruck), Disturbed, and Skillet. She also likes older country songs (probably Josh Turner and Luke Bryan). Oh! And Taylor Swift.

Vegimals: They don’t have preferred bands, they like A cappella.

Calico Jack: Sea Shanties that he made up and sang to himself (literally forgets now that he can’t look them up because he made them).

Ranger Marsh: Country. Like along the lines of old country classics, but he also listens to Pantera, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and AC/DC (and he had introduced Tweak to the bands when she was little). He enjoys Poor Man’s Poison (after Barnacles introduced the band to him).

Paani: He loves Minecraft Music (in the game and fan-made parodies/original songs). His favorite disc in-game is Otherside, his favorite Minecraft song artist is Captain Sparkles (though a close second would be SlamACow), his favorite song by Captain Sparkles is Take Back the Night. Oh- and he likes Animaniacs songs.

Ryla: Not a huge music fan, prefers to listen to natural ambience (rain, birds, and wind). 

Min: Cavetown songs are some of her favorites, as well as mxmtoon. Softer songs with nice background music. She may also like The Crane Wives (she’ll listen to them when hanging out with Shellington). 

Natquik: Classical. Songs that have vocal points distract him a lot, and he can’t really get much done. He enjoys songs from Beethoven, Debussy, and Vivaldi.

Tracker: Whatever is playing on the radio. They have no music taste whatsoever, but they have memorized various generic pop songs that are played on the radio.

Pearl: She likes songs from Disney Movies, and songs like: “Tamino” by Persephone. “Touch The Sky” from Disney’s Merida is her favorite (she relates to it a lot).

He is genderfluid (he/they/she) and demidemi.

she’s a metal head. (I’m sorry) She loves heavy guitar music.

They watch Gilmore Girls with Kwazii.

He’s really good at voice acting. like he can do extremely girly voice. With lots of scoffing.

They can sing. They dramatically sing mr. Brightside in the shower

them and Kwazii are like that one “relationship dynamic” meme with the pretty fancy pajama dress and nightshirt guy.

She always keeps a frying pan on hand. You’ll never knew when you’ll need one.

He likes those tangle fidget toy things.

He likes candles. Especially pumpkin or mango scented ones.

They use mango body wash and they use old spice wolfthorn deodorant.

They love comic books (and a little to much)

She likes toast (with extra peanut butter and bananas)

His least favorite show is Extra (literally only because he finds the “extra extra” thing annoying )

They’re a guitarist.

they play the entirety of Radiohead’s “okay computer” album on repeat.

they are very fashionable. They tend to take inspiration from y2k, 90s, 80s fashion a lot though.

she writes songs sometimes, even if she doesn’t think they’re that good.

she’s like “gender norms? what’s that?” he uses his ability to voice act to his advantage sometimes.

he’s crafty. he likes making patches for his clothes.
