Because generational change will be an important theme in our story, we should pause briefly here to consider how social change and generational change are interrelated. As a matter of simple accounting, any social change - from the rise of rap music to the decline of newspapers - is always produced by some combination of two very different processes. The first is for many individuals to change their tastes and habits in a single direction simultaneously. This sort of social change can occur quickly and be reversed just as quickly. If large numbers of Americans, young and old, fall in love with sport utility vehicles, as they did in the 1990s, the automotive marketplace can be quickly transformed, and it can be transformed in a different direction just as quickly. Sociologists sometimes call this type of change "intracohort," because the change is detectable within each age cohort. The second sort of social change is slower, more subtle, and harder to reverse. If different generations have different tastes or habits, the social physiology of birth and death will eventually transform society, even if no individual ever changes. Much of the change in sexual mores over the last several decades has been of this sort. Relatively few adults changed their views about morality, and most of those who did actually became more conservative. In the aggregate, however, American attitudes toward premarital sex, for example, have been radically liberalized over the last several decades, because a generation with stricter beliefs was gradually replaced by a later generation with more relaxed norms. Sociologists call this type of change "intercohort," because the change is detectable only across different age groups. Precisely because the rhythm of generational change is slower paced, it is more nearly inexorable. (Bowling Alone, p35)
This is fucking nonsense!!! Literally what are you talking about old man!!!! Sexual norms didn’t “relax” with a new generation because young people are ontologically more progressive than their parents - if this was the case we would all be polyamorous kinksters today, especially given that church attendance and Christian affiliation is at all time historic lows. Like maybe this has more to do with no-fault divorce becoming legal and the necessity of women to work outside the home as a result of neoliberal economic policy and liberal feminist pushes for (white!) women to earn a wage independent of their husbands, which resulted in a change in the way we view sex outside of marriage (along with a bunch of other factors!!).
Similarly, trends in vehicle consumer preferences are not these random events that just “happen” because a bunch of individuals spontaneously and independently decided that they liked sports cars all at the same time. the necessity of vehicle ownership in places like America are the end result of rapid post-war low-density suburban development that pushed for homeownership as a way to shore up middle class interests as a bulwark against proletarian class conscious (to paraphrase William Levitt, homeowners are too busy to be communists), which was part of the broader policy regime of McCarthyism. This was coupled with the neoliberalisation of the state in the 1970s and 80s, resulting in the gutting of public transit and the selling off the public roads to private companies, further necessitating vehicle ownership and subsequently placing a large cultural emphasis on the prestige of owning a car, which can be easily flaunted in public as a display of personal wealth. and finally, the land available to do this rapid development & privatisation was the result of centuries of settler genocide and racial slavery which produced a perfect “terra nullius” for whites to build an empire on top of. So a preference for what vehicle someone thinks looks cool is far downwind of this historical context, none of which is apparently important to Putnam when weighed against the titanic explanatory power of “generational change”

