As I revisit old childhood favorite television shows, I couldn’t help but laugh myself sick at a thought -
Ben Tennyson is a Puckett through his mother. What do we know about Sandra? Nothing. She’s free real estate in terms of creating her background, so what if she’s a Puckett, related to Sam Puckett by being Sam’s aunt, younger sister of Pam Puckett?
And what if Pam and Sandra are still close despite their going different directions in their life, and so their kids are also close? And so every summer before that road-trip and most holidays Ben would go to visit Sam in Seattle?
Just imagining Ben using the butter sock on his enemies -

Sitcom Characters Who Fear They Have Been Cursed With Bad Luck
Arriving on the doorstep yesterday was a small package that looked eerily like the one which had come just a few weeks before. It, too, was addressed to my daughter, so I brought it in and placed it on her bed.
When she arrived home and tore open the package, it revealed a case for her cell phone. I was surprised because she had just ordered one earlier in the month, and she had always been fairly cautious with her money.
After some prompting on my part, she explained that she had experienced nothing but bad luck since purchasing that other case. She described that accessory as being cursed, so it had to go.
Her belief in items causing bad luck reminded me of all of the television shows that have episodes based on a character's belief in a jinx or a curse. Even though I can recall thirteen such shows, it might be safer to stop the counting at seven. Here they are.
Freddie Benson from iCarly
His trouble-laming friend Samantha Puckett played several pranks on Freddie to cause him to believe he was cursed with a run of bad luck, but the boy gets even with her at the end of the episode.
Skipper from Gilligan's Island
After finding the buried head of an ancient  Click Here totem pole, Skipper (played by Alan Hale) experiences several mishaps he blames on that relic.
Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show
After breaking a chain letter sent to him from Goober, Mayberry's fearless deputy (played by Don Knotts) assigns every trivial accident on his disregard of that communication.
Michael Scott from The Office
The manager (played by Steve Carrel) of the Scranton branch of the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company declares that the office is cursed after he runs over Meredith in the parking lot, Anglea's cat Sprinkles dies, and Pam's computer gets infected with a virus in an episode titled "Fun Run."
Archie Bunker from All In The Family
The head of the house at 304 Hauser Street (played by Carroll O'Connor) fears he has been jinxed after he loses a chain letter without having sent it on, in spite of his daughter and son in law's insistence that there is no such thing as superstition.
Radar O' Reilly from MASH
After Colonel Potter (played by Harry Morgan) orders a reluctant Radar to remove a spirit pole, the medical camp seems to suffer several accidents. Potter refuses to call it a curse until he stabs himself with a scalpel and Hawkeye breaks a mirror.

I could so easily write for both Glee and iCarly at the same time based simply around the fact that Jane Lynch is in both shows. Nobody at McKinley knew that Sue has identical twin daughters until something happens and they show up at the school, confusing absolutely everyone because if this is pre-s4 then 1) Sue has children??? and 2) one of them is almost an exact clone of her in the sense that she’s mean, insulting, and physically aggressive always while the other is the kindest, girliest person to exist and 3) they’re both really good singers so Sue is now forcing Will to let them join glee club even though they definitely aren’t legally enrolled at McKinley
Tell me that doesn’t sound like a plausible episode of both Glee and iCarly. Tell me.

you mentioned sam’s home life earlier- can we hear your thoughts on that?
Tumblr media
(previous iCarly posts: 1 - 2 - 3)
hell yeah, let’s dig into what we know about Sam Puckett.
firstly, unlike many of the other characters in this show, Sam’s absent parent is actually mentioned! (shocking, right?)
Sam talks about her father a few different times, but every time she does, it’s...not good. and, it’s always a part of a joking and/or snarky comment about something else.
one example is in s04e10 (iParty With Victorious). in this ep, Carly says (about a guy she’s worried might be cheating on her), "He told me I'm one of a kind!" and Sam responds with, "Yes, and my dad once told my mom he was coming back!"
another mention is in the finale (iGoodbye) when Carly asks Sam’s opinion about her going to live with her dad, and Sam says, “Dude...if my dad asked me to spend some time with him in Italy, I’d say - well, first I’d say ‘Oh, so you’re my dad...’ - and then I’d go.”
between these snippets, we can see a clear (but upsetting) picture - Sam doesn’t know who her father is, and it’s because he abandoned her.
cool, so, off to a dark start! but don’t worry - it only goes downhill from here.
a major part of Sam’s character is her love of food - and that’s great! it’s cool to see a female character have that personality trait, because that’s pretty uncommon. but although her relationship with food is often played for laughs, I think there’s a serious concern here that nobody in the show really talks about.
