Got the idea for a cavewoman queen that will appear somewhere in the world of My Wicked Stepmothers. It will take a while to get to her and this likely won't be her final look, but the idea was too fun and wild to keep to myself.

If anything I think you should speak more, because I love everything you write (and draw.) You've been one of my biggest inspirations to go back and give all of my ocs actual stories instead of just designs.
In fact, ever since you mentioned having non-fpk family ocs before, I have been incredibly curious.
Please feed me all of the information like a bird feeding its young, except its letters going into my eyes instead of food going into my mouth
you have no idea how much that warms my heart, i'm really flattered that you see me as an inspiration. it's all i could really ask for
i do have some ocs, yeah. though i will say, the fpk au characters are definitely outliers when it comes to the amount of personality and lore they have. most of my ocs have very basic backstories, and many of them only do because i used to roleplay as them with my friends. a lot of my original designs that i'm attached to don't even have names, let alone personalities
since i'll be posting a lot of pictures, i'll throw this under a read more so it's not too long
i guess i'll start with my oldest oc, a lion king character who used to be my "fursona" (well not exactly, since i've never considered myself a furry. but persona wouldn't fit here) years ago, back in 2012 i believe. she went through a lot of changes over the years, but i've settled on a design that i really like
Tumblr media
her name is swahibu (used to be swahili, i wasn't particularly creative, and i changed it recently since it was a bit awkward for her to be named after the entire language hahaha), and she has a little brother named kobe. their lore isn't anything too elaborate, they're essentially scar's grandchildren who used to be outlanders, but after the events of the second movie joined the pridelands. swahibu is bitter and a bit mean, but cares very much about her little brother. she got her scars in a fight with rogue lions which unfortunately ended with their mother's death, so they're now on their own. kobe is a smart cub, and brings a bit of joy and innocence to his big sister's life. as they both resemble their grandfather more than they'd like, they're often the object of nasty comments from those who lived under his tyrannical rule, though they do eventually earn the pridelanders' respect. not much else to say about them, except that i like to hc swahibu as gay. also, they have a very simple family tree that i made to show what their parents looked like, here (might not work if you don't have a deviantart account, but i'm not sure)
--
next up, there's a character i've considered my persona for quite some time, and one i used to put in many funny scenarios with my friends' ocs. he also changed the most out of all of them throughout the years, and recently i gave him a more furry like design as i hate drawing human faces haha
Tumblr media
his name is rick, and he's a hybrid of all kinds of different animals. he's very laid back and lazy, though the fact that he's a hybrid gives him some animal-like traits and behaviors. he used to have a backstory but it's kind of stupid so i'm considering changing it, but he was basically created in a lab and then released after it was shut down. now he lives on his own with his cat, jon. he's one of those characters who are very flexible, so if i wanted to, i could modify him to fit into any scenario (for example, he used to have an assassins creed universe version which i used for roleplay years ago hahaha). not much else to say since i'm still in the (slow) process of changing him
--
i also have a lot of dragon characters, most of them were made for the purpose of a larger roleplay story with my friends. in general i take 'dragon' as a very vague term, since to me a dragon can look however you want and all those classification rules are kinda stupid. but you'll still a bit of, idk, i guess a paleoart like direction for their designs, since i like speculative biology and such. also, some of these originated as heavily based on some of my favorite characters at the time, you'll see that with the first one especially
Tumblr media
his name is stark and he's probably the dragon that has the most lore behind him. i won't go into too many details regarding the backstory since it's long and very connected to the roleplay (you know, bit of a "you just had to be there" moment haha). but tl;dr he was taken in by a village and raised from hatchling, so he's very docile and a little bit confused. the village was attacked and he was able to survive, but one of his legs was scarred pretty badly, so he noticeably limps while walking. he's a semi-aquatic dragon, so he's an excellent swimmer. funnily enough, he went through a complete "reboot" a few years ago. in the original rp, he was a massive asshole, he'd hurt others for his own amusement and was generally very aggressive and not pleasant to be around. also, he had a prosthetic leg, though i scrapped that as it was far too advanced for the setting i envisioned him in. i much prefer this direction, i love my giant himbo gator-dragon. and i wonder how many of you can guess what character was the inspiration for his appearance (it used to be a lot more obvious in his first design iterations)
(and no, his wing isn't missing. this is just to show his back haha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these next three don't really have too much backstory to them. well, except for the first one, his name is ithaar, and he was one of my first ocs ever. he went through a massive redesign quite recently, so he has close to nothing in common with his first iterations. the other two characters, eurus and ash, were made for rp purposes quite recently, and so don't have too much lore behind them
ith is a bit of a coward, he struggles with his self-confidence and believes everyone sees him as insignificant due to his small size and inability to fly. he can camouflage, though, so he's a lot cooler than he thinks. also, he moves by hopping around like a little kangaroo. his design is very dromaeosaur-like, with short stubby arms and yi-qi inspired wings
eurus is very pterosaur-like, though much larger than even the largest azhdarchids. he doesn't like the company of others, he's a bit of a loner (with trauma!). he may seem mean on the surface, but his past experiences make him unable to walk past someone who's in need. not quite a gentle giant, though. i think it's easy to see which pterosaurs in particular were the inspiration for his design, though his crests are very dilophosaurus-like
the last one is ash, and she's the newest addition to the roster. her rp session was very short and didn't really add much to her lore, but she's generally a huge jerk who likes annoying others and stealing from them. but of course, it wouldn't be an oc of mine if there wasn't some trauma involved, and she's no exception. she believes she doesn't fit anywhere, she felt rejected by her own kind for her unnatural abilities (she can move things with her mind), and so she copes with it by being a prick. her design was inspired by junker queen from overwatch haha
---
i also have four night fury characters i made during my httyd phase, and i redesigned them about a year ago to be a lot more "natural" in their appearance. they used to be quite a bit more colorful back in the day, and not in the good way haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
their names are vel'ri, sherok, atis and marivo. no real backstory, just vibes. the first one used to be my "main" character during the httyd phase. vel'ri and atis are female, sherok and marivo are male
--
and lastly, some non-dragon characters. these don't really have any backstory that i think is worth sharing, but i still love them very much
Tumblr media
this one is named rugat and they're a genderless, shapeshifting magma alien thing. i don't know what they are. i just really like their design. they're aggressive, but they have a soft spot for small, weak creatures. god knows what their reasoning is, but i thought it was a cute personality trait
Tumblr media
and these two are named lox and bagel. they're a ragarox, an original species i made years ago when it was cool and hip to have a closed species. they're eyeless cave dwelling lizard things. very chubby. these two guys are not related but they hang out all the time. 🏳️‍🌈 perhaps?
lox, on the left, is the more active and territorial of the two. but he's also super affectionate towards bagel
bagel, on the other hand, is the couch potato. very round and chubby, 10/10
as a fun fact i like to think their long tongues have very distinct smells. lox's smells like lime, while bagel's smells a bit like blueberry
--
and lastly, here are two unnamed characters. i like their designs but i haven't had the chance or inspiration to think of any details about them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first one is an okapi-like thing. with a kitty face. the second is like a weird mix between a ceratopsid and some kind of mammal
oh and, here's some redesigns of old dragon characters that i forgot to mention earlier. they used to be very different (all but one were inspired by other characters, but you can't see it on their current designs), and i don't have any backstories for them yet. their names are also going to be changed, so consider them nameless for now
Tumblr media
(fun fact: the top left one was one of the first iterations of eurus' design, but i decided to turn it into a different character cause i still like it)