Some things are meant to be remembered; for the right reasons.
i've posted this review on steam, but i think that i want to say it here, too.
Here is my review of the 'promotional' material (according to steam) Secrets of the Machine
What I liked: the art appeared to be a true return to form; the style had its original charm with updated lighting techniques and slightly better optimization than previous games in the Bendy series. The audio design was also nice, with good ambiance and nice composition.
And now, the jank.
The game handles reasonably well; but it is clearly slapdashed together and is missing important components. There is no starting menu. There are no loading screens; and it is very jarring. There are no options in the game menu - you cannot minimize the game, you cannot brighten the game, you cannot make the game run any better on your computer, and it is incredibly laggy. If you have a potato laptop? Nah, get out. No game for you. There are no subtitles that you can enable, and voices are very muffled. Additionally, the game is very dark, and as mentioned, you cannot adjust that in the settings of the game, nor in steam settings. You have to do so from your computer.
Controls are extremely janky, as you cannot run, you cannot jump, and there is no indication for interaction with any objects. There are no control settings for remapping, and you cannot even see which keys do what.
Puzzles are boring and confusing; with no guidance. There were no hints, no rhyme or reason. There was more puzzle in the BATIM chapter 1 demo release. This thing is very confusing, especially when you cannot see anything at all. You will spend a long time walking back and forth between two rooms, wondering how you can progress, because you've done everything you could: you smashed cutouts; you hit targets; you opened and closed hands; you found posters for future games, but nothing that could move forward the one you were playing at the time. If you look at the community page, you will see that most people simply spent their time clicking on the soup can dispenser to see how many cans they could get.
If you have epilepsy, nah get out. Oh? I didn't mention the flashing lights? Well the developers did not either. Not only did they not mention the flashing lights, not in the game nor in steam, but they included TWO car crashes without warning - one audio based, and another that was directed at players. This is not only rude, but it is dangerous. Warnings exist so that people can make educated choices whether or not to interact with content that may be sensitive to them. Warn people appropriately. This 'game' did not take any measure to protect its players. There are many instances of sudden loud noises, flashing lights, and jarring location switches (not to mention the car crashes).
The story was lacking, and has nothing to do with the puzzles that a player is faced with. It feels like three disjointed tracks, and none of them align, all of them crashing together in a discordant, unsatisfying, confusing mess. It brought in more new characters that had nothing to do with the original story nor interested players, and had content that went against previously established material. It was (as you can tell, from a writer's perspective) a bad story.
It was less of a demo, less of a playable trailer, more like a tech demo with a few morsels for fans to pick apart and wish there was more of, wish there was more effort put into, wish there was more love and care for them, the players who arguably were the foundation of this game. There were teasers for games that, honestly, lacked the soul that the very first game had, and here's a point to prove it: there was an easter egg that if you clicked something 414 times (very funny.) it would rise in the air and then fall down without further ado. In the game files, the name for that sound effect? Sting. Yeah. It did. Games are a collaborative work; between the creators and the players. Blatant disregard and flippancy towards half of the collaboration is not acceptable behavior. This is a development team that mocks those who once loved them most, those who poured over their coding and carefully crafted world to marvel at what they had made, and coaxed in others with the rich promise of a delightful story that anyone could engage with on any level. The spite the creators have shown for the individuals who, essentially, had given rise to their stature in the first place, is painful.
Finally, by the time that I got a chance to sit down and actually play the game- I personally could not. The developers, by constantly updating a clearly unfinished game, had made their final update - that of a wood board blocking the actual place where gameplay takes place. You cannot go to any of the places shown in the screenshots, because the game is locked on the opening area. I've seen many people complaining of it; hoping that they can play the game.
Now, in the fashion we've seen common of JDS, they have rescinded their terrible design choice - but without notifying players that it is now possible to play the game; without telling players that this was purposeful; without telling players anything aside from a big old screw you. It is entirely possible that the only reason they put the game back into a playable state was the torrent of negative reviews that spawned after their. interesting. choice. regardless, those who care about their playerbase would have informed those who complained that it was a temporary gesture for storytelling reasons. They, however, did not, and there are a multitude of reviews marking the game as unplayable.
No matter what, the bottom line is this: This is not okay.
I'm not sure how much more eloquently I can put the fact that I'm heartbroken. This game, unlike any other, shows how much scorn that a developer can have for their own fans and playerbase. I am glad that there are people who enjoyed it, but I wonder - what did you really like about it?
Is it the memories?

THE WITCH KING by Martha Wells is excellent and I had a great time reading it. The worldbuilding is nuanced and well-developed, with factions and history in a way that implies much more going on, but not getting bogged down in little details that don’t matter to this particular story. It deals with colonization and empire from the perspective of a quasi-immortal character (Kai) who has not been around forever, but has been around long enough that things which are part of his culture and history are now details that would fascinate only historians. The narrative shifts between two time periods in his life. This means that some events are mentioned before they were actually shown, but it was generally in a way that made the whole thing easier to follow. The two timelines are connected, as the main characters are trying to figure out whether the plan they were working on when they were betrayed is still salvageable.

So 414 thoughts:
it seems the quirk transfer is working roughly as intended and is causing Deku's to see Tomura's memories and mix them with his own.
On the one hand, this is really cool. We're getting to see all these memorable scenes and compare them; for example, the scenes we got seem to be of when Deku or Shigaraki met or truly started to get to know someone. Perhaps you could even say it was when each gave hope to someone who didn't have much of that; Deku by telling Shoto he's not just some an extension of his father, and Tomura by giving Toga, Dabi, & especially Spinner a goal they could strive for.
Tumblr media
But on the other hand, I worry this could go beyond just "viewing" memories. It's also possible Deku could start influencing Shigaraki's recollection of events to make him more agreeable (for example, I saw someone suggest this could end with Deku saving Tenko from under the bridge instead of AFO) and I wouldn't be a fan of that. Didn't like when 2 out of 3 of our last League conflicts relied on mentally impairing them & I wouldn't like it any more if it was how Deku resolved the conflict here.
But on yet a third hand; it's possible if we went that way, the reverse could also happen. This connection seems pretty two-sided, so Deku could start mixing his recollection of events with Tomura's; resulting in, idk, wondering why he's beating up his good friend Muscular, or seeing himself beat fused Overhaul into the ground and then destroying his arms in revenge. (And it'd be so funny if we finally got a flashback of Deku's dad only for him to be replaced with Kotaro or Kurogiri.) Oh, or a potentially big one: going to save Bakugou from the slime villain only for everyone to pass them by on the street waiting for some hero to come by and handle it for hours or even days until they make their way to the underside of Tenko's bridge. (Bonus points if he's gotten rid of all the vestiges by then, so he experiences the whole thing alone like Tenko did.)
I absolutely don't want Deku to beat Tomura by just messing with his head. But if he could get his own head messed with in turn, see what Tomura saw & experience what Tomura experienced to gain a deeper understanding of his viewpoints, while the effect on Tomura is limited to similarly seeing Deku's viewpoints? Well that would be an entirely different matter that'd actually be super interesting & promising.
This memory mixing has only just started up for a few pages, so we can't say where or how far it'll go. But it's already given us some nice League crumbs, so I want to be hopeful that this could lead somewhere really good.