Sam raids the Shays’ fridge almost every time she comes over. Sam hoards food in her pockets, and reacts violently when people try to take food away from her. Sam eats very quickly, to the point where it’s almost dangerous.
these signs all point to one thing: Sam has experienced food insecurity from a very young age.
I mean hell, Sam and Carly’s very first interaction with each other happened when Sam tried to steal Carly’s tuna sandwich, because she didn’t have a packed lunch of her own (shown in a flashback in s01e17).
and when Sam got a decent amount of money for the first time in s01e18 (iPromote Tech-Foots), she hired her own personal chef. why, you may ask? because (and this is an actual quote from the episode), “Well, my mom doesn’t feed me...”
unrelated rant: speaking of s01e18, it’s absolutely wild to me that this show had an episode where the moral can be boiled down to “1. don’t take money to promote products that you haven’t personally used, and 2. smart technology is often dangerous or, at the very least, unnecessary.”
back then (in 2008), it seemed like kind of a weird thing to teach to children, but considering how influencers and sponsorships and easily-exploitable smart tech have flourished in the years since, I feel like more people probably should have taken that episode’s message to heart...
anyway, back to the topic at hand. here’s something you might have forgotten: Samantha Puckett is not an only child! she has a twin sister named Melanie who shows up in exactly one episode (but is mentioned in a few others).
Melanie is everything that Sam isn’t - she goes to a fancy boarding school, she gets good grades, and she’s the only mentioned member of the Puckett family that doesn’t have a criminal record. and here’s something else we know: Melanie is their mother’s favorite child.
this actually comes up in s04e02 (iSam’s Mom) when Sam’s mother (played by Jane Lynch, by the way!) yells at Sam, “Why can’t you be more like Melanie?!”
we can see from all of this why Sam hates Melanie so much - she’s spent her whole life being compared to her, while at the same time being raised very differently. Sam was abused and neglected by their mom, and had to fight to survive - but it seems that Melanie didn’t have those same struggles.
I’m not saying that Melanie had it easy (I mean, they were both born on a bus, and did probably have some shared trauma from when they were young), but at the very least, being at boarding school meant that she escaped a lot of their mother’s anger and neglect.
personally, I’m of the belief that Sam’s mistreatment stems from her mom’s own self-hatred. on some level, Pam Puckett hates herself, and so she takes that out on the child that most resembles her - Sam - while rewarding and praising the child that she most wishes she could be like.
it’s fucked up. Sam’s entire life is fucked up...which is why she needs Carly as much as she does.
when Sam and Carly met, they were 8 years old, and both of them had already been through so much. Sam’s mom was neglectful and abusive, and Carly’s mom had died. in the show they’re painted as polar opposites, but it’s not really surprising that with their shared trauma, they’d find in each other a deep and lasting friendship.
I think Spencer saw that too. he saw this scrawny, angry little 8-year-old trying to fight her way through life, and he knew that he had to help her. that’s why the Shay fridge is always well-stocked for when Sam comes over, and it’s why he doesn’t really mind when he finds her in their apartment when Carly’s not home.
I know I talk a lot about Spencer Shay, but I really think that he’s the glue that holds this entire show together. he may be a big goofy man-child, but he’s also the main role model for three kids, only one of whom he’s related to. sure, he’s done some weird and messed-up stuff, but I truly cannot shut up about the good that he’s done, and the impact he’s had on these kids’ lives.
and speaking of...
Tumblr media
I see this ask, and I appreciate it. I’m still convinced that Spencer’s closeted for a reason (as I mentioned in my other post), but I do think that Spencer would see Sam and know that she wasn’t straight. the queer energy just bleeds off of her, mixed in with all of the anger and desperation that’s kept her alive.
the real question is, does Sam have the self-awareness to realize this about herself?
maybe. I like to think she does, especially near the end of the show. the signs have been there from the start: Sam got jealous almost every time Carly had a boyfriend, or even another close friend. she once got a job at the Pear Store just because Carly said that Freddie looked cute in his uniform. if Sam spent a moment in introspection, I think she’d figure it out.
but I also think it might be hard for her for another reason: she’s never really seen what a healthy relationship looks like. all of her friends’ parents are either divorced, widowed, or otherwise separated, and Sam’s mom is...I mean, she’s a mess. Pam Puckett’s been engaged eighteen times, and she’s fucked so many Italian guys that Sam learned how to speak fluent Italian, and yes, that is a canon fact (s04e01).
even when Sam dated Freddie, it was awkward and forced. they were basically two kinsey-5s trying to turn their mutual hatred for each other (and maybe even their mutual crushes on both Shay siblings) into a relationship, and when things got tough, they crashed and burned.
my point here is that when you haven’t seen healthy relationships, it’s harder to figure out if that’s something you might want. and if you do want it, it can be hard to reconcile what you’re feeling with what you think society expects from you, based on the relationships that you have seen.
and it’s not just about dating - Sam hasn’t seen many examples of healthy behavior in general. most of the adults in Sam’s life either ignore her, treat her like a criminal, or are themselves criminals! when it comes down to it, the only good adult role model that Sam has is...Spencer Shay.