Hello fellow synapsid! φ(゜▽゜*)♪
For an Easter joke, I was going to do a cartoon-esque illustration of Kollikodon. It's a Cenomanian (~99-96 MYA) monotreme with "bun like molars". There isn't much material, so I was going to go with a "well, if NO ONE ELSE was going to suggest this common ecological and phylogenetic attributes" approach.
Thing is, I haven't done an independent paleo reconstruction before, and all the material that's known is the right maxillary. Also, as committed to the joke as I am at this point, mammals aren't really my strongest of interest.
I'm worried that, since it's an obscure genus with few illustrations, my depiction might give people the wrong impression of what the animal was like... But I don't like being TOO conservative, especially when a gut feeling is telling me that certain approaches in speculation are viable, but unexplored.
Do you have any advice? Common mistakes, pitfalls I should avoid, how many pages a day should I speed read Witton's paleoartist's handbook, other folks to asks for advice? Things that'll help me be a better paleoartist.
I also know you don't specialise in paleoart, but since this is a case for a synapsid, you were the first person I thought of to ask for advice.
First step is starting with what we know. Thing with Kollikodon is that all we have is this:
Tumblr media
It seems to be a stem-monotreme, decently close to the monotreme crown. Based on all other monotremes (including the extinct Kryoryctes and Steropodon), we can guess that its body was relatively stocky and short-limbed. It's outside the clade that we know had the beaks present in platypi and echidna, though we don't have enough to say for certain that it didn't have one. Should also be noted, though, that its teeth imply a different ecology from either of them. Its molars are bunodont (flat, quadrangular, multicusped), and bunodont molars are common in generalist omnivores (humans have somewhat bunodont molars), but the unusual morphology of Kollikodon's molars implies that it might have been doing more crushing than the average generalist.
The thing about something as fragmentary and enigmatic as this is that lots of speculation is necessary to portray it at all. But the flipside is, there are many ways to do it that aren't wrong. So a lot of it's up to you. If you want to avoid giving people the wrong impression of what it's like, then try to avoid features that are "out of left field" so to speak. Things that we don't see in monotremes or that we wouldn't expect in a generalist omnivore are less likely to be present in Kollikodon based on the data we have. For example, all known monotremes have relatively short limbs, and you don't necessarily need particularly long legs if you're a generalist, so it's safest to give it relatively short limbs. So keep in mind what it's related to and what life it was probably living, and have fun with it from there, is what I'd say.
And if you want some more paleoart-focused advice, there are a whole bunch of paleoartists on Tumblr! @i-draws-dinosaurs, @knuppitalism-with-ue, @aberrantologist, @ppaleoartistgallery, @alphynix, @dinodanicus, and @usik-paleo-illust are just a few, and you can find many more are in the #paleoart tag. I'm not an artist, so I recommend reaching out to some of them if you want some more experienced tips!

