Intro to Khujand

After crossing the border into Tajikistan, we drove to our destination - city of Khujand (also Khojand) about 2 hours away.  One of the oldest city in Central Asia, dating back 2,500 years, it was once called Leninabad during Soviet Times.  Located on the mouth of the Syr River in the Fergana Valley, it was one of the major city along the ancient Silk Road.

With only 2 nights in Khujand, as soon as we arrived a few of us tackled the jam-packed itinerary by visiting the Sheikh Massal ad-Din complex and the Panjshanbe Bazaar while the rest continued on to check in at the hotel.

At the Sheik Massal ad-Din complex, we were only stopped by the Friday mosque that’s being renovated and visited the Panjshanbee Bazaar.

One of the biggest market in Central Asia, Panjshanbee (which means Thursday in Tajiks) Bazaar is one of the best-stocked market in Central Asia.  Built in 1964, the building is elegant with its arched portal entrances and pink and lime green neoclassical facade (above).  Since, it was later in the day on our visit, most of the vendors have packed up.  However, there were still some around to selling their goods.  Pretty quickly, we found the Tajiks people are very friendly, willing to talk to us and show their products.  Unlike other Central Asian markets so far, we were allowed to take pictures at Panjshanbee Bazaar. 

As it so happens, the melons were in season:  watermelons, cantaloupe looking ones, honey melons and others that unique to Central Asia.

Adventures. Panjshanbe rests after an extraordinary day. As melting ice opened the river to dangerous flows, we let the yacks cross by themselves and move further on, our companions on their backs. Facing the choice to either add perhaps another two hours climb on the adjacent cliff or get wet by -15°C, Panjshanbe insisted to choose the second option. After a while, he simply took off his plastic boots and started moving on, challenging me to sit on his back. "I've done this so many times, come on it is fun," he confidently added to my surprise and laugher. Bare foot and with just a long wooden stick, me and my backpack on, he walked through. I remember his calm tone, soothing when the current destabilised his hold, "it's all good, we're there." In the evening he started shivering, admitting being a bit cold when asked. Paracetamol and stronger medicines eased the pain and we moved forward the next day. How many times had I to witness people's strengths and hardships, Panjshanbe being recognised by all as exceptionally strong. Apprehension Panjshanbe senses the ground to cross the frozen river. Ahead and behind, the ice opens in unstable drifts. The flows running beneath roar at both other ends where water reaches the surface again. Loud cracks break the silence and resonate in the narrow valley.
