I often ponder to paint the skies, yet I still have to find the courage to pick up the oils, brushes and canvas to do so.. 🌱🖼️🧚🏻🌿

Noia amb barret de palla (Girl With Straw Hat), Noia amb síndria (Girl With Watermelon) and Noia amb vestit vermell (Girl With Red Dress) were among the last oil paintings by the Catalan cubist painter Maties Palau Ferré (1921-2000), known as “the painter who burned his paintings”.
Each one of these paintings is over 2 meters tall (more than 6 ft 6 inches tall). Palau Ferré painted these three pieces in 1974, following a contract with an art merchant according to which the artist was paid by square meters of work.
This was an abusive contract that went on for more years than the artist was originally told about. It stripped the artist of his freedom to choose what to paint, forced him to create too much artistic production in too little time, he wasn’t allowed to exhibit his work without the merchant’s permission, and he was paid a very low price for his paintings because the merchant had fixed an established price years ago and refused to revalue it according to the economical changes in the art market. Palau Ferré tried to leave the contract by taking it to the courts, but in 1974 the Supreme Court ruled that he must follow the contract until the end, and it wouldn’t end until he had painted 42.20 m² of canvas more. This is when he painted the figures above, who have a more pensive and sadder look than usual.
The next year, in 1975, he finished the contract and stopped painting oil on canvas. From then on, he only painted with wax and Chinese ink. But as soon as he painted them, he burned them down. As an artist, he needed to paint, but he refused to allow his work to enter the market again. He also stopped exhibiting his work.
He burned them as a protest for the labour rights of artists, who shouldn’t depend on merchants, galleries and auctions.
Art associations and museums from around the world sent him letters asking him to stop burning his art, and a museum from the USA even asked him that, since they couldn’t exhibit his paintings, at least they wanted to exhibit their ashes. He refused this, too, but years after his death his descendants agreed.
In 1989, after many artists and art lovers asked him to, he started exhibiting his work again. However, he never exhibited in an art gallery or any other commercial place, his work was to be seen in public but never enter the market. He exhibited in heritage sites (such as the Escornabou castle) and public museums like Museum of History of Catalonia. He also strengthened his collaboration with NGOs that work for human rights around the world and for better life conditions in Africa, giving them his work for free because he believed that art must have a social role.
