Rooster skull with its comb. The skull was beetle cleaned, degreased, and whitened with peroxide. The sclerotic rings were glued in place. The comb was formalin fixed and dried, then glued in place. A super cool specimen done for a good friend ❤️

Just learned that Major Mike Sadler died last week on the 4th at 103 years of age. He was the last surviving founding member of the SAS and the last survivor of the Long Range Desert Group. Rest In Peace, legendary sir.

Many of you may have been introduced to his story through Stephen Knight’s SAS: Rogue Heroes

aang is such a good protagonist, and obviously upbeat character + sad backstory isn’t a new archetype whatsoever but to have a pacifist main character — one who fights for his values and beliefs to be taken seriously, especially in the midst of a war he's expected to end — is just so intriguing. aang's character arc within atla is one of my favourites, actually! it's less dramatic than, say, zuko's or katara's, but watching him go from a silly kid running from his responsibilities to someone who maintains his optimism and kindness while embracing his commitments as the avatar is very endearing :)

Worst atla criticism is “aang should’ve killed ozai and his pacifism is preachy” he’s 12 and the protagonist in a show made for 12 year olds. What are you talking about

I’m in an Octopod type mood so here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The official spirit design! And also what it would roughly look like in some sort of transformers situation. lmao
Here’s what the spirit looked like in life/before inhabiting the ship

Pretty !
And now. Doodles that get progressively angstier

First one is a line right before Jarvis disobeys some very important safety orders. Second one is Jarvis a while after the Octonauts abandon them and the Gups, not fully understanding cause they thought they were protecting someone. Third one is Polly noting that the Captain broke a very special promise he made. Forth one is the both of them shouting that they never killed anyone (Polly because she never tried and never would, Jarvis because she did try and failed every time).
…bah! heavy stuff! i will come with fluff soon!

Part of what I find... ironic, if I may say so: Henry VIII's contemporaries praised how Jane Seymour was more discreet and submissive (obviously comparing Anne), but that's what makes her such a mystery today. No one knows what she was really like as a person, because she had to play all this role to keep herself as queen. This is why she is considered the least favorite of wives (and don't help some works try sell her as a sweet angel).
Well, that praise has been translated very much at face-value, very literally, so many would argue that there's no enigma. Jane was not so much a constant as a new constant and an unknown quantity; and the sense of stability was to some extent merely this extension of the former status quo (Princess Mary was not reinstated, in contrast to the usual narrative, it's Jane's ascendancy that sees Mary's supporters interrogated and/or arrested, and even soon after, sees Mary's chamberlain executed, this is the second marriage in as many years whose legitimacy and issue is affirmed by Parliament, without sanction, nor even this time, dispensations from the Pope); but the very nature of the praise (Jane as anodyne, Jane as gentle and sweet) is testament to the toothlessness of her tenure.
Measured approaches are going to help with that (people don't like being spoon-fed, nor about-faces, The Tudors actually does give us the blueprint of her usual historical narrative) but unfortunately there aren't many. So like, Retha Warnicke is one of the only historians to mention the dissonance of the report of her plea for the restoration of the abbeys versus the evidence that Jane and her family owned properties of the Dissolution. Unfortunately, she also just completely discredits that report, claiming that it was from Chapuys and thus cannot be trusted (it's definitely not, he never in his life referred to Mary as anything other than 'the princess', not 'Madame Marie'), despite that it turns up twice by two different sources; so actually what she does there is deny any dissonance when it's dissonance that makes historic people compelling (I usually just see the reverse of this from fandom, Jane was an angel without agency nor autonomy and thus every single thing she did or accepted she was 'forced' to do by Henry, including her own inventory inclusive of the above, including marrying him, etc...)

gen:LOCK really said "while your trauma can change you, sometimes in irreversible and irrevocable ways, it doesn't have to restrict you from growing and loving" and "fighting for a better world means nothing if you don't have hope that things can be better" and "family isn't defined by blood it's the people you love and fight alongside" and "nobody ever stands alone" and and and and

the Late August Megastorm is a Me thing
it doesn't happen every year but around here there often will be a real fucky week weather-wise in late August that will culminate in a huge storm. that's the circumstance by which I arrived/awakened/whatever so now I strongly associate with it
anyway this year's was last night and that and the days preceding have really reminded me how attuned with earth's weather I/we are. as in, our internal weather and the external weather are so often uncannily in sync. I don't know what that's about, but the same mechanism that enables me to feel such comfort and joy on a heavy humid day that ends in a violent storm is the same one that forces me to be chronically suicidal when it's not warm and/or sunny enough so it's definitely the worst kind of double-edged sword if you live somewhere with a 7 to 8 month long cold season

13′s Ugh Humanity is Awful moment is hilarious bc many other doctors have been super dramatic about it but she’s like ‘i don’t know why i bother with the lot of you’ and Mary Seacole tells her to get over it and. She does. The end.
the power of women in history the doctor has starry eyes for >>>>>> the doctor’s disgust at humanity

There is just something about a hot guy (Ace who else) wrapped up in skin tight armour, wounded, struggling to control a short circuiting mecha of epic size, that powers itself on nuclear cores + the mental link between pilot couples and taking the entire brunt of that mental link himself because he can’t die like this

“Let’s go to the beach, each~ Lets go get a wave-“ 🎶
W o o o, at last thanks to some Amazon sales & coupons, I've finally collected the last two Pacific Coast dolls I've been eyeing since forever, Simone Summers & Margot De Perla~ ❤️ Margot was an especially interesting case 'cause it seems like not alot of people were digging her tinsel hair awhile back (and upon first opening her/feeling through said hair... yeaaaah I can see what they mean now lol .x.)
Luckily I found a neat lil tutorial to help pluck out those rougher tinsel bits so her locks are all silky smooth now~ 😊 Kinda hard to really pick my "top" fave now that I'm comparing all four ngl .3.

For the ask game! 4 and 14?
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
It’s the way I love Pacific Rim with my whole soul and have never done a scrap of fanart for it because I can’t draw mechanical subject matter/robots to save my life-my greatest sin, my biggest regret (;ω;)
Also, the way I was in the MCU pit for years and only drew Iron Man once-for a school assignment no less-for much the same reason,,,
14. Any favorite motifs
SPACE! STARS!! CELESTIAL BODIES!!! THE NIGHT SKY!!!! 🌌 ⭐️ 💫 ✨
I love anything and everything space/galaxy themed and if I ever have an excuse to, in even the tiniest ways, shoehorn in a star theme or sprinkle in some kind of sparkly night sky pattern into a design then by golly!! I’m gunna do it!! 💫 ✨
(Ask game is here!)
