which tda book is your favorite?
Lord of Shadows slightly edges out Lady Midnight although they’re really close since I love both so much… but LoS has the overall most impactful arcs and storylines to me the section in the Unseelie Court is probably my favorite part of the series, and the ending packs a big emotional punch to say the least. It might be my favorite tsc book period actually I really love LoS. Also like I just said in the previous ask I tend to be a middle book(s) or middle seasons girlie it’s just who I am. I think this book struck a neat balance between being character driven and plot driven that was extremely effective although to be clear it would probably also be my favorite if it was just character centric filler angst about Emma&Jules because that’s who I am… but I’m still glad it was more than that! LM is also wonderful in a way that few first books in fantasy series are to me usually there’s a slow burn for me to be really invested but not here, and the whole murder cult mystery with body horror (had forgotten about the missing hands that made it even better) + forbidden romance + familial dynamics themes combo and vibe really works for me. Qoaad is my least favorite of the three but I still really like it, and I definitely thought far better of it on reread compared to when I first read it since back then I had been anticipating it so hard and theorizing etc. and had very sky high expectations (especially with Clockwork Princess being a rare perfect finale to me and with how much I loved the first two tda books I hoped for Qoaad to accomplish the same thing..) on reread I could evaluate it more for what it is and I came to the conclusion that about 80% of the actual content of the book I am a fan of, it’s just that the pacing of the book is insane. Genuinely if that book was split into two books and they were paced normally I’d have loved them as much as the first two I think! Genuinely I think cc has gotten too attached to trilogies as the sole structure for her work and it’s a big part of why the receptions for her last two finales have been what they are … (well I’m sure there are multiple factors at play but I’m confident that’s one of them) also maybe even effected tmi part 2 because I remember cofa being pretty filler and the plot there feeling like it could be resolved in a duology? I love almost every individual storyline in that book so if you asked me which ones I would snipe for the third book to be paced correctly I’d be hard pressed to get rid of things but if you split it into two books and grounded them each tonally to feel distinct and just gave us some breathing room I think you could stick the landing! But since I like almost every individual element of the book it’s an enjoyable reread when you already know where the story ends up and the best parts of it really work for me / get a level of emotionality from me no tlh or tmi book does so it still ranks high (like #6ish since I like all the tid books more as well as first two tda) for me, I slander her but she’s my bestie <3.
#s speaks#myhouseofivyandstone#so to answer your question Lord of Shadows lol#tda#tsc#asks#I think it’s the same deal with Chain of Thorns objectively btw the issues are more about pacing than content. But then it was the opposite#for me with that book since I wasn’t actively theorizing or anything so I don’t think I went into it with much expectation and I liked it#more than most of the fandom. But I’m curious if I were to reread those books back to back if it would be the opposite and I’d be more#negative on a reread? tabeling that thought for the future#the role hype and expectations have in a reading experience. not to be underestimated#the best part of qoaad is definitely what it has to say about grief which I can also appreciate more now because#sadly my loved experience over the years since I first read the book mean that those resonate more with me now. Especially these methods fo#exploring it in a paranormal/fantasy media#but it is objectively something that makes it an odd finale because there’s a lot of other things at play. Which is why I think there shoul#have been another bigger book to delve into those themes and Thule Livvy and switch-off Jules and everything. And then another book about#the main political storyline and parabatai curse (and there would be overlap ofc but as main areas of focus)#I wonder if that might have been why there’s such a lack of willingness to give Any time to characters grief in ChoTh. Like she went too#hard in the other direction#the dark artifices

forever amazed at how cc accidentally wrote will and jem being in love. like in the text theyre explicitly in love but then afterwards on tumblr she was like no that was not how i intended it but it's ok if you interpret it that way :) (after which she did write it into the text explicitly but whatevs) like how do you accidentally do that how does that happen how do you write the words "jem is my great sin dont talk to me about jem" and not mean to imply anything HOW

the last hours was actually so tragic. like maybe it’s the edwardian london thing that makes it seem more tragic to me but damn all that miscommunication made them all so LONELY and isolated when they didn’t have to be. in tid even when will thought he was cursed he had jem, and even when he was being awful to tessa she still had other people in her life like jem and sophie. jem and tessa had no family, but they had people they talked to and shared their fears with. in the dark artifices, they’re this really strong family unit, the tragedy is horrible but there’s a network around them all (blackthorns + emma + kit) so no one’s really alone.
but in the last hours like….these kids HAVE parents and friend groups and supposed best friends even, yet they seem more isolated than any other series mains. james doesn’t tell anyone about the gracelet and what he went through (fair enough bec it was terrible and traumatising). but then it’s not just that. cordelia isn’t telling anyone what she’s going through. lucie isn’t telling anyone what she’s going through (trying to bring someone back to life???) – and they’re supposedly best friends and future parabatai! and matthew isn’t telling anyone what he’s going through, not his parabatai either, and no one wants to address how visibly he’s suffering. and grace, she’s actually alone. and it just seems so lonely and sad and they all seem so isolated even though they shouldn’t be, because unlike the tid and tda mains, the tlh lot actually have parents and their own homes (for the most part). the start of chain of thorns especially is just really painful because they’re all suffering ALONE when they all have people around them they just don’t bridge the gap. it just feels so lonely which is almost ironic bec what about the friendship of the merry thieves and the parabatai bonds and best friendship?

I went to the Chain of Thorns tour tonight!
As promised, I saw Cassie today and wrote down her answers (paraphrased) to the questions asked to share here with you all -- and I asked her a question of my own, too!