Hey guys, how ‘bout a fun fact science corner? I’m wanting to talk about Kimbetopsalis Simmonsae. I know it’s a big word, sadly we don’t have common names for most extinct animals so any creature that hasn’t existed within the last 1000 years is gonna be a mouthful.
Now what does Kimbetopsalis have to do with Cro-Marmot and Dumuzi? This is where science and my headcanons merge.
So Let’s talk Dino-Sore days.
Tumblr media
If Cro was around during the age of the Dinosaurs, that dates him all the way back to the Mesozoic era. So let’s throw him at the tail end of the Cretaceous period, when the most popular of the giant reptiles reigned, tyrannosaurus, the titanosaurs, pteranodon, ect.
Marmots did not exist at any time during the entirety of the Mesozoic. In fact, though many of the mammals that lived during that time were very rodent like, true rodents did not even appear for another 10 million years after dinosaurs were wiped off the face of the planet. And marmots did not evolve for at LEAST another 48 million years after THAT.
So Cro and his sister Dumuzi could not have been marmots. So then what were they?
Time to put on my paleonerd hat.
Meet Kimbetopsalis Simmonsae
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the left we have paleoart of what we believe Kimbetopsalis to have looked like, and to the right we have a modern day marmot. Not too drastically different, eh?
Now here’s what’s really cool about Kimbetopsalis. We have fossil evidence that tells us that they are one of the few survivors of the K/PG mass extinction. That’s right, these are one of the legendary mammals that survived the famous asteroid impact that wiped out all the non-avian dinosaurs and played a role in bringing forth the Age of Mammals. If it weren’t for little survivors like them, we wouldn’t be here!
Kimbetopsalis is part of a group of mammals that no longer exists, the multituberculates. These group of animals survived for 130 million years, dying out and disappearing from the fossil record forever in the late Eocene. But don’t be too sad! Multituberculates existed for longer than ANY other group of mammaliforms, including the one that you, I, and every canon character of htf belongs to. The placentals. Today there are only three living groups of crown mammals (aka true mammals): the monotremes (such as the platypus and echidnas), the marsupials (such as kangaroos and opossums), and the placentals.
Now I could go on forever about taxonomies but trust me we’d be here forever. Especially since we are still learning what we can to fully understand mammal evolution. You see, the fossil record for Mesozoic mammals is scarce. Mammals did not get much larger than a badger throughout all the Mesozoic so they did not fossilize easily. Most of what we know about them from that time is from small fragmentary remains, mainly teeth. But despite very few full fossils having been found, we are learning and discovering something new about our ancient mammalian ancestors every day. What we know is constantly changing, but that is the nature of paleontology.
Tumblr media
Like I said. We’d be here all day. So let’s move on.
As far as mammals go, Multituberculates like Kimbetopsalis were very common during the Mesozoic. They are easily identifiable by, you guessed it, their teeth.
Tumblr media
As you can see, the molars have some crazy cusps on them, also known as “tubercles” hence the name. Their teeth are designed for chomping and crunching all kinds of vegetation. These teeth are very unique among mammals and probably helped them to have a generalist diet which would have aided them greatly in surviving the aftermath of the Chicxulub asteroid impact.
Anyways, Kimbetopsalis is a survivor and a cool little critter, much like Cro is. They lived among the largest land animals to ever walk the earth. They survived the horrifying event that saw an end to the Age of the Reptiles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dunno bout yall, but I just think that’s pretty neat.

