A Veritable Aviary of Birds and Pollinators by The Paper Ark Are Small Enough to Perch on the Tip of a Finger
Nayan Shrimali and Venus Bird, of The Paper Ark, approach conservation and environmental activism on a tiny scale. The artists (previously) create miniature renditions of flora and fauna that harness the textured, buildable potentials of paper to showcase the beauty and singularity of threatened and endangered species.

Christine Kim.
Extraordinary recent paper sculptures by Canadian artist Christine Kim which will be on view at Galerie Youn in Montreal beginning June 4th, 2022.
“The mixed media collages,” says Christine, “constituting the ‘Paper Thin’ series feature details both precise and delicate. Figurative drawings are surrounded by a dense layering of painted patterns, cut paper florals, and wrought iron crowns. The pieces evoke dualities of strength and vulnerability, as stark black fences crown the regal female figures, but these barriers are, in the end, only paper thin.”
“The central figure in each piece is sparsely painted, offering an elegant silhouette against a background of paper elements that speak of an interior life. Protected by a fence, sheltered by walls, each figure is nestled in this domestic setting. However, the wallpaper is torn, revealing wooden slats and vines. And yet from this brokenness, flowers bloom.”

Product packaging, the unheralded shop skill. 😄
Almost as much fun as creating art is figuring out how to package and ship it. You need to make packages lightweight, sturdy, practical, eco-friendly, creative and cost efficient. And pretty!

“The Patient” (2021)
Handmade paper, monotype, and found object installation
In the context of medicine, what does it mean to be born “different? How is the helpless body of the deformed, defective, or debilitated patient regarded by the doctor? Is it tragedy from the beginning? Is it the justification for a benevolent surgeon’s science experiments? Contending with questions about my own medical history, the Patient asks: what does it look like when your body isn’t your own? How does it feel?
Viewers were encouraged to enter past the gallery's glass partition and handle the folder of documents, which contained copies of medical records of consultations, physical exams, and surgical procedures that I experienced from ages 4 to 6. On the cover and nestled between the pages of documents are a series of monotypes responding to the events.

Julia Ibbini, courtesy of Heron Arts
The United Emirates-based artist sources elements from Islamic geometry, embroidery, meenakari enamel work, and even electronic music to inspire the designs that compose her laser cut paper works. The complex patterns and layers of her colorful compositions are a metaphor for the artist’s multicultural background as a dual national from Jordan and the UK, and share elements of symbolism seen in the Middle East region. Ibbini uses computer algorithms to create digital designs that she laser cuts onto paper. She then layers these detailed pieces and hand-paints them with ink.