Spencer knows that Sam is a troublemaker, but he never once tries to stop Carly from being friends with her. Spencer encourages her interests, offers her advice, and helps her out when things are rough - like the time she was having recurring nightmares about soup being stolen from her (which again, ties back into the food insecurity thing).
and in the series finale, Spencer gave her what is maybe the most important gift she’s ever received - he gave her a way out. he gave her that motorcycle, and told her she had a good heart, and that set Sam free.
Spencer saw the kindness (and the queerness) in her, even under the layers she’d built up to protect herself, and he gave her a way to carve her own future.
because of this, Sam got one of the happiest endings in the show. although her future was uncertain, she got to escape her abusive mom and create a new life for herself, under nobody’s terms but her own.
I just think it’s neat.

PLEASE go off about the parallel arcs in iCarly, I never noticed them and I am fascinated
Alright, so it took me some time to organize my thoughts here, so I’m sorry about the wait! It turns out I have a lot to say. You made the mistake of sending this ask to a former English major, so this has turned into a bit of an essay. To make it hopefully easier to digest, I’ve divided this up into three parts. Part one is going to be a more general overview of the parallels between them, part two is going to look at specific episodes that serve to emphasize these parallels, and part three is where I attempt to tie it all together and make some kind of point here.
Under a cut, because it got seriously long.
Part One:
This first bit is pretty obvious, I think, but I’m saying it anyway. Sam and Freddie both come from dysfunctional single-parent households. The show loves to point out their dysfunction whenever it can, to wringe comedy from it. It’s different for each of them, of course. For Sam, her father abandoned her, and she is neglected by her mother, and as we see in iSam’s Mom, Pam Puckett is verbally and physically abusive. For Freddie, his father is never mentioned, and his mother is controlling and emotionally abusive, restricting every aspect of his life and violating his bodily autonomy in the name of “taking care of him”—Marissa’s behavior may not come across as blatantly toxic as Pam’s, but trust me, it is.
Sam and Freddie also deal with their home lives in very similar ways. First, and most obviously, they both run away. It’s a running joke that they’re always at the Shays’ apartment. Just think about that for a moment. They both spend as much time as they possibly can away from their homes, at the end of the day, neither of them wants to go home. In this way, iCarly becomes an escape for both of them and in some ways a lifeline. The Shay apartment is a safe space for them, where they are free from their dysfunctional home lives.
The other coping mechanism they share is obbsessive behavior. For Freddie, it’s technology. For Sam, it’s food. They throw themselves into their respective interests/hobbies, building their personalities around them. I think for both of them these intense interests are reflective of their dysfunctional upbringings. Marissa is obsessive and controlling, and Freddie is interested in technology and videography—tools that can be linked to surveillance and control. On top of that, the internet is a way for Freddie to have freedom while trapped inside, given the scope of what one can do online. Sam, on the other hand, is obsessed with food, and it seems to me this comes from her mother's neglect. At one point, we see the lunch Pam packs Sam for school, and it’s a brown paper bag with batteries in it. Sam, who doesn’t always know if her mom is going to be able to feed her, eats as much as she can elsewhere.
But the parallels between Sam and Freddie don’t end with their parents. They also share similar social issues. Neither one is particularly well-liked outside of Carly. Freddie is a nerd and a geek, especially early on, and Sam is intimidating and aggressive. For both of them, you can count the number of friends they have on one hand. Sure, Freddie is in a lot of clubs, but we only see those characters every once in a while, when it’s convenient for the plot of an episode, so I doubt that Freddie is particularly close with them. They’re not the kind of people who would be popular if it wasn’t for iCarly.
And this affects their romantic relationships, too. Unlike Carly, who is shown easily flirting with boys and going on dates, Sam and Freddie seem to have worse luck when it comes to relationships. This is probably most exemplified by the reveal in iKiss that neither of them has kissed anyone, something that not only surprises Carly, but is presented as being embarrassing and shameful within the internal logic of the show. The expectation is that by their age, they would’ve kissed someone, and they’re behind their peers, behind Carly.