It was a spoiler-free event, so those of you who have not finished or read any part of Chain of Thorns can read on safely :D
Question: Was it intentional that a Lightwood dies in every series? [referring to Max (TMI), Benedict (TID), Robert (TDA), Barbara (TLH)] Answer: No, it was not intentional and not planned to be that way. But there are so many Lightwoods. In retrospect, it sure looks like it, doesn't it?
Question: What was your process of creating Grace Blackthorn? Answer: Grace is a parallel of Estella from Great Expectations, as The Last Hours is a retelling of that story. I wanted a character to be an embodiment of "explanation not an excuse." I also wanted to give Estella the chance to tell things from her perspective, which is never revealed in Great Expectations. So Grace is that character who is able to display the other side of that situation through her point of view.
Question: How did you come up with the parabatai curse? Answer: It's a greek work and when I learned the meaning, I was immediately interested in exploring the power of non-romantic love. That's where the concept of parabatai came from. The curse then stemmed from expanding on what it means to be parabatai and who could and could not have one. That is where the curse came to be, and of course, how it became a focal point of TDA.
Question: How can I find a man like James Herondale? Answer: I asked myself the same question when I was younger: "Why aren't men like men in books?" I met my husband at a book club and we began sending books to one another that we liked. So my advice is to find a boy, girl, person who enjoys books, too.
Question: Who is your favorite parabatai pair? Answer: Will and Jem.
Question: Who in The Last Hours was the easiest to write? The hardest? Answer: The hardest characters to write were Grace and Matthew, as they both faced very complex problems that don't have an easy or single solution. The easiest characters to write were Cordelia and Lucie. Lucie, because she is also a writer and I very much had a passion for it the way I did when I was younger, too. Cordelia was easy to write because she was fun to write. (Bonus: The most fun to write is Magnus.)
Question: Who is your favorite character from each series? Answer: Didn't want to answer at first, but admitted the following: TID is Tessa. TLH is Lucie. TMI is Simon. No answer for TDA.
Question: Who in TLH was your favorite point of view to write from? Answer: Alastair, Thomas, and Lucie.
Question: Will we ever see Jace and Clary again in a prominent role? Answer: They will be in The Wicked Powers, but the story focuses on Ty, Dru, and Kit, so prominency will remain with them.
Question: How did you develop Ty [Blackthorn] and who was your inspiration for him? Answer: My stepbrother, who always said he looked for characters who exhibited similar characteristics as him, but it was never the same as having a character who was also autistic, and used the word, too.
Question: What made you decide to make Coredlia Iranian? Answer: I was born in Iran and Farsi was my first language. I can't speak it fluently now, but I wanted to make a character that incorporated that part of my life. To make her character and her family's characters, I had a group chat with my mother's friends, who were a bunch of 80-year-old Iranian women. They were very happy to help. Sometimes they argued amongst themselves about a question I had and who had the correct answer, and I would just sit back and watch it unfold while a little scared.
Question: Is there a plot line or detail you look back on and regret doing? Answer: THE FAMILY TREE. [She went on to explain that when she first made it, she had no intention to write any other historical book. But she got the idea for TLH while writing TDA, and suddenly the path and story she wanted to tell did not align with the already-published family tree. So basically, my theory was right and we have confirmation from CC herself that it's just a result of premature development!]
That was the last question of the night, but I saved the question I asked her myself for last! I asked her if Cecily and Gideon had official birthdays, and if so, if we would ever learn them, since we know the rest of the TID cast's birthdays from the 10th anniversary birthstone cards.
Her answer: I never told you guys their birthdays?! I have what I call the Bible and it contains everything about all the characters like their birthdays, star signs, etc. So yes, they do have birthdays. I don't remember them off the top of my head, but I'm sure it'd be no problem getting it out to you guys. There's no reason for not.
So, yes, they do have birthdays, and if she remembers that I asked, we might find them out very soon!
I had a great night and there were some hilarious answers to questions that weren't TSC-specific, but I simply just cannot write that fast.

I am very interested in their relationship, although most likely their friendship was very toxic. Did Luke even realize that Valentine had betrayed him before, even before he handed him the dagger and told him to kill himself? Valentine betrayed him when he framed him, he betrayed their friendship, their parabatai bond... And after that, Luke didn't hate him. And after that, it's Valentine who accuses Luke of betrayal! Ah, I want a story about them!
A little reminder: Luke realized he was in love with Jocelyn when Valentine started dating her. The curse of the parabatai "one woman for two"?

TLH/TDA Cover Parallels and Analysis
The TSC cover poll by @kaitcreates made me realize how the TSC covers are so well intertextually connected between each other, especially the TLH and the TDA ones. So, I analyzed them.
Tumblr media
We have Cordelia on the cover of Chain of Gold, while Emma, who is her descendant, is on the cover of Lady Midnight. The tone of TLH is warmer autumn colors compared to the blue and green (like the sea, an important symbol of the series and LA) hues of TDA. Also, the way the characters pose is different: Cordelia is standing before a palace's gate, supposedly, the London Institute, and she's starting her new life, Cortana ready to slash whatever comes her way. Emma, on the other hand, seems like drowning and Cortana is slipping from her hands. At some point of the story, both had to give up on their precious weapon.
