found an old google doc i made of my favorite bat species. you should suggest more species for my list pls
ID:
A post describing 6 types of bats as follows:
Northern Ghost bat
Angry face
Primarily eats moths and apparently likes to sing while doing so. Fuckin superb you funky little ghost bat
Desert long-eared bat
What's he so happy about???
Apparently they get scorpion stings to the face a lot but it's okay because they just don't care and swoop down to eat them whole (stinger and poison sack included) off the ground anyways
So actually he's probably happy about all the scorpion murder he commits
Pallid bat
Ears
Greater false vampire bat
Can apparently eat like anything. Bugs? Yes. Frogs? Yes. Birds? You bet.
Like straight up cannibalizes bats smaller than it.
Kind of a killing machine overall really
Wrinkle faced bats
Ugly but full of love
has a flap of skin they use as a facemask when they nap. Fancy.
Their weird skull structure lets them eat a wider range of food than most other bats. So that's rad.
Frog eating bat.
They eat frogs
Fun at parties. Always brings fun food (frogs)
End ID.
(thank you @friendlybat for the ID!!)

California now has an official state bat: the Pallid Bat (Antrozous pallidus).

Pallid bats are very cool, they're immune to scorpion venom after all, but there are literally two different species of bat found in California with California in their name that I would have expected to be named state bat before the Pallid bat.
California myotis (Myotis californicus)

California leaf-nosed bat (Macrotus californicus)

Cute bat emergency
📷: Lindsay Wildlife Experience
This is a Pallid Bat. They live in the Western US and in Mexico.
They are so cute I want to throw myself into traffic.
Pallid bats eat mostly insects and regularly eat half their body weight every night.
They are so cute that I feel the need to fall to my knees and scream, scream, scream forever.
Pallid bats will capture their pray on the ground and then take them back to their roosts.
When I look at this picture, I cannot stop myself from making that toothy smile right back at this bat.
Pallid bats will fly close to the ground when hunting, 1-2 meters above the earth.
I feel so emotionally invested in this bat that I feel it deserves a monument. A mural. A sculpture.
Pallid bats eat the most venomous scorpion in North America, Arizona Bark Scorpions.
The feeling I am feeling when I behold this bat is called "cute aggression".

The pallid bat is known for its unique habit of feeding almost entirely from the ground. Unlike most other North American bats, this species captures little, if any, prey while in flight. With its huge ears, it can detect insects simply by listening for footsteps, and it can respond accurately to a split-second sound from up to 16 feet away.

I don't remember following you at all but I'm very happy to have more bats on my feed. What is your favourite bat?
I have several, depending on different categories. My favorite bat that lives in my area is the evening bat (I have a trio I refer to as the Three Amigos who come every summer). Pallid bats are my favorite desert dwelling species. Painted Bats are my favorite bat in general. Cheeto.

Not a rodent, but bats are called fledermaus in German, which translates to "flying mouse," and I don't have another blog where this might fit, so call it close enough?
This female pallid bat is being examined by a licensed professional for scientific purposes, adhering to strict standards to prevent stress, injury, and zoonosis. She looks scary but the open mouth and bared teeth were all for show. She was actually pretty chill and cooperative during her exam.
She was released shortly after this photo was taken.