And this leads us very nicely into part two of this analysis, where I’m looking at specific episodes. (I put iKiss in part one because the other episodes are pairs, rather than singular episodes that parallel them)
Part 2:
I’m going to do this in chronological order, which means starting with season one, episode nine, iWill Date Freddie. In this episode, Freddie dates a girl named Valerie. At first, she seems to really like him, but by the end of the episode, it becomes clear that she is only using him. Valerie wants to create her own web show to compete with iCarly. It frames Freddie as someone who wouldn’t be able to get a real date. This episode is also important because it features the first moment where we see Freddie standing up for himself, when he feels underapperciated by Sam and Carly, which I will touch on more later.
Sam’s parallel episode is season one, episode fifteen, iHate Sam’s Boyfriend. Sam dates Jonah, who I think genuinely likes her a lot, and she likes him a lot, so much so that she begins to blow off iCarly to spend time with him. By the end of the episode, it becomes obvious that Jonah is kind of a tool, especially when he tries to kiss Carly. The episode frames Sam as someone who attracts obnoxious guys, and as someone who is always going to be in Carly’s shadow romantically.
Both of these season one episodes are about basically the same thing at their core: dating someone who turns out not to be what you thought they were, and showing Freddie and Sam as two people who have bad luck when it comes to romance.
I already talked about iKiss, but I think it’s worth mentioning again because it really does show just how much they have in common. The episode didn’t have to be written the way it was, and I think every choice they made was extremely deliberate. When Sam and Freddie talk on the balcony, once Sam has apologized, and Freddie realizes that Sam wasn’t lying when she said she’d never kissed anyone, they share a moment of complete understanding. Despite their apparent differences, they’re struggling with the same social pressures, and the same loneliness, if we’re being perfectly honest. And they both come up with the same solution to it, at the same time. It’s a really beautiful moment of vulnerability, and it comes from their similarities being made explicit.
I’ve talked a lot about their romantic relationships in this section, so it’s time to get back to those dysfunctional home lives, which we get some parallel episodes about later in the show. First, in season three, we get iMove Out, so named because Freddie moves out. He reaches his limit with Marissa’s controlling and overbearing nature, and he gets his own apartment. Sort of. The resolution of the episode is that he agrees to move back in, if she agrees to give him more freedoms. And in season 4, we get iSam’s Mom, an episode where Sam gets so fed up with Pam and her neglect and abuse that she moves in with the Shays. The episode ends with Carly taking Sam and Pam to therapy and trying to get them to work out their issues.
Both of these episodes show the characters eventually forgiving their parents, because this is a sitcom, and the status quo must always be achieved by the end of the episode. But both episodes also showcase the toxicity of Marissa and Pam very well, and show that Sam and Freddie both want the same thing: escape. The difference is that Sam seeks stability (the shays) and Freddie seeks freedom at any cost (his tiny horrible apartment). It’s the balance of their similarities and their differences that creates such an interesting and complex dynamic.
But why does any of this matter? Who cares if Sam and Freddie have all these parallels? Why am I reading so far into a Nickelodeon sitcom from 2007? Well, it matters a lot, actually, and I really want to try to explain that as best I can. Hopefully it makes sense and I’m not just Charlie Day in IASIP in front of the conspiracy board.
Part 3:
Sam and Freddie are narrative foils. I don’t think this is a hot take to the people who know what that means. If you don’t know, foils are characters who contrast each other. Oftentimes this takes the form of a hero and a villain, or a hero and their sidekick. Arguably Sam and Freddie are both Carly’s sidekicks, and while you could say that Sam is a foil for Carly, I don’t think you can say the same for Freddie. The key purpose of a narrative foil is to highlight something about the other character—the name comes from foiling gemstones to make them shine brighter. Sam and Freddie do that for each other (Sam highlighting Freddie’s nerdiness, pragmatism, organization, and book smarts, Freddie highlighting Sam’s aggression, messiness, and street smarts), and Sam does it for Carly (Sam’s tomboyishness serving to emphasize Carly’s girliness), but Freddie doesn’t really do that for Carly.
And we could leave it at the very basic observation that Sam and Freddie are contrasting characters. But the whole point of this is about what they have in common, not the things that make them different. It’s a lot more complex than that. They aren’t just opposites, they’re paralleled opposites. Two sides of the same coin. They challenge each other, but they also understand each other on a level that none of the other characters can, and they know it, too. When they break up in iLove You, they acknowledge the special “connection” they have. And I think because they have the paralleled arcs, them being together makes the most satisfying narrative for them, the one where they could grow the most.