Hi I guess I should make a pinned post explaining my whole deal
I have like 5 different instagram accounts to separate the different flavors of my art but I refuse to do that here cause I don’t really have a Tumblr audience as is.
First off! Furry art! I am a furry, in that I have cartoon animal characters and I draw them, write about them, and rotate them in my head. They are my blorbos and I have been drawing some of them since the mid-2000s and I’m not about to stop yet. I’d like to make a webcomic about them someday.
Tumblr media
On the left is Ozzy, he is my favorite son and he is a bearded vulture griffin. The skinny guy with the big ears is Snitley. This is basically the poster child of what my furry art is like. It’s mostly clean, good fun.
The only nsfw stuff tends to be violence centered around my vampire fly character, The Master:
(blood warning below the cut)
Tumblr media
That’s as nasty as it gets around here. (and it will always be tagged accordingly)
My main art account on Instagram, SaritaWolff, has a lot more and I usually post there long before I post on Tumblr. Tumblr’s just kinda my dumping ground.
The other type of art you’ll see around here is paleoart! I started hosting “Archovember” (my take on “Draw Dinovember”) a few years ago so every November tends to be dedicated to drawing dinosaurs (and other archosaurs).
Tumblr media
I’ll draw paleoart periodically throughout the year too, but November is when it kinda explodes. I also sell my paleo designs as stickers and other products on Redbubble!
https://www.redbubble.com/people/SaritaWolff/shop
Tumblr media
If you like my paleoart but don’t want the furry nonsense, I recommend following SaritaPaleo on Instagram, as that’s all I post there.
Lastly, I’ve recently forayed into drawing educational zoology art for my new Instagram account SaritaZoo. These tend to be what explode on Tumblr. I really love how open and willing to be educated about animals the Tumblr community is!
Tumblr media
So if you just want to learn about real animals and don’t want fantasy animal people on your feed, I recommend following SaritaZoo on Instagram.
(As for my credentials, I have a degree in Wildlife Conservation and over 14 years of experience working with animals, and put a lot of research into my educational art. The educational stuff is sincerely meant to be educational.)
(Also on IG I have a photography account and a personal account but I gave up on posting photos to Tumblr long ago as no one interacts with them. So they’re just on Instagram for now.)
Tumblr media
So yeah! TLDR: Those are the three major criteria of art I post here (along with various psas and other things I reblog) and they are a bit different so I don’t want people following my account for one thing and then being shocked when they see the other.
I am a person, I have multiple interests. I love throwing all those interests in one place. If you want to see them seperated, that’s what I use Instagram for! If you want to see them in better resolution, that’s what I use Tumblr for!
Thanks for stopping by!

