CHAPTER FOUR

The captain clearly considered that for a moment, then turned to more fully face him and asked, "Do you not want to be here, Knight Kenobi?"

Well, that was a loaded question, Obi-Wan considered as he folded his arms a little tighter together, where he'd had them resting in the well-practised Jedi stance of arms clasped in front of him, hidden by the large sleeves of his borrowed robe. "It is not about my wanting," he said in as bland a tone as he could manage. "The barracks are intended as a safe space for you, where you can relax; I can't imagine the introduction of a, hm, nat-born is of much comfort to the troopers, no matter what I may have brought with me."

Carver sighed. "Right. First, everyone was warned you were coming before Stone sent you the directions."

Ah, so CC-5869 was Stone.

"Second, the main hallway and common areas like the refectory are considered fair game for other battalions or visiting nat-borns to poke their noses in. If you tried getting into any of the dorm rooms without an explicit invitation, then you'd be invading a safe space."

"Ah," Obi-Wan breathed. That was...fair.

"Third," Carver stressed, "as far as command is concerned, you're our Jedi. That means everyone's just going to have to get used to you."

That Obi-Wan, admittedly, wasn't certain what to do with. Somehow, despite his intentions, he'd still managed to get adopted by an entire battalion of clones.

Carver turned back towards the queue of clones, their awe and hope and bursts of delight filling the room, pushing away the pervasive sense of absence. "If that's a problem, the easy solution would be to stop pretending to care."

It felt like he'd been stabbed in the chest, a reminder of every moment of inadequacy—imagined or otherwise—throughout his life dropped at his feet like it didn't matter that he had the power to hurt them the same way he'd once been hurt.

He stared outward, letting the warmth filling the room buoy him, soothe away the edges of hurt, and somehow his voice came out collected when he said, "I don't make a habit of abandoning other beings, Captain; if the Coruscant Guard want me to piss off, you'll have to be explicit about it."

broke: megamind mispronounces words because he's weird and/or was given inconsistent education

woke: megamind mispronounces words bc he reads frequently and sees words he doesn't hear used in everyday conversation

bespoke: we see megamind's pronunciations get challenged often -- metro man corrects his pronunciation of "metro city", ditto minion for "stewart" and megs even corrects himself when pronouncing "school" to maintain his cover with roxanne. we see him go on to say "stewart" correctly, but keep mispronouncing "school" and "metro city". his mispronunciation is a conscious choice -- he's saying words the way that feels right to him and is unwilling to bend the knee about it. the only exception is someone else's name, arguably out of respect for other people's identifying traits

miscellaneous things i appreciate about wendell & wild:

-the nuance built into kat’s punkness. yes, she absolutely is a contrarian rebellious teenager, but it’s also genuinely how she’s always been. it’s not portrayed as rebellion for rebellion’s sake, it’s kat’s way of reasserting her identity and her connection to her parents when she’s spent years having her choices stripped from her.

-how many of the characters like kat. raúl sees a kindred spirit. siobhan wants to be her friend and is being kind in the way she knows how. sister helley reaches out to her even before she becomes a hell maiden. wendell & wild are in awe of her. ms. hunter doesn’t let her position prevent her from treating kat like an individual with agency and importance. it’s heartening that kat, a character defined by guilt both personal and state-issued, is coming into a setting where people genuinely want to see her thrive.

-the future sequence where it’s revealed she stays in rust bank and helps restore it to its former glory made me cry. it’s what they all deserve.

-no one has any “it’s my style” excuses for whitewashing when w&w gave us a litany of black characters with individually distinct features.

-even the demons have more emotional intelligence than your average corporate CEO.

-“you don’t get to smack me”

-when all that’s left of the memory monster is the memory of losing her parents, kat hugs it, letting it dissolve into her. she’s acknowledging that the choices she’s made and the things that’ve happened to her have gotten her to this point, but she’s absolving herself of the guilt — embracing her past instead of hating herself for it.

-raúl’s struggles as a trans boy aren’t framed as oppression porn. siobhan’s accidental deadnaming is just that — an accident— and undoubtedly one she’ll learn from in the future. his mother supports him without reservation. kat doesn’t even make note of it. they could’ve easily added catty smiles, tired sighs and “wait, you’re trans?” moments, but they didn’t. raúl is a human being whose transness informs his life without being crushed by it.

-siobhan’s arc is wonderful. she doesn’t become kat and raúl’s personal savior, she doesn’t angst over what she has to do, the story never becomes about her — but she uses her position (read: her class privilege) to do what she can. she becomes part of the solution.

-i know the last two points read like “duh, everyone should be doing that” but it’s such a relief to have a film get these things right, unapologetically so and without a core of virtue signaling. it’s nice to not have the stories we want told held for ransom, then declawed by producers because pissing off uninspired rich people would be bad for business.

Thanks for your answer (it was well worth the wait)! First of all, yippie for continuing Rough Awakening - I've reread it a few times and still love your take. In regard to the SWR parallels: Though I like fics that reunite Cross with TBB, I think a long redemption arc is much more meaningful and - if well executed - would illuminate the struggles that weren't shown by Kallus' redemption arc. There's a lot of potential for powerful story-telling (1/2)

Aww! 😊🥰 I´m glad that I didn't lose you as a follower during my absence. And yes!! Long, well-crafted redemption arcs are the best! I also wish we had had that for Kallus but we might have it someday. There's a post in my queue for today or tomorrow that says that since Andor and Ahsoka are having their own shows, Kallus needs his. That way all known Fulcrum agents have a show. I wholeheartedly agree!!! Can you imagine? They could show everything we didn't get to see in Rebels. Anyway, sorry, I went off the topic.