Now, remember what I said about coming back to Freddie standing up for himself later on? Well, it’s later. In my opinion, the crux of Freddie’s arc—or what should be the crux of Freddie’s arc—is him learning to stand up for himself. Freddie starts the show entirely under Marissa’s thumb, but he also lets himself be manipulated by Carly, and pushed around by Sam. And as the show progresses he doesn’t just learn to stand up to his mother, he learns to stand up to Carly and Sam, to respect himself, especially when his crush on Carly fades. In iSaved Your Life, we see Freddie choose to end his relationship with Carly because he knows she isn’t actually in love with him. Season one Freddie never would’ve done that. And it was Sam who pushed him to do that, it was Sam who made him realize that Carly loved him for the wrong reasons.
On the flip side, I believe that Sam’s arc should be about allowing herself to be vulnerable. She has had to fight to survive for so long, and has put up wall after wall to protect herself. She rarely lets herself be open with her feelings. Even when we know she must be hurt at the end of iHate Sam’s Boyfriend, she doesn’t show it. She just physically injures Jonah to get back at him. We see more and more vulnerability from her as the show progresses, with Carly, but just as often with Freddie. My favorite example of this is in iReunite With Missy, when she confides in Freddie about Missy trying to sabotage her and asks him for help. Before this, the only time she was vulnerable with Freddie was in iKiss. And Freddie does help her, giving the school at sea trip to Missy to get rid of her.
Going back to Sam and Freddie being foils, we can see that in both of these situations the show uses that to propel their respective development. In other words, they help each other grow. And I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking, but these arcs are the exact opposite. Freddie is learning to stand up for himself, to be tough like Sam, and Sam is learning to open herself up, to be emotionally available, like Freddie. And yeah, sure, maybe on the surface. But both of their arcs can be traced right back to those dysfunctional parents. The reason Freddie needs to learn to stand up for himself is that his mother never let him, and the reason Sam needs to learn to let people in is that she could never rely on even her own mother.
And the reason they’re able to help each other grow is because they understand each other. For Sam, Freddie is a safe place for her to be vulnerable, the stability she seeks, as much as they fight, she knows she can trust him. And Freddie understands her insecurities and loneliness, understands that underneath the rage, there is hurt. Because he’s felt that same hurt. And for Freddie? Sam is the freedom he seeks. She understands what it’s like to be pushed around, to feel helpless. It’s why she works so hard to be tough and intimidating, so she doesn’t have to feel that way.
There are a lot of flaws with the seddie arc, but in my opinion, the biggest one is the decision to have them break-up because she’s too abnormal and he’s too normal. It’s just not true. Yes, they are very different. But they are also very similar. And the way for both of them to grow the most is with each other, because they can both understand each other and challenge each other.

Casey’s Family (2012 Headcanon)
I consider it a CRIME that we never got to meet Casey’s family. They were always mentioned but never seen.
All we know is that he lives with his dad and his little sister (and possibly hinting that his parents are divorced)
So I’m gonna give my headcanons on Casey family, mainly his dad and sister:
When there are mission (aka episodes) that Casey is not in, its because Casey and his sister are visiting their mother out of town. Their dad has custody but they always visit their mom every so often.
Casey’s little sister’s name is Angelica but she goes by the nickname “Angel” (comic/03 reference). She’s younger than the turtle, being 12 years old, and she’s the tomboy type. Angel is just as reckless as Casey but more mature than him in a way. She likes to tease him constantly and be a brat, but she means well. She likes skateboarding and video games.
Angel is aware of Casey’s double life as a vigilante and his mutant friends long before he even told her the truth.
Angel always teases April and Casey, saying they act like an old married couple. She bursted out laughing when she found out Casey was ‘losing’ April to a turtle.
After the Tatsu fight in Season 5 that sent Casey to the hospital, his dad and sister came to visit him, wondering how he got so badly hurt. That was when Casey had to tell his family the truth about his secret life and his mutant friends that he and April hang out with all the time.
When Casey’s family finally did meet the turtles, they weren’t that surprised, saying “They’re not the weirdest thing you brought into this house.”
Casey’s dad is a sketchy business man so he always working, having Casey in charge of Angel most of the time. Casey’s dad, personality wise, is a mix of Pam Puckett (ICarly) and Grunkle Stan (Gravity Falls), aggressive, a gambler/con-man, and a bit immature at times but he’s still a good father who does his best to put his family first.
Raph thinks Casey’s dad is a badass and looks up to him as a role model. They actually get along really well.
Angel likes to pick on Raph cause seeing him get angry is funny to her, meanwhile Mikey and her are good friends, mainly for their love of skateboarding.
Casey’s dad likes the turtles and actually thinks Casey is less likely to get into trouble (and get arrested) if he’s hanging out with Raph and his brothers.