top 5 scps s'il vous please
hello alex this is a fantastic question & it sent me down a few pleasant hours of looking through favourite scps
[REDACTED PER PROTOCOL 4000-ESHU] (aka taboo): this is one of my all-time favourite pieces of short horror fiction. it’s a forest that cannot be named full of things that cannot be named & everyone should read it
scp-1981 (ronald reagan cut up and talking): a tape that shows a video of ronald reagan giving a speech while being slowly mutilated. i love this one. its simple and unnerving with no clear danger indicated
scp-414 : a degenerative condition in which one slowly loses the ability to maintain an identity or happiness without the presence of another person. one of my all-time favourite scps and very haunting imo
scp-2602, which used to be a library: a location which compels people to repeatedly reference the fact that it used to be a library. also an infohazard, my favourite type of scp
scp-3211: it’s a bit hard to describe this one. it’s an scp that you can only observe for six minutes, after which you forget everything about it and can no longer read anything you recorded about it. the page has a lot of meta elements.

New press archive page reveals some juicy lore secrets
Tumblr media
The date of the article is July 28th 1948.
Tumblr media
Now we know the official date when Joey Drew Studios was closed: 1948
Which means that Wilson was working at Joey Drew Studios at the time when he made the 414 audio log, since the audio log is from April 1948, and the studio closed in July. This pretty much confirms that Wilson was the Gent worker, who stole Shawn’s toolbelt.
But wait, there’s more! It turns out that Gent took over the studio assets: presumably including the ink machine
Tumblr media
And it seems that gent continued to perform experiments with the machine until 1952, when they were finally closed for safety issues.
Tumblr media
That’s very interesting. it means that Thomas got the ink machine back. Now let’s think back to Allison’s comment about Thomas being upset that someone stole his "dusty old invention”.
Tumblr media
We all assumed that invention was the ink machine, and the “someone” was Joey, but now it looks more likely that the thief was Wilson. Was the stolen invention the seeing glass tool? If Wilson has it, then he could have been the person who messed with the golden text in Henry’s cell.
As a reminder to those who haven’t read my post about it: the Employee handbook confirms that the messages were made by two different authors.
Tumblr media
As we’ve pointed out before, those three words were written in what appears to be pencil, while the other messages are written with ink. Pencil was also used to cross out the “don’t” in “don’t go through the door”, presumably to encourage Henry to repeat the loop
Tumblr media
Of course, we don’t know if all of these details are connected, but to me it looks suspiciously like Wilson might have been the mastermind behind the events in BATIM and Henry becoming trapped in a time loop.

same anon who asked about fandom crossover problem: thanks for your answer. but i've followed your instruction, put two fandom tag ids with OR in Search Within Results and noticed unrelated fandom works are still there. then tried to use character tag as page and apply two fandom ids with OR into swr and results are still same. what am I missing? oh yeah, I'm finally run into "414 Request-URI Too Large" error. that's 150 tags, i think. honestly, it would be easier if those two fandom media tags are put under "[fandom name] all media types" or one parent tag or somwthing like that. just exclude one media tag to avoid spoilers.
Sorry I couldn't be more help, anon. I guess I didn't understand fully what you were trying to accomplish. You can try again (next time the inbox is open) just telling me what you do and don't want and I can see what sort of filters I can figure out that'll get you there.
what fandoms do you want to see
what fandoms do you want to avoid seeing
what other characters, ships, tags do you also want to remove
what other characters, ships, tags do you want to see results for
You could also look into browser extensions like AO3 Savior. You can get a link to the extension as well as some tips for installing and using it in the AO3 FAQ here.
