So the Tully Monster (Tullimonstrum gregarium) is an incredibly enigmatic extinct animal whose fossils have only been found in one section of the Mazon Creek Fossil Beds near Morris, Illinois. Dating back to around 309 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian Epoch of the Carboniferous Period, the ironstone concretions found here are particularly rich with fossils.
The Tully Monster has stymied paleontologists for decades, because no one's been entirely sure how to classify it. It doesn't resemble anything else that's been found there or elsewhere, and it didn't have any features that easily distinguished it as a vertebrate or invertebrate.
So this most recent study consisted of scientists painstakingly analyzing over 100 Tully Monster fossils, along with several dozen fossils of other species found in the same area. They were looking in particular for any traits that would suggest these were vertebrates. In short? They didn't find any. Which suggests that the Tully Monster was most likely just a very, very weird invertebrate--not so surprising given the wide diversity of aquatic invertebrates found today!
One thing the study didn't look into was the possibility that this species may have been something even more unusual--a non-vertebrate chordate. These animals have a notochord, a flexible structure that provides attachment for muscles similarly to a vertebrate's spine. While modern vertebrates may have a notochord during embryonic development, most do not retain it beyond a vestigial state once development is complete.
There will no doubt continue to be debate about just what the Tully Monster actually was, but this study adds a significant piece to the puzzle.

submit YOUR favorite extinct prehistoric animals and we’ll have these poor dead fuckers battle it out amongst each other in a series of polls
RULES:
MUST be extinct- savvy creatures who are still alive, like the coelacanth and my beloved horseshoe crab, are not eligible here
this animal must have existed and gone extinct BEFORE recorded history. the thylacine, the moa, stellar’s sea cow, these animals are all very dear but they are not eligible here. for simplicity’s sake i’m using a working definition of the end of the last glacial maximum, but I’m just a guy who likes bones and if you know a better way to do it I’m all ears
you don’t have to be a student or scholar to participate in any of this, i just ask that you know basic information about both animals before you vote
i’m too lazy to make an entire google form so you can just drop a species name in the comments. i’ll do all the research myself i love research. send as many paleoblorbos as you want, bonus points if you have a funny line to go with any of them
you can send basic bitches like the stegosaurus or the wooly mammoth but if i think your paleoblorbo is too well known I’m not adding ‘em, i don’t want them to sweep the lesser known animals simply on basis of recognition
even if you don’t have any paleoblorbos yourself please reblog to help this reach people who do

getting upset over the fact that ill never get to experience the cambrian explosion. i dont think i would be able to survive at all but oh to swim in the shallow oceans of the early earth with delightful creatures like hallucigenia and anomalocaris. their names r like that bc they r weird little things (hallucinations and anomalies- anomalocaris straight up means strange shrimp) but personally i think they r wonderful. look at these artistic reinditions
heres hallucigenia
Tumblr media
heres anomalocaris
Tumblr media
forever emo over the fact ill never get to see these things but i hope if the egg theory is real then i dont just live as every person that has ever and will ever exist but also every living creature so i get to experience life as one of these little creatures. little might be a bit of a strong word to describe anomalocaris though, as it was the largest predator in the cambrian oceans. it was around 30ish cm long i think?? which for that stage in the development of life was fucking massive. hallucigenia for example was like 5 and a half cm AT A MAXIMUM. bro could fit comfortably in my hand. i could hold it close and gentle. idc if the spikes r gonna poke me I WANT TO SHOW IT LOVE! the closest i could get to ever being able to hold one of these (aside from fossils) is to get myself an anorith plush bc anorith is based on anomalocaris i think. i think??? or it might just be generic prehistoric bug thing. like a trilobite. I ALSO LOVE TRILOBITES. i just love prehistoric creatures an ungodly amount. i just love paleozoology and i think these weird looking things are so cool

Velociraptor Profile
Tumblr media
Scientific Name: Velociraptor mongoliensis
Time Period: Late Cretaceous
Location: Djadochta Formation, Mongolia
Length: 1.5 - 2 meters (5 - 6.5 meters)
Weight: 12 - 18 kg (26 - 40 lb)
Diet: Other dinosaurs, small mammals and reptiles
Exhibit: Velociraptor Dunes, Gobi Desert
As everyone knows, Velociraptor is not what the famous movie Jurassic Park would have you believe. Rather than a ‘6 foot turkey’ it instead a turkey-sized dinosaur that was discovered in 1923 by Peter Kaisen of the American Museum of Natural History. With two known species and dozens of specimens since, the Velociraptor was a decently well known species before the de-extinction process.
Velociraptors are surprisingly not pack hunters, preferring to hunt alone rather than with a group. However, they are known to create small alliances with other non-mate individuals in the event of a shared interest, such as stalking down a group of young pterosaurs. Mainly solitary aside from mates and young, the Velociraptor is a feared predator by many, but prefers to sleep the day away in a cool cave.
The Gobi Desert Exhibit in New Horizons has two Velociraptors in it’s enclosure; a lesbian pairing in fact! Living in their recreated habitat along with any in-need young from other paleozoological locations, Ot and Tengri spend their time playing with their enrichment items and hunting the rats we release in the enclosure for them to feed on. Tengri is also an Animal Ambassador, as depicted in the picture above! Come see them soon at New Horizons!
Reference Images Used! DISCLAIMER: Yes I traced. Sorry, but I can never get proportions right. ALL THE RIGHTS OF THE ORIGINAL DRAWING GO TO THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS!!! I used the outlines and then made my own adjustments. I WILL BE ADVANCING MY ARTWORK AS I CONTINUE, AND LIKELY REPLACING THESE OLD OUTLINES WITH NEW ART THAT IS MY OWN

A fun project with prehistoric stuff!
The concept of having a zoo or zoo-like park filled with prehistoric creatures is not a new concept. Still, I’ve tried my hand at it, using inspiration from the wonderful https://huxley-paleozoo.tumblr.com/ and mixed with my own stuff I’ve worked on before. So please welcome the concept area for New Horizons Paleozoological Sanctuary! Hopefully this is something I’ll be able to complete 😂😂 https://newhorizons-paleozoo.tumblr.com/

Drawing recreating a social anxiety moment I had in school with a friend
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember I kind of idolized my high school friend. She seemed to have all the traits I was lacking. She was confident and adventurous, I was neurotic and timid. She was logical, I was disorganized. She was athletic, I was uncoordinated. She was an honors student, I was an underachiever. When I heard she was interested in paleozoology, I had the idea of creating a zoology club so we could have an excuse to be friends. I remember admitting to a counselor I was assigned to at the school that I thought I might have had a crush on her, and the counselor asked if I wanted to tell her that. Which I definitely did not, because I honestly wasn´t sure what opinion she had on LGBT community and she was raised Christian. We have kept in touch over the years since then, and the gender and orientation of either of us hasn´t come up. It´s weird, she´s probably one of the only people I have not brought it up to. I remember once my step-dad making a comment that he though she was a ¨man in a woman´s body¨, but I never asked her opinion on that because I thought it would be rude.

Calling it paleozoology to paleozoologists' face to cause problems on purpose (if paleobotany is called that then it's not just paleontology if you're only talking about animals)

I'm just thinking about the fact that megafauna was so normal for such a long time and how much I want to witness that. Like the awe these giant beings must have inspired and the feeling when one was taken down by our hands. I don't know, but if I were to start believing in a god, it will be with a small community, stuck in a vast world with beings that seem to fit whereas I do not. Just megafauna, guys