Tumblr media
Chain of Iron features Lucie facing a forest at night which has colors I associate with winter, the season in which it should be set. The moths are a symbol of change, mystery of the night, and death/endings and you can understand why they were on her cover. Coi ends with Jesse's soul disappearing after Belial is cast out of his body. But it's also a beginning because Jesse comes back to life by the end. And it all matches perfectly with the cover of Lord of Shadows, with Julian on it. I think we can safely say that Julian is Lucie and Jesse's descendant. The mood is very dark and he's also underwater like Emma. Water is a symbol of life but also of chaos and healing. In Qoaad, Julian turned off his emotions in order not to fall deeper for his parabatai Emma and endanger both their lives because of the parabatai curse. He holds the Blackthorn sword which we know it's destroyed in CoT, while Lucie holds the Blackthorn locket. The LoS ending matches the CoI one because in the former Jesse comes back to life, while in the latter, Livvy dies. She was the Blackthorn character that until her death wore the Blackthorn locket, which was worn by Jesse before he gave it to Lucie. Full circle, again with the descendants!
Tumblr media
Cordelia faces a pretty London palace on CoG. Lucie faces a dark forest full of unknown creatures. On the Chain of Thorns cover, Grace faces a place in ruins (Blackthorn Manor?). The colors of this cover give spring vibes and in fact, if we consider the epilogue, it ends in spring, the season of new beginnings and where everything blooms again. While Emma and Julian are in a place underwater where they can be saved (they aren't too deep), the last character featured on the Queen of air and darkness cover, Annabel Blackthorn, has pretty much sunk to the bottom of the ocean and she is beyond saving. We can tell from the Titanic-esque ruins behind her feet that she's hit the bottom, literally and figuratively. Annabel was angry because she was brought back against her will, and in her fit of anger, she ended up killing Livvy and she lost her life for good after. Grace has the opposite features as Annabel, and for good reason. While Annabel can only go back to the world of the dead, Grace has a change at getting her life back and start anew. We can say both Annabel and Grace shared a similar fate: their so called Blackthorn "parents" manipulated and abused them and they both lived half a life. Unlike Annabel, who, I said, is at the bottom and is hopeless and gone for good, Grace facing the ruins of the place were she used to live also means starting anew. Starting from the bottom, from the ashes, but in the hopeful way. It means finally living the life she wants to live.
I know that "the last hours" is taken from Great Expectations and is also a quote Magnus says. But this quick analysis also brings to the surface how the last hours could indeed be the last moments of sadness and desperation, before getting through and making it out alive. In comparison, TDA's tone is darker but it also shows that humans are able to survive the worst and going above water to breathe again after tragedy and tough life choices they have to face.

Starting off my birthday month by giving y'all some ✨ pain ✨
This whole fic is based on one angsty movie dialogue and Thule Malec......so you know double pain 😊
*********
"Do you ever wonder what life would be like if we were ordinary?" Magnus asked, staring at the ceiling.
They were still lazing in bed even though it was already mid-morning. The previous few mornings had been spent like this, wrapped in sheets and talking about the most random things, until one of them got hungry enough to get up and make breakfast (or in Magnus’s case, summon it). No one knew they were back from vacation already and neither Alec nor Magnus was in any hurry to tell them.
"Ordinary? Like if we were mundanes?" Alec asked.
"Yeah, because I do".
This piqued Alec’s curiosity. "And what do we do in our ordinary lives?" he asked.
"You do a regular, boring 9-5 job, I wait for you to come home and give me attention”.
Alec chuckled. “What else?”
Magnus turned towards him and raised himself slightly. “On the weekends we do laundry and taxes. Maybe host a barbecue once in a while".
“And who does the grilling?”
“You of course,” Magnus replied sunnily. “Or maybe Jace or any of our other friends. But not Isabelle”.
“Not Isabelle,” Alec agreed. "Do we still live in New York?"
"We could live wherever,” Magnus said. “New York, London, Florence, Mumbai, Tokyo, anywhere. Any special preferences?"
Alec shook his head. "Any place is fine as long as it’s you I wake up next to. Whichever city, whichever country, whichever universe".
Magnus smiled. “Alexander Gideon Lightwood, you will be the death of me,” he said and kissed him for a long time.
~~~~~
The memory felt like a lifetime ago. Alec wished he could go back to that time when life was so simple and the only thing he had to worry about was how to keep Izzy and Jace away from trouble or how to get the glitter out of literally every surface in the house.
But the world as he had known had changed completely. Sebastian Morgenstern turned it into his playground. Demons roamed freely, mundane numbers were dwindling and Shadowhunters were either Turned or killed or barely managed to escape. There was personal loss too - his mother was missing, his sister was dead and his parabatai was worse than dead.
His sister had died killing Sebastian and his parabatai’s very soul had been corrupted by him.
And then there was Magnus, on his knees in front of him, begging to be killed.
“You have to do this Alexander,” Magnus pleaded. “There is no other way”.
“There has to be another way. Tessa and Ragnor are still searching, they could find something that….they could find something”.
“Even if they do, it will be too late,” Magnus said. “I don’t have any more time left”.
It was true. The blight had started affecting warlocks all over the world. One by one they were all falling ill and no cure had worked. Magnus, being an Eldest curse, was affected the most.
Alec kneeled so he could be at eye level with him. Magnus was beyond exhausted. His bones were jutting out and his usually beautiful face was pale and sunken.
Magnus clasped Alec’s hand. “Alec, my brave archer boy, I know I am asking a lot from you but I can’t see myself turning into a monster,” he said, tears welling up in his eyes. “For centuries I have kept my humanity intact, trying my best to not let my father’s blood taint the good in me, trying to not give in to evil”. He shut his eyes as if in pain and whispered “I can’t fail now”.
A teardrop rolled and fell on Alec’s hand. “Look at me Magnus,” he said and lifted Magnus’s chin. “Look at me and listen to me, you are kindness, strength, humanity, and patience all wrapped up in one person. All your life you have helped people and saved lives. Even if they didn't deserve any of it. You are not evil. You never will be”
“I wish it was true Alexander. I wish that was my reality right now. But when this illness takes over my body, everything you said about me will vanish. I won’t be part human anymore and I would rather die than lose my humanity”.