So Prehistoric Planet is amazing. A random thought I had near the end is that we actually saw almost no dinosaurs in this episode! Just the T. rex beach trip at the start, the rest was all pterosaurs, marine reptiles, ammonites, and other friends. What a flex for a Mesozoic documentary to in its very first episode go ‘Actually we don’t even need to talk about dinosaurs, all the other amazing creatures that lived alongside them can carry an episode on their own’.

#2
Something unexpected that I really love about Prehistoric Planet is how it stays in a single period in time and explores it, rather than trying to cover the entire Mesozoic and show the world changing. If you showed an alien the programme with the intro cut out and the title censored, they probably would never even guess it was a show about a distant time in Earth’s past. In just being a wildlife documentary that happens to be set 66 million years ago, it’s showing the Maastrichtian world as a living, full-formed, very real world that existed for an unbelievably long time, rather than a phase in an even longer evolutionary process. Now don’t get me wrong, I love wide sweeps of evolutionary history like Walking With Dinosaurs too, but Prehistoric Planet’s vibes are very different and I never knew I needed them. In fact, I’m really hoping we won’t even see a trace of the meteorite in episode five. Let me just go on a little tangent to really get into why.
Tumblr media
This is Trix the T. rex. I saw her in the Naturalis natural history museum. She lived and died 67 million years ago. Now, it is very easy for me to see that date and be filled with a sense of impending disaster. ‘Just before the end’ is a thought that quickly appears. But when you really think about it, that’s ludicrous. Trix lived her life, and then after she died her species continued to thrive for a million years. There’s thrice as much time between her and the Tyrannosauruses who died in the K-Pg extinction as there is between me and the first members of my species! And as for the thousands of years of recorded human history, those are a mere drop in that sea of time. Those years didn’t pass any faster back then than they do now, nor were they any less real. There were just as many moments in any one of those thousand millennia between Trix and the meteorite as there were in the millennium between me and Basil the Bulgar-slayer. If a wizard told you your species and your world would continue to thrive for a million years before eventually most of your clade would get wiped out by a terrible catastrophe, would you see your world as a doomed and temporary one about to go over a precipice? I think I would be delighted to know we have such a vast sea of time left.
This got longer and more philosophical than I expected, but the point is that I love the focus on the Maastrichtian as a diverse, living world, rather than the last age of the Mesozoic. We don’t know whether Prehistoric Planet is set a million, fifty thousand, or nine hundred years before impact, and it doesn’t really matter either. Even though all those dates are, geologically speaking, so close to the end of the Cretaceous we could barely tell the difference between them, they all have more time left than any of the animals can possibly conceive of. None of the animals we see in Prehistoric Planet have ever seen a Stegosaurus, and none of them will die as a consequence of a meteorite striking the Earth.

