Hello!!👋
how do you know and draw butterflies and moths so well? Do you research the species or read about them in insect books??
I wanted to ask for some advice and tips on how to draw them, if it's not too much trouble
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sorry that this was so long but I do hope that this helps with breaking down the main physics in both Moths and Butterflies to help you out with drawing them!

Under the wing and above the wing. Same species, same individual… I think it is the most beautiful butterfly in the world.

Sharing this here cause I don’t know where else to share it
Tumblr media
I’ve been totally nerding out and keeping track of all animals and insects and whatnot I’ve been seeing, and then separating them into their taxonomic places and I just wanted to share somewhere (:

hi! do you have a favorite kind of bug? if so, what is it?
I have several that I really like so I'm gonna make a list of them! they're not really in any particular order, they're just kind of a group of favourites. I think this is gonna be mostly lepidoptera lol.
1. Sphingidae just in general, but especially Elephant Hawkmoths, Death's Head Hawkmoths, and the Pacific Green Sphinx. the two brown caterpillars we had last year were Elephant Hawkmoths and I still can't believe we actually got to raise some
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image sources: Elephant Hawkmoth, Death's Head Hawkmoth, Pacific Green Sphinx)
2. Lycaenidae are also one where it's just a whole family of lepidoptera we like (a friend mentioned them and we looked them up and were like "oh they're amazing" and they quickly became a favourite). I especially like the subfamily Polyommatinae (the Blues), with some of my favourites being the Friday's Blue, Melissa Blue, Holly Blue, and Western Pygmy-Blue. a lot of them have really interesting interactions with ants, such as relying on them for protection, but I know at least one species (the Large Blue) actually eats ants as a caterpillar

(image sources: Friday's Blue, Melissa Blue, Holly Blue, Western Pygmy-Blue)
3. Hesperiidae, also known as skippers, are another one where I love them just in general but I think the Fiery Skipper is probably one of my favourites. they're just very cute and they kind of remind me of hawkmoths but they're in the superfamily Papilionoidea so they're actually a type of butterfly
Tumblr media
4. the Sargasso Emerald is one of my favourites just because I think it's a cool little dude. look at this funky guy
Tumblr media
5. the Vapourer/Rusty Tussock is another one of the species we raised last year and I didn't know much about them before raising one but they have very distinctive looking caterpillars and the adults are sexually dimorphic to the point of looking like completely different species. the caterpillars are known to eat a huge variety of plants which is really convenient when it comes to raising them. I also love tussock caterpillars in general because they're all so fluffy and funky looking
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image sources: male Vapourer, female Vapourer, caterpillar)
6. I feel like I should include cicadas on the list because I just think they're really cool and I'm fascinated by periodical cicadas especially
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image sources: aberrant Cassin's 17-year Cicada, Common Cicada)
7. given that we're called the Ant System I think I'm contractually obligated to include at least one ant and I want to introduce everyone to the absolute little weirdos that are honeypot ants. some members of the colony store food in their abdomens and then regurgitate that for the other ants when needed. I think they're just fascinating little guys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image sources: Mexican Honeypot Ants, Myrmecocystus)
8. I almost forgot to include these little guys but carpet beetles are going on the list because I see them a lot and I think they're pretty cute little guys
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image sources: adults, larva)
anyway I feel like this is a good list but I've probably also missed so many species that I absolutely adore and I keep stumbling across new ones that are really cool.
I've also been fixating on aberrant lepidoptera recently which isn't really a favourite kind of insect so much as just me being fascinated by all the ones where the colours or patterns are different to what you'd expect for that species

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Butterfly pea, Blue pea
Tumblr media

Poems of an Emissary
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have had dreams that are not dreams. I’ve seen impossible pillars without end, fields without a horizon stretching infinitely in all directions in a void of fabulous and fantastic color, fragmented edges fitting together in unknown geometries.
Bridges wrought of the natural and unnatural link some of these pillars, twisting and spiraling in tight and loose knots. But they do not join to me. I am disconnected. From where I stand, I can’t see the horizon nor curvature. I stand on an isolated island and I am filled with a feeling of emptiness and hunger. Something is missing, not just from me but from everyone, and within myself I feel the chasm sprawl and its depth mushroom. My mind growls insatiably and I am overcome with desire, clouded and deafened, suffocated by need.
Claustrophobic, I step forward into nothing and I feel bliss.
An external bliss from something other.
It fills me and my abyss is quelled, my famine fulfilled.
I awake with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face.
I haven’t eaten in days.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have seen that which has yet to happen. I can remember that which will never exist. Surrounding me is the rapid and sullen scurrying of motes of reality, slowly meandering towards an inevitability revealed only to me. Her path twisted and distraught, echoing her unfelt emotions, reverberating endlessly in a hall made of pure crystal. Monotonous and without pattern, clicking at rigid intervals in the absence of rhythm.
For each, a thousand beginnings are etched into the pellucid walls, testing the limits of distance but close enough to touch.
For each, a thousand endings are shattered in flashing beacons of welcome, leading to a home with no destination; to a place never left.
I recall these walls of transcribed beauty but I’ve never seen them before. My eyes will never leave them, as I focus on a pinprick so impossibly small that she is virtually imperceptible: she reveals everything to me. But I will never be there to hear her.
The walls melt as if ice, slick with potential and possibility. I drown in the unrealized. I stand atop the discerned and peer down through their complexities as if they were the simplest of all creation.
Forward and backward, everything shifts around me as I gasp and struggle for my first breaths. This is where I die at the end of my unconceivably lasting life.
Every day I wake I am born anew and every night I sleep I die once more.
I will remember every death but forget every birth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my hands, I hold the impossible.
I made him. From my hands. With my hands, in my hands.
He shines and rotates and I’m not sure what he is supposed to be. I have made him, but he is not mine; he is his own. The light refracts in impossible angles as he spins in my palms and I can see him flex against his constraints. Without halting his dance, he faces me and I can see in multitudes his countenances on a sheer pane of translucent silver.
An erect parallelogram with too many sides, he opens his flanks and spreads his wings of stained glass and reveals to me his sacred geometry. Ever more he flares his pinions, unfolding from endless crooks and bends, infinitely expanding from within the tiny prism in my hand. In all directions he relaxes and fits within my tender grasp and proclaims his unending dimensionality of the Iridis Papilionoidea.
Fractals of colors I cannot comprehend ripple in tandem with the particles of the universe and they frolic hand-in-hand becoming as one but unique.
With him still in my embrace, I watch him be accepted as creation. He is part of the Realm. He is a part of me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I descend the steps to the Dead Beyond and at the bottom rests a shattered vessel of polished obsidian, pulsating with the reflection of an unknown light. In phases the light shifts from slivers to salver, from brightness to blackness.
They have invited me to the infinite cosmos and it is small. Without walls or structure, I stand with the monumental beginning.
I am without form; I see without eyes.
I exist in the absence of nihility.
Myself and the cosmic seed.
From within the grave of pitched stone threads of silver, gold and nothing emerge in vast and complicated webs that encompass this realm. Encompass me.
Like sand and steel and the comfort of night, I am suffused with them and their secrets.
They as three stitch themselves to me and become my very own foundation, wrapping and warping as if skin; a membrane of us.
And I have become manifest. And with it comes purpose.
The Beyond is Alive and the Cosmos is Vast.
We exist as one as the Black Moon dies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forged in the medium of dreams, We have become Realm, Emissary of the Moonspawn. Seeker of the Truth of Void, Matter and Time.
We are Awake now.