Alec knew that. Magnus’s humanity had made Magnus what he was today. It was what Alec had fallen in love with first. So how could he see it leave his body? How could he deny him his last wish?
“Is this what you really want?” Alec asked in a small voice.
“Yes I do,” Magnus said. “You know why it has to be you right?”
“I know,” Alec replied. “I just wish we had more time”
“I wish that too. Maybe it's possible in another universe”.
“Maybe in another universe, we have a different life, a happier one”.
“Like the one we talked about a few months ago?”
“Yeah, like that one,” Alec replied softly.
Magnus closed his eyes and touched his forehead to Alec’s. He pulled away after a few minutes and whispered “You have to do it now before anyone else comes”.
Alec nodded and slowly retrieved a knife from inside his jacket. With his other hand, he gently touched Magnus’s face. “Just so you know, in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you”.
Magnus smiled and kissed him with all the passion and love he could muster. Tears flowed down his face, mingling with their kisses. He gasped as the knife went in but didn’t move away.
They stayed like that in each other's arms until Magnus’s breaths became shallow. Alec pulled away and gently lowered him to the ground. Blood seeped from the wound and darkened the soil around him. Magnus opened his mouth to say something but he started sputtering and reddish-black blood spilled out. Alec made a move to shush him but Magnus stopped him. “Alexander Lightwood…. it has been an honor being loved by you,” he said finally and went still.
Alec closed his eyes in pain and let the tears fall. He wanted to do more than that. He wanted to scream, shout, break something, bring Magnus back but nothing would work. He had lost everything and everyone he once held dear. The only thing he was left with now was grief and pain.
Once upon a time, Alec had dreamed of changing the world so the people he cared about could live and love freely. But what was the point now if they were all gone? What kind of world would he fight for? And for whom?
It was one of the quickest decisions Alec had made in his life. He curled his fingers around the hilt of the knife embedded in Magnus’s body and pulled it free. He thought of his family one last time, of Clary who died trying to save the world, of Tessa, Ragnor, and Catarina who were desperately searching for a cure. He thought of Magnus, the man who made him come alive with one look, who made him feel deserving of love.
A world without Magnus in it was not a world worth living in. With that thought in mind, Alec plunged the knife into his chest. It stung at first but it was okay. This pain was better compared to the pain of living. He laid down next to Magnus, clasped his hand, and closed his eyes. At least in death, they could be together.
The last thing he saw was a vision of two boys standing in front of a door. One was a toddler, barely 2 or 3 years old, with blue skin and tiny white horns jutting out of his head. The other one was slightly older with unruly curly hair and a solemn expression on his face. The boys looked like they were waiting for someone. He heard them call out, then the image faded and darkness took over as if signaling the end.
Propaganda Beneath the Cut
Jem and Will
(spoilers)
Jem is literally the sweetest, most patient, most understanding guy ever. Will puts up this facade of seeming like a jerk or being angry all the time so that no one will love him (so that no one will die), and Jem just deals with it, knowing that something is going on in Will's mind. Will always called Jem "his greatest sin" and Jem always said "Will couldn't have faith in himself, so I had faith for him" AND IF THAT IS NOT BEST FRIEND BEHAVOIR I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT. THE SIN/FAITH COMPARISON GETS ME EVERYTIME. They both named their first borns after eachother (James Herondale and Whilamina Carstairs). Jem ends up becoming immortal for a while for reasons, and even 150 years later he says he still thinks of Will everyday. Jem also literally took up a quest that took him roughly 100 years to complete for Will.
Jem is the only person Will allows himself to be close to, for complicated reasons explained in the book (Long story short: Will thinks he's cursed so that anyone that loves him will die. Jem is already dying from a posion so if Jem dies it won't be Will's fault.). They met when they were young, and they chose to literally swear themselves to each other in the form becoming Parabatai, which are like, warrior pairs of best friends.
Okay so they have this thing called parabatai which is like platonic soul marriage and Jem kept Will alive for years and even though wills been dead for decades Jem still thinks about him every day:(
Charlotte and Tiana
Realizes that Tiana and Prince Naveen are in love and offers to help break the curse no strings attached even tho all she’s ever wanted was to marry a prince
For weeks Magnus has been willing to allow a great many things if it meant it got him Alexander. He finds now, on the cusp of losing him before he’s ever actually had him, that he’ll not allow this to continue on. The parabatai bond is clearly a parasitic one and he’s not willing to let Alexander once again risk his life so recklessly.
Magnus feels a small flicker of remorse — because a piece of Alexander will be lost forever — before he extinguishes it. It’s easily accomplished once Magnus remembers that the piece of Alexander he’ll be losing, is the only piece that will never belong to him.
After that it’s simple to run his hands soothingly over Alexander’s face and his neck. The door is locked a moment later and he summons a stele the clave would murder him for having. It’s an old relic, undoubtedly of incredibly historic significance to them. Magnus doesn’t care and he never has except that in this instant, its the only thing he needs. Magnus soothes his hand over Alexander’s torso and lets out a regretful sigh, he hates the very idea of causing Alexander any more pain, but this is for the best.
Alexander’s pallor grows but Magnus leans down and kisses him, an orb of magic gathering in his mouth and when his shadowhunter groans in pain, Magnus feeds the magic to him and then slips away. Alexander goes still as his heart freezes, caught in a trap as Magnus traps it in a different time.
