While it makes me happy that potential new fans will get to experience Thousand Year Door, it makes me sad how overlooked the first Paper Mario is. I mean even in Paper Mario discourse the first one only gets mentioned along with Thousand Year Door as “good” Paper Mario games, but no one really talks about the first one. After mentioning both, they just go straight to showering Thousand Year Door in praises. Heck Nintendo probably noticed this too, either that or they might think since the first one is already technically on the Switch, that it’s okay to skip it.
Personally it’s our favorite one. It just feels the coziest to me, and the atmosphere in some locations are so ethereal. Can you imagine how beautiful Shooting Star Summit, Star Haven, Flower Fields, Crystal Palace etc would have looked (Not that they need a glow up) No one also wants to mention how it has better level design than its sequel, which goes for a more linear approach (To be fair I guess that’s subjective, if you do prefer linearity) However both games do have backtracking, but I personally feel it can be more annoying in TTYD, because of its straight forward level design.
I could say more on what I personally prefer, but in the end I just don’t want people to ignore/dismiss it even more. For those who plan on getting TTYD for a new experience, I highly recommend not skipping the first one. Also I do love TTYD, the first 3 Paper Mario games were very important to my childhood, and they all will always mean a lot to me.

Day 270: Lady Bow (Paper Mario N64)
Once I got my hands on the Nintendo Switch Expansion pack, I thought I was gonna spend all my time on F-Zero. But no, I played paper Mario on a whim, and I can’t put it down! I love this game, and all of its characters are excellent! The only paper Mario i’ve played before this is Sticker Star, so take that as you will.
But yeah! I just wanted to draw Lady Bow! I like her a lot!