You're right, my confidence in the TBB writers to pull that kind of storyline off is not the best. There are some issues that irk me with what they've done so far. It could improve in season 2 tho. I'm hoping for the better, but I'm preparing myself for being disappointed, just in case.

Crosshair is such a complex character that I could go on and on about each of his layers. Again, you're right. Part of his motivation is to prove to everyone that he's the best. Many can see it as arrogance, and certainly, there's some of that. But I think it goes much deeper than that. To me, that implies self-esteem issues as in If I'm not the best then I'm nothing. And he's not the only one with similar thoughts, I might add. Both Rex and Echo had said a similar thing ("We're soldiers, what else is there?"). Isn't it ironic that, out of everyone in the BB, Crosshair who despises the regs is the most similar to them?

Anyway, Echo and Rex don't take that sentiment as far as Cross does, but we can only imagine how his cadet days were like. Just as any clone, not meeting the Kaminoans' expectations meant death at best and reconditioning at worst, and even when the batch had "desirable" mutations, they were not exempt from that threat. The trauma of that has Crosshair in survival mode 24/7. Even now. It's that so, that he says it to Hunter in 1x15, that they'd be safe with the Empire. He wants them all safe.

As for which scene confirmed to me that Cross has still the chip in, nothing major. Just a voice-over of him saying YET AGAIN "Good soldiers follow orders". Granted, it could be a voice-over from season 1, but why use it on the trailer? Why do they insist on that, a phrase that means that the clones are controlled if Cross isn't being controlled anymore? It doesn't make sense! the only explanation I can find is that Cross in fact still has the chip. I will die on this hill until I get 100% confirmation, via scan done by Azi3 or Tech. And even then, I might ignore it 🤣. In the GFFA everything is possible, so if Palpatine somehow returned, Crosshair can still have the chip.

"What if something is wrong?" Omega asks no one in particular, stopping halfway through her path. "They should be done by now."

Hunter approaches her and goes on one knee to get to her eyes' level. "Nothing is going wrong, ‘Mega. Dr. Kinall and Azi are taking care of Crosshair. He'll be fine."

"But they're taking too long. It was faster when we were on Bracca."

"Probably because there's no surgical pod here like in the cruiser's medbay. The doctor and Azi have to go by hand and hence why it’s taking longer."

"Echo is right. They're going slow because they're being careful. We just have to be patient, okay?"

Omega looks at them in turn and huffs sadly. "Fine!" Then, she returns to her pacing. Hunter and Echo share a worried glance. Even when their arguments to pacify Omega are true, it's hard to ignore her concerns. Same concerns have crossed Echo's mind as well.

Tell me what you love most about Kylo!

This was also asked over a year ago at this point and I think I let it sit because I really wasn't sure how to answer it. It's really hard to describe, ultimately, what Kylo Ren means to me that I haven't already tried to describe with over 400k words at this point, haha.

Just one of the things I love most about him is how confident he is of his own ability - he connects with the Force in a way that is effortless and natural, and he commands it with such authority, even abilities that would be overwhelming for other Force users.

The other thing I love is that I truly do believe he has a compassionate heart within him, even if he's tried to silence it. And I think that it's such a defining quality of his that it's impossible for him to fully eliminate it.

Those are just some thoughts. Thank you for the ask. <3

i’m sorry but seeing that tiny pride flag in one of the boxes backstage regardless of who took it and knowing louis performs a song every night that resonates with his queer audience just makes me think about how much has changed since 2013. how unfathomable this would’ve been just two years ago actually. it’s really nice to take a step back and look at these things and notice the progression that’s been had in his image with something that has been isolated from him for so long. so so excited for him.

hiiiiiiii so i wanted to tell my closest friends before talking about it publicly but uh i won a radio contest yesterday. i’m meeting louis next week :( i’m eating lunch with louis next week :( it still doesn’t feel real, but i’ve been an emotional mess since i found out. i don’t know how to comprehend it honestly like!!!! i can’t believe it’s happening after all these years?? i’ve been thinking about 16 year old me and how much i gravitated towards him as i grew older. how much solace i found in him as i grew older. how out of touch the thought of meeting him even was back then and :( i really needed this news right now and i’m just really happy and grateful and yeah 🥺✨🕯 i cant even process it.

My #1 post of 2022

i’ll write a more in-depth post later but:

written all over your face: a mixture between grunge-rock and pop-punk. the guitars were absolutely insane. such a fast heat. you guys are not ready for this song in particular. she’s the main character of this era 1000% pop punk princess

face the music: think early 2000s pop punk. very similar to written all over your face, but much more condensed. the bridge was phenomenal. a chanting “WHOA WHOA WHOA” that is definitely a crowd moment. we were racing around each other during that part. reminiscent of reliant k, cartel, jimmy eat world.

Saturday: A sadder track. it’s one of the best ballads he’s ever written. his vocals were incredible. the bridge of saturdays has such a soaring quality to it, and it builds to his high vocal moment.

all this time: very tame impala 2015 very fuzzy synths. very driving down the highway at night. it’s just a steady alt-club hit.

the departure of sound from walls when it comes to FITF is insane like i know he said it was different, but it truly feels like FITF is it’s own animal. it feels entirely louis. it just exudes such a punkier edge both in sound and in feel. this is his record