Alexander’s body continues to live, tied to Magnus’ own heart as he breathes for both of them.
The parabatai bond flickers, confused and conflicted and Magnus scowls as he lifts the stele and he curses that he’d having to go this far. The stele lights up red and with his magic melding, turns a lurid purple that reminds him of his father. Magnus quickly sears a rune that he only knows from his early years growing up under the Silent Brothers… care.
It will not let a broken rune link it to the same person twice.  It was old and once used to end unions and marriages, Magnus doubts a single soul beyond a few Silent Brothers still know about it. It’s with a vicious pleasure that he ensures Jace will never again have a tie to Alexander’s soul.  Magnus then soothes a palm over the spot, whispering words that make his throat feel as though he’s swallowing angelic grace. Alexander’s color returns and Magnus hisses as his palm sizzles from the strength it’s taking to forcibly heal Alexander’s rune so it fades into nothingness.
He finishes and lets himself collapse over Alexander.
Tears of pure victory and delight come to his eyes and he lets them, bowing over Alexander’s chest as he unlocks time and lets Alexander’s heart restart. He presses his ear to the beautiful beat and sighs in contentment, tears still rolling down his cheeks when the door bursts open.  Izzy is there, Raj and Aldertree too and whatever Izzy did to stall them was enough, but by her frightened eyes its clear she doesn’t know that.
“Out—” Magnus snarls, letting the anger he still feels fuel him and pushing away his joy to call upon the anguish of causing Alexander pain. “I will not have you in here.”
“The criminal—”
“Alexander is no longer useful to your investigation.” Magnus spits and he beckons to Izzy who is staring at him in shock as she takes in Magnus’ tears. She gasps and Magnus winces, as if he hadn’t meant to mislead her, “he lives, Isabelle. But only just.” Magnus shakes his head and then sighs, “his heart stopped and while I brought it back, I don’t know when he’ll wake up, or if he will. The bond you so viciously demanded he tax broke under the weight of his search.”
Isabelle is across the room, on the other side of the bed and holding Alexander’s hand, looking miserable as her lip wobbles and tears run down her face. Magnus muses that it’s a pity she’s only this concerned when Alexander is already hurt and he stops them from approaching any further than he needs to with a ribbon of fire.
“I am not in a pleasant mood after restarting my paramour’s heart.” Magnus warns them, because he’s not pleased this was necessary even if he likes the outcome. “See the evidence for yourself and then leave.”
They do, grumbling a bit but Aldertree look worried, something nervous in his gait and eyes. As soon as the door shuts Isabelle is there, giving Magnus a hug.
“Thank you for saving him.” She gets out, but she’s sobbing as she does it and Magnus pats her back soothingly.
“I can’t let him stay here, not after this.” Magnus says, “they won’t let me linger forever and there is no telling what they might try. Or if they’ll give him the proper care.” Isabelle looks hesitant so Magnus quietly adds, “I worry about Aldertree, Isabelle. He is not a man who likes failure and he has failed badly here. I would worry too much, of what he would do to cover them up.”
Isabelle looks at him and then nods, hating to agree but knowing that Magnus isn’t lying.
“You’ll keep him safe?” Isabelle asks softly, hand petting her brother’s forehead and Magnus puts his hand on her shoulder comfortingly.
“He’s the safest he’ll ever be with me.”
Excerpt
When he got back to Magnus’ apartment with Jace and Izzy in tow, he was not surprised to see Rafael’s sullen face first thing as soon as the gate opened. His scowl quite suddenly turned into surprise when he saw Alec hanging from Jace’s shoulder because unfortunately his siblings were right and the venom worked a number on his body.
“Hello, you must be Rafael, we brought your teacher back in almost one piece.”
“Bobo” Rafael muttered and moved away from the door, allowing them to get in.
“See, that’s handsome in Spanish. Your student is already impressed by me.”
Alec, who didn’t know Spanish but had enough sense to know when someone was getting insulted, didn’t say anything. He would rather take deep breaths and let Magnus heal him.
Jace arranged him on the couch while Izzy asked Rafael to get Magnus and not tell anything in front of Max.
“Izzy give me something to clean his face.”
“Why?” Izzy asked, though already pulling out a handkerchief from her back pocket.
“His abs are gonna be on display, we make sure everything else looks good too.”
Alec closed his eyes, muttering every curse word he knew under his breath.
“Can you guys please just-”
“You’re right, you make sure his abs are displayed good, I’ll clean his face.”
“I am literally dying here.”
“You know how I hate when people use that word everywhere. You are not ‘literally dying, you are at a warlock’s house. He’ll heal you in minutes. But think, if we leave you like this, all dirty and sweaty, you will die of embarrassment. As your parabatai, it is my duty to give you best survival chances.”
Izzy had by now cleaned his face and was ruffling his hair here and there.
“Kill me now.”
“Not on my watch, dear Alexander.”
And okay, his siblings must be on to something as he felt grateful that they cleaned him up a bit considering how Magnus looked like a vision.
My VERY long rant on the Infernal Devices trilogy (specifically Herongraystairs)
Will, Tessa and Jem, it’s no secret that they are the best love triangle out there, but which ones better? In my opinion, I would love a threesome (kidding), but I love Jem as a character himself.