Dinovember day 16: triceratops! With no help from tumblr for deleting my first draft…. Also a little late because my wifi went down! Hopefully you’ll still take it…?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just a couple things I made in art class a while ago! The first is a whiteboard doodle of a triceratops because I had free time, and the second is from a book I made! Our project was to make a book with at least 8 pages using multiple medias. I decided to make my book comparing vintage/pop-culture “dinosaurs” versus the modern ones! The backgrounds are all water color, the “old” in acrylic, the “new” in colored pencil and pen, and the names in letter stamps! The cover used acrylic, hand carved stamps, and book corners. I chose paint for the “old” dinosaurs to mimic oil paintings, and the lack of lineart helping represent our fuzzy understanding of them. The “new” dinosaurs have lineart, representing how much clearer they are to us, and the (cheap) colored pencil represents the new generation of paleontologists and paleoartists. The watercolor backgrounds were meant just to be out of the way, putting focus on the animals. The letter stamps are meant to resemble that of a typewriter. I was originally going to hand write info blurbs, but I ran out of time- for that same reason the paintings aren’t very refined and my book has no title on its cover and my name is sloppily hand written instead of stamped in. The title was supposed to be “a more modern Mesozoic” as a play on “a more ancient dorcet”, which is regarded as one of the first true paleoart pieces.
I realize too late that I could’ve used pages from this book for days that I had no motivation, so why not post them now? Under a cut, of course.
My name is of course blotted out once again. The details on the shells and the megalo nearly killed me since I had no fine detail carving tools or skill, but I persisted!
My name is of course blotted out once again. The details on the shells and the megalo nearly killed me since I had no fine detail carving tools or skill, but I persisted!
Tumblr media
Dinovember day 13: Tyrannosaurus!
I’m not a fan of how static the poses are, and the painting could definitely be way better. As you can see I had a… small accident and got a bit of paint on my modern rex. Guess he was just born with a really weird birthmark. I also meant for him to be bigger than his fictional counterpart, but as you can see, that didn’t work out how I’d hoped.
Tumblr media
Dinovember day 14: Parasaurolophus!
I actually did make a separate drawing for day 14, but it must have been hidden due to the warnings I put on it, because no one seemed to notice it. Oh well I guess. This is one of the pages, if not the page I dislike the most. The old one is too dark, the new one is too bland with bad patterning and pose, and I don’t even know what I was doing on that background. Guess para is just bad luck for me!

2023 was… a lot. We expected that I guess. My expectations bar feels like it keeps being lowered and I would not be surprised to 2024 grabbed a shovel to still dig under the newly lowered bar, but let’s hope it doesn’t.
Despite the ton of bad, I should not ignore the good;
Some friends I got to talk with more! And I got to see them develop their own new OCs while I simmered on some new ones of my own.
With a revisit I finished the story mode in Little Witch Nobeta not once but twice (second being Advanced Mode)! Not sure I could do Time Trials, but Story Mode alone satisfied much for me
I got the pruning blade onto every single apple tree in the home fruit orchard. Another year and hopefully all trees will be in routine pruning order!
Did my first successful fruit tree graft. I would love to do more if I can find some workable cases to do so.
Thanks to sis I got to get into thrifting. Not only have I enjoyed some badly needed mental stimulation from it, but also find various books that I’ve been after to finishing some of my specific Series Collections, and some other miscellanea and décor too!
I got to learn of artists and writers I was not familiar with before, I’ve loved seeing the creative angles I have either not seen enough of before or haven’t seen at all before till this point!
I finished reading 1 Manga series and 1 book series in my shelves which I had not fully read through before. They are staying on my shelves, they are in the ranks of Classics for me now.
Goals (or moreso- wishes with how goals go these days) for 2024;
More art; OC art, reference sheets, plant art, spec evo art, paleoart, I’m not picky, any or all of them. Doing fanart of other peeps’ stuff would be nice too
Try to make one polymer clay piece, doesn’t matter what it is, can be super simple
Try to compliment other peoples’ artwork more online? That’s a tall order but still something I wish to do more.
Get more decorum progression in my bedroom- something framed on the wall, some curtains, or another larger decorum piece added into the curio. Or even repair my older framed photos from college and put them up even.
Get gardening back in some order; get one of the gardens (the Neo Garden at least) back in order; weeding mainly but other things too
Ditto for houseplants; have more houseplants thrive not just survive. Get things repotted where needed. Maybe get some new stuff if the houseplants reach equilibrium.
Expand on pruning and maybe grafting; get more trees under the yearly prune (it’d be nice to get some of Uncle’s fruit trees done), do client pruning (and TRY to not undercharge again, find someone of similar career who can help judge on that or reference from?), maybe do grafting requests with scion material I may have access to
Read more, read through a unfamiliar/unread series from my bookshelves, maybe get more into reading fanfiction from AO3
Finish another game I’ve never completed. Hollow Knight is one to be one I want to get through- provided hands stop getting strained from the action
Less attainable (I had some of these last year which is why the bar is set to “IF it can happen”) wishes;
Getting my G1 driver’s licence……. Or just getting a new driver’s handbook to replace the lost one so I can at least read-study on paper for it
Visit friends??? Somehow??? Somewhen??? Please???
Buy some sort of merch from an artist I look up to. Or an art comm
Most attainable of the four- just wear some feminine stuff casually? Maybe get something from thrift to wear? Even just something really simple or gender ambiguous brooch or something??
Even if I fail at many, or worse, all of these goals in the coming 2024, I still pray and hope for good and better things for the New Year. Please some more good for 2024, please some good change. May more good people get the good things they need 2024.