Let’s look at the way Tessa is affected by each character. Will Herondale is this mysterious boy who shares her love of reading and they bond over poems and a copy of A tale of two cities that he gives Tessa. He is cold to her and is very guarded and doesn’t open up until later on. The first time they met, Will was sarcastic and curious by Tessa. Her boldness surprised him and she thought that he was attractive. She was perplexed by what she felt and often chided herself to call him not by his christian name. There was a time when the two were walking and she experienced Will as his emotions changed because of the curse. There’s a letter that is given to her and this is it. “Tessa Gray Tess, Tess, Tessa. Was there ever a more beautiful sound than your name? To say it aloud makes my heart ring like a bell. Strange to imagine that, isn’t it — a heart ringing? But when you touch me, that is what it is like, as if my heart is ringing in my chest and the sound shivers down my veins and splinters my bones with joy. Why have I written those words in this book? Because of you. You taught me to love this book where I had scorned it. When I read it, I felt the most complete despair and envy of Sydney Carton — yes Sydney, for even if he had no hope that the woman he loved would love him, at least he could tell her of his love. At least he could do something to prove his passion, even if that thing was to die. I would have chosen death for a chance to tell you the truth Tessa, if I could be assured that death would be my own and that is why I envied Sydney Carton, for he was free. And now at last I am free, and I can finally tell you without fear of danger to you, all that I feel in my heart. You are not the last dream of my soul, you are the first dream, the only dream that I ever was unable to stop myself from dreaming. You are the first dream of my soul, and from that dream, I hope will come all other dreams, a lifetime’s worth.With hope at last, Will Herondale” So it’s obvious that Will can play his words and that he ends up caring for Tessa. It’s clear that Tessa feels attracted to Will because he was after all, the one who rescued her from the house that caused her pain and torment. In clockwork Princess, Will and Tessa develop a strong friendship and they attend parties together on mission and get to connect with each other. I think that if Will had opened up more to Tessa and hadn’t been so cold to her then their relationship wouldn't have been the same. Then there’s Jem Carstairs. He’s a drug addict whose life is ending. Jem is a quiet character who cares deeply for Tessa. They first meet when Tessa finds Jem playing the violin at night. She talks to him about his violin and how she met Will. Later on Jem admits that he’s sick and Will comes into the room when Jem starts violently coughing. Tessa is shocked and pity Jem because of his sickness and wants to know more about it, but couldn’t because Will stops her from tiring out his Parabatai. Like Will, Jem cares deeply for Tessa and writes her a song because he claims that Will’s the one with words. Tessa is emotional and feels their story in the notes that he plays.
What is Will’s ending with Tessa? Will and Tessa are the couple that finish off the series and in The Last Hour we see them happy and adorable as ever with two children, James and Lucie. The two of them enjoy each other's company and love each other more than words can explain. They share collected memories about Jem and often Jem is the topic that draws the two of them closer together. Tessa marries Will and loves him alot. Will does unfortunately die of old age holding Tessa and Jem’s hand. ON the other hand, Jem and Tessa are engaged and almost married in The Infernal Devices but Jem transitions into a silent brother so they aren’t allowed to marry. They do however meet for one hour every year and when Jem and Tessa meet once he appears mortal and the two start seeing each other again after meeting with each other for many decades. Jem and Tessa’s relationship is so sweet and their development is so nice. Tessa claims that both Will and Jem are the only people that she will ever love and the two boys loved her till the end Tessa and Jem have a daughter named Wilhelmina who they name after Will. The two of them also adopt Kit Herondale because they risk their lives finding the lost Herondlae bloodline. The two of them have a sweet and wholesome romance and I ship them so much.
This love triangle is unlike any I've ever read. Tessa, Jem and Will’s love triangle is such a well developed relationship that doesn't focus solely on love. Unlike most love triangles, the boys do not fight constantly to win over Tessa’s love. The two of them care for each other and they are Parabatai and they love each other unconditionally. The two of them have a strong built relationship and they support each other with whatever decisions they make about Tessa. So, unlike all the other love triangles,  the two of them are very supportive of their relationship with Tessa and the three of them never really minded each other. There was no battle and Will respected Jem’s love for Tessa and vice versa even after Jem died. THe three of them loved each other and this is why I would love for them to biome a threesome.
Will as a person:
He’s undyingly loyal and protective of the people he cares about. He has sarcastic humor and cares so much for Tessa. He pushed people away for his whole life believing that he had a curse that forbade him from loving anyone.  He cared for Jem only because he was already dying, but later on they have an unbreakable bond. He is welsh and has blakc hair and blue eyes. He has a sister named Cecily that he is very protective of. He ran away and lived at the institute ever since he was a very young kid.  Will loves books and is a very skilled fighter. His love of books and his ability to memorize poems were what brought Tessa and him closer together.
Jem as a person:
Jem carstairs is a soft and gentle soul. He cares for Tessa and they meet as he plays the violin. His kind humor and his ability to make anyone like him is honestly what makes him such a good character. He has silver hair as well as silver eyes because of the Yin Fen that he takes. The drug made him prone to death and he becomes a silent brother to preserve his life. Jem is a violinist and he comes from china. We don’t really know much about his parents except that they were killed and he has a living uncle. Jem manages to get Will to open up to him and they become Parabatai shortly after knowing each other. He loved Tessa and he was nearly married to her before he transformed.
Tessa cared for both of them very much and her love lasted even as they grew old. She told stories to Kit and Jace about Will and Brother Zachariah never stopped loving Will or Tessa. This is my rant about Herongraystairs and I honestly can’t stress about them so much. They have a well-developed relationship that continues through many years. Tessa lives life with Will in the 18-19 centuries but spends her modern days with Jem. Tessa and Jem love each other, but Tessa and will love each other deeply as well. Jem and Will have an unbreakable bond and they used their shared love for Tessa and understood each other.
Hello....If you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/manhwa/ anime/movies/tv series (can be canon or non-canon)? Why you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before....
Hope you don't mind if the same person ask a different questions. Thank you so much @metalandmagi .....
Funny you should ask, because I was just listening to a podcast episode about favorite fandom ships, and I had actually started making my own list that I was going to post anyway! And I don’t mind you asking, since I don't really have people to talk to about this stuff. I like looking at your blog and seeing other people’s answers too!
Here's my top ten! These are going to be kind of repetitive because I’ve already talked about these fandoms so much, but these are my favorite CANON SHIPS, meaning they’re actually together or at least have kissed or something. I have a million non canon ships.
10. Jem, Will, and Tessa from The Infernal Devices- I wanted to keep myself to one ship per fandom, but I couldn’t help it, I just love this OT3 so much. I don’t care what anyone says, they are a poly relationship, not a love triangle (and I maintain that if Jem wasn’t already dying, he and Will would have realized they loved each other romantically, and their parabatai bond would have fucked them over eventually). They all have an equal amount of love and respect for each other, and they balance each other so well. And I appreciate that none of them are relegated to being “the overly jealous partner who ruins everything for the other two.” We get time with each of them and love them all equally.
Tumblr media
9. Patroclus and Achilles from The Song of Achilles- Call me a basic bitch, but these two are unparalleled in terms of doomed romances. I love friends to lovers, and the story is so widely spanning that it gives their relationship such gravitas.
8. Yona and Hak from Akatsuki no Yona- Still haven’t finished the manga, but these two are god tier for fantasy romances. I love that they completely lose their minds over each other whenever they are not within arm’s reach, and they’re another great example of childhood friends to lovers. Hak’s “teasing” attitude in the beginning of the series wasn’t my favorite, but it’s funny to look back on it later, knowing that he’s so in love with Yona and would murder the first person to disrespect her.
Tumblr media
7. Shigure and Akito from Fruits Basket- Because why would I choose one of the normal, healthy relationships when I could go for one of the most fucked up romances in shoujo? These two…I don’t even know where to start. They’re the definition of toxic for most of the series, but by the end, you’re really rooting for them to be together with the Sohma family curse broken. Shigure is desperate for the curse to be broken so he can prove to Akito that he loves her without them being tied together by fate. Akito feels like she needs the curse because otherwise everyone will leave her forever. Akito sleeps with Kureno. Shigure sleeps with her mom. They’re “gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss” meets “mansplain, manipulate, man-whore.”
Tumblr media
6. Sasaki and Miyano from Sasaki to Miyano- What can I say? They’re just so freaking cute! I think they represent the romance a lot of people in fandom want, because they bond over manga and slowly come to learn more about each other. Sasaki never pressures Miyano to return his feelings, and I appreciate the patience he has in waiting for Miyano to give him an honest answer to his confession.
Tumblr media
5. Jesper and Wylan from Six of Crows- Another basic answer, but these two are so entertaining whenever they’re together. I love that Jesper starts out teasing Wylan relentlessly about looking like a pampered rich kid (despite the fact that Wylan also lives on the streets), but Wylan deadass saves the group time and time again, so Jesper comes to respect him more. This is how you do teasing in a relationship: they get under each other’s skin but aren’t complete dicks to each other. And I appreciate that the Shadow and Bone show changes their dynamic slightly while keeping the chaotic duo the same at their core.
Tumblr media
4. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase from the various Percy Jackson series- The pinnacle of middle grade/YA romance. Nobody else is doing it like these two. What works about their relationship is that we truly believe their friendship as 12 year olds before they start to have feelings for each other. So many times, authors shove two characters together because they feel like they need a romance, but Percy/Annabeth progress so naturally. They tease each other, but they know they’re both capable individuals at the end of the day (and their wildly different brands of intelligence work so well), and as long as they’re together, they can get through anything.
Tumblr media
3. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian from Heaven Official's Blessing- I’ve shipped these two for much less time than these other ships, but they have smashed their way to my top 3 ships of all time. How do you compete with a god who’s fallen from grace and his eternally devoted follower who would burn the world down to see them smile? How do you compete with Hua Cheng, who has stayed by Xie Lian’s side for hundreds of years out of pure devotion, but not in a creepy or weird stalkery way? I think the biggest thing this ship has going for it is its sincerity. Hua Cheng doesn’t stay with Xie Lian because he’s hoping Xie Lian will fall for him eventually. He doesn’t believe he’s even worthy of Xie Lian’s love. But he stays anyway, because that’s what unconditional love is like. You stay when the one you love is at their lowest and you can’t do anything to help. You stay when they’re fighting the heavenly emperor and kick ass alongside them. You hold an umbrella over their head when it's raining blood and carry them across the ground when it's littered with corpses.
Tumblr media
2. Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments/Shadowhunters- These two have destroyed me over the years. I think the best thing about this ship is how they bring out the best in each other and have changed each other’s lives for the better. Magnus is so outgoing and free spirited, but with Alec, he wants to “settle down” (lol) and raise a family. Alec started as the personification of the frowny face emoji, stuck in the closet with a stick up his ass, but now he’s basically running the shadowhunter world. They’re the perfect example of “opposites attract” who have changed their world simply by being in love.
Tumblr media
1. Damen and Laurent from Captive Prince- Speaking of couples who change their world simply by being in love…I don’t know if any other ship will top them for me. All the other enemies to lovers ships can get the fuck out. They’re nothing compared to Damen and Laurent. So many times, people will write “enemies to lovers” or “hate to love” relationships that are just two characters snipping at each other or bullying each other for no reason. Get that shit out of here. These two start with the purest, most honest loathing possible. They hurt each other in countless ways, but they come to learn each other slowly. They have every reason to be enemies, but they come through each layer of trauma with love for each other. They’re the kings (pun intended) of this trope.