with the two requests i did today i wanted to pay close attention to how i fell about my process when drawing something """straightforward""" (to someone who's done a fair share of character commissions). and one thing i really felt is how complex flight rising dragons are. idk i guess i got desensitized through my years of playing but there's a ton of detail in form and patterning, especially with newer genes (thank god cryface went out of fashion, i think, as if har/jes wasn't the bane of me) and since my style isn't cartoony i feel kinda pressured to be more "in model" — but i also hate doing detail work
anyway what i truly realized is that i'd like to be able to draw dragons like natural animals rather than characters with human-like personalities. but that'd require getting insanely serious about paleoart

I will never again achieve the level of Raw Power I had as a 10 year old child trying to convince an Actual Palaeontologist that a fake dinosaur I made up was actually real and he’d “just never heard of it”

David Armsby’s ‘Old Buck’: A Review
youtube
So by now most of you are probably aware of the short film Old Buck by David Armsby (AKA Dead Sound) that came out today and has singlehanded become one of the best pieces of dinosaur media I have ever seen in my life. I haven’t really done a review-format-type-thing before but this really make me want to give it a shot. So, in advance, my short review is that this film is absolutely incredible, and you should all go and watch it a million times over like I have. Now, to say that in a much more long-winded way!

[Oh hey this is the one post on this list that I totally forgot that I made, still absolutely love this little guy! A clarification though, the genus Kunpengopterus existed before this year and the news here is about a new species of that genus called Kunpengopterus antipollicatus]

We give a lot of grief to dinosaurs with dumb boring names like Australotitan or even dumber stupid names like Thanos. But I think it’s time to point some appreciation towards dinosaur names that are just, so good, man.
Like, take Galeamopus. Pretty standard-sounding Latin name there but nope, turns out the authors were on some insane 4th-dimensional chess nonsense with this name.

[Galeamopus post my beloved. I'm so proud of this one and so pleased that it resonated with everyone!! If you haven't read this one before please check it out, it's genuinely one of my favourite posts that I've ever made and it being in the top spot this year makes me really happy!]
[Thank so much for another wonderful year on tumblr everyone! I've had some great moments and it's been so great to hear from all of you and to see the excitement that you have for learning and palaeontology and science in general!]