Honorable mentions: Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper- They’re just so wholesome and sweet. The progression of their relationship from like to love is so realistic, and they’re basically the live action/book version of Sasaki and Miyano.
Ronan and Adam from The Raven Cycle- (haven’t read the last book in the Dreamer trilogy, but I hope nothing bad happens). Their differing brands of chaotic energy compliment each other perfectly, and as a reader, the slow realization that Ronan is in love with Adam was so eye opening and satisfying in a way few other series have been able to capture.
Just for fun, here are some of my “less canon” ships too.
* Inej and Kaz (they're practically canon, but they never explicitly say they're together or in love...but we all know they are)
*Kylo Ren and Rey (also practically canonical since they've at least kissed)
* America and England from Hetalia (if I really want to go back to my fandom shipping roots. I read nothing but fics for them for like 2 years in high school 😅)
*Izaya Orihara and Shizuo Heiwajima
*Hinata and Kageyama
*Carole and Tuesday
*Link and Sidon
you ever lie awake at night and think about how jem and will never truly got to be together when one of them wasn’t cursed, dying, or a silent brother, and they still loved each other so much? it makes the vision in gotsm where they get to be young together with no illness, the knowledge of no curse, and no emotion-muting powerful runes, so much more moving…when you realise they never got that chance in their real lives.
I just think sometimes of an ideal world, untouched by time, where they get to be parabatai without any of the tragedy, and will, jem and tessa are all happy together side by side.
when you dislike the MC of a good series AKA Who Will Die in The Wicked Powers
damn, being petty enough to flip off the MC x canon ship in my (favorite) fandom is really kicking me in the ass--
yeah, basically I can't touch half the TSC stuff on Tumblr bc I'm so anti-Clace...(meanwhile I love literally every other character that's been in every Shadowhunter series)...& they're probably gonna have a wedding + kids in the next books (assuming Jace isn't killed)...
The Wicked Powers is most definitely gonna have the Princes of Hell as the main villains. I feel like Luke, Gwyn, or Izzy will die, since the younger Shadowhunters are supposed to be central & well...look at the couples who will be alive/extant by TWP:
SPOILERS FOR ALL SHADOWHUNTER BOOKS!!
Jace & Clary
Magnus & Alec
Simon & Izzy
Julian & Emma
Kit & Ty
Kieran/Cristina/Mark
Dru & Ash (& maybe Jaime)
Diana & Gwyn
Luke & Jocelyn
Tessa & Jem
(forgive me if I'm missing anyone!)
Jace already died once. Clary had dreams about dying, but those were shown to be visions of Thule. Based on canon events, I think they're Clare's favorite ship. SAFE.
Magnus almost gave himself to Asmodeus in CoHF. Alec almost-ish died saving Magnus in The Eldest Curses. Also, Alec almost died thanks to that poison demon in TMI (the one Magnus saved him from). Malec might end up forced to rule some region of Hell (reason unknown but I think it'll have to do with them beating/destroying Asmodeus). I feel like past events foreshadow Magnus dealing with the unfortunate sides of being a warlock. But he won't die--the "killing your gays" trope might actually save he & Alec.
Simon nearly died when the vampires attacked him (when he was a mundane), then when Valentine bled him pre-Daylighter (then Jace's blood saved him). He "sacrificed" himself to Asmodeus CoHF, in the form of his vampire immortality + memories (which he basically got back later on). Izzy...she's been through a lot psychologically & about as much as I think most Shadowhunters would physically. She lost Max & her dad. But she's a badass (I'm not faulting her for it, either). So I don't think she's safe.
Julian & Emma both lost their parents in horrible ways. Their whole series was about the parabatai curse (which, to me, was conveniently not mentioned in chronologically earlier series...probably because it wasn't invented til TDA was written, lol). They're kinda written to be the leaders of Livvy's Watch. SAFE.
Kit has his whole faerie power reveal shit to explore & he + Ty are some of the major characters in TWP. I'm pretty sure they'll spend the series healing their relationship. SAFE.
Kieran/Cristina/Mark will survive because 1) Kieran as the Unseelie King is an important Shadowhunter ally, 2) they're poly rep in YA, which is rare, and 3) killing one of them off would leave the others to mourn in such a weird way. SAFE.
I love Dru Blackthorn. She's one of the main of TWP, so I think she'll survive, plus tbh I don't think any more Blackthorns will be killed. Ash will probably end up as the Seelie King or as Clace's adopted son, to "redeem" Sebastian in a narrative sense. Jaime's sort of a main for TWP as one of Dru's love interests. SAFE.
Diana & Gwyn aren't main characters (though I like their romance). Diana also is the ONLY transgender person in all the books (unless I missed something). I don't think she'll be killed off. Gwyn might be just because I see the Wild Hunt as an important group in TWP & he might die protecting Diana (narratively, this shows strengthened faerie-Shadowhunter relations, despite the Wild Hunt being unaffiliated with either Court).
Luke & Jocelyn deserve to be endgame, but I could see Luke being killed off as one of those "MC's loved one is killed so the MC goes & avenges them" type of things. I love Luke & Jocelyn as characters, though.
Tessa & Jem deserve to be endgame, arguably, more than any couple. They were the mains in their series, then Jem survived but was sort-of-"lost" when he became a Silent Brother. Then he miraculously became a (mortal) Shadowhunter again when he was burned by heavenly fire, he just left the Clave behind to hang with Tessa (good choice!). Tessa has a baby & she's gonna suffer enough when she outlives Jem. SAFE?