I think you mentioned the Tigrex's design makes it unhealthy once. If you could, how would you redesign it to look more natural?
I’ve talked about it with you in private but I don’t think I’ve mentioned it on my blog.
I want to like tigrex. I really do. Conceptually, it’s solid. A very basal flying wyvern that very closely resembles wyvern rex, the ancestor of all flying wyverns, and showcases their dinosaurian ancestry.
That would normally would be a solid 10/10 design, but unfortunately tigrex’s design team drew inspiration from 90s era paleoart. And with that comes shrink wrapping.
Tumblr media
Look at it. It’s awful. Tigrex looks like it’s starving and desperate, although I guess that would explain why it behaves like an aggressive rabid animal.
So how would I fix this? Well, I’d do something rather simple...
I’d put some freaking meat on its body
1. Make the fenestra not visible.
2. Give it proper lips so that it’s teeth are properly protected and moisturized.
3. Make its shoulder blades not extremely visible.
4. Change the torso. The torso is the worst part. It’s weirdly humanoid which doesn’t make sense for its body plan. Also the entire rib cage should not be visible and should be covered in fat and muscle. In fact it should have a very pronounced bulge formed by massive chest muscles and a large sternum in order to support its giant powerful arms.
I would also like to point out that the world of monster hunter is explicitly stated to be incredibly nutrient rich, so tigrex has no excuse to look like a skeleton.
Also an animal at that size with sprawling limbs would not be able to support its body, but the world of monster hunter is inhabited by beetles the size of dumptrucks, dragons so large they can mimic mountains or carve them, and people who run around with swords bigger than themselves. So I think that we can handwave that.
(Fifth gen quadrupedal flying wyverns also all have an extra finger/thumb on their hands which just adds another wrinkle to what I am going to call the Wyvern Digit Problem.)

A little unfortunate announcement
Hi, Roads followers. Don’t worry, no one’s going homeless or dying, thank the Gods. Just a sad update on the future state of affairs concerning my love-child of a fanfic.
So in my country, Portugal, we have been under strict confinement since January due to the plague, meaning I have been staying at home from work and therefore had a lot of time on my hands - time which I have happily been dedicating to sleeping, eating, working on my paleoart portfolio for college and posting my fanfic, which I have been working on since late November/early December.
Almost three months later, we’ve been slowly coming out of confinement and I’m supposedly going back to work on the 19th. Long story short, I work full-time at a fast-food restaurant and that means my free time (and energy + general will to live) will be severely cut down. I say supposedly because ever since the de-confinement started,  cases, deaths and hospitalizations have spiked because these idiots do not learn and refuse to ear a fucking mask and that could potentially mean we halt de-confinement and go back to stricter restrictions, but I digress.
As you can probably guess, regular posting will be affected. Until now, I have been trying to post every Friday and to no one’s greater astonishment than my own, I have been able to meet that deadline for the most part; however, now that I’m going back to hell kitchen where my poor ass belongs, I don’t think I will be able to keep it up. It makes me really sad because I have the whole story planned out and at least 13-15 chapters drafted and I’ve been having so much fun with it. Knowing that even a handful of people enjoy it enough to follow it also makes me so damn joyous, and not being able to continue it at the same rate... it sucks. I’m really sorry my people, but I’m afraid there’s nothing to be done.
I will still try to post every weekend if I can, Friday at the earliest, Sunday at the latest. No promises, though. School comes first, my portfolio absolutely has to take priority because fuck me if I am staying in a goddamn restaurant under a tyrant manager having to forcefully smile at strangers some of which do not even deserve that basic kindness and pretending I am extroverted 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 Fuck. That. Shit.🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪
Again, I am sorry, but if push comes to shove, the fanfic will have to be sacrificed. I hope you can all understand. In the meantime, this Friday or Saturday I will have chapter 9 ready and published, and then we’ll see what happens. Thank you for your support so far, and have a lovely week <3

Art/posting will be slow during the holidays, so here’s something to look at in the meantime!
Back in 2013, Saurian (then called Crynosaurs) held a competition to come up with color schemes for their Triceratops. I don’t think there was really a reward or purpose for it beyond seeing cool color patterns, but I can’t fault them for that.
This was my entry, one of many now-lost designs. A lot of submissions looked pretty good, but only like 3 can still be found on Google. Also, this was done in 2013, I was just dumb and wrote ‘15.
Lineart by Alex Lewko. I guess he’s still floating around the paleoart sphere somewhere? Chatted with him when Spore was big and he got me interested in paleoart instead of just drawing JP dinos, so thanks bud!
